Every time I watch one of your videos, I feel like I should make my own about my plantings/productivity this year, which is coming along great guns thanks to you and your advice/reminders/ideas! I also want to encourage you on the avocado - don't lose hope too soon! A couple of fruit this year is likely to mean a lot next year or the year after. The first year my avo fruited (after at least five years, maybe more: I was starting to despair like you), I also only got three or four of them. But the next year I had a dozen, and this last year I've been eating avos slow-and-steady all through winter because there's so many (and you can leave them on the tree to ripen). Now that the next crop of avos is pollinating, I'm thinking I need to start harvesting the last few. Anyway, good going with all the crops; I love seeing what you're doing, although I'm still amazed at how many chooks you're keeping in such a small area!
Thanks for the advice on the avacado. I might hang onto it but it is getting pretty big and I keep pruning it back to keep it manageable. I do let the chooks out but under a watchful eye or they get into the garden!
Great harvest Anthony. I can see how proud you are by the smile on your face. I've started to harvest my first crop of carrots this week and their looking good. I also had a great crop of onions that I harvested this week also, 37 which is my best result ever. Funny thing the last few years I have also had trouble with my first crop of cucumbers as well. My seedlings looked pretty much the same as yours. I replaced them with a punnet from Flower Power and the new ones I planted out yesterday look good. Cheers 😀
Thanks mate yeah dad planted out the same seedlings as mine I had grown them for him as well they looked fine and are vining I guess I needed to be there to monitor daily. I’m going to direct seed some cucumbers this weekend
It's always fabulous to see the evolution of your garden Anthony and I absolutely love watching your videos. I too harvested some broccoli today as well as some of my asparagus and home grown vegetables are just so superior to store bought.ones. Haven't even thought about planting tomatoes yet down here in the southern highlands. I'm going to experiment with planting lots of other things directly rather than raise seedings so wish me luck! Have done a huge job to increase the size of the veg patch this year and fenced it off against rabbits on my 3 acre property - they're a real problem but I live with them. Looking forward to more planting now that the last frost has gone. Thanks for your videos - they're a real inspiration.
Thanks for the support Warren. Great to have some Acreage to grow lots of crops. Stopping the rabbits would be a nightmare mate hope you get on top of them
Very helpful to see where a fellow nsw gardener is doing. I'm in southern highlands so we are about 5-9° colder so a bit behind you. My cucumbers have transplanted quite well considering the fluctuations in temp and still being quite cold. 🤔 thanks for the videos Anthony.
So jealous, followed your planting program, from July. All my seed growing was successful. Lost my first tomatoes and beans to frost. Replanted all my seeds. we are about six weeks behind your suburb. Everything is growing fine now. Thank you for your videos.
Hope the gardening goes well for you I’m looking at making a weekly short video that lets you know what I have done in the last week and what I am doing this week so you can almost follow me if real time 👍
All looking good. Here in Adelaide we are still getting 3 degree mornings so my garden is way behind yours. Thursday we even had a light frost. Next week we have some showers forecast and some warmer nights so hopefully things will get moving. I grow great lakes lettuce all year round which gives me some great greens during summer.
I’m going to try growing lettuce all year this year also really struggle with them in summer but I have been given suggestions of summer varieties that I’m going to try and see how they go
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 I grow mine in tubs around the side of the house in summer. That way they don't get the heat of the day because the sun is gone from that part of the house after 1.30.
I’m in subtropical south east Gold Coast. I cut my kale each year just below lowest leaves once the white cabbage mth appear. The regrow. I’ve had several kale plants for years now.
I appreciate your concern with the avo tree. My hass avocado tree is seven years old and I’ve had less than 7 avos. This year I planted lavender at the base of the tree and I noticed increased visits of bees from the lavender to the avocado tree. I’m seeing lots of baby avos and I’m hoping for my first bumper crop!
Yeah I might give that a go. I find my biggest issue is the big winds we always have in August and September here in Sydney that knock off all the flowers and fruit it always happens at the wrong time
Hello Anthony amazing garden I learnt so much from you on what and when to plant and your use of fertiliser. Thank you. I am interested on how you use all this fresh produce, some cooking videos from your wife and your mother would complete the story from seed to grow to harvest to table. It would be so good to share such a journey of food, for example the silverbeet wraps or pies I'm so interested they sound so good. You will have a series on sbs food channel haha I would watch it. Again thank you for all I've learned so far. Also from Sydney.
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612I feel there's so much old school knowledge in your family things to share and not be lost. Thank you Anthony we wait eagerly haha.
