My mother went to High School with him and I had a chance to meet him years ago when I just started guitar and I was very young. I only had heard his name as something of legend- never listened to his music. It was a brief encounter with my family who had purchased his father's art. Looking back- super weird to have six strangers surrounding his bed for a couple minutes, mostly asking inane questions.
But damn... if I could do that again... I wouldn't stop asking questions.

I disagree. Great player and writer, but let’s be honest, half of the reason he’s so hyped up now is because of the tragedy aspect. This ALWAYS happens with musicians. If you die (or in this case become as physically debilitated as possible without dying) young, you automatically leave a legacy about you being “one of the greatest of all time.” Hell, this is why Hendrix is considered the greatest of all time-he was ground zero for the “celebrity musician dying before his time.” Great and important player, sure, but if he had survived into old age he wouldn’t be as revered. Probably still a top five player in every list, but not Number 1 on every list ever made the way he is.
@@sigiligus this is a case very different to those u talk about. Jason was only 18 when he composed and played this song. I've been playing guitar for 20 years and can barely sweep pick let alone write something like this.
He was diagnosed with ALS while recording with David Lee Roth for A Lil' Ain't Enough after being hired by Roth to be the guitarist in his band after Steve Vai left to pursue a solo career. Jason finished recording his parts for the band while suffering a bit from the condition and was unable to tour in support of the album he helped write.
Absolutely remember that! I remember hearing the news he was going to be David's guitar player and felt as though David's band just might have a chance lol. Unfortunately, I also remember hearing the tragic news of an illness that was going to prevent him from touring. I just didn't know or understand the severity of it. I did realize later that another Hero of mine would have such a story that changed my outlook on life as well. His name is Bobby Jones #golfer. If you ever can take a deeper dive into his life, it is very inspiring. I am quite impressed you remember such an important detail about Jason Becker. Pretty Awesome! Thanks for the reminder.

Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, David T. Chastain, Joey Tafolla Marty Friedman & Jason Becker in Cacophony - those were The Shrapnel Years and I bought every record and they are all classics now - I was totally blown away and it hit my heart and soul forever ❤
A friend of mine, who was a guitarist at that time, used to get samplers from Shrapnel and we just couldn't believe the talent that was in that stable. Jason is incredible. Triumphant Hearts, his latest solo album is an absolute piece of art. I was proud to help crowdfund a masterpiece.
You can tell he appreciated the gravitas of the song. I think some people just listen to music, and might even listen to that song and think "cool, wow he can play good!" and move on with their lives.
But when he said "I could listen to it 100 more times and still not begin to grasp the enormity of it" that's when you know he immediately understands just how great Jason was.
Jason is not like other players or musicians. He's not like other people. He's great on a level very few can begin to comprehend. He's probably the greatest guitar player of all time and this song alone is such a pure expression of his greatness that all you can really do when you realize it, is just sit there in stunned silence.
I’ve heard this song a million times and it never ceases to amaze me. Truly one of the greatest talents of our time.

Great track by a great musician... I remember being very sad when I read about his condition then. Listened to this track many times, played some of it when I was a teenager. Still an inspiration.
Your reaction is so pure, it vividly summarizes what jason becker milks out of your emotions which other guitarists fail to do, mainly because jason is coming from such an innocent and pure place due to his inexperienced age which is beautifully unadulterated yet carries the complexity that throws you off your comfort zone. What makes this even more great is the age when Jason created this epic song. That creativeness is on another level man. You can hear some classical influenses there for sure.
Jason Becker is the Paganini of the electric guitar. A true genius with unmatched skills.
Not really. In historical context, Paganini was amazing not just for his sheer technical ability, but for pushing the boundaries and changing what people thought the instrument was capable of as well as how music could be written. Becker wrote great music and played amazingly well, but his writing is just 200+ year old music adapted to modernity and his technique while spectacular was not uniquely spectacular in the same decade that 90% of shred gods hailed from.

