Very good choice but it's the Tavor. It's always the Tavor. Nothing is better. Nothing likely will be for a long time. BTW, did your Galil have a bottle opener? I loved that feature.
@@BasedPatriot-USAnot to nit pick but is it possible he put or the previous owner put a 8inch barrel lol mabe your right but guns get modified shit they make 5 inch useless 556 barrels ...to correct a man about a rifle you never seen is crazy to me
Omg! That will definitely take the starch out of someone's panties. I run a HK SP5 for home defense backed up by a Beretta M9A1 and I got a 5.56 AR nearby should the situation warrant it. Would love to try your Galil. Probably outdoors though.
I got the SFAR about 6 months ago, put about 1200 rounds through it so far. Maybe 10 different manufacturers...zero malfunctions. Best part is I picked it up for $925. I'm a happy camper out to 5-600 yards.

I’m a big battle rifle guy because there is no substitute for actual long range power and effectiveness. I’ve got M1 Garand’s, BM-59’s, DSA FN FAL, PTR 91, Ruger SR762, piston gun, I bought a SFAR that I gave it to my brother brand new in the box as a present since he didn’t have a modern AR10 type gun. I’m really looking at getting an IWI Tavor 7 and I would sure appreciate you doing another video on it. Thanks again for another great video. 12/05/2023 update I went to the big gun show in Phoenix and sold off a M1 Garand Tanker and a post WWII M1 Carbine and got just enough to buy the only Flat Dark Earth Tavor 7 at the entire show for $2,051.34 out the door and bought three MagPul 25rd mags separately. Living in a free state with a concealed carry license is sure nice, a little paperwork and no wait at all.
@@Vader4260 I haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet. I know that most people are like really, what the heck? I haven’t even taken it apart yet. I thought a very grip on the front, an optic, a magpul OD sling mount and a Vickers sling. I haven’t even touched it in a month or so. Just too much going on. Thanks for asking though.
Love my SOCOM m1A I forgot when I first got mine I know it was some time after 2012 when I got out the Marines I went to buy my first rifle and fell in love with my socom m1A ..it's got that classic look with a modern spin I never met someone who didn't like them
I’ve had a LWRC REPR with 16” barrel for about 8 years and love it. It’s a piston driven AR10 style rifle and has a left side charging handle. It wasn’t cheap but it’s built like a tank, is more accurate than me, and has been a great overall gun.
Oh, we sold one of those. Could send rounds so fast / accurate to the extent it was too boring too shoot. Finally ditched it. Too heavy for anything other than bench shooting or maybe an apocalypse with less running or the consistent calorie supply to feed me 8k a day consistently.
Praise to you for buying quality there is so much junk out there my attitude is if you can't afford quality wait save your money. The problem is there are so many prople that wouldn't know what quality is if it walked up and bit them in the you know what. I'm sure the junk gun industry is glad for that fact.
@@RockinRackI have a 308 Revolution DI that is awesome. Zero issues other than the original magazine but I have about 30 Magpul that are very good magazines for it. I also have the Minuteman that I haven’t seen any issues with. I’ve had both about two years now and only a magazine issue but Magpul makes that problem go away.
@anthonybrown2426 I have the renegade, 415, and revolution as well. All very nice guns. The rouge was very interesting but because of the lightweight features like the very thin pencil barrel it heated up after about 5 shots and would throw wild flyers. Even from a cold barrel best groups I could get were 2 moa+ It would be a decent emergency rifle to keep in the truck and take out something if you had too. But definitely not my first choice for any scenario honestly.
The Rogue barrel is medium contour and my groups haven’t opened up. My groups out of the Rogue have been steady at 1.5 MOA with FGMM 175 grain. Hornady 178 ELDX is also good ammo.
@RARufus it's possible I got a lemon. I like pof in general. Had a christensen mpr that was very inconsistent in 300wm that I sold. Had a lot of rifles I've sold because they weren't consistent sub moa but the rouge and christensen were my top 2 fails. Don't even have a 3rd those 2 were in a class of fail above and beyond. The revolution shot and preformed fine though almost got one in 6.5 but already had a dd5 and pws mk218 in 6.5 and both were .5moa
@TheMasada05 Yeah it's factory stock right now but I plan on putting a muzzle break on it, handguard, trigger and stock. Not to say that the way it comes from the factory is bad but it does have a lot of recoil to it.
He won't mention that though. This is the biggest gun snob channel I've ever seen! This dude doesn't live in reality and understand what "budget" or affordable is.
For the most bang for your buck, any DPMS pattern AR-10 is the way to go. It's the unofficial standard for parts commonality. I saw an Anderson 16 inch rifle for $750 just yesterday. PSA and Aero Precision make rifles that you can buy parts for right off the shelf at your local gun store. Granted you may not get all the bells and whistles but you can upgrade easily like an AR-15, no proprietary parts.
I have a PSA AR10. I called wanting to purchase a spare bolt and they said their bolts are proprietary. Not sure if they really are other than what PSA told me.
@@TheOnlySgtRock I built a PSA 10 from separate purchases a few years ago. Parts are interchangeable just like parts for an AR15. I think you talked to the wrong person.
