      me too, 1200 blu-rays, 110 4k and 100 HD DVD (I know haha). That's a LOT of hard drive space, and what about backing all that up? Don't want to have to rip everything again. I do have all my titles ripped, but transcoded to mp4 to save space. I use them on tablets and flash drives when traveling. I do have everything backed up to 2nd drive. If I kept every thing 1:1 rip i would need dozens of TBs of space. When I want the best experience in my theater I simply use the original disc.

    Fantastic video! I learnt some of these lessons the hard way when ripping my DVDs and Blu rays about 600 of them two or three years ago. I stopped at 4k UHD because I only had one disc, Dunkirk, and at the time you had to have the right UHD drive plus know a guy that could give you a code for each particular movie and I wasn't prepared to deal with that nonsense. Now I've got about 25 UHD's I might get back into it. Plus I'm jealous of that 3D Oled TV, absolutely love the 3D format. With 3d rips for Plex it does work however it's more hassle than its worth with the menus being all screwed up and the tv not auto recognising 3d content from Plex, so I just avoid guess that's another plus point to the premium Zappitti player.

    I found Billy (great guy) and was able to have my ASUS drive’s firmware flashed remotely.
    I was able to use MakeMV to rip my purchased UHD disc to my personal hard drive flawlessly.
    The question I have is related to ripping the disc as a BDMV as you did in this video.
    I only see the option for outputting the file a .mkv.
    How do I rip as .iso or BDMV using only MakeMKV?
    Thanks so much for your content, you are THE MAN!

I used to use imgburn(Mac) and anydvd(win) and it seemed to work well. Do you still have to hunt through fake playlists w/4k? Would like to just go iso/1:1 and stream my files w/DV & atmos support.

    • @alexcoluzzi
      @alexcoluzzi Год назад

      When this generation of drives we're using was first released all 2016 and 2017 models were shipped with firmware that exposed the "backdoor" that is used to bypass copy protection and thus did not have to be "flashed".
      Sometime in 2018 they released firmware that closed this loophole and thus the flashing did begin.
      Being somewhat of a purist myself back then I made it mission to track down as many "factory original" (drives with the "backdoor" firmware installed) drives still in existence and for sale.
      Thanks to stores like Fry's Electronics who pride themselves on stocking last year's and the year's before builds of components I cleaned up lol. I was able to find and liberate around 850 factory original drives but eventually I too had to start flashing drives.
      It was cool while it lasted. A total nerd scavenger hunt as I either visited or called every fry's location in the country and had them scour their stores looking for the magical date codes on every single ASUS and LG blu ray drive they had in stock. They were always more than happy to send as many as I wanted from all across the country, store to store inventory transfer in one of their fleet of Fry's trucks. Destination Palo Alto store 3. R.I.P. Fry's Electronics!

If I choose for example in Stargate Atlantis and Grimm to rip also the forced subtitles, then at playback it doesn't show any subtitles regardless that in the list I could choose even 2 english subtitle track. I suppose this is because it probably doesn't have any forced subtitle at all on the original disc? @@carminedepaola8018 Tough to say... OLED inherently degrades over time and is ever as bright as the first day it was bought and used. Despite that, and the lack of Dolby Vision support at frame rates above 30 fps, you have a great integrated sound bar and 3D support along with OLED just being a great viewing experience in general. Not sure if LG's White Glove will still be available for a display that is 4 / 5 years old now but that was something I always brought up to folks looking at the G6 over the E6, C6, & B6 models at that time. If you found the right buyer you could probably still make anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 or so on the lower end. I certainly doubt you'd be able to get back up to original retail value sadly though.

      @@farouttech4275 No, not at all. LG's older OLED models all used the same organic display layer. They would all inherently degrade the same over time. However, the larger the display, the quicker you'd begin to notice that change, slow as that change might be over time and use. Now that LG's 2021 OLEDs are splitting their models between a base organic display layer and an organic EVO Display layer on the higher models it will be interesting to watch if there is a difference in the levels of fading degradation between the models. Though there are now rumors circulating that all of the LG's 2021 models have the same EVO panel but that the system on a chip that runs each model level of LG's 2021 OLEDs has different instructions on how to use the new panel or even just treat it as a normal panel.

      You mean on PC? better to get and use a UHD Bluray player that supports Bluray 3D and is Universal plays all region you can play normal Blurays and UHD Blurays if you rip them or use Cyberlink PowerDVD software, technically it should support Bluray 3D as well but whether it can actually play 3D is down to your graphics card, video interface you're using and drivers. In most cases you can't play on pc these days unless you rip to mkv and play using something like Virtual Desktop and a compatible SteamVR/PCVR Headset. So no sharing with others. I mean if you're using SBS for example you may be able to select 3D on the remote or menu for your intended 3D display and that way you can use 3D but .srt subtitle files will probably be messed up and you'll probably have to burn in eg. Foreign language subtitles manually or when you rip, multiplex or Hanbreak (Transcode) but the positioning (and maybe timing) of them could still be an issue if you don't know what you're doing or just having trouble.

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  3 года назад

      That just happened in mid October is what I’m finding out. Too bad there’s transcoding involved in Plex as that inherently degrades the quality. I will check which way it sends Dolby Atmos, because I do have a hunch, and if I’m right, then You’re better off buying from Vudu and using the app instead of spending all the time to rip movies at 1:1 and then compress it to be sent to your TV.

    • @BlownMacTruck
      @BlownMacTruck 3 года назад +1

      @@TechnoDad There’s no transcoding and up until a week ago they highly encouraged you to disable any transcoding due to horrendous HDR tone mapping when doing so (the latest version fixes this). The MKV specs pulled in Dolby Vision profile 7 / dual layer back at the beginning of the year. MakeMKV supported ripping into that format a few months ago. Plex has supported dual layer (the proper way to do DV on a rip) since a roughly a month ago. Any device that Plex runs on that supports profile 7 runs without transcoding (the Shield for example).

    Hey Techno Dad! I'm not sure I understand correctly. If I rip my Blu-rays and 4K Blu-ray to an M2TS Passthrough file, it doesn't keep the Dolby Vision AND/OR HDR10+ layers in it (because some 4k Blu-ray comes with both formats i.e: Hobbs & Shaw)? Does it keep the chapters too so I can skip through the movie or is that only available with a BDMV folder? Thank you for your informations!

Also, how I have a big Hi-End AV 4K System here, I want have the same result when I use my Oppo player to run these discs.

    Sorry for long history here, but your experience will help me to get a better solution, why I have many doubts...
    And last one, I saw the Zappiti NAS video and I am analysing it also ordering one, but my first question here come to find the solution because today I have a Synology NAS and how I will change ti to a new big one, maybe could be a good choice to get a Zappitti NAS (or not by the price !!!!), Or just make a upgrade on my NAS and use these DVDFab + BluRayFab + MakeMKV running on my desktop and put it all on NAS by network (I have a excellent network here).
    What should it be your choice?

I'm still not quite sure what external UHD drive to buy (don't think I can fit an internal one in my PC) and since it's been awhile since you posted this video, is there any new advice you could provide? I can't seem to get ahold of Alex at the email address you provided. Thanks for your help!

      Hi Kathleen! I spoke to Alex and his email is active and working. There are instructions online for how to flash your own drive, but I have not tried it.
