As an elementary school teacher, I can speak about the pushback these ideas will receive from our teaching unions and teachers. As it is, we have a lack of resources and often times have to spend hundreds of dollars out of our own pockets for these kids , and we do it happily. Schools do not have the capacity to teach in social distancing settings. Yes, we are at home , but us teachers are spending 8-10 hours of our own time designing lessons to help our students while trying to take care of our own wellbeing and families. It is extremely selfish to send children back and their teachers to unhealthy environments. We have to be able to work together.

There would not be enough space for all of our kids to go back to school. The teacher’s ratios are roughly ~30 kids so how many students will the class have to cut to obey social distancing? Classrooms would have to be cut maybe in 1/2 or down to 10 students. What about the other kids in the district? Do they rotate and have kids come in two days a week so the whole class isn’t there at one time? Do they open more classrooms to have smaller class sizes? (I’m sure schools are full and don’t have enough extra classrooms to cut every class in 1/2 or 1/3.)They might as we’ll continue online schooling during this pandemic.
Brittany Dobbins exactly I agree.. it’s not like the education is not getting taken care of.. we all know that nothing is better than physically being at school but if things “education wise” is good then we should keep it that way.. it’s tough but now the kids have gotten used to online and a new routine.
Considering all odds... and possibilities, it's wiser to be safe rather than sorry, regardless of those sacrifices we must make. Once contamination gets foothold, then all is lost. Are we willing to take that chance?
I keep thinking about the scene from the movie Jaws when the woman is looking through the crowd for her son on the beach and he is dead in the water from a shark bite. I'm sure he would feel differently if his young son and his grandchildren we're forced back into a public school situation. Oh he has money so his child and his grandchildren are in private schools, and aren't subject to the same situations as children in public schools.
Hello from France. After 8 weeks of one of the strictest lockdowns in Europe, I just sent my kids off to school this morning. This was an important issue to people here because of inequalities between parents’ ability to homeschool. Parents had a choice to continue home schooling or not. The schools have organized things very well. Hand washing stations outside every classroom. Each class has a different time and a different entrance into the school. The children are spaced out and the teachers wear masks..recess was apparently pretty weird. Classes have different staggered times to recess. No balls or getting close to one another. No cafeteria ( here we normally have 2 hours for lunch so kids go home to eat anyway) The kids will certainly adapt. It seems we will have to learn to live with this virus.
The problem here is that the classrooms are over capacity. We have more students in the building than what should be allowed. Space was an issue before this virus. Lunch is literally 30 mins to ensure everyone eats. Kids are in school from 8 am to about 3 pm. People work til 5 pm or even later, depending on the job. Commuting may be an average 1 hr. Majority of jobs here aren’t as flexible to allow parents to work from home. Or allow parents to leave early to pick them up. You may lose your job if they are too flexible towards you. People don’t earn as much to have childcare. So it’s hard to have someone pick them up. Depending where you live you may be earning too little regardless of your credentials. NYC is an expensive place to live but it’s hard to find livable wages. They take out so much taxes from your paycheck. You also pay high premiums for insurance coverage. There’s so much to factor in. It’s a serious domino effect. It’s not as easy as changing schedules. Other first world countries their school system is better than here in the US because the government forces companies to help you.... this capitalist country only benefits the top 1%. The working class is forgotten.
This whole thing is so scary. I’ve been out of a job since March. I have $0 to my name. Bills keep coming and are getting stacked in a pile. Everyday I wake up, I feel like this is a nightmare that hasn’t ended yet and I’m still asleep. But, it’s real. I’m so depressed and can’t go anywhere or do anything because I have an autoimmune disease. I can’t take this anymore!
Meanwhile in Michigan, one of the three hardest hit states with the most EXTREME stay-at-home policies, STILL had a record spike today in spite of this. There is only so much staying at home will do. It's as good as it gets.
I think it would have been helpful to talk about the logistics of reopening schools. I'm a public school teacher, and I can't really conceptualize what safety measures the government would put in place to protect staff, students, and their families. How can students stay six feet apart in classrooms if class sizes are often 30+ kids to a room? How can we prevent the spread of the virus if student bathrooms in low-income public schools often went without soap and tissue even before the virus? Students often struggle to bring basic supplies to class regularly, so how can we ensure they'll be able to bring a mask? These are the questions I wished they asked in the segment.
A let's be very clear on something my daughter was and still is I high honor roll student I will honestly say that our school district here in upstate New York has done a phenomenal job at making sure these kids are learning getting the information they need and from the moment the schools close our kids have been continuously learning at a high pace that gets them ready for the next school year however that may look

