Mine of all time too, so funny how its barely rated in the entire series yet for those who have played the game more then once and learned how to play it the right way know this game was before its time.
My favorite in the series, and my first final fantasy was the first final fantasy. Played them all... well the ones we got, in order up to that point, and all the games that followed. VIII is my favorite by far.
FF8 was my first FF game. I loved it! Squall was super relatable and had a lot of deep thoughts just like I did when I was a kid(and still do). I definitely like it more than 7. Better music, graphics, gameplay, and the card game is unmatched! But that's just my opinion
For the life of me I will never understand why people liked FF7 more than FF8 it's not even close FF8 had more complex battles better story much more likeable characters FF8 was so much deeper than FF7
God the nostalgia of video really hit especially during this Covidspring. I always thought this was the best of them for all reasons you talked about in your video. The only thing i sucked at was the card game. But for a young 13 year old at the time of release, Squall was such a relatable protagonist. Let's be real, we all wanted to go to Balamb Garden like Potterheads wanted to go to Hogwarts
Part of the reason why Squall is so polarizing in part has to do with the game's poor localization, which made Squall come off as much colder than he was supposed to.
This was one of the first FFs games I ever played. Accidentally got this instead of VII but in 3rd grade I had no idea what Roman numerals were. Best accident ever. Loved this as a kid. Loved it even more when I was 21 and now it’s affecting me in a different direction 8 years later after the last run. This really is the most polarizing main FF game but thankfully time has been kind and given 8 time to distance itself as FF7’s sequel and stand on its own two feet. It’s crazy how games like FF8, Chrono Cross, and Vagrant Story that we’ve never seen anything anywhere close to these types of games. Nothing else comes close. I love the mix and blend of realism and fantastical with the art design and aesthetic of the world. FF8 really represents peak Squaresoft doing exactly what they wanted and making a fun adventure that we will never see anything else like it.
The funny thing is that many of us who played it first as a kid didn’t even use the junction system correctly. I just spammed GFs. Now that I’m an adult I’m seeing why this game is better as far as options and customizing.
Once you unlock the full potential of the Junction system through farming ap over exp and utilising the card game......holy shit the game is even better then I originally knew. I'm in my third play through doing the Queen of cards side mission for the first time and my player's are so OP it's great.
How I use the junction system. I don’t farm xp or ap. I make sure every character use only 1 elemental or status assigned to a stat boost and give each character 10 or more of that particular element if the character is not at 100 boost. If the boost is at 100 percent then I distribute the surplus evenly among other characters. I have only 1 person with draw command in my party at all times and I have a 2 draw rule per battle and 4 draw rule per boss battle.

VIII has always been, and remains to be, my favorite FF game. Not only is it one of the first games I ever played, but I remember being blown away by the cutscenes, and they still look beautiful to this day, and I loved the story of these characters.
My favorite game of all time. Was the first Final Fantasy I ever played and the story was far beyond my comprehension. All I knew was Squall's gunblade was badass. This game deserves a remake. A truly overlooked gem.
Ever since i first played this, it became my favorite game of all time . You really managed to explain a lot of its brilliance, like always great video
This was my first FF game. I mean, as a kid I played 7s trailer but didn't get to play it all until years later. FF8 was amazing. Unique. I loved it. I still vividly remember the first mission to Dolet. That feeling of it being psuedo-real was great. Though the characters aren't as fantastical or memorable as 7 or 9, it still brings a depth with it that those games cannot match. 🖤
First and favorite. It has the things I love the most: a true sense of exploration, resonant story, and great mix of sci-fi and fantasy. It's a wild ride, but they stick the landing. There's only one piece of media I can think of that has as outlandish a plot and world but manages to feel coherent and grounded ;)
I love the hand drawn backgrounds of 7,8 and 9. While I understand It has technical limitations - I wish SE would bring them back. They gave their worlds a warmth that I don't think was captured very well with 3D rendered environments.
I played FFX with my dad, and his brother gave me a copy of this game... Four disks... and I still remember about where I got stuck, finishing this game is on my bucket list. Number 8 is still my fav FF all these years later!
