SEE THE NEW BEFORE & AFTER SIDE BY SIDE COMPARISON OF PORTAL: TERMINAL VELOCITY, HERE: • Before & After Compari...
DESCRIPTION:
My interpretation of what a real Portal gun would be like if one existed. Based on the video game, Portal. I tried to match the game as close as possible. This was not done by any large company or a VFX team, but merely just by myself as a hobby. This was the most challenging project I have ever undertaken, consisting of 3D tracking, seamless camera cuts and 3D camera projection. ENJOY! The Visual Effects.
Breakdowns will follow so watch for that.
For those of you that think the gun is a physical prop you can buy, well.....sorry to break the news to you, but it's entirely CG. The 3D Portal gun was replacing/covering up a painted up coffee can with tracking markers. Here's a 3D turntable of the model, • 3D Portal Gun
For anyone that wants to know the song used: Snakes On The Take - Freeplaymusic.com
Software Used:
Autodesk Maya - Modeling/ lighting
Zbrush - Texturing
PFTrack - 3D tracking
After Effects - to composite
HDR shop - to capture High Dynamic Range images for 3D lighting/ Refections
Trapcode Particular - for particles
Looks like a living hell for VFX Editor...
Guy: You alright?
Friend: No. I just got launched at a high velocity at a fence. I don’t think I’m okay.
I remember watching this a long time ago...and it still looks amazing to this day. Great Job.
Thanks. Yea, I just rewatched it myself the other day, and I'm still proud of it. Looking back at it now, I'm wondering how the hell I managed to do it.
Truly awesome.
Same
Thycket i remember watching this almost 4 years ago :3
Video is still awesome
same
Love how you guys made it look as realistic as possible! :)
jason looks like a lot of work went into this video. Very cool and entertaining to watch!!
The fact that you guys did your own version of the portal gun is just pretty amazing, both of you did such a clean short. 💖
0:24 we looked at the operational end of the device
So, his whole house is made of moon rocks? Okay!
portals don't only work on moon roxk, it just works better on it
@@drviper102 a portal either open or doesn't , how could one be better or worse ?
Humam Slayer I can't remember the reasoning behind it but im pretty sure they mention in the game that moon rock is a better material for the surface for the portals. Idk it's a 2 year old reply to a 4 year old comment
@@drviper102 They also work on concrete.
NEBULA KINKKU boy, I love my moon roxk!
my gun? my skills? - everything was created from scratch in 3D
It's 2019 and this video is still amazing!
Well if you're talking about when I shoot out like a canon towards the end, that's my CG stunt double. But the stuff inside and I'm falling between the portals, I was just sitting back on a stool while moving around.
through months of planing, clever shooting, visual effects and tallent
Could you make a Green Screen footage for the portal effects??
tutorials. I learned some of it in school, but really, alot of self teaching and problem solving
the more that I've been thinking about it, the capital "O" is kind of dumb so I have decided to change it.
That was the very next thing on my list to do, a side by side comparison. Then after that I was going to do some actual breakdowns of shots. So look for that next peeps.
Now that's what I call special fx!
Bueno, ya estamos preparados ante este tipo de situaciones cuando tengamos la portal gun xD
eu quero deixar minha marca aqui, eu sempre via esse vídeo na minha infância
that was fucking awesome!
its actually 1:44, when were looking up at him, this was the mistake. the footage was accidentally flipped in post and what were seeing is the reversed image of teh footage from behind since its in 3D space. (if that makes sense) I wouldve updated this version on youtube, but you cant simply over write it.
fucking best fx i have ever seen
true
yea, I couldve spent the time to fix that in post, but really, i thought that there was so much going on, that who cares, you probably wont see it.
What did you use to throw him
Autodesk Maya. 3D modeled stunt double I animated.
+Jason Craft the best one I have seen
+Nicholas Crawford lol it is fake it is from a game no portal gun can not shot portal,s
It is an animation, you dong
Yes, but, there is a portal gun out there that is just for show but, you can't get it anymore.
nope, at :52 it's at the angle it should be, you'd be looking at the higher point from that angle. The top of the portal is closest to you and the bottom is farthest away from you. A lower point wound put the portal upside down/ flipped the other way. I based it on the angle in which the gun shot it.
