(Sorry the first upload of this video got messed up during the export, Boss! Here's a fixed version.)
23 Years ago, Squaresoft's FINAL FANTASY VII put JRPGs on the map for Western audiences, and in the process, helped fundamentally redefine video games as a worldwide phenomenon. But what led to such a revolutionary release? How did it relate to the fracturing of a long-standing working relationship between two titans of the Japanese games industry, Square and Nintendo? And would you believe the game was finished in just over a year?
In this, the last entry in my look back at the 1997 classic, I dive into the creation of FF7: what led Square to enter the 3D gaming space, and how they had to leave behind Nintendo and embrace Sony in the process. Along the way we also discuss the importance of technology by Silicon Graphics, how the game's story changed during development, how FF7 is put together on a technical level, and more! You won't want to miss it.

What were the development issues with Romancing SaGa 1? I know Secret of Mana was supposed to be developed for the snes cd add on before it was scrapped, but I'd always assumed RS1 began development as a regular cartridge.

100 million way back in the mid 90s spent just on advertising? That sounds wayyy to much to believe. Triple a games in the current day have smaller budgets in their entire development. Are you sure about the 100 million spent on promo?
Regardless this was a sick video man really liking these!

It took me a little bit to find the source, but here it is! "This could only have happened in the context of Final Fantasy 7, a $45 million production with a US marketing budget of over $100 million" www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-06-02-final-fantasy-7-retrospective

@@FuturasoundProductions wow thanks bro really appreciate you digging out the info for me. Am I the only person that's shocked they spent soooo much money on advertising? Over double the development budget! Also back in the 90s 100mill must have been a lot more man. Im surprised a ps1 game of all things had a 150 million budget that's crazy man. Keep up the good work anyway bro I'm about to check your other vids.

@@RENZEENO square couldn’t afford to let ff7 fail in the west. The 3 cd game was more expensive than regular games because they had to buy 3 cds per game. More over than that, square needed to establish its JRPGs to the west. This 100 million seems like a lot but the amount of sales, plus exposure, plus gaining a great business partner in Sony was crucial to squares future success so it was worth every penny for them. Square goes on to be a big developer on the PlayStation with Final fantasy as a series being (26.39 units sold. Followed by Tomb Raider (25.9 units sold and followed by Crash Bandicoot series at 25.53 as the top 3 series sold. Sometimes the exposure, credibility, and future success out weighs the money lost to advertising.

I remember that time and I definitely believe they spent that much on advertising. I saw FF7 all over the place, even in my local grocery store! Between that and commercials, ads in gaming magazines and whatnot I just had to have a Playstation with that game.

You make a connection from Frank Zappa to Nobuo Uematsu and I'm curious if this is based on something the latter has said? Have you found in your research Uematsu citing Zappa as an influence? Or was it more speculative due to Zappa being arguably the most progressive of the progressive rock musicians of that era? I am just curious. Being quite fond of and familiar with both composers' works, such a connection wouldn't surprise me. It's clear that Uematsu is happy exploring the full palette of genre conventions and has no interest in limiting his work to any particular musical idiom, just like Zappa

You can change the textbox colour by going to config then selecting window colour (EDIT: if you mean the yellow writing within text for character names? That's a mod/ROM Hack)