I think you're probably right about Squall's character striking too close to home for some players. Love the version of the track that opens this video (can't remember its name).
FF8 was my favorite when I played it at release as a young teen. I haven't re-played it, but I've watched a few retrospectives on it and some story sequences again and I'm convinced it'd still be my favorite if I DID re-play it. Squall has definitely plummeted down my "favorite FF MC" tho lol.
Choosing between 7,8,9,10 is just pointless, everyone a masterpiece in their own right, everyone so different. Don't play 8s success down, 10 million units sold, high rating. Fantastic game. Peak gaming era
FF 8 was my introduction to the series! It’s got beautiful art direction and a story wrapped in chaos, magic, and romance amid despair. It is more polarized though, I see people complain about it being slower, boring at times, or a sucky combat system. I think it’s decent but not among the best FF games. I never beat it though so I can’t say much about its later parts. I love the summons and enemies in the game myself. It’s a very adventurous and magical journey, but something about it just keeps me from caring much really.
Yes. FF8 gets so much undue hate for completely arbitrary and bullshit reasons. It’s infuriating. It absolutely belongs in the upper echelons of the franchise, no question.
After 7 I skipped 8 and went to 9 bc the graphics looked more classic simplistic in 9 (something I appreciate about the older FF games) maybe one day I’ll give this one a try bc I do hear more and more people recommending it
I’m a huge FFVII Fan, & I think it’s one of the best FF games. But I played FFVIII after FFVII a few years ago & I really loved it. I will admit that FFVIII has some major flaws, but I still enjoyed it overall because it went with a new bold direction just to differentiate from past FF games, & I respect Square for that!
When I was a kid I didn't care for 8. I didn't think 7 was the best of all time either, but I liked it. I keep thinking about getting the remaster of 8 so I can give it a shot now that I'm much older. I still can't wrap my head around squall being the protagonist though. Do I really need to watch an emo kid pout the whole damn game? Lol
As someone who's played every final fantasy game upwards from 6) multiple times (excluding 11), I can say that FF8 is my favourite. Everyone always points to 7, but 8 has a much richer story and much more interesting characters.
I love this game, it's a really realistic look at how a classic DnD style world would eventually progress to the equivalent of modern day - It's kind of like taking a Navy seal and comparing their equipment/training to that of an archer in the Crusades. Stuff like the creation of para-magic from raw Sorceress powers and using that to exploit your own stats via proxy GF is a brilliant deconstruction of everything that Final Fantasy had been about up to that point as well and sort of implies that people like Dr. Odine are somewhat aware of the fact they are in a constructed reality. I could go on but I'm no essayist and I hate walls of text. Thanks for this video, good to see non-MGS related stuff on the channel. wait a second gardens are just PFs goddammit
I llove FF8, its my favorite! But evenI know that the game has its rough edges. Honestly it feels like it was rushed and undercooked. The junction/magic-casting system could have been more fleshed out; use spell slots as DND because magic is stored in the mind; and make it so you have to restore it by "drawing" it or use MP and have spells be learned, and you junction a portion of SP and lock away a spell. Want to cast ultima? better not junction it! As for the story, I really feel like it was rushed as well, theres the entire continent of Centra unexplored, and the moon shitting on this planet felt ambiguous and had no ties to the plot other than "witches!" or that it was just allways there. Some of the charecter arcs felt short and weak, the GF's felt unexplained, like eden, was an experiment of Centra or Esper?? God i wish Square Enix would give this game the same treatment as FF7.
It's the principle of the J-system : If you want powerful characters / fighters, you collect spells and you junction them to their stats. And, each character's grimoire is limited to 100 spell types, if I remember well (4 spell-slot / page and 20 pages total).
I always felt like (being a 1st time FF player with FFVII....and not familiar with the fact each game is its own) I was expecting it to have something to do w. 7 and felt let down and although I do enjoy it my expectations were elsewhere
2001 , I was on CD 3 and a friend asked me to lend him my ps1 for a week. he returned my ps1 with the controller chewed up somehow, the 1dst and 4th cd broken....