I just recently started making a shift to 308 in my defensive rifle setup, I went all in with the PSA Sabre line and I love it. I am still keeping my AR15 setup which except for the lack of full auto is put together exactly the way I carried on deployments, going with something familiar and proven in my own hands is better than a swing and a miss with a setup that I haven’t had any real world experience with plus there is some nostalgia looking in the corner and seeing a Colt M4A1 fully kitted out the way I like it. Thank you for all the amazing content.
I'm like that with the M16A2. I learned with it and have so much time on it that to this day when I pick one up it just feels like it belongs in my hands.
@@andrewcarlson2178 My Grandad said the exact same thing about his Garand which he kept locked n loaded behind the the bedroom door until the day he died, its funny how service creates habits like that.
@@Stranded-N-Paradise damn! I'm not that old! 🤣 It is pretty amazung how habits can be ingrained in us for so long. You hand me ine of those with iron sights and I can still shoot better than most people with optics. I still firmly believe that 20" barrel is the best unless you're kicking doors
The Sig Tread 716i should absolutely be on this list. Confirmed with Sig that it has a CHF barrel. Also shoots well suppressed! Has good features and accepts a Geissele trigger.
I think for a "working man's battle rifle," we have to mention the Aero Precision M5E1. I have a couple of them and they have been outstanding, especially for the cost. They run around $1200, depending on the options, which are extensive. Aero has good customer service, and the M5 is about as standardized as AR-10s get. My first M5 was a 16 inch mid-length that has went through several thousand rounds without a single hiccup. She mostly eats M80 ball and will do 2 to 3 MOA with just a 3.5x Trijicon TA11J on top. When the 2019 ammo crunch hit, I put a case of steel cased Wolf through it, and she gobbled it up. I run her hot, put her away dirty. Wipe down the BCG every 500 rounds or so and she chugs away without missing a beat. I run around on mountains with her and she has taken a pile of game. I couldn't ask for much more from her. If you need a functional large pattern AR and don't have DD money, I highly recommend the Aero Precision M5E1.
Same here, aero makes a really nice 308, i have a 16" that i spent no more than 1000 on the rifle,99$ blem lower with no blems,450$ r one upper from calssic arms with stainless barrel and adjustable gas block, 120$ nickle boron toolcraft bcg, breek war hammer charger, armaspec 45 degree selector, armraspec 2 stage buffer shock absorber, the thing is as good as it gets for the price, i dont see where the money goes when u buy these expensive rifles
Same here. Can’t say enough about mine. Only hiccup I ran into was with their breach charging handle. It wasn’t compatible with magpul prs stock. It was just short of clearing the cheek comb even though it was only slightly elevated. Switched to a radian and problem solved. Love my Aero’s!
My favorite and go to rifle for almost anything is my POF Revolution DI in 308. I was fortunate to get one a few years ago before the prices when up. It's been run hard in training programs, hunting, and back packing. It's never let me down yet, my favorite and I trust it
The FAL has been my default for 308 since the 80s. Even have a 22" 260 Remington upper by DSA for it. I have a few FAL, foreign & domestic. I was recently enticed to AR10 with 6.5CM. I'm honestly not a fan of the platform. Jury is still out on the cartridge itself. Nice review as always!
I built an AR10 back in 2019 and while it was fine and affordable, it was so heavy I found myself not using it. So, I ultimately sold it and replaced it with a Tavor 7. While the Tavor is still heavy, the bullpup design means its easier to manage for me and overall length gives me options. I'll probably stick with that.
Love my Scar 17s! Also have the Zastava 77, while heavy is a great 308 AK. Runs everything and accurate. Looking at an AR 10, likely go with the tread 716i
2nd on Zastava; csspecs has 10, 20 and 25 rnd mags for it, but even with "just" 20 rnd mag that thing becomes even heavier. Its nice to have options tho.
A few years ago a friend at the range bought an AR-10 from PSA. It was on sale for $600 or $700 it think. I shot it a few times and it was very nice. Reliable, accurate, moderate recoil. If someone is on a budget, I recommend looking at PSA.
@Holtenstein 308 vs 6.5 depends on your use. Do you need to be flat a bit father out, then 6.5. But 308 is fantastic, cheaper to buy, cheaper to reload, easier to find.
Got me the IWI Tavor 7. Compact power house with Acog and piggy back green dot. 1200 rounds later and has been 100% reliable. My end of the world shtf go to rifle for sure. 308 is way to go. thanks for the video. keep up the good work.
@@FloresTrumpet To be honest it is comfortable to shoot as is, so I have not added the Manticore arms buttpad. And the trigger imho, is very good from the factory. Specially when compared to AR10 stock triggers. I did add the Rx Arms triggerguard/grip which I like quite a bit, since it prevents my hand from slipping up into the trigger. also added the Fab defense bipod which is made possible with this grip. It feels great now and seamless to shoot from prone or bench.
My list-> S Tier: POF Revolution DI(extreme performance/durability, best lower, great features, very suppressible, only 6.5lbs, $2500). THE REST: A Tier: FN SCAR 17S, LWRC REPR, Sig Sauer MCX Spear 308, Tavor 7 B Tier: Springfield Socom M1A,, Sig Sauer 716i Tread, Rugar SFAR. The SFAR comes close to A tier, just too many issues that haven't been resolved. Low cost means nothing if the weapon system can't be counted on.
Watching your sandbag shift backwards with each round fired reminds me of qualifying with the M60 on full-auto (yes I’m that old) and getting up to find that my whole body had vibrated backwards almost 12”!
Say you live in The People's Republic of California and wanted to buy a .308 rifle for hunting and possible defensive use. I'd recommend a Remington pump rifle. Barring that a Browning BLR lever gun. That way you sidestep any future "assault rifle" ban.