Whoopie said exactly what I've been saying: let those who want things to open up and send children back to close quarters at school should have to spend a week on a virus ward in a hospital! Let them do the work of a nurse or nurse's aide - let them do 12-hour shifts for just a week. Let them see people dying from this. Then make sure they send their children first!
First of all is already the end so whats the point of opening if summer is already here and close, if this virus does continue on till August then yes practice social distancing separate student's desk, and test ever student, why isn't any body getting it, yes we need to get back normal lives but is not worth the risk but the government has fail to give unemployment benefits to some let that sink in.
Joy.... why would you talk about how we bail out the wrong people for 2 minutes and then end with "We should listen to Nancy Pelosi"?!? She agreed with the stupid bailout bill we passed...and the second one...
Trump isn’t sending anyone back to school, the governors are! Trump is allowing jobs to open. So go to your state officials and stop blaming PRESIDENT Trump!!
There is Home Schooling. All it takes is the parent file a Notice of Intent to Home School. In most states, parents will not need any teaching credentials. Create your 180 day lessons available and have your child take any academic testing to show compliance with home school rules. The fall is that their should be FREE testing for every school faculty and students given before the new school year begin. If not and schools are just opened, there is a possibility of the spread of the virus. I wonder however, what will happen to the USDA FNS and the meal reimbursement. Would that be one of Trumps saving grace of funds that might not be used? I wonder.
Joy, Home schooling isn't against the law and there are home schoolers that have a fairly questionable interpretation of what such an education should be like. So no - I don't think parents keeping kids home would get them in trouble. But schools who are funded percapita could find themselves loosing to online options.
This is just, too sad. A country that is more than willing to utilize children as a chess piece for a political move..........????? ?!?!?! This. Is. Wrong.

I mean Trump is basically saying "look at the statistics the kids death rate is super low so lets take the risk, put children in the line of fire".
i could listen to joy talk about trump all day
First of all is already the end so whats the point of opening if summer is already here and close, if this virus does continue on till August then yes practice social distancing separate student's desk, and test ever student, why isn't any body getting it, yes we need to get back normal lives but is not worth the risk but the government has fail to give unemployment benefits to some let that sink in.
Thank you I love your show..kp up the good work.no school
Okay sheep. Bah Bah blah
So children in preschool and kindergarten are going to play 6 feet apart in the sandbox and playground? Okay. That sounds plausible. NOT!
2.8 million kids under 5 yrs have died this year, but not from coronavirus
Now he says he didn’t have anything to do with the closures 🤡
I wouldn't trust Fauci further than I could throw him.
But u trust trump
@@butterfly-pf8lj never said that. Take a close look at Fauci before you put all your faith in him.
preach whoopi
The schools need to stay closed!!!!
Babies have died in my state Michigan
A safe class at this moment is an empty one
Great Job Joy!!!
Aren't you glad you're not restricted to this guy's understanding of the word "acceptable"?
Joy.... why would you talk about how we bail out the wrong people for 2 minutes and then end with "We should listen to Nancy Pelosi"?!? She agreed with the stupid bailout bill we passed...and the second one...
Preach Whoop!
These ladies blink as much as they annunciate
I am not sacrificing my children for this psychopath.
Why are they shooting this as if they are not in same studio together
It’s not at all realistic to send children back to school!
Trump isn’t sending anyone back to school, the governors are! Trump is allowing jobs to open. So go to your state officials and stop blaming PRESIDENT Trump!!
Why do we act like kids need to work hard and to to school more than adults? Its a disgrace kids are being thrown off the bus.
It may help to maybe bring schools back in the fall on a 6 day week and do a 3 day for the kids. That way they can do half the schools in a day.
Watch and pray.🌎

There is Home Schooling. All it takes is the parent file a Notice of Intent to Home School. In most states, parents will not need any teaching credentials. Create your 180 day lessons available and have your child take any academic testing to show compliance with home school rules. The fall is that their should be FREE testing for every school faculty and students given before the new school year begin. If not and schools are just opened, there is a possibility of the spread of the virus. I wonder however, what will happen to the USDA FNS and the meal reimbursement. Would that be one of Trumps saving grace of funds that might not be used? I wonder.
both sides using each other's kids as poker chips is annoying
Divert the budget that goes to his stupid wall and give it to the people to help during this covid crisis as financial assistance.
Arms crossed means closed to any feedback.
Where is Meghan McCain??????
Joy,
Home schooling isn't against the law and there are home schoolers that have a fairly questionable interpretation of what such an education should be like.
So no - I don't think parents keeping kids home would get them in trouble.
But schools who are funded percapita could find themselves loosing to online options.
This is just, too sad. A country that is more than willing to utilize children as a chess piece for a political move..........????? ?!?!?! This. Is. Wrong.
Joy has been a lot more fired up than usual, and with good reason. I love seeing her passion and speaking up for what she believes in.
Trump was right. Fauci and the View were wrong, as usual
Where is Megan she should have her nieces and nephews go to school as she thinks dr fauci has been saying different wrong things since beginning! Yesterday...she said it . I wish she or her husband goes to serve in a veteran house and care for them please .
Trust your kids health to Trump I dont think so
Who do you trust?
@@robschmitt3171 How about the head of immunology for the nation for decades over the expertise a lying tv host with no formal education who told us to inject disinfectant. Do you want your kids to die or get a lifetime disorder? Its an autoimmune response acquired post virus its not a new thing just now it cant be ignored, this is about the 3rd condition proven real lately. Before it was lyme disease that was proven real, then autoimmune reactions against muscles were proven real, now this post viral syndrome is proven real. How many diseases do we have that are actually just a post viral syndrome. How can you even consider putting kids health at risk, science airs on the side of caution always and when you dont have all the facts you have to be even MORE cautious not less.

Kids in Sweden never stopped school-deaths 0
Of course kids can choose to opt out of going to school, it's called homeschooling Ms. Joy...
WTF is with you know who????
Cute how he folds arms
What’s that green thing on whoop’s left hand?
I think the most people have suffered whether you voted for him or not under trump death and health has been disastrous under him.
Vladimir Lenin would be so proud of this show
