My wife and I got married to this song. She walked down the isle to this tune and my eyes were watering with tears of joy. I couldn't be more happier that I got a second chance at life. If anyone is reading this, just remember that no matter how many scars you carry, remember that you can get through this tough game we call life. Good things happen to those who pursue it. Redemption is a beautiful thing.

This song reminds me of my family that has now broken to pieces. Being a man, I feel a need to not show emotion. But I doubt anyone will read this. But if you do, and you are...stay up. And find that song that keeps your memories you cherish the most alive and warm. Never forget who you are.

I read this....going through this. Lost my job bullied by "leftists". Lost the ability to see ly daughters wake up and go to sleep each night. Hardest thing I've ever gone through....I'm missing my babies and missing their growing "moments". I haven't handled things well...didn't have a good upbringing. This song brings me to tears...it's beautiful. Reading what you wrote has helped....and also brought me to tears. My soul is strong but does grow weary. God bless you for the pain you've experienced.

At 31 years old, I've yet to find love, and observing those around me who have experienced it leaves me pondering what joys and challenges they've encountered. Comparing their experiences to my own, I can't help but lament the passage of time and the missed opportunities to share my life with someone special. Each day seems to slip away in loneliness, and I'm left grappling with unanswered questions about when, with whom, and how I'll find love.

Remember when our songs were just like prayers
Like gospel hymns that you caught in the air?
Come down, come down sweet reverence
Unto my simple house and ring
    And ring
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Ring out those ghosts on the Ohio
Ring like clear day wedding bells
Were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell?
    We'll never tell
Come to me clear and cold
    On some sea
Watch the world spinning waves, mad machine
Now I've been crazy couldn't you tell?
I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell
Now I'm covered up in straw, belly up on the table
Well, I sang and drank, and passed in the stable, hmm, hmm
That tall grass grows high and brown
Well I dragged you straight in the muddy ground
And you sent me back to where I roam
Well, I cursed and I cried, but now I know
    Oh, now I know
And I ran back to that hollow again
The moon was just a sliver back then
And I ached for my heart like some tin man
When it came, oh it beat and it boiled and it rang
    Oh, it's ringing
Ring like crazy, ring like hell
Turn me back into that wild-haired gale
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal

Just one tiny correction to the lyrics.......should read “like gospel hymns that you called in the air”..... in some small churches, a person in the congregation led the hymns and this was known as “calling a hymn”...These hymns were most often unaccompanied by piano or Instruments.

I was a Kid trying to go through the way that was designed by God for me. My grandfather born in 1899 in Montana, worked on a ranch, picked potatoes in Idaho had a gold mine Cornucopia Oregon. My grandmother born Nebraska 1911, lost her father at 10. I’ve visited the remains of Cornucopia OR twice, and have a video about it on my channel. That’s a heavily nostalgic place, even if you don’t have a connection to it. The fact that you know someone who worked there while it was in its heyday is incredible. This song and video makes me think about the time Cornucopia was active. There’s something oddly heartbreaking about that age being behind us, even if many things today are better. This song reflects that.

This is so sad, deep, and true. Your comment reminds me of the Seamus Heaney poem, while all the others were away at Mass. I wanted it to read it at my mothers funeral, but everyone thought it was too sad. I thought it was real and true, and my mother would’ve loved it if I’d read it.
      Here:
When all the others were away at Mass
I was all hers as we peeled potatoes.
They broke the silence, let fall one by one
Like solder weeping off the soldering iron:
Cold comforts set between us, things to share
Gleaming in a bucket of clean water.
And again let fall. Little pleasant splashes
From each other’s work would bring us to our senses. So while the parish priest at her bedside
Went hammer and tongs at the prayers for the dying
And some were responding and some crying
I remembered her head bent towards my head,
Her breath in mine, our fluent dipping knives -
Never closer the whole rest of our lives.

I am going through my most difficult moment in life. I am getting divorced from the love of my life after 23 years, 4 countries, countless experiences and 3 kids in common. No anger on any side, love just faded away from her... when for me it is even more intense than ever. I need to tell around, look for support... but i am alone in a new town, her town, where we moved few years ago, very very far from family and friends... i feel sorry for my kids, i feel sorry for our love, for our beautiful but uncompleted history and broken family, i am afraid of my future in a place i do not belong, a life that does not fit me, tied by the invisible but indestructible bonds of the love to my kids... i think writing those words could help me to express my feelings and cry them out. Listening to this song i understood a new feeling. Redemption. The feeling that looking at the past can be tough, our ghosts a heavy burden... but there is always hope when you keep moving to the horizon. A new life will open in front of you, different, but new , with different things that may bring wonderful things if you are open to move to this without anger. Just keep the experience and learnings in your bag, throw away all bad feelings. I hold to this feeling, to these songs, to keep me alive and kicking in the new life that is coming. My greatest gratitude to all these geniuses that can help curing our souls, giving us hope and sense with something as beautiful, yet so fragile, as a song...