Fake
No suit sherlock
If you thought this was real you are an idiot
couldn't figure that out on my own
RichJordy okay we don't care
some parts you can do, like the editing, and maybe some chroma keying if you have any of that. But I'm not sure about 3D tracking and adding effects, I haven't used Final Cut for some time. You'd need a 3D tracking program for sure if you're gonna have the camera moving, PF Track or Boujou work good. And a visual effects program to add effects, I used After Effects for this, which I recommend. You can pretty much do everything with it.
Saw this for the first time today...really cool the way it is all seamless and I laughed out loud of the guy continually falling. I've seen a few other "portal" youtube videos, but had never seen this one. Well done!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it
I remember watching this as a kid and I loved it. I even thought it was real. Great job at tricking my young pea-brain!
You're welcome! I even look back at it now and I'm still amazed at how well it still holds up.
Just rewatched it again after a few years. Even today the effects are absolutely AMAZING! and 10 years ago? I don't even want to start.
They were SO good that 11 year old me believed it was real for a week! 😂
about 2 years of my time, 2-4 hours each night. Mainly due to the 3D tracking part of it. If I had gone the more practical route with, static cameras, a physical prop and camera cuts this could've been done easily under a 6 months time.
This is, BY FAR, the best portal VFX video I have seen. I love how you don't shy away from showing tons of views through the portals. Most vids I have seen try to show the actual portals as little as possible. And the fact that this was done 12 YEARS AGO??? that is crazy. Excellent work on this awesome video.
P.O.V (portal's occasional video). Just trying out a spacetime-breaking, wormhole making device with some friends. Nothing special...simply the best youtube video about Valve's video game series 'Portal' I have ever seen up to this point. Now if you excuse me, I'll return to fantasizing about other games that brush with theoretical deliciousness.
I cannot stand people who find any way possible to criticise someone's amazing video. This is flawless, best 'real life portal gun' video out there. People saying 'not realistic' or 'fake' are just complete low-life twats. Amazing video guys.
After Effects - Compositing, Maya - Animation and lighting, Zbrush - Texturing, PF Track - 3D Tracking, Photoshop - Stills and texturing, HDR shop - for HDR photos for lighting the gun
great video and vfx, even by today's standards :D
You're looking through the camera, not the eyes of the camera man.
What a classic.
How did you make it look so real
Dang this video still holds up pretty well
if only 4k cameras existed then. I look back at this now and I'm still taken back that I was able to put this together.
@@JCraftvfx That would be incredible
Ah, my bad. I thought the view through the portal at the top of the stairs was the wrong one. I stand by my second statement though, the video is awesome.
I made the portal gun myself, no money spent.
Please make a New video like this :)
I made a similar video if u want to check it out , 2 actually...
sure, always curious to see other peoples work
Wow! That was really great. Stunning visual effects. Way to go, fellas, amazing work - and really fun to watch, too!
That was SUPER Awesome!!! Love it alot! It felt like real life, right? I want a Portal gun so bad. And, I know its kinda dangerous too, but kinda fun.
Want what? The gun is not real.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
8 years old but still sells it
I remember seeing this video when it first came out, I loved it!
Scrubbing through this video frame by frame and it looks seamless as hell to this very day. Super impressive work for a video that's 10 years old!
Acting was a bit weak, but all in all it's a great video. Job well done!
Dude, You should be the editor for a Portal movie that maybe someday will created.
Someday...
Can you guys see? They don't have the problem I am having with pink chessboards and huge red error messages all around!!!! I had to say that just for fun, only the ones who actually play Portal will get it! VERY FUNNY VIDEO, VERY PROFESSIONAL! Makes people think it is real, even if it was, don't y'all think they'll be using the portal gun to do much more IMPORTANT things? Well, I wouldn't... Sorry I had to do it again.
Well done. I know all the hard work it was to get the camera angles in and on timing. Must've been a lot of planning to get the right camera angles from the right perspectives then placing the videos within the portals. If a Portal movie is ever made, yu should be in charge of the special effects. I had an idea for a video that would involve use of both the portal gun and the gravity gun. Perhaps you're the guy to pull it off.
Your portal on the side of the truck will disappear, because portals (and the surface) can't move.
Recall that in portal 2 co-op, when a given button is pressed, a non-portalable surface flips 180˚ to the other side -- the portable surface. When the button is not pressed, your portal on that surface will disappear.
Therefore, from this simple concept, one would deduce that the portal on the truck will disappear when the truck moves.

