- On 18th Aug 2018 a 145 tonne transformer left Tilbury docks, went round the M25, its destination The west Weybridge substation in Surrey suburbia. Here the tricky stuff starts.
Sat here laughing at the people that came to watch this, then remembered I just sat here and watched this.
Orchideous lol
It’s one thing to watch it on your phone but it’s another to actually go there on the day to watch it in person. Each to their own though at

This is the most exiting thing to happen in Surrey since cat got stuck up a tree in Woking in 1954. What a day THAT was, the whole town was out, Mrs Fenemore made tea and scones for everyone. To top it all a fireman fell out the tree and ripped his bollocks on a branch but he still had a smile on his face.
morry271 .
That's Surrey for you !! 😂😂
oooooOh ! I thought you were talking of that time, when the firemen were on strike, and the''Green Goddesses' ( Military firetrucks) were used as stand-ins. Their first call was for a cat up a tree, they got the woman's cat down, they all had a nice cup of tea, waved goodbye, and ran over the woman's cat.
Ahhhh, Mrs Fenemore what a kind old lady she was. Was a shame to see her pass.
I lold so hard...
morry271 lol awesome😂😂😂
2021, in lockdown, at 4:49am, watching this. A new low. 🤣
How did you cope with the excitement. 🇬🇧👍
🤣🤣🤣 what’s next!?
2021, out of lockdown, at 05:37. New lows are yet to come!
What a day, what a time to be alive. People were waiting out all night for a top spot. They still talk about it in local schools.
I like heavy equipment. The operator is a very good skill. Very good engine sound. Thank you from Japan.
Kakoï !
I like heavy equipment too. How is your mother doing lately by the way?
That's what she said!
I remember the whole of Christchurch (Dorset) turned out one day to watch my mother-in-law navigate a roundabout.
People still talk about it.
She didn't manage it quite as quick as this guy, though.
Coincidentally, she went the wrong way round it, too.
They still clapped though.
Still, she's in a home now....somewhere.
I'm still in therapy after witnessing that.
Lol made me titter that did
Proud to say ‘ i was there that day’! Ahhhhh, the memories!🤣🤣
Painful day that was.
i rem that
This is the kind truck driver I'm talking of. Professionally experienced.
What a truly fantastic bit of driving. This was shown on BBC 1 on Sunday evening and the driver was nominated for Driver personality of the year
bit unfair since there were 3 drivers required in total
The driver must've felt like a celebrity with all those people watching.
Ha yes good one
The coppers were having a very nice day. So important.
Drivers (plural) - there were 3 of them. Front pulling driver, load trailer driver (in the cab at the end of the load), rear pushing driver.
And then the driver at the back be like "ooh no one noticed the second driver at the back"
No pressure 😫 lol 😭😂
AND NOW THE STORY WILL BE PASSED ON FROM ONE GENERATION TO ANOTHER
Amazing video that fits perfectly with the music. What's going on with the Police car dramatically pulling in front of that Fiat Punto as well? 😂
Haha i was thinking the same. I initially thought it was to block the car from crossing the roundabout. Must have been a proud police moment for him 😂
I wondered that. I think the punto bumped him as well. Wtf 🤷♂️
Police mindset
What about 1:23 when the cop walks out in front of that big car and has to jump out the way and it beeps at him lmao 🤣
^ That's around 0:40, for anyone who's wondering
Absolutely fantastic. Such experts and professional transport. Well done. Just glad I wasn't in my car behind...
Why didn’t they announced this event early on national Television so the whole country could come and watch as usual.
As is tradition...
BIG respect to the truck driver- no pressure on him at all with all the ppl a'watching for any slip-up. Team-work in action!
I'm pretty sure the only reason most of them were there was to see him get stuck.
Or flatten the traffic lights. Of course thats why we were there.
If you drive a truck for 10+ years i don’t think it’s any more pressure than a regular presentation for a group of people at work. It’s just about doing your thing while knowing that people are watching you.
super hero. Hollywood will come knocking
Sure, that roundabout should be named with rhe drivers name and ornated with his bust.
