The Future of FIGMENT

  • Journey into Imagination with Figment is good. Okay, maybe a little less than good. But you know what Disney did? They filed a PERMIT. And you know what permits mean, CONSTRUCTION. Will this change to the Imagination Pavilion bring with it a new and improved Journey into Imagination? Or perhaps an OLD and improved version..?

Personally I'd love to see a trackless dark ride. Imagine the art section you dance with other cars going down a river of a paper world, each train seeing their own sets, 1 a fair, 1 a forest, 1 a plains. the literature section could have a drop track, the science section could have forced perspective. the possibilities are quite literally endless. I grew up with the original version, and as much as I would absolutely LOVE to see it return, I also recall one of the original Imagineers saying after the first renovation too much damage to the original track was done to put it back as it was. The turntable scene at the beginning was also a HUGE technical problem that resulted in a lot of downtime. So, if I was to propose a new Chapter 4, I would say, make it trackless and bring it back to the original length at least. Now the track isn't the limiting factor. Plus, you can move the riders in any direction you want! Dare I say... maybe even UP to the second story, and potentially even DOUBLE the length of the original, or at least add a good 25% to it? Now, you also have the opportunity to add a thrill factor to the ending, with maybe an elevator drop like ROTR has in it. But, most importantly, I want to see animatronics! They don't even have to be the latest and greatest tech, the originals were fairly simple, but they were effective, they worked! You can make a great ride without spending HUGE money on the latest and greatest animatronics! Give the ride a great premise (like the original), and an anchor the viewers can hold on to and follow along with (like the original), and of course, you already have a beloved character and song, and you'll have the hit we all know Figment deserves.

There’s a ride in Efteling Park called Symbolica which is a trackless ride where guests can interact with parts of the ride with built in modules to each carriage to make random things happen in some sections of the ride. If Disney is thinking about redoing Journey into imagination then they should try to build it close to how it was when it first opened with the guests interacting with elements of the ride.

In the middle there's a figure of Figmet looking lost and looking around. There should also be a scene where you enter a normal room and go through a door and there's some trickery and dark tunnels that make you think you're going back the way you came but when you emerge back into the room everything's been changed from what you saw previously with furnitures moved around and new colors and new figures etc. Maybe the floor is lava! :p

Personally, I also actually love the former “different forms of imagination” theme of the 1980s. It fit into the rest of the whole EPCOT theme park. It was about how art, science, culture, stories, etc. all created the world we lived in. Imagination created all the wonderful things in EPCOT- from World Showcase to The Land to The Living Seas to The Universe of Energy. It honestly might have been more “EPCOT overview” than people think of Horizons as! So I really hope they build upon that theme in the ride again. I know EPCOT isn’t 1980s EPCOT though anymore. So probably not. 😢 Your idea would be a good second though.

  • @cg6711
    @cg6711 2 месяца назад +2

I honestly think that Disney is going to do a retheme of the pavilion and the ride… it feels inevitable and would be a clear win for them in the eyes of many fans, and it would just be a fun and awesome attraction if they did it right. I mean you have the Figment meet and greet (with Dreamfinder/Dreamport references), you have the popcorn bucket incident, you have Figment basically as a mascot for The Festival of the Arts and several other EPCOT festivals… I think they even had a lounge at one point in the Odyssey reusing old footage from the old attraction and things like rainbow imagery to call back on it. What I do find interesting is apparently a contractor listed in the permit is used with a lot of Disney restaurants/general area work. So I think what we might be seeing here is just permits filed for a general revamp of the pavilion (perhaps with a themed restaurant? that would be sick if it was Figment themed). Yes, I guess that includes the bathrooms 😅 But hopefully it means the whole ride will be revamped! I really think it will be. I’d be surprised if they don’t announce it at D23. Might be my wishful thinking! But still 😭

So for the new Journey into Imagination, I’d have a middle ground for the old and new versions of the ride.
There would be a Pre-show first maybe something like the rainbow tunnel, where a worker tells the dream-finder that testing is now almost done, and he can show guest the prototype for his invention. Something like that.
Then at the beginning of the ride, the dream-finder tells us about the labs, and that they have been experimenting with and studying imagination and dreams. But about two or so minutes into the ride, Figment comes out similar to the new version, and “messes up the showcase”. This prompts the dream-finder to introduce Figment, an experiment that he has been working on to bring children’s imaginations to life into one creature. But that they were still working out the kinks. He then prompts them to his lastest invention the dream machine 3000, in which he can enter people’s dreams, as they fall asleep. And this is where the cool sequences come into play.
Figment explains people’s dreams and how they are important to an early development in children and young adults to let their imagination go wild. And he explains that through the tests, they want to try and be able to negate the bad dreams. But the conflict comes in when a creature of the nightmare realm comes out and try’s to wreak havoc on everyone. So in order to save everyone’s dreams from becoming nightmares, they must journey into the realm of imagination to figure out how the nightmare monsters are tempering with the lands and the land of dreams.
This would keep the spirit of both the newer version of the ride and the older version too, with keeping the lab aspect of the ride, but also journeying into the actual world of imagination as well, similar to the old ride.

If bringing back Dreamfinder is essential, a thought that always occurred to me is bringing him back as a grandfather of sorts. I thought that with the institute, that his daughter worked there and had a boy and a girl. Another idea came from reading the Figment graphic novel detailing Dreamfinder and Figment meeting for the first time. I was thinking that visiting Spaceship Earth at the end of the comic led to Figment accidentally sparking other brothers and sisters (Figments) that are themed for the other pavilions as well like a twin dragon with the blue and green colors of the Earth from Spaceship Earth, and has a more logical sense that complements Figment's spontaneous energy. And as a bonus, there would be a society of such where the guests would be "tasked" to explore the reaches of imagination accompanied by their own Figment (which could be any form of creature) Probably call it the Dreamfinders. Anyway, that was constantly on my mind as to respecting the original ideas as chapters and would give people incentive to internally create their own tales.