I built a Roam Rifle in LR308 using as much titanium parts as possible and the rifle with full mag and scope weighs in at 6.9lbs. Honestly lighter than my lightest 5.56. With it being so lightweight, it just might be my new go to rifle.
The Oracle is a pretty good rifle for the price. Before I retired, I wanted something more capable than the M4 I'd been issued, so I got a16" Oracle and built it into an M5 clone. Magpul slim furniture, Strike Eagle 1-6 on a QD mount, Magpul Pro popups, Fritz linear brake, BAD lever, ambi selector and charging handle, TLR-1 light, DPMS steel magazines, ambi back-plate sling loop, bipod stud. The drop points in the Strike Eagle give me repeatable torso hits on "E" silhouettes out to 600 M, and if the optic goes TU the "polymers" are kept zeroed and also work out to 600. From my competitor days, I have a cache of M118, M118LR, M852 and some ball, AP and tracer. I load clones of the match ammo with MatchKings and GameKings. I make it a point to drill in all phases of ambi use. This carbine has become my "everything" rifle. I no longer compete, but it takes care of home defense, feral critter/varmint control, and deer/hog hunting chores.
Got a 'lightweight' 308 FN FAL mid 90s when they were relatively inexpensive, certainly much less than an AR at the time, when I separated from the Army. Great truck and overall great rifle but eventually moved to the AR 15 due to weight and size. Recently built a DPMS pattern AR10 mainly to see if I could run one competitively. Weight, part compatibility, reliability and cost are considerations when you jump from an AR 15 to a 308 AR style rifle.
I still love my FALs, but got my first AR10/LR308 because of commonality of parts. The FALs aren't well supported anymore. Fortunately, they are work-horse tough.
I saw an AK made in Pakistan that was necked up to .308, and it's the BEST looking Kalash .308 on the entire internet! Zastava can NOT build anything close! A FAL is much better than any Stoner-trash; You have a folding stock, and it's reliable under MOST conditions, less there's an AK of the same cal. I'll link you to that video if you want me to! I've been trying to get feedback on it, but no dice.
agreed and there are even more expensive and poorer AR10's out there including rifles like Smith and Wesson, diamondback or delton on the poor side to lwrc, hk and knights on the high side
If you consider that "choice" then I guess you'd consider it a "choice" in cell phones if you were only allowed to buy a Samsung because they make 3 or 4 different versions of their flagship phone. Personally I would have preferred if he had discussed ONE AR and just threw a mention to some other prices in the AR realm and then mentioned some non AR guns, especially in very different configurations like the M1A or the Tavor 7. I'm a SCAR man myself, but admittedly, while different from the AR platform, it's similar enough that in a video with only 3 guns, it should be excluded if an AR is included
I have both a Springfield M1A Loaded, black synthetic stock, match trigger, match sights, semi heavy barrel. It's good but it's an M1 Garand 2.0. I also acquired an FN SCAR 17. Shorter, folding stock, much better ergonomics, easier to field strip and clean, easier to shoot with much reduced recoil. That's my SHTF rifle and my Bigfoot hunting rifle. My FN FNX .45 is my companion sidearm to the SCAR 17.
Glad you mentioned P.O.F. during the SFAR review. I own a Revolution other and it is an excellent rifle, I'm surprised in reading other reviews on the SFAR that no one mentions the P.O.F. or Frank Disoma.
I've got a first gen 20" POF 308. Weighs 13.5 pounds with scope, bipod and full mag. Great platform but had teething issues that Frank was informed and aware of. Carbine buffer and rifle length gas piston was odd but did shorten the LOP. All the early 308s were overgassed, and this one was pushing brass out to 1-2 o'clock. Frank offered to make it right but I declined and tuned it with a custom heavy buffer and some piston key work. It runs great.
What most people don't understand is that a 308 buffer tube isn't wider or thicker( maybe the HK is, I have no experience with HK), ALL MILITARY 308 rifles like Knights, LMT, etc. use a buffer tube that is LONGER. A REAL 308 buffer tube is 7.75" long. A REAL 308 buffer tube uses an H3 buffer and a rifle length buffer spring. The PROBLEM is most COMMERICAL 308 rifles use the shorter AR-15 buffer tube( 7.25"), an ar15 carbine spring, and a special "308" buffer. This is where most manufactures are cutting cost so they can use parts from an AR15. Make sure to use a real 308 BUFFER TUBE.
Good info. I know the Adams Arms calls the buffer tube an A5 and it is in fact just a longer carbine tube. It uses normal AR15 sized buffer and a “special” spring according to them, which is longer than an AR carbine spring. I’m curious now if it’s already setup as you are stating.
I bought the SFAR and had the DD5 years ago. I didn’t like the DD at all, it was a quality rifle, just way over gassed and not a pleasant rifle to shoot. I bought the SFAR over the summer and couldn’t be happier. Sure some people have had issues with theirs, but mine has been solid so far (500 rounds or do). It’s so light and handy I might actually hunt with it down the road.
I'm pretty happy with my POF Revolution DI. I did swap the Dictator agb out for a Riflespeed for quicker adjustment for w and w/o cans. So far, I haven't found any ammunition it won't cycle with.
Sig tread snakebite se in 308 is like 1500 bucks and is a sweet ar10. It has the upgrades from the regular 716i. Upgraded trigger upgraded muzzle break two toned color. I love mine and for an at 10 made by sig for 1500 imo you can’t beat that.
