As a former Police Officer I sadly went to quite a few people who had died from adult sudden death syndrome 😢 The youngests being 19 years old 💔 Also a friend of mine died in his sleep of the same at 38 💔💔💔
Steve, you and i are very similar. I lost my old man to a heart condition. He was 56 and died in my arms while i tried cpr on him. I was 14 years old at that time, 27th of March 1983.!!! Like you, I've grown up without him and missed out on all those things i could have done with him as an adult. Drinking a pint together is the one i probably miss the most. I'm now 56 myself, but i was adopted by him and my mum as a little baby, so i don't share those genetics , on the minus side of that, i don't know my genetics either so I'm a mystery.!!!
The figure of 12 young people a week was for the whole of the UK, not just England. Almost thirty years ago, a childhood friend of mine who was a semi professional footballer for our local team (I think they were in the Scottish First Division at the time) went to bed one night and never woke up, he was 22. There have been a few instances of young professional footballers just collapsing mid game because their heart has stopped. The medics being able to bring some back but sadly not all and it’s a heartbreakingly shocking sight, as often it’s a match that’s being shown live. One can only hope the the BHF make a breakthrough soon. I too lost a parent when I was young, my Mum passed away from Ovarian Cancer at the age of 47, I had just turned 18 when it happened. I was then the only girl in a family of men. It is the strangest of feelings when you become older than your parent.
When my grandson went to college around 10 years ago they arranged for voluntary testing to see if they were more likely to suffer from this condition as it was more common in this age group.
At our local pub we have run raffles, held quizzes and many other things to pay for a defibrillator, in an emergency you phone 999 and they send an ambulance and give you the code to access the defibrillator, staying with you and helping with instructions. You can find defibrillators around the town and cities.
My mum was 38 and I was 12 whenshedied. My now husband went through the same thing the same year. It was 10 months apart and then we lost our dad's 10 months apart. It's so weird. It's sad losing someone at a young age. ❤❤
I live in the UK my late father had several heart attacks, 5 years ago I kept on passing out, saw the cardiologist and they said that i was to young to have a heart attack even though the tests showed my heart was stopping in my sleep, 3 years ago I got a pacemaker fitted it saved my life
My friend you sould sue the doctor that told you your to young for a heart attack I'm 35 now my friend had one when he was 18 can happen at any age hope your well and getting on now
@@divbrown2752 I kept on telling them about my dad, & it even showed up on the 48 heart monitor in 2021 a cardiologist rang me & asked why I had not been treated. I had a loop recorder inserted into my chest, which showed that my heart was stopping in my sleep hence me getting a pacemaker fitted 3.5 years ago
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 2,000 young, seemingly healthy people under age 25 in the United States die each year of sudden cardiac arrest.
Organisations in the UK are also campaigning to have cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training to become mandatory in schools, plus more defibrillators to be available in public places to begin life saving treatment straightaway. I’m sad for your loss. I was 30 when my dad died of heart disease. Thirty years later and I still miss him.
There is a problem with defibs in that there isn't one national database showing where the nearest defibs is. Last year it took me visiting 3 different online databases before I could find where the nearest to me is and that one was in a business that said it could on be used on or outside their building
As a retired teacher, I have experienced the death of young people too many times. The worst was when it was my task to tell a large group of students that four former students who had worked with them had died in a car crash. I can still see the faces of my colleagues, who were probably all thankful that they were not at the front of the assembly. I managed not to cry, but it was one of the most intense emotional experiences of my life. We memorialised the dead students with four trees planted in a row. A few years on, a 13 year old had just reached home from her day at school. She had a friend with her. Apparently, as she reached into her bag for the front door key, she died. It was reported as sudden death syndrome. There is another tree on the school grounds commemorating her life, and under the tree, the family provided a bench. It used to make me emotional to see students sitting there. There were several other cases, and each time, students raised money to donate to an appropriate charity. Young people are so caring and generous. I am sorry to hear Steve that you have had such a tragic experience in your life. My Grandpa died when I was 18 months old, and it is my only real regret that I never knew him. I'm sure that, one day, Sophia will have the same feelings.
