I know a lot of people are looking forward to this set since those original Mirage turtles NECA did 15 years ago are stupidly expensive now. Happy to see it looks like their patience will be rewarded. Aside from the shoulders, the only bummer appears to be the continued lack of vertical wrist hinges. NECA used to be good about including those for at least Leonardo and Raph, I don't know what happened.

These are Mirage Turtles, there are plenty of TMNT figures with colored headbands out there!

That distinct Kevin Eastman artwork that has been prevalent for decades was nailed here. I REALLY want these, but fear they will sell out within seconds.
I thought these were by Lawson, who started drawing them more blocky.

These are based on Jim Lawson’s art from Return to NY.
@@ChrisRaftis The sculptor, Paul Harding, Jim Lawson himself and NECA have all said it's heavily based on the early Lawson artwork.
They could probably reuse this sculpt to finally give us the 2003 Turtles (the best Turtles)

Seeing the all-red bandanas would make me wonder how the 87 and 03 turtles would react if their Mirage counterparts were in-color with the same red bandanas rather than in black and white

I like color bandanas best, but IDW had them all red when the turtles were looking for Raph, which I enjoy.
I prefer the all red bandanas, Mirage Studios all day. 👍
If Neca's up for it, I can see them reusing and slightly remolding these Turtles to be the 2003 Turtles down the line. Fix the legs, change the head sculpts, alter the colors, and tweak the accessories.
The all red bandanas are kinda cool but the colors give a lot of personality to each characters
Trust me...their going to milk it and have a colored bandana set later on. They did it with the original Mirage turtles

@@mortcrimpjr i bought like 3 sets of the colored bandana ones years ago and still have them. Their the Best bootlegs ever made! The plastic is legit and not cheap and the paint as well is spot on. I wish Neca had explained something on that.. their one my favorite versions!
the mainline Mirage figures are not exclusive anywhere and NECA has been clear that these are going to be available through fanchannels and big box retail
only the AutoT Signature Editions (which are different than the Signature Editions with an autograph) were exclusive
Even tho I grew up with colored bandanas, I do have a soft spot for the red ones, mostly because I really enjoy the mirage turtles. Excellent review btw, as far as I’m aware the only thing neca has said is that it’ll be sold sometime this summer, so that’s vague.
This is what I've been waiting for, baby. We've gotten tons of Eastman/Laird Turtles but this is the first time we're finally getting the Lawson/Dooney Turtles.
I grew up reading the Mirage comics before any other turtle media so I prefer this look. Great review!
To answer your question of the day, I do like the All Red Turtle bandanas. I am glad you reviewed these, Anthony. I've seen these guys and wondered if I should get them. Me, I've had SEVERAL bad experiences with Neca figures. This look sooo well made which makes me want to buy them after you've given them such a good rating. I've mentioned before, you are one of the trustworthy reviewers on here. I believe as the hips loosen with time they will have a better range of movement for those dynamic kicks. I think in the same amount of time, the shoulders will move easily up and down, in that degree of range which will be okay, in my book. I like the Red because Raphael is my favorite turtle
The green looked better at the comic con figure display. It was more of a darker green and comic looking than what I can see here.
Cannot wait for these to be listed, other than the shoulders the articulation is much better than I anticipated for both these designs and a TMNT figure in general, and they look dead on to Lawson’s late 80’s/early 90’s artwork, so glad they did my favorite version justice
Personally, I like the all red versions over the color turtles. My reasoning being simply for the fact that they were more badass in the comics. The color versions became a bit more children friendly. The old school red turtles are rad 🤙
That's probably why Raphael is the best Turtle, at least in my opinion. Along with the red bandanna, he maintained a lot of the edge and aggression from the mirage days. ^^
I still prefer the colors tbh, it worked well in the tmnt 2003 show. I think the different colors give them more personality even if it has become more child friendly. Red everything is something I'd rather not have.
Meh I think the colored ones just look better, gives them more individuality.
What I would give for Neca to add butterfly joints to turtle figures

I'm definitely more of a fan of the individually colored masks. I really hope they re-release these with the different colors and in individual packages.
These are my absolute favorite turtles. I hope I can get them. Jim Lawson stories are my favorite, so different and mature, a lot of fantasy, adventure but also personal issues and grow on each turtle. Can't wait.

Yes, NECA listened to us last live stream when we asked them to send more review samples to Anthony's Customs. Probably not, but still happy you're getting more NECA's. These Turtles look awesome, The Mirage Turtle designs are super cool in my opinion, but I definitely prefer the colors for identification purposes.

