Over Christmas break in '82, I went skiing at Heavenly with Kelly's son Kirk, who told me about his dad and him working on cars out in their front yard. Kelly showed him how to shrink the metal in a fender that was damaged. Kelly was a car guy, who worked on his own cars. Maybe that is why they used some high performance engines to start the engines on the SR-71.

Kelly is often misquoted as you do. He wouldn't call his engineers "stupid". He admonished them to "Keep it simple AND stupid." He wanted the structure to have a low part count (simple) and low tech controls (stupid). This would ensure reliability. :)

Outstanding doc !!! Brought back so many memories. My Dad was career AF and often served in a liaison capacity with "civilian" aero companies. Before his death, in 1996, my Dad told me how, in the late 50's he'd worked with the Skunk Works folks helping with procurement. He was not too thrilled by Groom Lake, as the first time he was there, he got stung by a scorpion.
But the point of the story is that he was invited to join. And he would have had to "retire" from the AF to do that. He had just over 15 years service, at the time, and just couldn't do it. He also said it was the worst decision he ever made.
BTW... my Dad was very secretive. He never said anything about what he was doing or what he saw. His story was simply: "I am helping a civilian company who is doing work the AF gas an interest in". That's about it ... I even asked him if he'd seen an SR-71 up close. He said: "Of course, but I can't talk about it". And that was about 1996. Dude could keep a secret !!

Awesome video. I was born at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis , New Mexico when my dad was in the USAF. The entire BlackBirds family of aircraft are my vary favorite of all times. I feel the SR-71 really showed what could be done. The only other air plane that i know of that never got shot down was the F-15 initially designed and built by McDonald Douglas and then became an Boeing air plane after Boeing bought McDonald Douglas. Lockheed had bought General Dynamics giving Lockheed the F-16 and other planes. I have been lucky enough to live just south of Seattle , WA - home of the Boeing Air Craft company and their Museum Of Flight which has the sole surviving M-21 / D-21 set. Also there's a recovered cockpit form a Blackbird that crashed during service. It's cool being able to sit in the cockpit. Besides BlackBird - I thought that they could of been named - the Dagger , Slicing it's way through the skies. Imagine that the SR-71 Daggers how imposing of a name that would of been. The Okinawans gave the SR-71's the nickname of Habu because it looked liked a hooded cobra to them.

Very nice story, He is basically the chad of aircraft creation. Your stuff kinda reminds me of THE SQUIDD, documentary like videos of tales of greatness. You should check his stuff out you might like it. I do feel though, you should've gone more into this mans drive to create, because the people who keep making better moves every step of their life are few and far inbetween, it would've been nice if you looked into the factors that drove this man to perfection but other than that, great video and keep up the good work man.

This SR71 topped up at Mach 4.5 across North Korea with multiple surface-to-air chasing it!. Even though the pilot knows those missiles could not catch it, he was really nervous gunning the afterburners to the max!. Hell, anyone in that situations would have done the same. To hell with structural integrity shit, if it could not hold, it does not matter anyway.....What a great plane , scram-jets used for the first time in a prolonged flight...

0:17: ✈ The SR-71 Blackbird is an incredible achievement of modern engineering, capable of flying at three times the speed of sound and twice the altitude of a commercial airliner.
4:07: ✈ Kelly Johnson's work on the design of the Model 10 aircraft put Lockheed on the map as a first-class aircraft manufacturer.
8:07: ✈ Lockheed's early attempts at jet propulsion were rejected, but fate intervened when Bell's design failed, giving Lockheed another chance.
11:55: ✈ The Skunk Works team designed and delivered the first American fighter jet in 150 days, led by Kelly Johnson, in 1943 during World War II.
15:26: ✈ Lockheed's aircraft engineer helped the United States gain an advantage in the defense establishment, but faced new challenges with the Soviet Union's advancements in bombers and ballistic missiles.
19:43: 🛩 The video discusses the history of the U-2 spy plane and its role in gathering intelligence during the Cold War.
23:30: 🛩 The SR-71 Blackbird was a superior replacement for the A-12 plane, with a larger size and enhanced capabilities.