This is fairly common in ireland unfortunately and more so recently. The most famous one was Cormac McAnallen who was a gaelic footballer with the county tyrone team, but there has been many since not so much soccer mostly GAA and Rugby. Sorry to hear about your dad
Hi Guys , I think we can all relate in some way to either a loved one or friend with a heart condition , my son had heart surgery just 8 weeks old , step dad has heart failure . Rest in peace all that have passed away .
11:50 Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (which is often the back seat driver of the government) produced some white papers on population-wide genetic testing. That was part of their proposals to get the NHS into a better place - to intercept all sorts of genetic risk factors before illnesses start, let alone get bad enough to need intensive treatment. That enables screening to be targeted more accurately so we screen people most at risk whatever their age instead of screening everyone over a certain age. It was accepted by the last government and large scale genetic testing is being piloted by NHS England. In return for a £5 gift voucher, you can put your full genome on a database alongside your medical records, and it’ll be used for research to identify correlations between genes and illnesses on an unprecedented scale.
I definitely see the benefit in screening everyone regardless of age, because obviously there isn't a timer that just kicks in at a certain age for risk factor. You just never know...unless you do.
Im in birkenhead and have had heart and clotting problems, ive got a lot to thank the NHS for, i know one thing, if i lived in America I'd now be broke and homeless or dead because I'd never get insurance.
It's horrible when someone passes so young. I had a teenage nephew of one of my sisters who dropped dead while playing football a few years ago. It was tragic. Usually it is caused by an unknown heart condition which strikes with the sporting activity. 15 years of age, it's shocking. Remember, the US will have similar figures too! The tests would just to look for the particular faulty genes. The shots would be to cut the fault out or reset it correctly.
This is something I’ve been talking to others about for years. Nearly always fit, healthy sporty people. One thing I did notice is that many of the male deaths were young black men. We know there is an issue specifically for black males but it’s still not been pinned down. It’s as tho the heart just suddenly hits an electrical current/rhythm that stops the heart and that’s it. SCD. Sudden cardiac death. I know a US mum who’s 6 yr old son, who was the male of a pair of twins the other being a girl, just died of the same problem. She has NEVER got an answer as to why he died. And that’s horrifying. And in my career, I had a case I have never forgotten. A 9yr old girl, out roller skating in the evening before dinner, perfectly healthy, came home for dinner and died on the doorstep. She just dropped. That was one of the worst shifts I ever had to live thru. Helping the mum. Having to tell the granny who travelled a v long way to be told. I have never forgotten that sound, and I don’t think any of the patients that evening did either. You’ve never heard an emergency dept so silent except for the howl she let out. It was absolutely devastating. I’ve sat and watched time and again as young footballers drop on the field of play. Incidences of younger sudden death have increased over the past few years but that’s the covid effect - it creates micro clots, causes stroke and heart attack. It creates arrhythmias. It messes with oxygenation in the body. And people are dying way too soon. And across more sports - seen it in tennis players more recently. This research is vitally needed to see why these really young, fit people are dropping dead without any apparent reason other than their heart just stopped. If they can sort this gene out it’ll save so many lives. But I do believe there needs to be more regular cardiac monitoring of male football (soccer) players as this is a definite problem.
No parent should lose their childten, no matter how they pass, it is heartbreaking and takes a little piece of you away too. Hopefully cures will wipe away this terrifying condition, something you never ever dream will happen. My daughter passed in 2010 (not from a heart condition) but it caused me to have a heart attack 5 years later, the doctor told me that my heart was literally broken, I didn't think that could actually happen. My love goes out to every parent who has lost their child and may they find the strength and peace to continue❤
Blimey that was a hard watch. Sorry to hear of your fathers untimely death Steve. I remember as a 19 year old many decades ago going to watch my local football team play a match with mates. There was a long ball to York City striker David Longhurst who suddenly collapsed as he chased said ball. Despite immediate medical help he died aged 25 from an undiagnosed heart issue that caused a heart attack. It was shocking to see.