I truly believe this is the most beautiful song ever created. I'm someone that is obsessed with music, listened to songs from all different genres and eras, with a preference towards old music. And yet when I discovered this song in December, I was literally speechless. It touched my soul. I have listened to it at least once almost every day since, I'd even say it has helped me cope with the grief of losing both my grandparents in 2020. The words just resonate with me, as does the 'circle of life' vibe. "Turn these diamonds straight back into coal." And of course, the instrumentals just fit perfectly with it.
I can't imagine anyone topping this for me personally, and I had actually already thought that once when I heard San Luis for the first time in October. So until Gregory comes out with another song that is basically a transformative religious experience for me, this reigns supreme. :)

I remember sitting on my couch with my s/o at 17. I had recently moved out and had been consumed with work from an early age. Soon life gave way to alcohol and smoke. Anyways, here we are early this one morning as light shone through the haze of the house. I light a joint and we turn the music on, “remember when our songs were just like prayers” I look over and through the smoke I see the tears streaming down her face. Oh how far we had fallen.
I think it’s fitting that a song about life grabbed us so.
I still remember the early morning light and the smoke hanging in the air.

    Lyrics
Remember when our songs were just like prayers
Like gospel hymns that you caught in the air?
Come down, come down sweet reverence
Unto my simple house and ring
    And ring
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Ring out those ghosts on the Ohio
Ring like clear day wedding bells
Were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell?
    We'll never tell
Come to me clear and cold
    On some sea
Watch the world spinning waves, mad machine
Now I've been crazy couldn't you tell?
I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell
Now I'm covered up in straw, belly up on the table
Well, I sang and drank, and passed in the stable, hmm, hmm
That tall grass grows high and brown
Well I dragged you straight in the muddy ground
And you sent me back to where I roam
Well, I cursed and I cried, but now I know
    Oh, now I know
And I ran back to that hollow again
The moon was just a sliver back then
And I ached for my heart like some tin man
When it came, oh it beat and it boiled and it rang
    Oh, it's ringing
Ring like crazy, ring like hell
Turn me back into that wild-haired gale
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal

Someone had to write this song down. This is one of those tunes that lives its own life apart from human conventions despite its being entirely about the human experience. It aches to be released from silence into the lives of people, and such a song can exist for decades without anyone hearing it, because it takes a special soul to render it onto paper and into notes. I'm so grateful it lives with us, now, and that Gregory was the person who captured it for us.

It’s been a month since my partner said ”it’s over”. 10 days before she was making affirmations of total love. So all my value judgements and compass points were utterly shattered. I pretty much had a mental breakdown. I care for sick kids-couldn’t do it for a while.
I needed a rock to hold onto, something true, something real, something that knew of pain. And I found it in family here in Australia, but also in your American homegrown: Patty Griffin (When it don’t come easy. Heavenly Day. Kite...many more). But this guy touched my heart and soul like he was heaven sent. I have shed too many tears, I don’t want to be this anymore, and this guys genuine spirit is bringing me home to the person I used to be. Thankyou Gregory. Hugs to you.

To explain what this song truly means to me. No attachment to anyone, aside myself.
We have developed into beings whom take no pleasure in the most miniscule of sentiments anymore.. Society, as a whole, is so far from anything natural to actually heal our Soul. Why?..
Do you remember the last time you looked at the stars?.. watched the sunrise or set..? Do you notice the patterned dance between Sun and Moon..?
When was the last time you stopped during a walk in an open field, only to close your eyes and feel the gusts of wind.. hearing what they have to whisper..?
Noticing the litter all over our cities and forests, do you ignore it?.. or do you camp riverside, cleaning up the surrounding area simply to do your part in the world and make it a better place to survive for all creatures..? Fin, feather and fur alike.
Where has the belief that living off of the elements and land.. have to be so wildly abused and communized come from?.. why can we not return to simpler times, to have the opportunity of rebuild w/ what resources we were naturally given..?
Back to coal... take away the diamonds and see what we have learned.
This song created a life purpose within me, and am holding Hope that I can live up to that. From my Heart to Yours.. I hope it reaches atleast one who can relate.
Tis a glorious piece of art that can awaken a Heart and put your mind to sleep. ( :

I absolutely love the lyrics of the song.
I've always interpreted it as a very deep song about growing up, seeing the world differently.
Aiming for things so high in the sky that "The whole sky fell".
And in the end of the song he wants to go back into the wild gale, and have the diamonds turned back into coal.
So it's like you chase these things to get to where you're at and you look back and you wish you could go back to when you had innocence. To when you were wilder.
There's certain things I've looked back out in my life that I'm like man even though maybe I didn't have it as well at a certain point I almost wish I could go back there again. Wish you could be the person you were at a certain point in time again.

    Just moved to route 66...
Playing this in a shop that was built in 1933...
The big building echoes and its past and present merge...
I am blessed to be exactly where i am, here an now...
If the mother road was good enough to build America its good enough to rebuild it...
Return to the roots, to the routes...
    See you there...