@Kenny Fisher He just looked at the OPERATIONAL END OF THE DEVICE because he doesn't seem to like GLaDoS since we all knows she was a liar and a manipulator
Aha, clocked the mistake at about 1:00. Awesome video.
Portal Gun 5. The biggest thing to happen to Portal Gun since Portal Gun.
- Thinner and lighter device
- Even thinner and more coherent Portal event horizon
- Overall black hole thickness reduced by 35%
- GPS tagging allows Portal Bookmarks
- New app: iThinkWithPortals
Did you do motion tracking for portal gun in PFTrack?

I'm not proud of my country specially this year of the cup, my country is even worst the chaos every daym I'm just specifying it for you to know how far this great game embraces fans.and this was probably the most beautiful thing i've ever wrote and through away because that's internet, no gives a shit!!!!!!!
So I guess I still need to explain this to you. Were not looking through the eyes of the person, were looking through the camera. This is why you can see my face looking down. The camera is pointed UP! Now does it make sense?
Who's acting? That's how they are in real life. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get them to do any better. But really though, the more I watch it, the less it bothers me and don't really see it.
I remember actually being fooled by this when I was young. Good times.
Remove the wall that the portal was on? Then the other portal would be closed. Oh man, I'm being a real party pooper, you guys keep on doing impossible things with portals
NOOOOO! I knew something wrong would turn up eventually, crap. The footage got flipped in post. Good catch. Well to late now I guess, already went viral. I'll have to fix and repost.
I just work at a medical animation company as a lead compositor. I do not work at a movie production place, but it would be cool if I did, I'm sure I'd fit right in.
I like it xD
If it was real, i'll like to buy one :-)
But now i only want a copy (FAKE)

nope, intentional. Try going outside and looking into a window on a sunny day, it is so bright outside that when you try to look inside, it appears dark.
the best portal video ive seen. i can tell this took LOTS of planning in order to make it as flawless as it was. must've had several cameras set up. lol
because I'm shooting the orange ones. the portal gun doesnt need to shoot blue, orange, blue orange. you can shoot in any order you want.
Great vid you guys. It's too bad most of these comments are from people who don't know what they're talking about with portals on moving surfaces. If you've played Portal 2 you'd know that when you shut off the neurotoxin you place a portal below a laser the the other on a moving plate. Moving. Most of the time a portal will disappear from a surface when it moves for gameplay. (staying in the map and the likes)
I have not played Portal yet. We could debate all day about whether or not portals work on moving surfaces, but the fact is that all surfaces move along with the earths rotation and orbit around the sun. It's funny how people's imaginations can comprehend the idea of portals, but if you suggest something outside of what a video game tells you to believe it becomes impossible to imagine.
The correct answer to my question appears to be: PORTALS DON'T EXIST, SO YOU CAN'T PUT THEM ON ANYTHING!
The only effect I didn't think really sold the "reality" of it here was the shot of the infinite fall from outside the loop... I can't tell you why, but the guy falling just looked fake to me - all the other effects from the "prop" gun, the portals and the seamless cuts all looked golden to me. I think the ONLY reason people are complaining about the acting, is because when they see effects this good, they equate it with Hollywood and Network television.. Damn fine job.
1. motorcyclist dont fall from high, its low and they generally slide across the floor. hight makes a big diffrence on imapct..
2. falling ten feet and standing straight up, is not happening, no it wont kill u but itll hurt like a bitch, at least bend your knees
3. lol no shit its fake, but i was hoping this would be a parody that uses real physics. a true "if portal was real" kinda thing.
is it too much too ask for realistic physics?
Actually this video is physically possible, when he shoots out of the ground in the backyard, he looses quite a bit of velocity and is unable to generate the same amount of velocity from the fall back into the ground in the backyard, he loses even more when he shoots out of the side of the house because the lateral force now has to combat gravity, much like a bullet looses speed after a certain distance traveled and can go from lethal to non lethal. :) Of course none of this video is possible.
In the game, the momentum *does* transfer. He'd have been up to 120mph or so. Per game, this would transfer to 120mph x-axis velocity and zero y-axis, which would begin freefall as you mentioned. But the x velocity is more than enough to break his limbs when he lands, even with a tuck and roll. I'm not saying that's how physics *does* work in real life, I wouldn't know, but it's how it worked in the game. Gonna need an ambulance...
as did the video? the effect is very rea l:S , Live now total confusion about whether it is true or not xD ( i'm from Venezuela )
I'm hoping by watching what I made, that they see the potential that portal movie could make. I would also like to see this happen.