@@jamescaravello8482when I first bought it I asked the guy was it used and almost didn’t buy it because I figured it had to be cheaply made because my ar15 cost more until I watched a few videos and people were saying the regular 716i was good like Hop so I went ahead and got it. I am very grateful I did.
i know alot of people may hate on it but i just got a psa ar10 wit 18 inch barrel. its been 100% reliable since its 500 rds and its been about 1.5 moa with a 1-6 power primary arms acss.
Smith & Wesson M&P 10 .308’s are pretty good rifles in my experiences with them and come in at a nice price point. Little on the heavy side maybe but that doesn’t bother me too much. Also Sig Tread or Snakebite .308’s have done well for me.
You know I would really appreciate it if you did an updated video on the Tavor 7 from IWI. Like what suppressor works best for the least amount of blow back gases in your face? How much have you been shooting it? What have you come to appreciate out of the Tavor 7 over other bull pups? Thank you very much.
I have a suppressor on my Tavor 7. I am convinced that the 7 was designed to run suppressed. I haven't noticed any gas in my face and it runs like a dream. In fact, my accuracy has dramatically increased while firing it suppressed. It is to the point where I am landing old (manufactured in West Germany) M80 ball ammo on top of each other at 200 yards pretty regularly. The suppressor on my 7 is a Banish 30 - which is NOT a flow through suppressor and have never had any kind of problem. I intended to swap the suppressor between the 7 and the SAR, but love it on the 7 so much that I haven't switched it. The 7 has an adjustable gas block and I just set it to the suppressed setting and it worked great immediately. I have noticed that if I set it to "off" I do get gas in my face with the suppressor - but, I can't help but think that the only reason to do that would be if you were firing subsonic rounds which wouldn't have nearly as much gas. Suffice to say, I LOVE it and think everyone should suppress the Tavor 7.
I have a DD5V4 it’s a bit heavy when I’m out of shape but if I’m in shape it’s fine. I like the fact it is beefy. I also like the reputation that comes with the Danial Defense name. I am by no means casting aspersions on the others if I had the money 💰 I would have them as well.
Few years back PSA was having a sale on complete uppers and complete lowers. Ended up getting a PSA 10 for less than $800. Not the "best" AR 10 but by far not the worst. It has the base lower and 20" 6.5 Creedmoor stainless barrel.
I have the DB-10, BlackGold series, ultradyne apollo max brake, mid length gas system. The thing is a beast, but accurate, forged upper and lower SS barrel 18". Love it! Diamondback has great AR'S too!
Still have my LMT .308 since 2015 and like it but it weighs a ton at 10.5 lbs Three accessories have made it better...One is the JP Armageddon single stage trigger that breaks at a crisp 3 lbs, the 2nd is the POF Roller Cam Pin, with the 3rd being the Jackal Ambi Charging handle by X2 Dev Group. Tim's recommended Savvy Sniper Sling makes it easier to carry. 👍
Lmt is probably a little stronger based off how big and heavy it is. But that's not always a good thing haha I abused that lmt and I couldn't heat it up enough to string shots. After I got a dd5 I ended up selling the lmt just so I didn't have to carry that thing around.
I’ve got a SWORD International 308. Schmidt & Bender 5-20x50 PM Ultra Short LP. Short stroke piston & an awesome rifle. I have a SR30 for home defense.
716i is a great rifle, my go to 308. I’ve encountered 0 issues. I think the biggest thing it has going against it is lack of aftermarket support. Maybe that might change moving forward since India’s military is now using this weapon system to some extent.
lucasmunoz I have the older Battle Tank 716 piston Sig. All in all it's great rifle other than the weight and sadly Midwest Ind. didn't make a hand guard for it like they did the 516 that made it lighter. I with you all the way on the 716i .
I had to by mine in pieces because everything was out of stock. I ended up building a 7.8 lbs rifle with a Saxon 20” barrel. It cost me almost $1000 but it shoot better than I thought it would. What especially impressed me was the light recoil. My 115 lbs wife loves shooting it off hand. I am not going back to AR 15s
POF-USA Revolution is one of my favorite 308 rifles. You can get it in a adjustable piston system or d.i.(with a straight gas tube and 9 postion adjustable gas block). 12.5", 16, 18" Barrels, and 6.5 creedmoor, or 308/7.62×51.....Lightwieght but still comes with a medium weight barrel, not some delicate pencil barrel, the receivers are the same size as a Ar15, and the Piston system is the same design as the P415 that Iraqvet8888 used in his melt down video, so it is a proven reliable system.
burn downs prove the reliability of a gun as much as burnouts show how many miles a car will last. It has never been used and abused by soldiers, and likely never will. if you're going to default to reliability, then sr-25 and 417 just about the only two real options
@rustys.1070 🤣 🤣 🤣 whatever you say boss! There are a thousand other reasons why the POF-USA REVOLUTION has proven its reliability, but it is a youtube comment section, not a Article in a Gun magazine, or a gun blog. If you don't like POF-USA that is fine go spend $12k on a SR25 or $8k on a HK417, I am sure you will be happy with them.
I own several .308 Battle Rifles, but really love my Kel-Tec RFB. The Bull Pup design allows for a longer barrel while still keeping the overall length practical for getting in and out of vehicles. Runs flawlessly with an adjustable gas block and uses the same metric magazines as my FN FAL. With a modern drum mag and bi-pod and an Sig Romeo sight this baby is a beast in a defensive scenario.
I am in agreement withe the Ruger SFAR. if I had the money, I would already have one. However I am hoping Ruger does a gen 2 of the SFAR working out all the bugs, and adding and fixing a few things that could or should have been done.

