The golden era of RPG's were the Snes, between 93' to 97' roughly. The golden era of gaming lasted to approximately 2005-08'. The era of MMO's started in 06' for reals and peaked around 2010 I believe where it hit a downward trend by morphing into what it is today... uh, mostly crap honestly. Roughly like this. I can't say when the golden era of Arcades were.
I would argue that the last truly great “old school JRPG” came out in the Xbox 360 and went by the title “Lost Odyssey” Given it was a Sakaguchi & Oematsu led project like FF1-6 were, the innovations & story/other features in the game proper felt like they were a proof of concept for how a full-3D Turn Based RPG could both work and look amazing in the “HD Gaming Era” Too bad it didn’t take off like it shouldn’t and we went the other route…
This revisionist history is something to behold. Graphical capabilities were especially a focus back then. Hell, people legit argued Castlevania 64 was more impressive than SotN because the 3D graphics made them. FF7 itself, as well as games like Metal Gear Solid, were lauded for being graphically impressive. Wind Waker was shunned for its artstyle (often conflated with "graphics") despite being a high quality game with a solid story. And storytelling never went away, just look at the NieR series or the recently released Metaphor ReFantazio - things really haven't changed that much. The industry has always pushed graphical fidelity, and there's always an audience for the storytelling. That was true back then, and it's true now
I agree, i got FF7 ,FF8, FF9, FF10, & FF12 on my Switch like its the NES/SNES Era all over again... As much as i think FF13 isnt all that gr8, I'd LOVE 2 add it 2 my Switch Collection too...
The 2d backgrounds and 3d sprites was one of he best ideas for this game. It doesnt look AS DATED as the other like xenogears that did the reverse. And im STILL impressed by some of the backgrounds today.
the twin horn ability's MP cost may seem random, but it's actually specifically FFFF in hex, meaning the game likely uses four bytes to determine MP cost.
Its kinda sad that nowadays you'd be hard pressed to find devs as passionate about their game as this guy was, they learned brand new technology, hired people from another country, and relentlessly tried to perfect the game just to release it for $50. Even the same company is like "here's the exact same game, pay us $207 for it" more than double than the cost of ff7 original if we count for inflation at $97.
right? imagine stretching out a 30-40 hour rpg to 150 hours stretched across 3 rpgs taking up most of the decade to even conclude if remake part 3 comes out in 2027 or 2028
I know there is at least one scene in the PlayStation version (at least in my German version) where they show Tifa's mouth. It's when they are alone outside Highwind after Cloud sent everyone else home.
Oh this can be explained. So basically the native PS1 versions don't have mouths by default on the model when they wander around. It's a disabled feature. Once brought over to PC this was reenabled so everyones mouths can be seen on field. However certain cutscenes like the Highwind scene did enable it for the purpose of expressing the scene better. Basically was done only as an exception for such scenes. Here is a small example actually: cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Ys9VwHw3b8TuPnAHqHh8ia-1200-80.png
I’m positive that the PSOne had the capacity to handle more polygons than the N64, if I remember correctly, the N64 could display 150k polygons, while the PSone could generate 300k.
I love the 'what ifs' of this game. What if it was made for SNES or N64? What if this/that content wasn't cut? But my biggest what if: what if Square never lost (ie deleted) the source code? There were rumors of FF7-9 being remastered for the PS2. Had source code never been lost it probably would've happened. And decades later they could keep uprezzing and improving assets. It would've been amazing to see all the little details fleshed out in higher res. And we wouldn't have gotten the abortion FF7R turned out to be. Younger generations could play the original in perfect detail.
@@TheObsessiveGamer I appreciate the effort but a few still slipped through. 4:52 you can see that the character models used here in the cut content section for honeybee in are ones from a mod. 13:54 uses modded character models as well.
SNES, PS1 AND PS2 REALLY FEELS LIKE A GOLDEN AGE. The industry really has suffered when graphics became the focus instead of story telling.
Yeah, I remember even how I was dispointed in RPG games in PS3 era compared to how many great RPG we got in PS2.

It's weird to have FF7 on a Nintendo console after all these years thanks to the Switch. It comes full circle.

Sakaguchi was the heart of FF. Since he 'left' Square (unofficially fired), it has never been the same. His passion oozed in his games.

40 hours of FMV cutscenes? Surely that’s a typo?
For sure. That's gotta be 40 minutes, as that's what the final game basically has.