Avocadoes apparently need another avo tree to fruit. An A and a B type. I don't know if you can identify what type of Avo it is. And yes, apparently trees grown from seed take many years to fruit. I looked into the best type for Sydney and it was 'Bacon' and 'Wurtz'.
Hi Anthony, your patch is looking so good I can almost taste the cabbage and silver beet. When I get back after being away half my garden is dead so a big shout out to your Dad and cousin. Jacqu
Regarding your avocado tree - generally you need more than one tree to get decent fruit set. A+A / B+B combinations work, but for maximum fruit set you want an A and a B type. My 2 cents worth - I wouldn't cut down that tree, even if it's unproductive. It's difficult to get grafted avocado trees established - much harder than your seed grown tree. They're really prone to root problems. If you can get access to another mature tree (or a couple of varieties) for scion wood, then you're better off grafting to your established tree. You'll get results much sooner and with a lot less risk of a new grafted tree dying. I cut down my two seed-grown trees as they were unproductive (admittedly only 5 years old) and since then I've failed to get grafted avocados to grow in their place. I wish I'd taken the grafting approach knowing what I know now.
Yeah I might do that this year I’m thinking I might graft a section of it with some other avacado. Do you know when the best time is to graft them? They don’t have a dormant time so I’m thinking may?
@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Same issue. We have just purchased a grafted avocado plant to help pollinate the existing tree. Would be an interesting video topic if you were to graft to your existing tree
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Generally you want to graft when the sap is flowing. Early/mid spring is when I do my grafts (I've tried Citrus and Mangoes so far). Once you get into summer I find it's too hot and there's more risk of the scion drying out. I expect May would be too late - it's getting cold and the sap slows down which increases the chance of the graft failing. Not to mention the potential for frost in the following weeks.
Amazing harvest Anthony! Those cabbages look so good! Do you have any tips for growing carrots? Mine have been in a grow bag for months and just not putting on any size! I hope you had a lovely holiday too! 🙂
The only tip I have is probably give them enough space to grow and keep the water up to them. Not a big root vegetable grower so it’s a bit of trial and error at my end
grafted avocado is the way to go. get the most dwarf variety you can. Mine is Wurtz dwarf and still takes up substantial space and i just cut the top as was growing too high. ideally grow a compatible pollinator in a pot. they really need cross-pollination to fruit well. most of the other avocado trees grow quite massive, and i think pollarding them regularly to keep big trees small doesnt work out well. i think cucumbers need more warmer weather than zucchini, despite advice otherwise. cheers, good show.
Yeah I’m looking at options at the moment might try my hand at grafting the tree to see how they go. I’m going to direct seed cucumbers this weekend should germinate well now
Yeah it’s a pain especially with expensive seed. Funny though checked on the cucumber seedlings I raised for dad and he planted them out at the same time they are doing really well starting to vine up so it’s a hit and miss really
Really depends on the weather generally I will water them every day especially if it is warm and will add some shade if needed I will put the irrigation on them after a week and then they get watered every day on a 10 minute timer
Beautiful garden... still cold down here in Melbourne 😢 so no way have we planted tomatoes yet because soil still cold. Surprised you don't use mulch??? That'd control weeds a bit. Cheers, vince
Thanks mate I stay away from mulch generally as I plant closer spacings and the weeds are usually shaded out once the canopy grows I do use some manures as a mulching system that I put on the top
I will post a link to my pruning videos. Essentially I prune all the side shoots and I leave the side shoot that’s just below the first cluster of flowers that I grow out as my second leader and then as the plant grows I then nominate another 2 side shoots at least to grow out. As the plants get bigger I generally am not to precious about removing all the side shoots
I used it in my previous video to deal with sluggish tomatoes that were yellowing. It works on cucumbers as well though you need to get to them early before the damage is done it adds magnesium and help with the uptake of nutrients
Your a regular backyard supermarket aren't you?? Now if only we can grow butter...cheese...milk and bread!! LOL!! OMG @ your Silverbeet!! I'm going to have to add steroids to mine to beat yours!! LOL!!
I can't believe the growth of the tomatoes in ten days!! Amazing. Mine have pulled through after the hot wind battering, but not quite as big and bushy as yours yet. The garden is looking absolutely fab. Nothing better to look at than a well tended veg garden. ❤️❤️
Yeah as soon as the weather warms up the tomatoes really shoot forward. I have given them a prune now and they are looking good but might let them grow out a bit more before the next pruning session