Once you truly understand the mechanics and the ways in which you should play this game, it's awesome. 10 year old me just didn't have the patience for that. I played this the same way as I did ff4 and ff7 - and if you do that, you're gonna have a bad time. You touch on this brilliantly! If they only could somehow have stressed right from the start this is far from a regular rpg. This is hinted at in the tutorials and the test but honestly, I only found out there was a test when I played this again a short while back. As a kid I just didn't look in each tutorial menu.
glad some few people love this games as i do. been my fave FF games. junction system is way better than material. and its openworld and can be overpowered at the start of the game and gives you relief and enjoy the story until the end.
not really a fan of edgy protagonist like Squall and Cloud. Just hope the new protagonist of FF16 Clive ain't edgy like these two. However, FF8 does have its charming moments, great music, and great environmental designs. Don't understand the hate for it unless one were to criticize character development.
Ff8 was hit hard by psx limitations. The proportional characters that you seem to love hamstring the game engine. There are never more than 6 characters on screen at a time. This makes the game world feel barren. If there need to be more, they are prerendered...most notably Cid in the opening mission briefing scene. They wanted to be like resident evil 2 but that just doesn't work that well in an rpg. This also hurts encounter variety as 99% of encounters are against a single big enemy.
You could easily max yourself before the game really starts by going to the beach and refining the fish to get water magic which did such high stat boasts
I genuinely love FF8 but I know why people have problems with it. It isn't perfect and there are some things I would fix about it but overall it might even be my favorite.
@Nuno The Dude except for that laugh part, oof. Even back when it first came out I was like, "Ugh, what..." but the rest of it is great. Really good battle system. I LOVE 15 though. Especially Episode Ardyn... and Episode Ardyn's title theme... how the hell can you not be moved by that.
Hard to call ff8 underrated when so many people love it. It's Tetsuya Nomura and nobuo uematsu at their peak so there's definitely stuff to enjoy. It's to the truly hard-core rpg player to whom the game really fails. The game was developed in a mere year and a half and it does have a great take on the job system that has potential. The problem for the knowledgeable gamer is that you can buy 10 tents in balamb and refine 100 curaga to junction to your hp. Then you have 3000hp when enemies are hitting you for double digits. Then you can easily keep squalls hp in the yellow and one shot bosses through the first two discs. So there's no point in casting any spells. You're essentially wasting time when you can just switch to squall and win. This isn't fun. The system is horribly imbalanced. Yet I love how simple but deep it is which is the thing final fantasy did the best in the industry up until 13 where things got too simple.
Remember it is all about balancing magic among players. You can junction that 100 curaga but how will your other characters go without curagas. Best to distribute at least 10 cursgas to each and keep the rest leaving you with only 50. Just yesterday I ability converted a chef’s knife for 50 deaths but distributed it among my characters and am only left with 10 death which I couldn’t junction. When I play I like to use my status spells which most have a terrible hit rate except blind and zombie and maybe another few. Of those 50 death spells I already used 20. In a mere 5 hours. Yeah you can buy a lot of tents but how about status potions, Phoenix downs and g potions. Those are quite expensive. I invested in 40 lowest level hp potions little by little over time from the beginning of the game as I progressed and thought I would never use them. But when I went to get the brothers gf I encountered a skeleton enemy that took about 9-12 cure spells to kill per encounter and that is because I mix my attacks with normal attacks because time is a wasting if you spam Magic. If I decided to spam magic I would use about 16-19 cure potions per encounter. I didn’t want to burn out all my cure spells and had to rely on my potions of which I used 25 in that dungeon that day. The skeleton. Enemy also had ac1 hit kill attack at the end that always landed because my cure potions weren’t enough to stop it fast enough resulting in me eating about 9- 12 Phoenix downs in that dungeon and 120 cure spells. You see it is good to spread out your wealth among other things.
I never got into IX. VIII is arguably superior to VII, but perhaps less accessible? Even if it's been debunked I still think Rinoa as Ultimecia makes the story better too
I think it ruins the moral point of the story, but it does highlight that Ultimecia could have done with a bit of a backstory. Though as that would be a future-story for the world of the characters, that might have been difficult.