When I was teaching, we had a 14 year old student die unaccountably. I also had a female colleague in her mid twenties, to all intents and purposes fit and healthy, leave work and die in her sleep during the night. This was over 40 years ago, prior to the full sequencing of the the human genome and the revolution in genetics and the ability to tie certain conditions to individual gene malfunction and to attempt to develop therapies that will rectify the gene responsible and provide a cure. With the increasing sophistication in techniques and ever improving understanding of this area of genetics, I'm very hopeful that this will become reality in the not too distant future.
I have had palpitations for about 10 years now and its a strange feeling to have your heart speed up slow down stop for a second or so , they usually last for around four hours . I remember the day they started i had gone to a p/t job after work and did not have much to eat then going home they kicked in with a cold sweat which was the worse i have felt so far . I now take Apixaban and Bisoprolol though i still get palpitations . I am not young so one day i will shuffle off this mortal coil still a mystery to me why they kick in one day and never leave as that day was not that unusual with no real history of heart problems in the family other than my mum who died of cancer though worked too bloody hard all her life. there is a clock inside us just as the aging clock kicks in .
Sorry to hear of your Dad’s untimely death Steve. At least I had mine until he was in his fifties, but it still felt too young. Also sympathy to other commentators who also lost their Dad early.
Sorry to hear that Steve. While I was 28ish when I lost my dad to the same, it doesn't make it better in how it feels, but you're right that it's better than not having him there when I was growing up.
I am so sorry for your loss Steve. My partner lost both of his parents to cardiac arrest and my dad has had something called silent heart attacks due to previously undiagnosed blocked arteries, so this subject is close to our household. I think if you are related to someone who has a heart issue we owe it to our loved ones and ourselves to stay healthy and get checked regularly.
A friend I went to school with used to faint a lot. The first I remember was when we were in the lunch queue and that first time she was only out for a few seconds but over time she was out of it longer each time she fainted. After tests it was found that every time she'd fainted her heart had stopped. She had a pacemaker fitted in her 20's and she hasn't fainted since. We are now in our 40's. She was one of the lucky ones.
My father had a series of heart attacks before I was born. He died when I was 9. My brother inherited the condition and passed it on to my nephew, both of whom have also gone now
My husband died suddenly at work Seventeen years ago of a massive heart attack he was just in his early fifties it’s so hard to come to terms with when your husband goes to work and never comes home again xx
We definitely seem to be hearing of it more especially with young males. I’m so glad I decided to not allow my boys to have it especially as I have a genetic heart condition
I'm so sorry about your dad Steve, that's far too young. This was my area of work, although I didn't specifically work with children, I did have contact with them. I did a fair amount with the British Heart Foundation. I also used to counsel people before and after having a cardiac defibrillator fitted, then look after them when they were having the procedure done.💔
Losing a parent at any time is hard- but more so when you are young, and still need their support and advice (and love, of course). I'm sorry you lost your Dad so early. It's frightening when you learn that there are so many children and young people who live with undiagnosed heart issues, that can result in their sudden collapse and death completely out of the blue. Often they appear to be the fittest and healthiest of people until it's too late. One tends to read about cases locally from time to time- but the national figure was shocking! It just seems so against the natural order of things for parents to lose children - particularly before they have had a chance to live their best life.
Sorry for your loss. My mum died suddenly in front of me due to an aortic dissection. Sadly, losses like this are all too common and even more tragic for otherwise fit young people. A great effort to raise awareness, and looks like some great research progress being made.
This hits home. I was born with complete heart block. I was finally diagnosed in my late 20’s . The doctors said they were amazed I was still alive. I could have so easily died suddenly. I was rushed to hospital and have a pacemaker .

