The Steroid Era's Forgotten Star

- Juan Gonzalez was signed at the age of 16 from Puerto Rico and by the mid-90s, he was one of the best players in the game. He led the league in home runs and rbis multiple times and won MVP in 1996 and 1998. He was later traded to the Tigers and had a chance to be the highest paid player in the game but did not want to play in the large field. His career would come to an end amidst numerous injuries and steroid allegations which kept him from the Hall of Fame and left him overshadowed.

If you were around for the whole decade of the 90s and watched baseball back then, then no you wouldn't have forgotten about Juan Gonzalez. He was one of the sluggers who I used to greatly admire back then. And he also happened to be my neighborhood friend's favorite ball player.
To me, one of the craziest mlb stats is that Juan González only made the all-star game THREE times. He had a year where he hit 47 homeruns, 144 RBIs, and OPS 1.011 and did NOT make the all-star team
ya the 90s were weird, Ellis Burks was another one who had a year where he hit 344 no all-star team...another year hitting 32 HR no all-star team....The man hit nearly 300 for his career and had a 4-year stretch where he averaged around 30 HR a year for CLE and SF no all-star nods
@ people still over valued the singles hitter
It's up to the fans. Kirk Gibson made ZERO all star teams. The 1988 N.L. MVP.
And that’s why I don’t believe we should look at all star games for players legacies. All stars should not be voted by the fans if we look at them towards payers legacies.
Wait, what? How?
As a Yankees fan, I have NEVER forgotten about Gone-zo. Dude had Yankee pitching for breakfast.
Palmeiro had definitive proof of usage. He tested positive for Winstrol the same year that he went before congress and said "I have never taken steroids. Period."
I guess he meant that he never stole them
Yeah that was a laugh! About a month later he tested positive and was out of the game. I remember the clips of his testimony. 😂🤣
15:21 “no definitive proof” In March of 2005, 2 years after his 500th home run, Palmeiro famously appeared before congress in the steroid trials, pointed his finger at them and emphatically said “I have never used steroids. PERIOD!”. On July 15, 2005, three months after testifying, he reached the 3,000 hit plateau. 15 days later he was suspended after testing positive for stanozolol. Pretty definitive.
As a Tigers fan, I've never forgotten Juan Gonzalez.
I'm so glad he didn't sign that contract with the Tigers.
@001Flange Agreed. It would've completely killed that rebuild. 06 would've NEVER happened had we been stuck with him for 8 years.
He is the reason they moved the LF wall in...
Those early 90s Texas teams were insane, Rusty Greer was a hell of a player as well
If only he didn't get injured so much. Adrian Beltre might have had to wear another number lol
@@Ashura96 Ya he only had prob 5 good years...During those last 3 seasons it seemed like he was never on the field...its a shame he could have been a poor mans Josh Hamilton-type hitter 320 BA with 25 ish HR and a close to .400 OBP
My go to team in that one Griffey jr baseball game 😂
@@Evonypepe I think I remember that!! Dean Palmer would mash in that game
Damn, he had 3 failed marriages before the age of 30? I wonder how many kids he had at that point?
He was a monster offensively
that whole team was dirty. palmeiro, gonzalez, pudge, and canseco.
That volume discount kicks in after three players 😂😂. Don’t forget Sierra. El Caballo loved the juice.
@@Headhunter_212 thank you. i had forgotten about sierra. just coincidence they are all hispanic?
Jaun had that "yeah I just farted" smile😂
I can’t lied this comment made me laugh so hard. It’s so random but funny too. I bet you had those smiles too lol. Don’t lie
@9:20
Juan Gonzalez got really pissed off after that idiot owner Tom Hicks made the steroid allegations against him. That basically made him disappear entirely from the public eye. He did not show up to his Rangers HOF induction in 2015, or any other time he was honored like the GLP All-Time team after the last game there in 2019. Not until September 2023 did he finally make an appearance to formally receive his Rangers HOF jacket. Perhaps whatever good fortune led to that reconciliation was good karma for the team that year.
Albert Belle deserved those MVPs anyway.
Griffey or A-Rod should have won the year he won his first award. They both had double the WAR as Jaun and Albert.
Albert definitely should have won his 50/50 doubles and homers year but the press and him never got along.