I was in the navy when the M14 was the fleet service rifle . I once owned a Springfield Armory M1A . My current 308 rifle is a Savage Axis that cost me $300 . For $150 more than a single shot rifle I have four more rounds of ammo with a throw of the bolt .
I love my 20” sfar but it chews up brass something terrible when suppressed. Sent it back to Ruger which was a great experience. Just over a week turnaround time, right before hunting season. It’s better, but still chews up brass more than I would like.
16:45 - The BM 450 bolt has, of course, a .308 size face. The concern of using such a large diameter bolt head and locking lug circle prompted them to build the bolt and barrel extension out of a special steel with a higher tensile strength than standard AR15 bolts. Presumably, the Ruger folks were smart enough to do likewise.
Waiting to see how well the SFAR holds up. The thinner bolt is my main concern, and if those prove themselves over time I'm in. Secondary concern is the adjustable gas blick. For some they work well, but for others the positions are either under or over gassed. I'd likely replace with a Riflespeed for more granularity and easier indexing. I want the SFAR to be a success. In the mean time I'm sticking with my Adams that has the older style adjustable block that requires a Samson rail. It can be accessed, adjusted and cleaned without any tools. The newer low profile gas piston block does allow for a nicer hand guard, but it only saves about 2 oz of weight. Not worth the loss of easy maintenance of the older style. The rifle eats everything I've run through it, standard or suppressed. The piston set up also makes suppressed shooting a lot nicer than DI AR10's.
I have an FN FNAR in .308 that is an awesome rifle which can ring steel with ease at 500 yards. You can operate it like most semiautomatic rifles and the recoil isn’t to bad.
if you build your own you will know every part and how it fits and works. as parts are not standard so some fitting will be needed. so you can spend your money on the things that matter too. like barrel and sites.
Hey, could you do a video on the Adams P2 aars vs Ruger Sfar vs POF Rogue di vs POF Revolution piston? I would really love to know which one of the new small frame .308 rifles is the best, or best for your money. Plus maybe the Roam and Vseven magnesium AR-10s for good measure, so that we have all small and light ones covered.
I put together a Wilson Combat 16" last year. Went with a JP SCS, matched Wilson upper/lower, Radian charging handle, no forward assist, light weight Wilson BCG, fluted Wilson barrel, Wilson bolt with upgraded ejector/spring, atlas bipod, NF Atacr 4-16, American Defense mount, adjustable gas block and have a huxworx flow 762 in the works. Basically wanted to build this thing for years and was finally able to afford it.
I, too was impressed by SFAR. So much so, I plunked down the chips 4 1!! I'm way too old to be a "tunnel rat"/etc. However, I have 65+ years of hands on exp. So, I make a positive stand-by. Mine is 20" bbl/ doubles as deer/coyote/ground-hog/etc medicene. Second AR platform. First is Ruko-Armscor .22 LR!! Small, quiet jobs specialty!!😅
The 13 in 308 sig spear is really nice especially shooting suppressed. I shot 600 rounds with the sig slx shorty suppressor and the rifle on the inside only looked like I shot 100 rounds. Comparing that to any DI gun after 100 rounds suppressed it looks like I shoot 600 rounds through it lol and is extremely filthy. The 308 round is very finaky and some 308 rifles only like certain brands, part of that seems to be that the semi ar10 seems to be the red headed step child of the semi auto world and not as much developmen has been put in as an ar15. Even with that you get more pow pow compared to 5.56.
I built my own custom unit. SLR B30 receiver set & handguard. Proof 12.5" barrel. JP captured spring. Cryptic BCG. SA adj gas block and suppressed. Still deciding on an optic. 1-8 is my preference. And she shoots as smooth as butter with minimal blowback.
Ruger SFAR, or a PSA PA10 are 2 options at or under a $1000. Both have options with 16in and 18in barrels. My PX10(light weight PA10) has an 18in barrel and is sub moa at 100y with wolf steel case fmj. Newer PA10s also have adjustable gas blocks. FocusTripp actually suggests a 14.5in AR10 for up to about 500y, and suggests going Creedmore after that... Makes me kinda want a short 308.
I have both the 20" and 16" SFARs. The 20" is a dream to shoot. Sub MOA at 100 yrd with my handloads. 1.5" groups with match ammo, but with a better trigger may go to 1" PMC, CBC, Armscor will group at 2" on average. The 16" began as a headache with cycling. Stuck cases, FTF, FTE jams....mostly with Armscor 149grn. The break-in period has reduced this some and setting #2 on the gas adjust is the best setting. I discovered that Ruger missed removing metal flashing in 3 of the gas ports on the bolt carrier. They are of irregular shape from the drills not traveling deep enough. Both of my rifles had this and some at my store that sells them had it too. When I removed the flashing with a needle file, the stuck case issue ended and now I just have FTF issues with Armscor. I think I'm getting closer to rectifying the problems. The SFAR 16 seems very sensitive to ammo selection and gas pressured associated with their adjustable block and the AR15 bolt action trying to handle a .308 cycle environment. The 20" runs like a top without issue.