I looked up the statistics and out of a population of +-63.8 million, an average of 100,000 have heart attacks per annum and are admitted to hospitals. Around 190 people per day will pass away from heart attacks or heart failure per day in the UK. Around 13 of these are babies born with severe heart defects, and of the remaining 177 +- 15.3% will be younger than 30. Shockingly guys, the USA statistics per 100,000 people are almost double the numbers for the UK.
I lost my father when I was… I actually don’t remember, below sixteen. He died of lots of things, alcohol misuse among them, but heart disease was a big contributor. No one should lose people ‘before their time’ - even though we do. I’m very sorry for your loss.
Terry Yorath Welsh former football player was playing football with his 15yr old son when dropped dead we watched marc Vivien foe die on the football pith at 33. I'm sorry for the loss of your dad. I have Heart failure its scary. ❤
This happened to a lad I'd been at school with. He was also athletic. Running for a bus at 22, and just collapsed and died. Sorry to hear about your experience with your dad, Steve.
When babies are born certain tests are done, but not stringent heart tests unless a problem appears almost immediately - like a hole in the heart. Things are moving slowly due to the major advancements in genetics which will at least raise a red flag to potential heart defects. There is a television advert about a young (still at school) girl playing football who just collapses on the field in the middle of the game and is dead. Thank God my children, although all were born prematurely in the 60s, are still living and have no heart problems 🙏♥️.
My husband’s best friend died at the age of 17 whilst playing 5 aside football 😢 here in Ireland it’s an average of 2 deaths per week which is still. 2 to many . Thank you for highlighting this heartbreaking syndrome💔I hope the cure or even pre testing comes soon 🙏🏻
An incredibly important campaign. I lost my cousin when I was 16, Christmas Eve 2014 she was 17 and it was 2 weeks until her 18th. She died in her sleep from an undiagnosed heart condition no prior symptoms. We have all had to go through testing supported by Cardiac Risk in the Young which is a UK charity that provides support to those diagnosed and those who have lost someone close they also have a medical team that travels the country hosting free (through fundraising) heart screening events for as many young people as possible. For many they can't get a specific diagnoses from autopsy as some conditions don't show up after death only whilst the person is still alive can it be picked up. C.R.Y has campaigned for many years for national heart screenings for all people between the ages of 14-35 as for many you don't know until its too late. The government has refused to fund it as they think the numbers are too small to do so even though we know it can and has saved lives. There is a concern held by experts that the number on average could actually be higher but due to it not being a condition picked up after death if the person had any other conditions or maybe they were driving or something their death could be misdiagnosed. It is important to note that its not just those who do sport it is higher in those who are active because of the strain on the heart but my cousin wasn't into sport she was an artist, and a writer who would have gone on to do great things. I would strongly encourage anyone to look into it further, donate if you can and check if there is a screening in your area with available spaces. My family hosts the C.R.Y team in our part of the world usually bi-annually as we alternate with another family in the same position who also fundraise to get a weekend of screenings. And we do know that people have been diagnosed through our screenings and have received the right care and management for their condition- people who never had prior symptoms who went because they thought they should just in case. I'm really glad BHF are now taking on this campaign because it's not spoken about as much as it should be and more people should be aware of it.
My condolences Steve, my dad had a bypass too. His heart was ok, but Alzhiemers kicked in after the op, he was 58. Scotland has a high heart disease rate and I think we all know if young people who have gone this way. In our family it was a fit slim young lady 30, who was pregnant. They managed to get her on life support & deliver the baby but she never got to see or hold him.

Maybe do a video on how to use a defibrillator- they are stationed in a lot more places these days in the UK with many affected campaigning for this! I’m sure it wouldn’t be a very long video and hugely important if it even saved one life through somebody seeing and remembering what to do

I live in the UK my late father had several heart attacks,
5 years ago I kept on passing out, saw the cardiologist and they said that i was to young to have a heart attack even though the tests showed my heart was stopping in my sleep, 3 years ago I got a pacemaker fitted it saved my life
My friend you sould sue the doctor that told you your to young for a heart attack I'm 35 now my friend had one when he was 18 can happen at any age hope your well and getting on now
@@divbrown2752 I kept on telling them about my dad, & it even showed up on the 48 heart monitor in 2021 a cardiologist rang me & asked why I had not been treated. I had a loop recorder inserted into my chest, which showed that my heart was stopping in my sleep hence me getting a pacemaker fitted 3.5 years ago

Sorry for your loss. Forty years old is far too young.💖
I call it one of nature’s criminal offences.
