    I've owned a P950 for about 6 months now, and love it - what you say about shutter speed is totally correct though - it is a bit on the slow side for capturing wildlife

    Hi Luke, great video and a well balanced review if you dont mind me saying! I was almost ready to take out the cash and buy the P1000 until I saw the P950. Please correct me if I am wrong, but forgetting the extra 1000mm (if you can) for a moment the difference between P950 and P1000 is now virtually zero I think? My thing is travel and living in Italy close the alps hiking and taking in everything that it involves. With 2000mm or 3000mm in your had to can capture jaust about anything anywhere! So here's the question? Many reports on the P1000 say that at beyond 2000mm it is very difficult to use unless you have a tripod and or the bright spot viewfinder? Add to this the slightly smaller size and almost 0.5kg less in weight, it may be a much more friendly device for general use? As an inverstment both are excellent cameras as you said but I have not seen both toghther so I would value your advise?? Thanks John

    Hi Luke, I think you'll find that some of the differences between the P1000 and the P950 are quite subtle. For instance the EVF is slightly higher in resolution. And the native ISO is slightly higher. There are other subtle differences too but offhand I can't remember what they are.

    Biggest reason for the p950 to p1000 is that the P1000 is just to big, that thing is a monster!!

    Nice video. I think the P950 may be aimed, to some degree, at people who think that the P1000 is just too large. I haven’t owned either yet but I am considering the P950 because I think the range between 2000 and 3000mm is probably not going to be that useful compared to say 1000-2000mm and I do prefer the reasonable size. Any thoughts on that?

    • @hedegaard8
      @hedegaard8 4 года назад +2

      I have the P1000 and the P950 "only" has 2000mm lens, THAT is the reason why you get the P900,P950 or P1000 - is because of the zoom. NOTHING else in the camera is redeemable. So to make a 2020 edition (2 years later compared to P1000) with only 2000mm is atrocious and a HUGE fail. Ugh! Glad I have my P1000.

    • @wintrymix
      @wintrymix 4 года назад +3

      I agree that 2000mm is really a huge zoom and while 3000 is surely nice, in my opinion it does not justify the massive size of the P1000 at all. I tested both the P900 and P1000 in store a while ago, and the P1000 looks and feels like a 1980s video camera. It's just so big that you need to brace it on your shoulder or something. Not worth the extra zoom range. I'd never want to take it with me, and that's the main consideration: will you actually use it?

    • @seafood459
      @seafood459 2 года назад

      Exactly my thoughts, obviously I would love to get the p1000 but carrying it on holidays would be such a pain and it would just be left at home. The best camera is the one you have with you. So maybe I would sacrifice the last 1000mm (which don't add as much to the wow factor really) and get something more portable.

  • @BrightResultsMedia

    I wanted the p1000 but after seeing the size I'm opting for the p950 instead. The technology in my p900 is old and the p1000 is too large.

  • @cburgdorfer
    @cburgdorfer 4 года назад +7

    In my view an important factor is also size and weight of the camera. The P1000 is way too big and heavy for not substantially more benefit.

    The nikon coolpix p950 is an amazing camera for anyone interested in easy point and shoot...while you can still adjust your exposure while looking through the viewfinder....in my opinion I found the camera that fits all my needs, I mean everyone can compare apples with oranges...which is basically not what I think is statistically correct....

  • @BMunster

    I bought the P950....used to own the P900. The P950 is def a nice upgrade, seeing it has RAW file capability, a much better viewfinder, and as previously noted here, the P1000 is simply way too big, and quite honestly overpriced. The P950 is a lot of bang for the buck, and a nice happy medium. My two pennies...

    • @robguyatt9602

      So you reckon the viewfinder is definitely better? It would want to be. I hate my P900 viewfinder. I also hate the manual controls. I rarely use the camera. I mostly stick to my D610. But am still considering the P1000 because of its improved manual focusing as well as the viewfinder. But like you, I do think it is overpriced.

    • @BMunster
      @BMunster 4 года назад +3

      Yeah that P1000 is just huge. And the 2000-3000mm Range is kind of useless. The viewfinder in the P950 is a huge improvement. I'd say save the $200 and get the P950. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

      @@1catchem also, the majority of the weight is underneath the lens on the p1000 so you would naturally be holding your hand near the focus ring.
      I'm still not sure if the extra 1000mm is worth the hassle of lugging such a big camera with you.
      It is said that the best camera is the one you have with you (and I'm not sure I would want to randomly have the p1000 with me on walks or on a vacation)
      Still waiting to get my hands on both so I can decide which one to keep...

      Get the P950 because of the much better view finder. I have used my P900 on airshows and the poor view finder makes it a challenge. I will be upgrading to the P950 primarily because of the higher resolution of the view finder.

    • @pauladuarte781

      Not only do you have to carry all the different lenses around, requiring a camera back-pack (and you still seem to forget the one you need), but changing lenses takes up precious time and all those lenses wind up costing a fortune.

    I currently have a Nikon Coolpix B700 and all though it still works great, it's nearly 4 years old by this point so I've been looking around for a worthy successor.
    I have been looking at the P950 these past few days and at first glance, this does look like a great successor to my current B700 but there are a couple of factors that keep me hesitant about the P950.
    The B700 has 20,2 MP while the P950 only has 16 MP
    The B700 has an ISO sensitivity of 100 - 3200 while that of the P950 is 100 - 1280
    The B700 has an electronic viewfinder while the P950 lacks a viewfinder all together
    Should I give the P950 a chance or should I stick to my B700?

    No, they didn't "backtrack to the P950". The P950 is an upgrade to the P900 series, not the P1000 series. Different camera, different specs. P900 and P950 are both 83x zoom cameras. P1000 is a 125x zoom cameras. For all of its zoom capability, the lens length on the P900 and 950 is much smaller than the P1000. The P900 series is a much lighter camera and I can steady it easily with a tripod. The P1000 is a beast that a tripod alone cannot tame.

    The P1000 is a bit big and 3000mm isn't really all that useful. The P900 applied way too much noise reduction and so I hope the P950 Raw is actually Raw?

    I owned the Nikon P900. Great lens all the way to 2,000mm's, poor digital-telephoto extension, horrible EVF. Drive settings were single, 2fps (too slow), 7-8 fps burst with about a seven-second blackout. It would have benefited from a 3-4fps motor drive setting. Nikon P950 offers a much better EVF which, alone, would make the upgrade worthwhile. Can you tell us what other motor drive setting are available. In the end I stuck with my Canon SX60hs. Its drive has a single, setting, a much more useful 3-fps, autofocus, setting and, in fixed-focus mode, you can can crank out a very long burst of fine-JPEGs without suffering a blackout.

    1) ISO 400 and above is unusable. In other words: BAD for wildlife as well
    2) The superzoom lens might be not too bad, but it has ALL the downsides of superzoom lenses possible
    3) only 4k30 max, no slowmo features, bad video quality in general
    4) its in general just bad for its given price and the fact you can get similar quality by attaching any cheap lens on a smartphone
