Finally finished this up! Sorry to anyone who thought it was going to be longer; that'd be a blast some day, but this got it out of my system for now :)
Solid mix of hand animated stuff, physics sims, and data from a Rokoko mocap suit (learned a ton about IK rigging, too, to mix it all up)!
Music by Wilbert Roget II

An effects shot that cost 10 million in 1999 is now being done by a single guy in his house with a free piece of software.
With decades of experience and dedication. Definitely a bit of savantism there also. This shot must include assets from several years and at least months or years of work.
TBF Ian is not a single guy it's a mysteriously powerful entity.

But considering the time put into it and skills required I would still price it at 100k at least.

Anyone ever notice how sci-fi sports (especially racing) is always really deadly/needlessly dangerous
I've done a language analysis on 10,000 scifi and fantasy books to define the personality type of the average scifi/fantasy writer (and the characters). The personalities score very low on cheerfulness, adventurousness, excitement-seeking, activity level and achievement striving and they score very high on cautiousness, depression, intellect, sympathy, altruism, liberalism and imagination. Perhaps, in imagining these dangerous sports, they are fantasizing about the negative space in their own character. Glorifying experiences they may never have. Pretty much like virgins putting pussy on a pedistule. Of course, I'm not suggesting anything about the author of this video. Now, violent scifi sports is just a cliché.

"I've done a language analysis on 10,000 sci-fi and fantasy books..."
And yet, even after an edit, you couldn't spell "pedestal" correctly.
Also, did you personally read those 10,000 books? Because I have to say, that would be an impressive feat. The average person, reading 6 hours per day, can only manage about 200 books in a year. 10,000 books would take about 50 years to get through. Of course you're above average aren't you? You probably manage 250 books in a year, so 10,000 would only take you 40 years. So you're what, 60 years old, and spent your entire life reading sci-fi/fantasy books, so that you could insult someone on the internet?
"Come get your exploded vegetables!" from the popcorn stand was the best thing.

The visual effects and 3D modelling/animation being spectacular is a given. But can we take a moment to appreciate the sound effects and sound design that went into this? You can hear every little interaction, particle, little banter, machinery, etc. Fantastic work, Ian!!
Exactly!! Jeez the sound design in every one of his videos is top notch!! It adds such a lot to the atmosphere. Ian talked about this in his art cafe podcast.

I want to see a full fledged version of this, with a story. It's such a great concept and so well done
In case you haven't seen it. Alita: Battle Angel comes very close to this. I would say Ian took equal part inspirations from the Star Wars Pod racing as well as Alita's Motorball sports.
It basically is a pod race in the motorball stadium. The design of the world and its environmental storytelling is very close too. You could mash both worlds together and they would fit perfectly.
@@RyoMassaki I've always wanted to watch it, now I will!
@@michaelgalin7373 I have to say though, the motorball sport is only a part of the story, its not really about it, but it plays a big role for some of the characters. Sadly there are not enough scenes of it actually playing out, but the scenes that are there are absolutely breathtaking. Worth watching the whole movie for.
Hmm, as soon as I saw the thumbnail I thought "My god! Someone has finally done an update on Rocket Ball 🎱!!".

Wow, subbed.
Just knowing Ian most likely tried to make regular cereal, couldn't figure out why he couldn't get the physics sim to stop jittering, and just decided to make a gag out of it is what makes this video so great.
(Oh yeah, and also the spectacular animation and rendering. That too)
Lmao the way you’re right about this is hillarious. The physics sim couldn’t handle anything smaller than a centimeter 😂

Lampshading the physics simulation shenanigans is a real power move xD
i had to watch twice before i realized that was just normal rigidbody simulation bullshittery that he seamlessly transformed into a normal tangible thing
And actually is very easy to fix: just get the baked position from one frame and remove the physics, fixing them in place.
Oh god the Hyper-O's bit had me dying of laughter, literally EVERY time I try to do a physics sim I get that jitter effect

There is something about it that feels different than other CG Sci-fi scenes. Something reminiscent of anime, it's like I was watching anime and it was beautiful. That's the only way I can describe it.
The fine details, the animation, the shading, all beautiful.
It's basically Alita's Motorball except that instead of wearing lame-ass rollerskates everybody rides jet engines.
watch Red line
You're completely right. Its a mix of the fact that Ian self professed he can't do character animations (0:39 lmao look at them in the background), and that his slap-dash style of "looks great unless you're actually looking closely" gives the same feeling as a very messy hand drawn sketch that just happens to be rendered beautifully in production quality CGI.
Anime renderings have a similar ethos of putting high effort on the focus, and minimal effort on the bits that don't matter as much. They usually resolve to flat spaces and simple patterns though, while Ian fills it with a mess that looks perfect... if you squint a bit.
I would say his framing, editing, sense of movement and style has a similar energy than many animes. He has a great flow in all of these aspects even though it appears as chaotic - it's really well choreographed and crafted with a keen eye for details.

It's really difficult, but my retirement life has become fun. I would like to express my gratitude to you for helping me learn Blender. Thank sooo much!

Yeah it's so funny to me that people held that mentality for so long. It's just not true. Blender is probably one of the only 3D/animation programs that properly updates their tools. Can't say the same for all of Autodesk's bullshit. I still use Maya, but I'm trying to make the switch because I just can't stand to support Autodesk any longer.

How modern blockbusters don't look as polished or of such pristine quality never ceases to amaze me. Superb job!
Dear god, I love this so much! People in the comments are mentioning podracing, which is a fun homage, but what I love the most is the design. The grunge and the utility and the naturalness of it - it reminds me of everything I love about the classic 80's cyberpunk films. Blade Runner, Judge Dredd, Total recall. Like that popcorn machine - it had a lot spiritually in common with the taxi drivers in Total Recall. It felt like this practical commercial branded product that had experienced a hard life and been kicked around in society for a while. Like the feeling you get in an old bus station or a seedy old arcade or bowling alley. That vibe. I LOVE it!
This gives me Alita: Battle Angel vibes (the motorball sport scene). Very nice!
This looks better. Alita looked way too clean.