@@Westcountrynordic yes, I hope that will become sorted eventually. But we have a promising start.
Hearing of your dad's passing I would like to offer my sincere condolences, please.keep up the videos and go on to make your family proud.
Absolute trauma what you went through. No wonder it affected you for so long.
💯🥰🇬🇧
If you ever hear Mike & the Mechanics “THE LIVING YEARS” regarding missing your father, I challenge you not to cry…
❤❤ definitely 🙏
Every time ❤
11:50 Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (which is often the back seat driver of the government) produced some white papers on population-wide genetic testing.
Can't talk about the elephant.
England fans sing "England 'till I die
My uncle died from a sudden heart attack at 39. I lost my Dad a year later from something different. I was 17.
So sorry

Really sorry to hear about you losing your dad so young. You are such a nice fella with a lovely family, sure he'd be so proud of you all 💞
Thank you, that means a lot. ❤️
Im in birkenhead and have had heart and clotting problems, ive got a lot to thank the NHS for, i know one thing, if i lived in America I'd now be broke and homeless or dead because I'd never get insurance.
Approximately 2 ,000 under 25s each year in the U.S
Sorry for your trauma, Steve. Wow. From Yorkshire
❤️
If you have vested interest in this subject I’d definitely recommend looking into the story of football player Christian Eriksen.
I think if you are related to someone who has a heart issue we owe it to our loved ones and ourselves to stay healthy and get checked regularly.
people just dropping on the pitch happens alot in the game of football most recent i can remember is a guy called christian eriksen
My brother inherited the condition and passed it on to my nephew, both of whom have also gone now
A school friend of mine collapsed and died on a football field when we were about 15 or 16
Same here my dad died 1974 at the age 53 of heart attack too so I know how that feels steve.
awesome video and thank you to the sub who sugested it that was an awesome idea 😀😁👍🏻
My husband died suddenly at work Seventeen years ago of a massive heart attack he was just in his early fifties it’s so hard to come to terms with when your husband goes to work and never comes home again xx
Very sorry to hear that, Margaret! That would be very difficult to cope with--you must be a strong lady. Hugs from across the pond ❤️
Reacting to my roots thank you for your kind thoughts ❤️
So sorry that you had to go through that Steve.
It’s more common since the COVID vaccine
Totally agree with that x
We definitely seem to be hearing of it more especially with young males. I’m so glad I decided to not allow my boys to have it especially as I have a genetic heart condition
This is really so sad 😢
Love from UK ❤🇬🇧
So sorry steve ❤❤
I'm so sorry about your dad Steve, that's far too young.
This was my area of work, although I didn't specifically work with children, I did have contact with them. I did a fair amount with the British Heart Foundation. I also used to counsel people before and after having a cardiac defibrillator fitted, then look after them when they were having the procedure done.💔
Bless you, Tanya ❤️
Losing a parent at any time is hard- but more so when you are young, and still need their support and advice (and love, of course). I'm sorry you lost your Dad so early.
It's frightening when you learn that there are so many children and young people who live with undiagnosed heart issues, that can result in their sudden collapse and death completely out of the blue. Often they appear to be the fittest and healthiest of people until it's too late. One tends to read about cases locally from time to time- but the national figure was shocking!
It just seems so against the natural order of things for parents to lose children - particularly before they have had a chance to live their best life.
Thank you, Caroline. ❤️
Hi guys, I saw your peanut butter podcast on Google news this morning wow.
Do what now? 😂 Never heard of that.