Is my
Incredibly hostile aren't we, internet tough guy? From the video description: "Based on the video game, Portal." It's funny how someone can attempt to ridicule another's intelligence without even knowing anything about that other person at all. Belittling others and using capital letters do not make you sound smarter. It just makes you childish.
1. Make a portal in your home.
2. Break and entry the place you want to steal from.
3. Make another portal at that place.
4. Throw everything you want to steal through the portal and it will land at your place.
5. When finnished, walk through the portal and you will find yourself at home with all the loot.
6. Close the portals.
Done!
Um, he's right, at least with the portals aligned that way. The "copy" of him is looking down, while he is looking up. Since the "copy" is just him, there is no way that the "copy" is looking at his feet while he is looking up. (Although you can see your face through portals, if you align them a different way.)
So your budget for this short demo was somewhere around $1mil, right? I think Kevin Smith would be interested in your very impressive talent, per his last live Q&A "Burn In Hell". He notes that he did not do some crazy special effects in the movie "Small Town Gay Bar" because the 60 seconds of CGI would have cost more than the whole movie.
nice job on the gun and the effects one thing you shoulda tried at the end the place two portals on the ground so he goes up then down and back up and so on before the launch out the side but way cool, or placed it at the botom of a pool could be neet too, shit theres so much to do with it i dono were to start LOL thanks.
You would totally break your legs on landing. Once someone is stuck in a falling portal loop like that and reaches terminal veloc, the only way to save them is to land them on something soft or in water (with sufficient warning to take a diving posture). Good thing is they'd pass out quickly from the stress so you could leave them in the loop while you drive to the beach...
Speaking of which, how come in the 1950's area of Aperture, before they got moon rocks, the portal surfaces work PERFECTLY with the A.S.H.D.P.D. (portal gun)? It's probably because the A.S.H.D.P.D. is advanced enough to work with even poorly built portal surfaces.
Portals cannot remain in place on moving objects. It happens in the game all the time with the sliding portal squares.
Oh, ok if you say....I question it why ever saw in games (browser games) open first blue and after yellow. If it isn't fake can you be a billionaire! Have a good time, thanks for answering. And sorry my bad english I'm learning...
The portal on the truck would vanish as soon as you would move the truck. Read the Aperture Science HandHeld Portal Device Operation Manual to get yourself instructed on why the Portals do not work on the movable/mobile surfaces.
well then it simply would not work, since they are imaginary. its like trying to count to infinity, you just cant. unless there are rules in place with the portals you can come up with many impossible situations, the rules prevent many of these.
This is REALLY well done, your skill has potential :) This is utterly epic. And I'm going to have to go against @joksta5 for as the acting was actually good, hey of course it wasn't perfect acting isn't something that comes easy :). Keep up the good work
Unreal! I know there has to be some simple camera slide of hand, but you do it so well that it's seamless to my eyes. Everyone has to see this. Who knows? Maybe you'll actually fool some people into thinking it's real for a while :D
falling 10 feet should at leat hurt your legs, not just stand straight up. and falling at terminal velocity and then hitting that dirt from that high shouldve killed the guy. hes maybe falling at 40 mph at 15-20 feet high. THIS IS NOT REAL.
All those who scream "fake", dudes, that's so obvious it is but have some respect for the talent of a guy who knows how work with the right tools to create effects that are amazing. Sweet video, thank you for the effort you've put into this.
Если это смотрят русские то я напишу: в этом видео люди ведут себя как будто бы они больные!
What would happen if you trew the portal gun tough the portal but because of the distance it takes like a sec to get to the otherside. But before the gun reaches it the portal gets destroyed on both sides. Where does it go?
THAT was very well done! I plan on doing a review of the portal gun as part of a series in the near future. What did you use for editing software and are there any tutorials I could look at for making those portals you used?
You are brilliant! I am wanting to do something like this for a school project but I'm not sure I can pull it off without looking like crap :P Could this be done in final cut pro x? What do you use/recommend?
Um, sir, I think you either forgot to write "jk" or you are trolling. If you are interested, sir, there is a trolling tournament on September 31 in Juneau, Hawaii. I think, sir, that it would be of great interest to you.