My favorite .308 has become my Springfield Armory Saint Victor. I have it topped off with a Primary Arms ACSS-HUD-DMR optic with 4 - 14 in OPMOD Limited Edition. I also run a Holosun HS507C on the Swampfox mount in the 45 deg position just in case "something" were to get too close. I know this seems to be a rifle that often gets overlooked, but she's got an awesome trigger, the build quality is fantastic, and she delivers downrange consistently. I feel like my Victor is priced outstandingly for the weapon that Springfield Armory is producing. Give it a whirl sometime and perhaps you'll have a new favorite in your collection.
Aero Precision M5 Enhanced receivers and handguard with light weight forged aluminum barrel nut, Faxon fluted heavy profile 18" barrel nitrite coated 5R rifling, reduced weight 308 BCG (pick a brand), TriggerTech duty two stage roller sear trigger pack, Magpul SL stock and MOE+ rubberized grip, pick a muzzle device and or suppressor, call it a day. If you want more weight reduction, Strike Industries charging handle, take down and pivot pins, lower parts kits made of aluminum. Aluminum castel nut and rear plates. Expect 8.5lbs .308 rifle with correct weight reduction.
have a low miles Ruger SFAR, which has been 100% so far. I left it on setting 2. Placing an order tomorrow for a suppressor. The Ruger SFAR has mild recoil. A Zastava M77 is also on hand. It is reliable, OK for accuracy, but is violent in the recoil department.
Great Video! I'm really considering a couple different 308 options myself, specifically a 16" PA10 with a low power optic, either a red dot, maybe a 3x magnifier, maybe a prism, maybe some offset combo... and then I've also really wanted a PTR pistol as a brush gun/trail gun, maybe truck gun.
@@JohnLee-jk5ew Thats a great setup for GP or Recce. Thinking something a little slicker though, more purpose built for close range, like a 2/3x prism and canted dot, or even a micro dot on top and a canted micro prism. The idea would be to have an overwhelmingly powerful small arm for QRF or point defense, like guarding the entrance of the neighborhood, or neighborhood QRF
LOVE my SFAR, took a little white tail with it this year .. shoots 1" groups @ 100, and has been totally reliable.. if your bolt in any AR platform goes 10k rounds, it has exceeded its service life, that's considered a wear item, i'd assume the barrel is a smooth bore by then too
@@brennelement6451 When LMT start selling the 16'' piston barrel. That would be a close option for both price and performance. Or LMT 308 DI is GTG if you go Huxwrx. But until then, KAC is too expensive, HK civ version is not good for the price, LMT DI 308 is overgased and no adjustment. So SCAR17/20 is the best option besides that silly warranty clause.
I'm a fan of the SFAR also. I had an itch for a .308 gas gun ever since I sold an FAL clone maybe 25 years ago. I saw your video, and found one and bought it. I had nothing but problems. Would not extract cases. Contacted Ruger, and they paid to have me ship it to them. Had it back with a new barrel assembly within I think a week and a half. Hasn't had any problems since. Shooting Federal 168gr BTHP, it was able to shoot 1 MOA 10-shot groups (two in a row, which was all I had). It's closer to 2 MOA with Hornady 168gr ELDM - not sure if it doesn't like the poly tip in the feed path. But 2 MOA on a light gas gun really is good enough. I haven't tried shooting groups with 147gr ball type ammo yet, but both suppressed and unsuppressed it has been 100% since they fixed it (maybe 500 rounds). There was a significant difference in recoil once I took the brake off and put on a can. The brake was just obnoxiously loud - you won't make friends on the range with that thing, but it sure is effective. The gas block was pretty carbon-locked when I went to swap gas settings. Kroil and a cheater on the longer hex wrench helped, but I would say pick a setting and leave it. The little wrench in the grip isn't going to do any good after a few hundred rounds. For now, I'm leaving the can on it full-time. The whole setup weighs a little less than an old Colt 6721 with a similar can and optic setup I have. If it keeps on running like it is, this is the happiest a rifle has made me in several years.
Definitely would like to pick up a SFAR but I do like my Tavor 7 as well because it runs anything and everything I have put through it, about 5k mixed brand ammo and hand loads. What’s your thought on it??
My 308's included PWS, DPMS, CMMG, and COLT. I dumped them all except for my beloved COLT LE901-16SE battle rifle. Love the thing! Eats everything I feed it, and asks for more. Haven't seen one 901 mentioned in the comments below, which is mind blowing to me.
I have a Galil ace with a 8" barrel in 308. Great for home defense because it's a rifle and flame thrower all in one.