The Figment costume worn by the Epcot cast member reminds me of “The Road Warrior” character that wore a skull on the top of his head (the Figment costume head looks like a hat shaped like a small dragon face). The Figment costume needs a bigger head on top of the torso.

Maybe some sort of iridescent tint on the windows with a lighting matrix on the structural parts? Think bismuth during the day, and LSD at night lol

I'd hope that no matter what they do they keep it a dark ride or at least don't make it so that you have to have a certain height - I have Dwarfism and I am a huge Disney Parks fan... I am 27 and only 39 and a quarter inches, with skeletal problems so in EPCOT I can only really ride the following: Spaceship Earth, Journey into Imagination with Figment, Living with the Land, Grand Fiesta Tour, Frozen Ever After, and the Seas with Nemo and Friends. I don't want to lose another attraction I can ride! My ride list is significantly smaller for Hollywood Studios and at this rate, I go to HS just for the vibes and three attractions I can actually go on. Disney needs to calm down with the thrilling attractions.

A lot of you would probably hate me but I didn’t even go to WDW until I was 25 despite having been to Disneyland a dozen times before that and 3 times since, so I don’t have the nostalgia for anything to do with the ride or even Figment. So what would I like to see? I’d actually make a new ride inspired by Inside Out, you can still include Figment saying Riley imagined him or dreamed about him. But I would LOVE a proper Inside Out ride (sorry but the spinner on the pier in DCA is such a cop out).

What I want is something what everyone else wants. The return of The Dreamfinder. A comeback from the Original Journey Into Imagination. Figment is my most favorite Disney Character of all time, and I love the character so very much. I want what is best for the dragon, he deserves better. I would want him to be in a happier place. The only thing I can do, is hope that we get the return of a beloved attraction.

The original attraction not only has a longer track but a lot more cars this making it a higher capacity ride. Plus you know the whole actual image works upstairs.....😢😢😢😢. We'll see what they'll do. But I'm not holding my breath

I think we need Figment and the Dream Finder But you could change it up. Maybe show people having day dreams with a pepper's ghost effect. Maybe tie i in o a movie. Maybe show how dreams become progress. One feature I think would be fun is if in he cue for the ride you let guests doodle or draw some thing and hen while on the ride the thing you doodle would be projected in to the ride. This would replace the "See your self on the TV" part. If not doddle, include some other way to interact with the ride and change one scene of the ride with your choices so your imagination actually impacts what you see. This could be a simple case of "Get asked a quiz" and then the ride sends you down one of 4 preset paths that feels like a choice.

I'd be happy to see the '83 version restored; honestly, it was the type of attraction that'd have been kept if it'd been built ten years earlier, the way something like Pirates or Mansion gets preserved, as a certified classic that gets touched up but has its core remain consistent. That said...I really hate when my cynicism shows on stuff like this, but it's hard to think of what they'd do until there's some kind of Figment movie they could attach to the ride, since that's where corporate's head is constantly at, making attractions to do more Disney+ advertising. Heck, it's hard for me to imagine a new era Image Works, since I feel like corporate would thumbs down an expanded area like that because "it'll keep them out of the gift shop for too long" or something.
But if they did go with something fresh, I'd love to see them really go for some psychedelia; the original had a scene based around art and colors, I love to imagine what they could do with modern tech to put together a room that shifts in tones and colors around you in a way that really lights up different parts of the brain.

I'd say get like 8 people carriges and an attraction big enough to house 100 to 200 carriges and three loading docks and also 3 unique starting points or 3 unique story lines each having 5 unique dreams so it could give people reasoning to keep going back.
    Also 3 unique pre-show lines or perhaps a 3 part pre-show...

I was kind of thinking what about a niece and nephew of the Dreamfinder teaching people the value of imagination by bringing us into a world based on all of the imaginated successes and failures with Figment in every scene, and a strange video message from Dreamfinder saying a sad but sweet message that will help the tension.

I mean Journey into Imagination it was definitely a creative ride but at the time Epcot was about learning for the future, so it didn’t quite fit in. Journey into Your Imagination was basically just learning but it kind of lack the creativity. Journey into Your Imagination with Figment its still learning kind of a little better but still lack of creativity. With my idea it can be learning and creativity all in one. I mean products starts of as an imagination which gives the person an idea and if the idea is good they will share it with people. A way to bring the old with the new without replacing it with an IP.

With the newer ride vehicles they have for runaway railway and ratatouille, they should incorporate them into a reimagining of figment. They can do so many fun and interactive things with those vehicles that could help elevate the ride.

I 110% believe it is time to give Journey Into Imagination a major facelift. The current version (thru my eyes) is severely outdated and not good. Remember this was an expansion pack to Honey, I Shrunk the Audience and that show has been gone for over 2 Decades. Now this ride feels so disconnected so obviously the Imagination Institute needs to close it's doors for good. I think a revamp for the ride definitely needs the return of the Dreamfinder, have Figment revert back to his 1983 characteristic and make it feel like a worthy successor to the original and fullfil the spirit of Epcot as a whole.

I just rode it, doesn’t hold up like even older rides do. Doesn’t help when a round glass table in the ride has 1/2” of dust built up on it.

Money makes the world go round. I've always wondered why Apple doesn't take up the sponsorship of the Imagination pavilion. They're the modern version of Kodak in many ways. Bob Iger used to sit on the Apple board. The glass pavilion looks vaguely like an Apple store - and could be modernized by Foster and Partners. The Imageworks could be reimagined to hawk Apple products.