@@henrywallacesghost5883I actually don’t look at WAR when I look at the value of a player.
Juan gone flat out mashed!!!! All the puny little girly men crying about steroids when more than half the league was probably on them. Even the pitchers
Was one of my favs. Always wanted him with the Orioles
"George Steinbrenner better check the deed, because right now it is Juan Gonzalez who owns the Yankees."
Juan drove in so many runs I've never seen anyone do that before or since. In two seasons he had more RBIs than games played.
Saying the Dallas Fort Worth area is a small market is wild lol
He was not a swinger, he was just guy that twirled his bat through the zone. I have never seen a “swing” like his. He hit so many wall scrapers for being juiced beast
Incredible hitter! Dude could hit any pitch in any location very, very hard.
Palmeiro was one of my favorite players, but he dropped dirty after defiantly telling congress he didn’t take steroids. Juando never did. Either lie, or fail a drug test.
"Ee-gor" not "eye-gor"
Stole more mvps then bases in 1996
❤ he was amazing an id take him in right or dh anyday
Or left in my park but still
He had 2.
He didn't steal anything. Steroids were not banned by the league during those MVP seasons.
@@henrywallacesghost5883yeah and he still didn’t deserve those mvps
@@RSndlrCBGYeah there were so many candidates in 1996 and 1998, truth is there wasn’t really one player who deserved it those years. Albert Belle should have had MVP in 1998 although he finished 9th and maybe Ken Griffey jr. deserved the award in 1996 but Juan Gonzalez was not a bad choice.. 144 RBIs in 134 games..
"Are you buying a house in Detroit?"
"No! Apartment... Apartment."
He was none too popular during his Detroit stint, numbers really suffered that year (granted Commerica is a big park)
I loved Gonzo back in the day. what a player.
Roger Maris and Dale Murphy also have 2 MVPs each. Murph is the only one who has a legit shot at the Hall of Fame.
Forgotten? I was a rangers fan in the 90s wouldn't forget him
Yup I forgot about him. Thanks for reminding me.
Should never went to Detroit
I remember him very well.
❤😊 it saved baseball for better or worse
Rafael Pameiroid disappeared after his career ended.
his 96 mvp is a fucking mystery, over griffey and a rod
i know they didnt use WAR back then but 3.8 vs 9+ GTFO
Who is this Gonazalez fellow?
He definitely used
Yup…guys in the league used to laugh about how obvious he and Julio Franco were in those days
Interesting.
Was a great hitter
Igor is pronounced ….. Eeeeegor.
Maybe if his teammates weren’t, canseco, palmeiro, and pudge. All juicers
Fractured a ligament? 😅
Poor mans manny
I remember him arriving to one particular spring training so juiced he couldn't hold a bat with two hands his chest was so thick. 😂
Stole MVPs from Belle and Griffey in respective years
Proof steroids help
Puerto Rico is not a country, it's a US territory. Other than that, good video.
braindead pedantic comment. no one considers it a part of the US, its another country de facto
@@cococock2418Still better than calling it a floating pile of garbage either way😂
@@cococock2418can't except much from somebody with a username like that
@@cococock2418and that’s the problem. You put feelings in front of fact
@@cococock2418
Puerto Rico is whatever we SAY it is, you little pissant.
Senor Octobre
Uuuhhhh, you can’t fracture a ligament. It’s soft tissue, it tears and sprains. 🤷🏾♂️😂🤣
The epitome of a stat first selfish player. Definitely not a team player. There’s a reason people have forgotten about him.
A quitter & thief in Detroit.
He has BETTER STATS than Dave " the joke" Parker. HOF IS A JOKE. DAVE PARKER??? GTFOH
Bro dave was a superstar in the 70s and 80s he was an mvp and got 2 rings he definetly a HOFer
@gringobronx7670 Barely 1800hits. 330 HR'S??? THAT'S YOUR HOF??? GTFOH 😆 🤣
@routeirish2503 bro parker got over 2,712 hits what are you talking about, you just proved to yourself that you know nothing about Dave Parker
@gringobronx7670 YOU ARE SMOKING CRACK. LOOK IT UP. BILL BUCKNER HAD OVER 2800 HITS. NOT FATBOY PARKER. LOL
Bum😢😢😢😢