@@hemaccabe4292 to be fair, the Keltec RFB trumps the Tavor 7 in every category, except maybe accuracy.

I went to the big gun show in Phoenix and sold off a M1 Garand Tanker and a post WWII M1 Carbine and got just enough to buy the only Flat Dark Earth Tavor 7 at the entire show for $2,051.34 out the door and bought three MagPul 25rd mags separately.

Just too much going on.

I have several 308s but my favorite is the Socom M1A from Springfield.
Mine is the M1A Scout Squad which as you know is very similar.
Love my SOCOM m1A I forgot when I first got mine I know it was some time after 2012 when I got out the Marines I went to buy my first rifle and fell in love with my socom m1A ..it's got that classic look with a modern spin I never met someone who didn't like them
I still want one after all these years. Great rifle in my opinion.
It’s heavy, loud, and has a front sight post wider than my thumb, but damn is it fun to shoot.
@@Justin-rv1rp my sentiments exactly
I have the 20" REPR and it's a MONSTER. Add a scope and a 50 round Magpul drum magazine and it will give you a CrossFit workout on the range. lol
I vote for the POF Rogue 308 rifle. It’s 5.9 lbs and a very good lightweight 308 rifle. The Ruger SFAR is also an excellent choice.
My rouge was garbage
@@RockinRackI have a 308 Revolution DI that is awesome. Zero issues other than the original magazine but I have about 30 Magpul that are very good magazines for it. I also have the Minuteman that I haven’t seen any issues with. I’ve had both about two years now and only a magazine issue but Magpul makes that problem go away.
@anthonybrown2426 I have the renegade, 415, and revolution as well. All very nice guns. The rouge was very interesting but because of the lightweight features like the very thin pencil barrel it heated up after about 5 shots and would throw wild flyers. Even from a cold barrel best groups I could get were 2 moa+
It would be a decent emergency rifle to keep in the truck and take out something if you had too. But definitely not my first choice for any scenario honestly.
The Rogue barrel is medium contour and my groups haven’t opened up. My groups out of the Rogue have been steady at 1.5 MOA with FGMM 175 grain. Hornady 178 ELDX is also good ammo.
@RARufus it's possible I got a lemon.

Have the same gun. It's been great.
@TheMasada05 Yeah it's factory stock right now but I plan on putting a muzzle break on it, handguard, trigger and stock. Not to say that the way it comes from the factory is bad but it does have a lot of recoil to it.

My S&W MP10 was bought new when they first came out. It is a reliable and quality made 308.
Don't forget Bear Creek Arsenal has really stepped up their ar10 game
I just recently started making a shift to 308 in my defensive rifle setup, I went all in with the PSA Sabre line and I love it. I am still keeping my AR15 setup which except for the lack of full auto is put together exactly the way I carried on deployments, going with something familiar and proven in my own hands is better than a swing and a miss with a setup that I haven’t had any real world experience with plus there is some nostalgia looking in the corner and seeing a Colt M4A1 fully kitted out the way I like it. Thank you for all the amazing content.

When were DSA selling FALs in other calibres?
I built an AR10 back in 2019 and while it was fine and affordable, it was so heavy I found myself not using it. So, I ultimately sold it and replaced it with a Tavor 7. While the Tavor is still heavy, the bullpup design means its easier to manage for me and overall length gives me options. I'll probably stick with that.

All zastavas are heavy but my m70 is so incredibly soft shooting I’d imagine the 77 is too. Easier follow up shots are a definite tradeoff.
My psa 308 has had 0.0 issues. Could use a lighter handguard, but it's ran perfectly and it is more accurate than I can shoot.

Exactly what I'm thinking. The PSA Sabre M110 looks pretty good right now. But .308 or 65 creedmoor?
@Holtenstein 308 vs 6.5 depends on your use. Do you need to be flat a bit father out, then 6.5. But 308 is fantastic, cheaper to buy, cheaper to reload, easier to find.

@@therealjoshtoddmaybe you should make your own videos. You're just whining 😢.

Love my Revolution!! Amazing rifle
Ruger gunsight scout Stainless, Leatherwood scope

Look at the huxwurx flow 30 and the lmt ion 30 for low back pressure cans

Thanks
I appreciate that information.
@@andyinva1098 very interesting, thanks
I had a DB10, and was a fantastic budget rifle.
Still have my LMT .308 since 2015 and like it but it weighs a ton at 10.5 lbs
Three accessories have made it better...One is the JP Armageddon single stage trigger that breaks at a crisp 3 lbs,
the 2nd is the POF Roller Cam Pin, with the 3rd being the Jackal Ambi Charging handle by X2 Dev Group.
Tim's recommended Savvy Sniper Sling makes it easier to carry. 👍
I love my DD5V3. most underrated and one of the best AR-10s on the market. Lacks nothing that a KAC or LMT offers
Love mine too. Does not feel huge and difficult to maneuver with like some.
Ordered a DD5V4 last night. Can't wait to get it in my hands.
Lmt is probably a little stronger based off how big and heavy it is. But that's not always a good thing haha I abused that lmt and I couldn't heat it up enough to string shots. After I got a dd5 I ended up selling the lmt just so I didn't have to carry that thing around.
Patiently waiting for a 308 Jakl cause can’t afford a mcx spear
I’ve got a SWORD International 308. Schmidt & Bender 5-20x50 PM Ultra Short LP. Short stroke piston & an awesome rifle. I have a SR30 for home defense.
I'm surprised to not see the Sig 716i on this list. Did you have problems with the rifle that made it so it couldn't qualify?
716i is a great rifle, my go to 308. I’ve encountered 0 issues. I think the biggest thing it has going against it is lack of aftermarket support. Maybe that might change moving forward since India’s military is now using this weapon system to some extent.
I have a 716i as well it's pure gold a fantastic rifle.
So far I love my 716i. My first AR-10. Puting a new scope on it tomorrow. Just wish there were more accessories for it.
@TheMasada05Except with the Sig you’ll actually have a working rifle (compared with the SFAR at least).
lucasmunoz I have the older Battle Tank 716 piston Sig.
Great video. Would love to see comparative testing on various .308 ammo for long range accuracy & terminal affects.
I am in agreement withe the Ruger SFAR. if I had the money, I would already have one. However I am hoping Ruger does a gen 2 of the SFAR working out all the bugs, and adding and fixing a few things that could or should have been done.
My main rifle is a CR308 from Haenel. Its basicly an after market compatible HK 417. So its piston driven.
With a timney trigger.
You live in europe?