These were some of my most wanted figures of the year wether the articulation was going to be decent or not but now that I know it’s good on them, I couldn’t wait before to get them but now I absolutely cannot wait 😂

So, these are said to be based on the artwork of Jim Lawson, who did the most Mirage TMNT issues of anybody aside from maybe Laird.
Where I expect that color reuse you're mentioning is in the Archie line. Jim Lawson also did 10% or so of the Archie run and essentially used the same body types. They'd have different belts with initials on the buckles (but no dangly bits like the cartoon or Playmates toys) and rounded eyes with pupils.
Jim Lawson also did the interior art for the Archie issue where they got their "intergalactic wrestling costumes". This is something NECA has teased for years. The intergalactic wrestling costumes were actually an unused set of designs by Eastman and Laird for if they'd stayed on the Mirage book longer without a break. Laird actually used Donatello's alt look in an obscure anthology story set in the future. These costumes are completely different for each turtle and Raph's black bodysuit continued to appear more often in the Archie comic. It might throw people as Larson didn't do the cover or the follow-up issues with these alt costumes but he did the interior art for their first published appearance.
They've never been done as toys in roughly 35 years.
Everyone keeps saying Lawson but Eastman worked with neca on these not Lawson.
@@TurtleC0mic No, these turtles are the Return to New York arc-style, which Jim Lawson drew. Outside of Eastman and Laird, he's probably the most prolific TMNT comic artist. I don't think Lawson worked with NECA on these, but I don't know if he even gets anything out of it as he was work-for-hire. Hopefully they gift him a set though.
@@MonsieurJimjams these looks nothing like Lawsons turtles. Lawson did the pencil work on the Ny story arc so I understand everyone’s confusion. If you wanna see a true Lawson style set of turtles plasticplayhouse did a set. Lawson does these weird edges. Kevin Eastman designed these with neca.

If I can get them, I likely will. But, I'd still really like another chance of getting the earlier designed Mirage Turtles. I wasn't collecting back then and missed out on them. The animated and movie Turtles are where I started. I like both the all red and the colors, but I knew the colors first, so that is my preference. :)
Awesome review as always. I personally won't ever get red masked tmnt figures because I wouldn't be able to tell them apart if any of their weapons get misplaced lol

Anthony, these are TMNT comics fan gold 🏆. The shading and the shell paint apps are tremendous. The heads being character specific was appropriately done. I would of loved if you could of spent a little time on the box since it also seems very well done...maybe for no spoilers? Oh well. The price point🤔 I see these under $180 but over $140...$150😅. I have learned to appreciate the colored bananas over time although I did first know them with the red ones in the comics. The Buff Nordic issue fighting Chang Lee is a favorite.😁 Killer review ✌️
I'd love black & white varient but with the red masks. These look awesome! The giant Tricerton looks dope as hell, too.
I'm curious about the plastic quality. Do these feel like better quality plastic like people been saying neck has been using the last couple of years? Or is it that still easily broken riddle plastic NECA used forever?
I love these Turtles, they were my most anticipated release from Neca, I can't wait to get my hands on them and I hope they're going to be released in EU.

Source material Turtles are always best. Rainbow Turtles are for little kids, or specifically, for parents buying toys for their little kids.
A year later I was finally able to pre-order these on Big Bad Toystore.
I only read the first comics and only because I discovered that the movie and 2003 animated series where related to the first comics, now this 4 dudes from the other comics I have no clue but they look great and I want them, hope you get the Triceratops to review of this line is just a beast. Super cool that you got this guy's as sample and hope they give you more to review.

These figures look great! I love the mirage turtles, but I don’t think I’ll pick these up. Or at least not actively look online since the shoulder joint is a bummer and I already have the street wear turtles that have more or less the same articulation.
Glad Eastman and Laird settled their differences and are back to making TMNT again.

Compared to the mirage comics, I say their legs are pretty accurate based off the awkward artwork.
In the comics they have tails??
Colors and the letters on the buckle. Its goofy but you can't tell them apart except for the weapons theyre using and sometimes they swap weapons.
It's hard to watch someone that has no connection to the visual history of the figure and what they're based off of.

That's a FANTASTIC looking set. First I'm even hearing about it. And to answer your question, if I do get a chance to buy these, I'll be utilizing my acrylic paint pens to update the bandana colors.

Sorry I'm new to Neca stuff. Does anyone know if these are actually going to be sold at more stores later and not be a Target exclusive forever? I was told earlier by some collectors I know that these will most likely be sold at more stores later, but my local shop is now telling me that as far as they know these are Target exclusive and not coming to other stores. This is an issue for me because I'm Canada and there is no target here. Toys R Us still exists here and they usually get the Target exclusives in Canada but nobody seems to know for sure. Cheers!

I like the all red because it was the original intended version of the turtles before corporate took over and marketed to children. The comic turtles would straight up kill you.
I wish they had used different size/frame bodies for each turtle to give them a little variance. Not a big fan of using the same identical mold

I feel like these could also double as IDW turtles but I'd paint the bandana/masks the blue, orange, and purple. Wish we'd get a set of IDW Turtles.

The original TMNT before the 1987 TV series kids show was a violent gorry indie comic punlished by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1983.
When u look at the box art pics. You git Mike and ralph mixed up, ralph has wide teeth showing grin, can even further more look at markings on back of box ti confirm raloh wearing the hood.

Thanks for reviewing this set. As excited as I am for these figures I think I might have to go on a bit of a TMNT sabbatical after this 4-pack comes out. I have a glut of TMNT figures from both Neca and Super7 and I have to just take a step back and not buy anything from them for the time being. But I might jump back in if they revealed figures from the 2003 cartoon series because that show was my jam.
As far as the unified red bandanas are concerned, I’m warming up to the look.