Every note Jason plays means something, Almost all other shredders have so much noodling and pointless notes there just for the sake of playing fast and playing lots of notes.
Jason's stuff is real prodigy composition. Just listen to the vibrato and the detail around every note played. It's impossible to copy. Marty is a close 2nd.
Oh, and after listening to this song just consider the fact that he laid it down beginning to end as a single recording, and did it with the rhythm, and did it with the multiple harmonies over those insane runs. No pro tools. None of that. Just pure insane ability and feeling front to back.
No one has ever gotten close to Jason. It's so much more than fast notes. It's genius and prodigy.
I often think about what happened to him with ALS.... it's like he was too good, and God struck him down. The universe couldn't handle it. It kills me and I hate to think about what could have been. But on the other hand, his story and what he's done, how he's persevered, and what he's written and created, and how he's inspired countless people in these last 30 years.... I feel like all that is just so powerful, just so much more powerful even more so than his unmatched playing. I know there are countless people who have gotten so much motivation and so much of all the intangibles from Jason. I know I have.
He's why I started playing guitar, and there have been countless moments where I've been struggling and so beaten down and unable to imagine going on....but then I put his music on and look at him, and I realize my problems ain't shit.
He's saved my life and given me meaning more times than I can count.
Get your buddy to listen to Triumphant Hearts and Perspective albums!! Both written by Jason using only his eyes!!!

Very few have ever been able to even come close trying to play his stuff. Jeff Loomis is the only one who ever played his music perfectly note for note. Watch is hands and you will see just how hard Jason`s talent really was. Look up Jeff Loomis Perpetual burn. Watch that and see what super human guitar playing really looks like. You guys should do Once Upon a Melody frm Triumphant Hearts to get an example of how his compositions sound when he is combining his early guitar work with how he composes music now.
Additionally, after Stephen Hawking passed, Jason is now the longest living survivor of ALS. 52+ years, I cannot comprehend that. Dude's a legend!

The greatest guitar player and composer of all time, he was actually only 17 when he wrote this masterpiece let that sink in. Nobody even to this day, at a much older age can play that cleanly with that vibrato and passion, nobody. It is why the likes of Steve Vai hold him in so much regard. Just imagine how good he would have been if ALS hadn't cruely robbed him of his playing.

Then progress to guys like Joe Stump, David Valdes and my personal favorite modern guitar god Andy James. Thank me later. But also be aware that rock god guitarists like Neal Schon and Steve Morse have numerous all-instrumental guitar albums. And what about Andy Timmons, Neil Zaza, Joe Satriani, Blues Saraceno, Greg Howe, Gary Hoey et al... There are hundreds of outstanding instrumental guitar releases of countless styles and genres out there. Open your ears. I've been an instrumental guitar afficionado since the early 80s.🎸

This would be very hard to replicate on keyboards. The only man who ever took the realm of music beyond the common understanding. He was a GOD and for that he was struck down with ALS. The higher realms were not amused! The devil could not risk this guy cutting heads with his best!

The only possible reaction possible when hearing Altitudes for the first time is to shred some tears.. period.
I remember that song from a compilation back in the day. I'm not much of a fan of so called "guitar heroes" or "guitar gods", but that song somehow stuck in mind. He seems to be influenced by Yngwie Malmsteen (one of the few "guitar gods" I know or remember, the other two probably being Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher). Malmsteen was classically trained I believe, so you can hear some of that in Becker's music too. The part with the clear guitar is just beautiful. I didn't know about his sad story.
I think Jason Becker is rrally the peak of what neoclassical metal can be. Yngwie malmsteem is good, but honestly I think Jason is much better. This album has stuck in my head ever sonce i first heard it becuse ive never heard another album that compares.

Hey Jason is still composing music and a few years ago put out an album that was played by amazing guitarists. The album is pretty good to I think the featured musicians do a great job of interpreting his music although it would have been real cool to hear how Jason would have played it.
If you enjoy Jason, you should listen to a much more classical style song from his album Perspective such as End Of The Beginning or Serrana.

I'd LOVE to see what he makes of Ego Death by Polyphia (Featuring Steve Vai)
Jason add libbed most of this in the studio. He had no written music. He just jammed and made most of it up off the top of his head. He says as much in interviews. He was a master of understanding of music theory. He wanted to do unheard ideas so he just went for it and played what he felt at any given second. Can you do that? Most can`t get close to playing like this with no written plan.
Jason Becker has never played an insignificant, misplaced or misarticulated note.
It is straight up shocking to think this amazing music was played and composed by someone so young.

Jason is a true guitar hero. todo un virtuoso!
Key boards are easy to learn. Guitar is far harder because you can bend notes and do things that can`t be done on keyboards. To say that you are great on keys means nothing. I play both. Guitar is the ultimate instrument. Take it up and try to learn it. You will have a whole new perspective once you do.