At some point everyone will be give a DNA test at birth, to rule out and treat conditions
Yeah, I'm sure that's true!
Shout out to all the medical researchers both here in the UK and Worldwide. It's definitely something the UK excels at.
Hi Steve can you do a video of you and your wife do a react to ITV NEWS MERIDIAN OF FRED DINENAGE,S FINAL PROGRAMME 16TH DECEMBER 2021 HE HAS DONE OVER 60 YEARS ON TV
My family have heart problems for generations. Sign of heart problems is round finger nails on thumbs for our family. A lot of times they do not know they have a problem. May they all R.I.P.and never be forgotten 🙏🙏🙏🙏🇬🇧🇺🇲🇬🇧🇺🇲
Hi Steve can you do a video of you and your wife do a react to ITV NEWS MERIDIAN OF FRED DINENAGE,S MBE FINAL PROGRAMME 16TH DECEMBER 2021 HE HAS DONE OVER 60 YEARS ON TV
Terry Yorath
Welsh former football player was playing football with his 15yr old son when dropped dead we watched marc Vivien foe die on the football pith at 33. I'm sorry for the loss of your dad. I have Heart failure its scary. ❤
This happened to a lad I'd been at school with. He was also athletic. Running for a bus at 22, and just collapsed and died. Sorry to hear about your experience with your dad, Steve.
According to the CDC around 2000 under 25s die of a heart attack in the USA a similar proportion as we have in the UK
Watching Max Velocity - Severe Weather Center, there are severe flood warnings for NC with the storm surge, hope your family is safe.
A Bolton Wanderers player collapsed on the pitch during a game , luckily he survived, but hasn't played since x
I don't know if he'll be mentioned in the video but one of the young footballers was Jaimie from Scotland He was aged 13, yes, thirteen years old.
Steve, that must have been so traumatic for you, to find your Dad like that. My heart goes out to you my friend. This topic is something that has also touched me personally. I lost my partner of just over 20 years, 5 years ago. She died of Heart failure, there was no history of Heart problems in her family, it just happened. She was 53 years old, still only young by todays standards and it's as hard for me today as it was then 🙏
I lost 2 of my older siblings from heart disease, my eldest sister just droped dead, nobody knew she had it my brother had 3 operations, stints put in,nothing helped,he died the day after his 79th birthday my sister was 68,but my youngest Son 25 years in the Army really fit he had a mild heart attack at 45 so when I had chest pains I was in hospital for tests,I have angina so I have to carry a spray around with me,mum had an enlarged heart but she died of old age just before her 90th birthday, but it seems to be in the family beans.
It’s so sad to think of all these young people losing their life like this. I remember years ago when I worked at Morrisons and a young boy in his 20s collapsed in the car park. Our first aider tried so hard to help him but he didn’t make it 💔
I am so sorry to hear about your Dad Steve, the same thing happened to to me I was 15 my Dad was 41 I heard him having a heart attack in the next room & went him to find him collapsed, we didn’t have a house phone then as it was the early 80s so I had to rush out to my Aunts by the time the ambulance arrived as it had snowed that night he had already passed 😢. ❤️🇬🇧
It's all connected to the medical intervention of the last four years.
The statistics for the US is 2,000 deaths per year in young people under 25. Steve I am sorry to hear about your Dad, I do think you and Sophia should be tested to see if you are predisposed to cardiac problems. Better to be safe than sorry.
There was a young lad in liverpool named Oliver King died after just collapsing, his family petitioned and got defibs put in all schools to aid with resuscitation.
Maybe do a video on how to use a defibrillator- they are stationed in a lot more places these days in the UK with many affected campaigning for this!
I’m sure it wouldn’t be a very long video and hugely important if it even saved one life through somebody seeing and remembering what to do
Hi Steve. So sorry to hear about your dad; it must have been really traumatic to find him like that. Death is something humans have never dealt with as it's so alien to us as a concept. You would think we would take it in our stride like the animal kingdom does - makes you wonder why that is?