I’m sure it is but I can’t get through it. I couldn’t get pass the style or battle system. Plus I loved the Tetra Master game in 9 so much. So trying out 8 was just not really for me.
It never was underrated. People seem to forget that it sold over 9 million copies in an era were consoles did not sell nearly as much as today. Monster Hunter World didn't achieve that number as for now, let that sink in. It was just overshadowed by 7.
Ff9 was objectively superior in graphics, presentation, and gameplay, but was a lame return to old gameplay mechanics following the backlash against ff8. Even the ads boasted of a return to a story which had crystals. Ff8, more than 7, 9, 10, or 12, actually took chances with the story and the gameplay. The active time battle, junction /draw system, realistic art style, and eschewing of the ensemble for the sake of a love story were all totally original in ff games. Too bad they wont take risks again.
No, it is accurately rated. I love the atmosphere and some of the characters but i cannot stand the gameplay or the execution of the story even if I respect the ambition.
This game's themes and story were too big brain for normies. That being said, it's gameplay was rather wonky and easy to break, making the game too easy mechanically to play.
Final Fantasy 8 is my favorite game of all time, it's good to see people coming out and finally giving it some love
Mine of all time too, so funny how its barely rated in the entire series yet for those who have played the game more then once and learned how to play it the right way know this game was before its time.
Yeah mate I concur, that may be why I have a Balamb Garden tattoo :)
Don’t care what anyone says. FF8 is my all time favourite in the series.
Me too!
Was it your first?
Same, it was the 4th one I played.
Same!
My favorite in the series, and my first final fantasy was the first final fantasy. Played them all... well the ones we got, in order up to that point, and all the games that followed. VIII is my favorite by far.
Man, I'm proud that this was the very first Final Fantasy I have ever put my hands on back when I was little. That opening is always in my memory. ❤
Same the Opening, ifrit mission and that kick ass mission
Same
Seeing Squall smile at Rinoa in the end, always moves my heart.

Yeah same when i was growing up at 17 I was the same way, That.s why I related to him a lot
This one is the best ff i've ever played, with unique systems , story and that card games, wow its define my childhood
FF VIII was my very first FF. I liked the junction system and loved the Triple Triad minigame.
The funny thing is that many of us who played it first as a kid didn’t even use the junction system correctly. I just spammed GFs.
Now that I’m an adult I’m seeing why this game is better as far as options and customizing.
so true
Lol yes

My favorite game of all time, since the first time I played it back in 2003.
No other game will ever take its place.
Ever since i first played this, it became my favorite game of all time . You really managed to explain a lot of its brilliance, like always great video
This was my first FF game. I mean, as a kid I played 7s trailer but didn't get to play it all until years later.

playing FF8 right now and it's as good as I remember back in 1999. it's really unique.
After years I finally convinced my friend to play the game. We have the same minor gripes
my fav FF. I rarely see 8 get the love it deserves. Good video!
I really love this game. The (card) mod spell making actually makes this the most replayable game in the series IMO.
Tyvm for such an awesome overview of an underrated game that I personally really enjoyed and made a lot of difference in my life
This was the first final fantasy i played to completion; has a special place in my heart
Sad how Squall ain't even recognized in his own game only Kingdom Hearts.
I think you're probably right about Squall's character striking too close to home for some players. Love the version of the track that opens this video (can't remember its name).
I guess it's liberi fatali.
it is my fave game of all time... i would say yes, it is majorly underrated 😂♥️
FF8 is always the one i go back to for comfort, it's a great game. The music quality and quantity with never be topped imo.
Currently doing a Remaster play thru now. Really digging and actually loving the Junction System and Enemy scaling a lot!!
That opening gave me goosebumps. Magnificent pairing of visuals and music!
👨🍳 💋
FF8 for me is the most epic, both game and soundtrack
FF8 was my favorite when I played it at release as a young teen. I haven't re-played it, but I've watched a few retrospectives on it and some story sequences again and I'm convinced it'd still be my favorite if I DID re-play it. Squall has definitely plummeted down my "favorite FF MC" tho lol.
