What Happened To The Astrodome?

  • The Astrodome was built in 1965 and was a stadium like none had ever seen. The first indoor air-conditioned stadium, the luxurious features were ahead of it's time and ushered a new era of consumerism for sports. The Astros, Oilers, and Houston Cougars played their home games at the stadium along with the numerous events such as the battle of the sexes, final fours, and national championships. It was also an entertainment hub featuring concerts from Elvis, the Jacksons, Selena, and many more. But as the Oilers left in the mid-90s along with the Astros a few yeas later, the Astrodome became expendable. An abandoned stadium that still stands because of it's history.

My parents both went to Selena’s concert at the dome in 1995, and little did anyone know, she’d be murdered less than a month after she closed that concert saying “we’ll see each other soon” in Spanish. I also had the chance to go to the dome to see a few monster truck shows, in the range of 2000-2002

Seen my first game there in 82 and got to see my favorite all time pitcher Nolan Ryan. My Dad would bring us from Louisiana each summer to see an Astros game one day and go to Astro world the other day. Moved to Houston in 92 and went to a ton of games during the Killer B's days. Fun fact. Up until the time it closed you could still smoke in the mezzanine level or as we called it "smokin section. Tickets were pretty cheap also.

Speak for yourself. Bud Adams tried to not only get a stadium for the Oilers, but also a multi-sport stadium to help appease the Astros and Rockets too and was denied at every level. He got denied by the city, county, and state for financial help. He even proposed to pay for half of the new stadium himself and was still denied.
It's funny to see Houstonians whine and cry about how the Oilers name and history belong to Houston, but Houston kicked them to the curb because they didn't want to build a new stadium, then two years after the Oilers left, Houston decides to spend double what Bud wanted in 95 to build Reliant Stadium.

The abandoned sports venue that now houses Osteen's church, was actually an NBA arena (called The Summit), beginning in 1975 for the Rockets until 2003, when they moved downtown to Toyota Center.
It is located several miles from the Dome, alongside the Southwest Freeway, in Greenway Plaza.
