My favourite part was Max only giving the barest of answers in the official press conference that followed, and then holding his own personal press conference afterwards. especially when the FIA tried to stop him, and he simply replied "fine, we'll do it on the move then" and had a mobile press conference.

The last time I watched Drive to Survive (don't worry, I only watched the 1st two seasons), swearing was all part of the show. Gunther Steiner was made a star, in no small part, because of his constant swearing.
Noticing this, in the 2nd season, Christian Horner then started to unnecessarily swear. Toto Wolff, from the beginning, also sweared more often than a French sailor. Yet, Drive to Survive is seen as a *HUGE* success.
So, which one is it? Are the F1 stars supposed to swear for Drive to Survive, or not supposed to swear for the FIA? You can't have it both ways.

    1) Everyone says 'swearing' like it is universally understood what is and isn't swearing. In the global world of F1 what words, phrases, remarks would be considered off limits?
    2) This is 2024 where many of us purchase directly the F1 TV app so that we can get access to all the amazing content beyond just the basic mainstream media broadcast. Either put a simple TV-MA warning on your subscription streaming, or tell the licensees that are rebroadcasting in each country/region to do the work to police their content to their customers.

It has nothing to do with it language perception, it's just cultural and depending on your own ideology. The American conservatives have a huge problem with it and they try to make it seem like it's an objective thing that everybody espouses. Dutch people don't mind at all. I'm Greek and the word fuck has exactly the same connotations with our equivalent γαμώ. It can be used in all ways from offence to praise to surprise and nobody but the most conservative people mind it, with the exception of the performative civility of TV. It's mostly a puritanical effort by some people to impose some "values" that are almost purely a facade. In short absolutely nobody hear would feel offended if you said "my car is fucked", in whatever language.

The funny thing about this whole swearing matter is that there's technology to bleep out swearing, especially if it's something that is televised. Or if that's somehow out of reach for F1, maybe don't air the parts where swearing is involved which F1 and FOM have control over? The irony is that DTS airs these radio messages uncensored. Literally the reason anyone would know for sure Leclerc used the f-word in Monaco 2022 was because of the trailer for DTS Season 5 that showed that moment without the bleeping. You didn't even need to look it up anymore, DTS literally throws swear words in your direction in all its glory.
And even with all that...swearing? Really? Let's be real here one way or another children are going to hear swear words whether in songs, movies, etc. And if you're watching F1, a place that can brew swearing with the high-intensity environment, it's a hazard you take just as how you are exposing children to potentially catastrophic crashes like Silverstone 2022 or Bahrain 2020. If you don't want your children to hear swearing, then don't let them watch these things, especially the press conference where literally nothing of interest to children is happening.

Part of the FIA’s role is to champion road safety around the world and part of doing this is to discourage road rage. If MBS’s own F1 world champion is f’ing and blinding at every opportunity, it’s not exactly a great look nor a great example to ordinary motorists and future motorists. They’ll think, ‘well Max Verstappen loses his shit and drives people off the road so I can too”. I agree swearing should be reduced and this has been communicated badly by MBS, however, Max knew exactly what he was doing. @@kennyg1358 No, think of the dollars.
F1 and FIA have invested ample sums of money in this sport, and they have a standard they'd like to have everyone live up to, or at least attempt to. It's not hard, and it's not uncommon in any other sport series. Plenty of athletes from around the world are penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. This is no different.
Between engineers and mechanics...in the garage...no problem...whatever. But as it is increasingly a problem and every team comm is unusable, or it has to have a disclaimer, or others are put into the position to apologize for others worlds...it s all unnecessary.

You heard nothing - on almost all if not all broadcasts it was bleeped out - no children were harmed in the making of the press conference!
As for team radio - effectively we are eavesdropping into a private conversation, drivers probably don’t want you to know what they are saying half the time. They are athletes under extreme stress. Get an ear in on a rugby scrum and F1 drivers sound like saints!

@@JimmyJinIA Standards to live up to? You mean sponsors like alcohol and gambling brands? Or are you talking about the racing in countries like Saudia Arabia, where there is zero respect for the most basic human rights?? Those standards? LOL

Asking drivers not to swear in press conferences are fine. But the way they tried to do this was just ridiculous.

That's trying to enforce the repressive way of handling things in a sport that mostly happens in a very different cultural context.
Also, they race in countries where human rights go to die, without batting an eye, they really got bigger digging problems to deal with.

Max should start swearing in Dutch

The problem is sponsors' shareholders sensibilities being offended. Bin Sulayem is defending revenue streams. Any linguistic crusading is entirely incidental.

The futility of any attempt to police the tone of ANY Dutch person would be apparent to anyone who's visited the country.
