#5 Set up your tent for the first time on a trip in the rain with your kids “helping” you. It’s awesome 🤣🤣
I did this but with my fiancé not kids. we got 5 inches of rain in a 12 hours period starting about an hour before setting up camp. We somehow managed to keep the interior of the tent dry. Were going again in a few weeks so I broke out the tent again just now and am going to make sure we practice setting it up a few times before we attempt that again.
Lmao, that's great. 2 years ago, my gf and I were going camping. We decided it would be awesome to go to a concert 3 hours from where we were camping first. We didn't even start set up till 230 am. Thank God it wasn't raining, but like a dummy, I took one of my larger tents. It took an hour to set up bc I had to keep moving and adjusting cause I couldn't see the ground well enough with just a head lamp. Good times lol

I have 11 tents from a 1 man to a 12x12 canvas that i use for my hunting camp. This is the weekend where everyone of them gets set up in my backyard to make sure they're clean for the season, and i have all the gear in the right bags. Nothing like fall camping, happy trails everyone.
If your back yard is large enough, you should consider getting a picture with all 11 tents set up at once. I bet it would be a cool shot!
@jpoconnor5744 lol that would look cool, but I don't think I'd have the room. Maybe if I didn't stake all the guy lines. But even then, I'd have to poop scoop my whole yard because I have 2 large dogs, and that's just not on my agenda this weekend lol
I really hope you read this: LMNT is not cleared by the FDA to prevent altitude sickness. What you said could result in death/lawsuits etc. Please research stuff about making drug claims. You have to be careful with your wording. You seem nice and it would suck to see damage to someone else and yourself because you simply didn't understand the laws/language about drug claims.
Also- at high altitudes, you're probably dehydrated because of the low vapor pressure. The symptoms you listed are all dehydration symptoms, and if electrolytes are helping, then it's probably dehydration rather than altitude sickness.
I mean, I could be wrong- there could be research on electrolytes and altitude sickness that was done that shows that there is some statistically significant difference in people using certain ones versus not, (I haven't looked) but that doesn't mean that LMNT has gone through clinical trials to prevent or treat it. What happens is that someone thinks it will prevent altitutde sickness, conclude that they aren't suffering from it since they are using LMNT, so they don't get treatment, bad health things happen to them and bad legal things to you. I hope that helps.

After 50+ years of setting up tents, I thought I knew how to do it. I was wrong! For many years I didn't have the vestibule-type rainfly and when I finally got one I didn't realize the zipper should be closed when staking out the door. I staked out one side with the door open and it worked just like you showed. Doh!!!! Thank you for showing me how to correctly set up the rain fly.
I just watched 1 of your short videos and discovered my 5 yr old Grandson knows a little about camping and really wants to go camping and wants a red tent and to roast marshmallows. I gather he watched something about camping on one of his learning shows. He is so super jazzed and serious that we have watched a few and I saved a playlist of your videos. Whole lesson for his homeschooling this morning. Lol! Now on my list of things to have him experience. Thank you!
The other benefit of having the seams of the rainfly over the pole structure, is that is where the velcro tabs that you can attach to the poles are located. Looping the velcro tabs on the rainfly to the poles stiffens the tent even more in the event of heavy winds.

Too many scout camps where a family is bringing their brand tent out with the box still on it. So fun to watch them try to set these up especially if it is a more complicated type of set up.
Hey Dan, I came across your channel not long ago and have thoroughly enjoyed your videos. First, it looks like you are a brother in Christ. I really enjoyed the video of you and your son handing out water filters in Egypt. Watching your videos has encouraged me and my wife (age 61 and 58) to start tent camping again. It has been close to twenty years since we have tent camped. I have purchased a new tent and some gear and we are scheduled next month to Camp at one of the Florida State Parks. I like to take a sorta heavy backpacking tent like the trailmade 2 and replace the stakes with ultralight stakes
You could use a 1/2” PVC pipe T fitting to push in those stakes instead of your shoe.

Thanks for the ⛺️ tips, always love your humor. One extra tip I witness my first time backpacking siblings get confused with: the “spice” packets in backpacking meals (not spices, air stabilizers). 😮 not really a ‘tent’ tip, but still thought it was funny.

You missed the key reason for setting up your new out of the box tent prior to your trip. Makeing sure all parts needed are there and all parts are in working condition.
Was getting ready to jump in and add dead trees/branches when you got there. This is serious stuff for sure. We call them widowmakers for a reason. Even a relatively small branch can still weigh quite a lot, and is going to have MANY sharp pointy bits. A 50 lb branch is fairly small as these things go, but 50 lbs falling on you with many sharp points from a height of even just 10 feet has a very high likelihood of killing you. And if it's a dead or even mostly dead tree, don't camp anywhere near it because you have no idea which direction it would fall. However tall it is, double that for safety and pitch at least that far away.

I really like Dan and have lots of time for him. I also understand that this has its uses for some but it's also really basic. It might have been good to have a comparison with a trekking pole tent like a Duplex or Durston as they're generally more difficult to set up correctly. All the same, thank uou for the content. Here's a Tip that most people dont no. When staking out a tent start at one corner and then go to the cross corner pull the tent tight then go to the nearest corner and pull it tight then finish with the last corn stretching it tight. This eliminates wrinkles most people just start at one corner then then next one going around the tent like a clock
That depends very much on the shape of your tent. It doesn’t work that way for most of my tents: Durston, De Waard (tipi style) and Nordisk (tunnel).

