I remember that as soon as I learned about Link being in Soul Calibur 2, I bought a Gamecube (with the GC Game Boy attachment) and preordered this game; I also either preordered or outright bought Windwaker, but can't remember if it was out yet or not. I was always a Zelda fan since the first NES game, but I was also a huge Soul Blade/Soul Calibur fan, so it was win-win for me.
Honestly, looking back, Game Cube has a great library of games, some not available anywhere else (Eternal Darkness is one of my faves).

The arcade Soul Calibur 2 had Conquest Mode which was not ported to the home version. It's like the board game Risk with four colors advancing on a map for territory. You register an avatar with a password, join a color, and you fight against other AI avatars registered on the machine, and as you play better the AI of your fighter improves. As you defeat other players your color gains territory. After about eight battles you get the opportunity to fight against your own avatar that you've created. Every time you logged in, you would get to see the progress of what lands were conquered.
It was a brilliantly innovative mode that took advantage of the fact that the same arcade machine would be played by hundreds of players. Sadly it doesn't seem many people are even aware that it existed.

I got an semi off topic question. So I remember my stepdad buying me Soul Calibur 2 for GameCube from Toys R Us but there was another GameCube game I wanted that was ALWAYS SOLD OUT. Anybody remember what that game could have been cause I don’t.

Nothing beats that Dreamcast Soul Calibur. To this day. It was solidly superior to Namco’s Tekken Tag on the PlayStation 2 years later. The character designs got increasingly wackier in the sequels and drifted away from the around the world archetypes that gave it identity. Dreamcast Soul Calibur holds up amazingly well.

SC1 on dreamcast is definitely superior. Even the gameplay easily surpasses SC2's gameplay. I remember when a Japanese dev who worked on SC2, actually admitted that the gameplay in SC2, was deliberately trashed down and watered down, and it was a business decision by the higher ups, to do so.

These days i actually MISS the edgy branding of original Xbox. The virtue signaling and pandering to be inclusive has made modern gaming dull and creatively stifled.
Even caused Sony to feel the need to actually censor niche Japanese games to pander to people who weren't going to buy them anyway. screwing over the actual fans of those franchises.

I remember being so pissed because we had Heihachi on the PS2 while Xbox had Spawn and GC had Link.
Years later, when I bought a Wii, I went and bought SC2 (my only GC game) and a Game MMC on purpose (went to 2nd hand seller with 38,5ºC fever just for the card. Took me around 4 hours on public transportation to go and return) just to play with Link.
And it was money (and health🤦‍♂️😏😂) well spent!!!
BTW, Spawn back then was extremely big in the US. After Todd McFarlane left Marvel and founded his own company, Spawn has been his helmsman for a long time. It even gave birth to a cartoon series and a movie adaptation released one year before SC2. So for the American market, a cartoon character that was the hype + a company (Image Comics) who wouldn't give problems = ease of movement for Namco.

GOOD. GOOD. Now give us more.
From what I remember reading in I think Wizard, or some other magazine at the time that wasn't about video games, of Tod talking about "partnering up" with an over seas company from Japan. He was really excited about it. This had to be in 2001 or maybe even 2002. He wasn't talking about video games, nor comics but it was about his toy company and its current ventures.
What I think happen is that he was in the talks with Temco to make a line of Soul Calibur or Tekken toys, and this somehow lead to him designing Necrid. From there a tiny partnership was formed and that's how Spawn was added as a guest character. I think he did make toys for the series or one of Temcos licenses. And by "toys" I believe he ended up making like 3 or 9 highly detailed statues, that were either given away as tournament prizes or sold for crazy bank.
I also remember either a promo for the game or a short about Tod's business, where he quickly alludes to it-- and I mean quickly; he talks about it [statues] in a passing sentence.
I can't wait to see what you think about 3 'cause 3 changed it up. It is almost a completely different game. And 5 never happened. Just go 4 to 6.

I'm glad I wasn't reading video game magazines back when this game came out. Soul Caliber II + Heihachi Mishima = 1st day purchase. I eventually got the Xbox version because finding Spawn in a good, video game was a challenge back then. Spawn games were cringe, while Spawn being in other games was something to look forward to. Those of us that are good at MK11 know what I'm saying.