STILL my favorite game of all time.
it's my favourite Final Fantasy
I’m just one of the people who think VIII is alright. But I don’t think it deserves the hate it gets
My absolute favorite FF
What version of fisherman horizon do you have in this video? It’s beautiful
Choosing between 7,8,9,10 is just pointless, everyone a masterpiece in their own right, everyone so different. Don't play 8s success down, 10 million units sold, high rating. Fantastic game. Peak gaming era

my fav final fantasy
If they could remake it with a more simple junction system without drawing and using MP, it would be better
Still my fav ff to this day
Fuck yeah. My personal favorite FF and in my top 10 games.
oh that music at the beginning.

sqaull is my fav video game character he has his reasons for being antisocial and hes a straight badass
FF8 is in my top 3 FF games. I personally like it more than 9. The story gripped me more
VIII is my favourite

The lunar cry is a natural phenomenon which occurs every now and then.
But I agree with you, characters like Selphie and Zell are under-developped.
Regarding Eden, you actually steal this GF to the most powerful ennemy in the game, Minotaur back at theDeep Sea Reaserch Center.
Yes. Yes it is.
I LOVE FF8
ff8 had huge flaws but this game means so much to me. I love it
I always felt like (being a 1st time FF player with FFVII....and not familiar with the fact each game is its own) I was expecting it to have something to do w. 7 and felt let down and although I do enjoy it my expectations were elsewhere
Just another one here too say FF8 is also my favorite and will always be
2001 , I was on CD 3 and a friend asked me to lend him my ps1 for a week. he returned my ps1 with the controller chewed up somehow, the 1dst and 4th cd broken....
There 3 type of people in the world.
FF7 normies.
FF10 virgins.
And FF8 Sigma Chads.
I Have wanted to see more of this games world ever since i first played it
So much stuff that could be expanded on
Divisive or not, FF8 is one of the best in the series. Screw those haters.
Once you truly understand the mechanics and the ways in which you should play this game, it's awesome. 10 year old me just didn't have the patience for that. I played this the same way as I did ff4 and ff7 - and if you do that, you're gonna have a bad time.

FF8 was the game that made me first buy a memory card.
Oh and Triple Triad is my favourite card game ever.
FF 8 is def underrated !
One day, this game Will be remaked ...
Knew it was going to be a good video when venetian snares is the intro :))
YES!
But this world's population has been wiped out by all those sorceress' wars. There's a lore explanation to the world being uninhabited.
You could easily max yourself before the game really starts by going to the beach and refining the fish to get water magic which did such high stat boasts
no one's mentioning venetian snares intro?
FF7 is my absolute favourite, while FF8 grew on me over the years. Love it!
The reason i buy ps 1
Anyone: tries to have a meaningful conversation
Squall: Whatever
very underrated , the gameplay , storyline, OST , love story and triple triad the best ever videogame of all time
I genuinely love FF8 but I know why people have problems with it. It isn't perfect and there are some things I would fix about it but overall it might even be my favorite.
Why underratetd, in my opion its the best title in the series so far.
I loved ff8 I liked leon more cloud
Believe it or not, April 1st (1984) is my birthday, and now ye know. And yeah, I felt 8 was better than 7, but it didn't age as well as 7 or 9, imo.
Happy birthday
Feel like 9 is overrated and funniest part? I prefer both X and XIII over IX.
When does final fantasy VIII talk about mental illness or depression ?? 😅
Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots is the best game ever made but Final Fantasy 8 is my favourite by far.
Squall was so fine 😩
OHMYGOD THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT he’s like literally so🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
Yes
No, it is accurately rated. I love the atmosphere and some of the characters but i cannot stand the gameplay or the execution of the story even if I respect the ambition.
IX is my favourite from PSX era, altough VIII is second place :) I liked VII the least...
This game's themes and story were too big brain for normies.
That being said, it's gameplay was rather wonky and easy to break, making the game too easy mechanically to play.
Yes.