You will enjoy the drive on the Icefields Parkway going to Jasper. You will have spectacular views even without a hike. I live in Calgary so I've done many trails in the parks already. You won't be disappointed. Just make sure y'all read the park rules as it's a great place to camp and hike but not the bushcrafters place. You will also get the grizzly 🐻 lecture I'm sure.

Mind if I ask what part of the state? That's my home state, and people have no idea how beautiful parts of it are. Mainly bc we keep it close to the vest so people don't flood here too.
Arkansas is absolutely beautiful, one of my favorite places to hike/explore! This time we are heading down to Richland Creek Wilderness. Been to the Ponca area multiple times and have floated the Buffalo River a couple of times (upper and lower). I'm excited for this trip!

I did exactly one of these mistakes recently :D I pitched my tent with the door for the inner layer open and tons of flies got inn there. So I struggled to chase them out 😅
Great video as always, Dan! Would you use a compression sack for you tent (for more room in your pack)? I’ve seen both sides of the argument, some say it’s ok or recommended, some say the zippers might cause tears. What do you think?

Dan, love all of your videos and I'm a big fan, but you're misleading viewers by saying that electrolytes cure altitude sickness.
The ONLY way of curing altitude sickness is by going down in elevation. If you've "cured" your altitude sickness by taking electrolytes like LMNT (also my brand of choice) you didn't really have attitude sickness, you had Hyponatremia, which is the lack of electrolytes in your body.

Oh and just a heads up there are hot springs in Banff, sometimes it's nice to relax in them after a hike. Especially when it's cold out. Oh and I know your plans are different but with the Banff gondolas if you hike up them it's free to take the gondola down. Just another thought. Oh and hey I was just watching one of your older videos from 4 years ago it's a Q&A video you end up saying one hike on your bucket list is The Glacier National Park it's pretty cool your getting the chance to finally see it. One other thing you mention in the video is one of the reasons you got into this stuff is cause of the youtuber David Grey you should totally see if he wants to go on this trip or at least meet up with you.
Hey Dan, any plans to do a paid hike that is less educational and no/minimal services(i get youre running a business)? More of a meet, greet, and hang over the course of a 5ish day hike for the more seasoned hiker while youre in Canada?

When you see a tent in a campground, on a tarp that is sticking out on all sides, do you explain to them where the water is going to go when it rains? or do you let them learn from experience?
That's how I set up my tent, but I've got a "bath tub bottomed" tent, the extra tarp protects the bottom, getting water between the two layers isn't really a problem
Our camping tent is so confusing we have to read the directions every time LOL. It is just weird.

Viewers should be aware that some bugs are attracted to stagnant water, but other bugs are attracted to flowing water, so the fact that water is flowing does not mean there will be fewer bugs. The infamous black flies of New England only breed in flowing water. Black fly bites are far worse than mosquito bites, and can persist for several months with very painful lesions and intense itching.
Man I wish I had heard of LMNT Before I went to the maroon bells! That would have helped my sea-level self for sure. 😂 I'm going to check this out today!

Make sure you know which part is the fly and which part is the body.

One huge mistake to avoid: If a tent requires more than one person to assemble it, don't try to do it alone!
The best way to set up a tent...is to not set up a tent. Yea tarps ! Tarps rule - tents are silly. 😊
If you really enjoy drinking that stuff they give you the night before your colonoscopy, you will love downing some LMNT! It tastes like soap!
Hearing rocks falling could indicate wildlife that is moving around. Consider any danger from dangerous wildlife.

#2 Footnote: Not practicing setting up your tent pi$$ pants falling down drunk. If you can do it wasted, you can do it sober under extremely adverse conditions.
I really have to say, when virtually every popular backpacking RUclipsr is hawking the same electrolyte drink, there's really only two possible reasons. Either the stuff is really good, or the marketing budget is really lucrative for their channels. I absolutely will not be buying LMNT under any circumstances, because it is made with artificial sweeteners, and I loathe the metallic/medicinal aftertaste of artificial sweeteners. That taste makes me immediately regret ever letting the product touch my lips, and my tongue can detect all artificial sweeteners even in minute quantities. The only sweeteners I can tolerate are natural sweeteners, and the stevia leaf extract in LMNT does not qualify as a natural sweetener-it is not a sugar, it is a combination of glycosides which humans cannot metabolize. Sugar is an essential nutrient, especially during periods of intense physical exertion, so there is absolutely no reason to eliminate sugar from a sports drink. I prefer Pocari Sweat, from Otsuka Pharmaceutical, in Japan. It's a bit expensive to buy in the US, but it provides more nutrients and is tastier than Gatorade.

I’ve been a diabetic since I was 11 and it’s nice to have a drink with NO SUGAR. When your limited on a drink to help with hiking it sucks when you have to knock the sugar drinks out.
I actually do swear by it and am not being paid to say so.
Just so you know LMNT does not have the bad aftertaste that stevia usually has. I thought I wouldn't like it until I tried it and now it's the only drink mix I will use.
