    Thanks again Anthony for another really helpful video. I guess I'm sowing ccapsicums this week then, in the Melbourne frozen wastelands 🤣

      My neighbour is an avid gardener but still likes to have some lawn so hers is a little smaller. But she tells me I spend a lot of time in the patch 😀

    New to your channel, your garden is amazing and loving seeing gardening in a Sydney context. It’s great to see your garden planning and seed starting processes. I plan on following allow and hopefully have some better garden success!

    Hey Anthony, I recommend something like coffee chaff (it's the husks of the roasted coffee bean) as an 'entry mat' for the chooks to the nesting space. You can get them from a local roaster by the boxful (given how us Sydneysiders go through coffee), and they're light and fluffy and smell of caramel, and will brush some of the dirt off the chook feet and cushions the eggs. They may stick a little to the eggs, but it's not dirty!

      Yeah my local cafe roasts their own beans and I have gotten husks in the past. Might have to give this a go 👍

    Great update as always. Those wombok are looking really good given the cooler weather and low light!
    I planted my chilli and capsicum seeds last weekend. Wishing you success with the germination of yours too.

    Hi Anthony, another informative video. I've also had a great season with brassicas. My second crop of broccoli is at about the same stage as yours. This weekend I'm starting to plant out my spring flower garden with 150 snapdragons around the rose bed and I've also got 60 stock seedlings all grown from seed the same way I do my vegies. So spring is not far away. Have a good weekend. Looks like we're getting more rain next week. Cheers

      @sydneybackyardveggies9612  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I saw that forecast. I haven’t had to water the garden in the last month. Don’t mind the rain as long as it isn’t pelting rain over a short period it floods the patch. Need to learn how to grow flowers it is not my strong point. It would look amazing once they all bloom in spring

      @@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Yes looks fantastic. I use mostly the same principles with flowers as with vegies. A little more phosphorous and a little less nitrogen. Marigold seed sown in spring and planted in the vegie garden especially around tomatoes and capsicum help deter fruit fly as they don't like the smell and brighten the garden up. Cheers

    Great video Anthony. I never thought about starting spring/summer veggies so early but it’s a great idea to get a harvest in before the pests arrive with the heat like they do here in Brisbane. I’ll also be getting some powerfeed today from Bunnings to give my broccoli a feed as they are at the same stage as yours are! Thanks for the info! 🙂

      Yeah with brissy I would go a month earlier than me you have very mild winters so you could do well to plant your spring veggies in start August.

    Hi Anthony, your cabbages look amazing and hopefully eggs wont go up much in price. Personally I never want chooks in my yard because when I was a kid mum had them and those birds made such a mess of our backyard. Perhaps if we end up in a great depression I would consider having a few chookies. 🐓🐣🐓

      Chickens are great. I generally keep them locked up so they don’t dirty the yard but I get a lot of compost material from them and they eat all my garden waste. Win win

    good info once again. i'm trying a new seed company that havent tried before, and see how they go. holding off on planting seeds for now. i dont want my big cell trays inside, so have heatmat and lights in gardenshed. winter sun is unreliable here in melb, and you need the room with the perfect place for the cell trays. actually just bought another light, this time a less powerful but long light this time, a spider farmer sf300.

      @sydneybackyardveggies9612  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah in Melbourne I would wait at least a month after what I do in Sydney it stayed pretty cold really late last year. Can you share where you got your heat mat from? The ones I see are really expensive. And always looking for new seed companies too. Found a good one for commercial cucumber seeds that I will share in my next video

    Great video thanks for sharing , those cabbages look amazing im in Sydney as well and find it really challenging to germinate summer seeds during winter cause my house is very cold during the early morning hours i only run the heater on for a few hours each night so maybe heat mat is the solution not sure.
    In your opinion when is the best time to plant cucumber seeds

    • @sydneybackyardveggies9612
      @sydneybackyardveggies9612  3 месяца назад

      Hi mate you will find that most seedlings except for capsicums and chillies will germinate now indoors here in Sydney. Capsicums will need a heat mat till next month ideally if your house isn’t heated. I have just started my cucumber seedlings now it’s still too cold to plant them out in the soil as seeds now they won’t germinate. If you want to plant them direct in the soil in my experience I would plant them out last week of September. I prefer to get an early start on my veggies so I will be planting out the seedlings in 3 weeks

    The vermiculite on top of the seed cells helps with damping off i have read. The egg plant and capsicums you have started, are you going to start more successions as the year rolls on?

    • @sydneybackyardveggies9612
      @sydneybackyardveggies9612  5 месяцев назад +1

      With eggplant I won’t but I’m tossing up whether I will with the capsicums. I will pull out the first planting in December and I’m thinking I might plant a second round in December also and see if I can get a late season harvest which is fruit fly free

      @sydneybackyardveggies9612  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi Jason. When the seedlings germinate I water from below I fill up the blue tray with water and the punnet soaks in the water for about 15 minutes. I also apply liquid fertilisier this way also but make sure it is a weak solution
