Matt Walsh vs Ken Ham & Eric Hovind - Young Earth Creation Debate

  • Eric Hovind offered $10,000 to Matt Walsh of the Daily Wire to debate him on the topic of Young Earth Creationism -- the belief that the universe was made in six 24 hour days less than 10,000 years ago.
Matt thinks this view is wrong and comes from a misreading of the Biblical text and a misunderstanding of science. He also thinks Young Earth Creationism is an unnecessary stumbling block which prevents non-believers from taking Christianity seriously, and took to twitter and his podcast to explain why.
This prompted Ken Ham to respond to Matt's podcast... a response Matt called misleading and obscurant, with accusations of personal attacks, questioning faith and misrepresenting views.
Unfortunately, while these parties were talking past each other, they weren't willing to talk to each other. This is my attempt to present the best arguments from each party, in a way the conversation might go if they all stepped on to the same stage.
The debate that should have been.

As an atheist, I respectfully disagree. Science cannot say whether homosexuality is morally wrong or right, else the naturalistic fallacy would be committed. What science can do, however, is show that certain scientific claims that Matt Walsh makes to prove that homosexuality/transgenderism is wrong are either false or unsupported. For example, Matt Walsh often denies the distinction between gender and sex, which has been proven false by science. Also, the Bible clearly does condemn homosexuality.

How is Young Earth creationism embarrassing to christians? Considering that the Bible clearly states in Genesis chapter 1 that the first morning and the first evening was " first day. And then it says that it was the second day the third day the fourth day? The key word there is " the ".
Newer versions of the Bible says a day. It doesn't say the day. If you look in the Hebrew, from the original manuscripts, it says the first day the second day the Third day. Not only that, if the Earth is older than about 6,000 years old, then all of the timelines and all of the genealogies in the Bible are absolutely wrong. What about the fact that the prophets talk about the Earth being created in 6 days? They don't say that the Earth was created in six days, but they talk about specific days when things were created.

Yeah it's strange how Christians who embrace secular science have more affect on communicating to creationists than well informed atheists do when arguing the exact same thing.
I think it's that when creationists acknowledge that they're talking to an atheist they go into this automatic mode of wave of hand dismissal of whatever the atheist is saying, this being predicated on the presupposition that we're unreasonable for not believing in god therefore whatever we say must be unreasonable and need not be considered let alone evaluated.
But if a fellow ""reasonable"" Christian is making the same points, they're more inclined to not let everything go through their head.
The Christian who already embraces secular science is already arguing from a foundation they both agree with (god). This is why when I argue with fundamental theists I have learned that giving them a bit of rope actually helps them listen. They need to see that you understand their perspective.
And that is the problem I think with many atheist - creationists debates. The atheist is handing too much for them to handle and it's all so alien to them and they end up seeing the atheist as a confused person because the creationist cannot see the connections that the atheist is assuming the creationist understands. We assume everyone already understand the prerequisites for understanding the arguments we're commonly bring forth, but they don't.
By giving them some rope, granting them a bit of their world view, I've noticed creates a much better dialogue and they're more inclined to listen.

How do you have a day without a sun?

    • @fred_derf
      @fred_derf 5 лет назад +8

Genesis 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Genesis 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also
Genesis 1:17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
Genesis 1:18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
So the earth had day time light and night time darkness for two days before the sun existed and we are supposed to take the bible literally. I really don't understand how young earth creationists can believe the crap that they believe.

At one point the bald Christian says when god made the earth the fruit trees were created with fruit already hanging on them. Was the fruit season--appropriate? Summer fruits only on the trees that happened to find themselves in the middle of a summer season? And what part of summer? Early or middle or late? So were there some early fruits already rotting on the ground? And what about the fact that many fruit trees need the bees to cross pollinate them etc in order to bear fruit? These and other questions need answering.