I settled on the 7.62, 16" Galil Ace (Gen 1): Uber reliable, built like a tank and accurate enough for my needs.
For what it's worth, I found a 5 pound $150 single shot .308 to be pretty handy!
Yep. Super light to carry for a defense rifle.
What suppressor are you using? I like the OSS 762 QD, don't get that problem
@@stephenvphamI’m using my Omega 300. I’m sure a lower back pressure can like your oss would help.
perfect timing! thinking of replacing the CAI FrankenFal battle rifle, put it back in original form the way it should be!
Love the timing of this video. This was definitely for me.
I have the Diamondback DB10 and it's been great a tack driver with 168gmm
Diamondbacks are awesome! Great people there as well.
I just ordered their complete 16" upper that came with 10 pmags. I'm hoping for good results.
@p.f.r.7190 great purchase. You won't be disappointed.
Keltec RFB Hunter is always the right answer. Dead nuts reliable, high velocity with a 24" barrel, and a compact and light rifle that takes FAL mags.
Love mine too, it's actually more accurate than my scar.
if you build your own you will know every part and how it fits and works. as parts are not standard so some fitting will be needed. so you can spend your money on the things that matter too. like barrel and sites.
Galil Ace seems like a very underrated choice
I, too was impressed by SFAR. So much so, I plunked down the chips 4 1!! I'm way too old to be a "tunnel rat"/etc. However, I have 65+ years of hands on exp. So, I make a positive stand-by. Mine is 20" bbl/ doubles as deer/coyote/ground-hog/etc medicene. Second AR platform. First is Ruko-Armscor .22 LR!! Small, quiet jobs specialty!!😅
Outside of AR10s, that Tavor 7 from IWI keeps calling me... from the news footage lately unfortunately.
Yes I like the SFAR also, only time will tell if it can hold up. Thats my problem with AR10s replacement parts can be hard and expensive to come by.
The less substantial bolt and the single gas key bolt are my only two concerns with the Ruger. But if it holds up that thing is magic.
It’s a hunting rifle. SFart is it’s nickname for a reason.
my AR10 is a Springfield saint victor. never misses a beat
Not the sig spear... XD
Suprised you didn't go with a M&P 10, seems like a good base level 308 gun.
They’ve been sold out everywhere in my state for months and I think they are DNR.
Hop just released his followup video on the SFAR and what it took to fix it.
Mine too!
I just picked one up. I'm looking for accessories. Do standard ar-15 parts for?
I completely agree with your comments on the Springfield Saint Victor AR-10. This was my choice for stepping into the AR-10 SHTF battle rifle.
Expect 8.5lbs .308 rifle with correct weight reduction.
patriot Ordnance Factory Revolution is #1. It cant be beat at any price. 6lbs compared to HK MR762 9lbs. And 7+lb scar heavy. And more accurate
have a low miles Ruger SFAR, which has been 100% so far.
Think about a primary arms Lvpo 1x10. Might be worth looking into. That’s what my brother runs with a canted red dot
I have a Springfield M1A SOCOM 16 cqb, put a 1-6 optic. Good up close and up to 700.
Great video. Exactly what I was looking for Tim. I really like the Ruger for the price and weight.👍🏼👍🏼
Lr308 pattern build on Anderson or Aero receivers. Riflespeed adjustable gas. Pick the parts that match your purpose.
Nice content, thanks !
Glad you liked it!
LOVE my SFAR, took a little white tail with it this year .. shoots 1" groups @ 100, and has been totally reliable.. if your bolt in any AR platform goes 10k rounds, it has exceeded its service life, that's considered a wear item, i'd assume the barrel is a smooth bore by then too
picking up my first 308 today! Scar 17
You chose well. Top reliability and lightweight piston 308.
Congrats, can't wait to nab one myself. There really doesn't seem to be anything else that comes close.
Springfield Saint Victor AR-10 Beast of a Buy and a Good Battle Rifle
Really hoping CMMG comes out with a 308 Dissent in 2024.
Agreed I just wish it wouldn't be +$3500
I'm a fan of the SFAR also.
S&W's AR10 is not too shabby
I don’t believe Tim has had the S&W M&P 10 on his channel. I’m sure he probably has an opinion on them
I have a DPMS and Bushmaster and both have been good for me.....put about 500 rounds a year each for past 8/10 years. Both were used under 800
My DPMS doesn't like 30 round Pmags. I get more failures to feed than I would like.
Tim had a previous video on which 7.62 NATO rifle he'd take in bad scenarios........It wasn't an AR-10. Go see!
Eagerly clicked this one, hoping he would talk more about that one.
Crazy how few reviews we see on that gun
