  • We can expect to be contested by future adversaries on the battlefield all the way to our industrial base - to sustain our forces on the front lines, we must modernize our logistics enterprise.

Logistics is one of those topics I could go on for eons on disambiguating innovation to light for the future. Lot's of points to think about. Over distance implies time and potential upsets. It first starts with the grueling hours of accounting for everything, but we'll skip that nightmare. Terrain is a consistent factor, as well as the enemy. To be ready across all the fronts of where the Marine Corps go- with sustainability, as well as getting them there, encompasses all of the potential of effectiveness. Trucks take roads, and there is plenty of experience to suggest that isn't so simple. These things coincide with joint-operations, such as fire-support, but not always. A robotic bear-pig was considered as a replacement for the donkey, essentially mechanizing infantry with their own gear, but both can be equally as loud. If the bear-pig was quiet, I could see it redeeming success, especially if it had collapsable "wheels". The robotic bear-pig was meant to out-perform the radio-flyer over tough terrain, and it certainly does, albeit, there are limitations of its potential. At a time, there was consideration of an electric sled, with tires or treads, that would cart with the troops or to the troops, achieving the desired effect. The reality is, you'd simply need more. Granted, most fly-boys would volunteer to sling-load the gear and give it an old heave-ho, but that's hot-shotting we simply can't afford to fuck around with. However, a small flurry of aerial drones could do the trick. Helicopters, quiet gliders, and other ways of air-lifting can prove to be effective when all is clear, but somewhat give away the position of those that need to remain low-key, and being shot down by small-arms is still a stark possibility, among other things. If electronic warfare is in effect, there's little that robotics can do remotely. There is a different game-plan altogether when the fan and the shit are one, with all hell, high-water, and hands on deck. The Marine Corps AAVs have evolved into a prime example of logistical theory, but they still need back-up and logistics, too. There's a point and time for an AAV, and they serve a purpose, but there's still more to be done that it simply wasn't meant to do alone. If the USMC had nothing but AAVs, we would surely win, but, again, we're meant to work smarter, not harder. But here's a hypothetical situation: There are Marines with just enough they can carry and have to walk nearly 10 miles away from where the vehicles don't draw the enemy's attention. 9/10 times, they'll probably still use a truck, horse, pig, cow, or radio-flyer if they're allotted one, but there-in is where a missing link is most frequently asked for. One could design a mechanical drone take a preset path without GPS, or a remote, but it can be hit-or-miss. You could command a land-based vehicle to go 10 meters forward to traverse a ditch, but the actual length, dip, and climb of a ditch would prove otherwise. A VTOL, or copter drone could simply stay at the same elevation, and not have that problem. YET- there is a truth that both must face! It has to not only keep up with the Marines' pace, it has to endure the time. Batteries and fuel are also part of such logistical means!! It is a conundrum. Flying drones would have to come in later, or they would just be burning fuel while Marine's walked. I have seen some of the innovations in larger drone copters that the U.S. has come up with, and they may be effective when the time is right, perhaps air-lifting the incapacitated as well. However, they are still vulnerable to anti-air ordnances, and expose the infantry to the enemy. An inner shell would stave off most small-arms fire, but eventually something that big will attract a missile, flak, or even bring back prop fighters as well. Ukraine has shot down several drones with a Yak, and power to 'em, but that's heroic with respect to modern warfare. What are the core realities of the situation? 1: We have too much to carry, 2: We don't have enough, 3: It's the danger zone. Simply using artillery to transport goods would be a novelty, which would only make Blue-Falcon seem nice. There's a bold tape of "nope" covering all the hoops to get through, and the job at-hand is a situational effort. A squadron's worth of even smaller helicopters or fleet of small vehicles could get the job done, but then electronic warfare comes back in to play. Luckily, aerial drones can be pre-programmed in a mechanical sense, without GPS, to also serve the same purpose, though land-based vehicles cannot. A solution to remote access being inert would be to simply use a wire or cord to redeem control- though having an extra on the vehicle would be problematic if an enemy got ahold of one that had a weapon. Surely, the ideas had been thought through several times over. but.. what if. . we simply didn't have enough drones to be effective? You fly in one drone, you only get one angle. You fly in 10 drones, you get 10 angles. If they all get shot down, nobody died, and you know where the enemy is. Send in 10 more. One might say "where the fuck are we just going to get 10 more? Well, you could stage several at their own logistics point/LZ, and deployed by truck or ship. It might look like you're exploring Mars, but it'll get the job done. Turbulence and air-mass is the #1 factor that fights miniature winged aircraft because of surface area and the process of which it gains lift- that kind of speed to retain flight is part of its flaw in theory at that scale. Can it even land? That, and moving too fast isn't going to help if you can't slow down. UAVs are great and all, but they only go like one direction. The quadracopter does a fantastic job of mitigating such an issue through practical means, though not as fast unless tilted, which would be problematic for carrying a load. Of course, simply putting the propellers on rotating gyros and rotors to make it "stand" could produce wizardly results.. but that kind of tilt may concern some people. Might as well just make a helicopter, right? There's a reason why we un-retired an old HMLA squadron. We don't have someone small enough to fly little helicopters, and we're not handing that over to AI. You'd have to train a bald-eagle hard, and then accommodate some kind of collective and cyclic control. If we could break the language barrier, I'm positive a beaver could do it, but we'd be dammed.

Our non-infantry personnel will need more consistent provisional rifleman training to protect themselves and their supplies from enemy peer sof. It is not unreasonable to expect that our non-03xx personnel will have to defend themselves from units that are specially trained to destroy them so as to isolate our fighting units. Convoy Security, ECP's/ VCP's, Tower Defense, Security Patrols, Detainee Handling, Combat Lifesaver, Mass Casualty scenarios, Communications Security, etc. will be very important. In addition, I'd argue its time for stripped down "Ranger-ration" style MRE's, and mess tins replacing paper plates with plastic silverware. Just off the top of my head. Foraging won't always be a successful strategy, but it's good that we're starting to learn it so we can fall back on it, PLUS it's low-cost, low-signature.