Well. This is peak RUclips. It can't possibly get better than this
Reminds me of my schooldays in late 40's watching Pickford's low-loaders turning corner by my school, taking locomotives from Vulcan foundry to Liverpool for shipment to India, China and other broad-guage railway customers.
And when it finally made it past, every cheered, then went home for a nice cup of tea. Cracking.
☕
Just a perfect day
Everybody said cheerio! Drink some more tea old chap!
And when he finally made it past, they all walked down the street to the 2nd roundabout down the road, with 4 more to go
Mm, yes, indEEed. *sip*
Wow! A ton of logistics went into that tractor/trailer ensemble and the man in red definitely earned his pay. Well done!
The things I end up watching on RUclips in the early hours of the morning! Lol!
Bravo au conducteur de tête, ainsi qu'à toute l'équipe qui collabore. Il faut vraiment être unis dans ce travail de précision.
Excellent !
There's no way that those two police motorcycles could be classed as a 'Wide Load!' These riders need to have a lot more confidence in their abilities, as well as greater spatial awareness.
and that patrol ve -hicle. I thought he was going to do a hand brake turn.. amazing how people react to a camera.
Maybe they're just too fat for the force.
Have you met a modern copper? Those signs are there due to them being forced to lower the acceptance standard for new recruits.
Lmfao 😅😅👍
caution "wide arse on bike".
Fantastic operation organised by ALE . We saw them when they started their firm in Stafford. Now they're international. Well done chaps.
they're crap
I was there that day and It was one of the best days of my life, my friend Sam snuck onto the back of the truck and we never saw him again.
Excellent driving! Good job! 😎👍
Experts in logistics! And a professional driver who engaged the roundabout so smoothly. 👏
Bat aren’t all the drivers like that?
Sat Nav: "at the next roundabout, make a U-turn".
Well it beats the crowd turnout for the England team home coming in 2016
Peter Anthony Handball?
Jeez ! That guy is a hell of a driver ! He deserves a payrise or a bonus ! Well donne mate ! 🏆🏅👏
Absolute madness ensuing on the streets of Surrey that day. This is one crazy story the grandkids are going to be in awe over
Having used that road countless times when I worked in New Haw, when I saw that that is where this was filmed I really could not imagine something like this would be possible!
Used to work a few hundred yards from this roundabout back in the 60s, wasn't there then. In fact I also lived a couple of hundreds away, and walked this route every day for about 5 years.
Fantast driving - I couldn't manage a small horsebox never mind something of this size - RESPECT!!!
As part of the New Haw 18/08 re-inactment group, I thank you for this document so we can be as accurate as possible. It is a sight when we all dress up as the Wide Load and struggle to cross the Roundabout
Where would we be without you active historians to keep our history & tradition alive and relevant for future generations. I thank you for your service.
Why is Surrey's entire population watching?
Why am I watching?
Learning about hooman behaviour? 🤔 lol
I think you mean feet not metres!
Tis the mystery of the event 😳 we're all mesmerised by its hypnotic power
They have nothing else to do.. or so I hear
I don't know what's more sad. The fact that half the population came out to watch. Or that it was recommended for me by RUclips.
What's sad about an admiration of professionalism?
Rather watch this than drama tv shows
What's sad is you watched it on youtube and mocked those who saw it in person
you don't know till you look, besides, i thought the truck had smashed through a house, disappointing really
Both I would say
Look at the workmanship in that transformer! The whole thing is one of those moments when you wish you could say........" I was there that day"
This suddenly appeared in my recommended tonight!! Often travel through Byfleet and New Haw, so watched in amusement! Everyone will be famous for five minutes - and this was most certainly the drivers turn.
We used to live along a main road, where there would often be a heavy haul vehicle (carrying a couple of South West train carriages) passing through late eve. Used to excite my children no end when they were little - seeing a train outside their front door. 😁
Takes me back. In the 50's-60's our farm bordered a transforming station (Super Grid to National Grid 300kv to 134kv at the time) and Pickfords were bringing in the transformers two tractors at the front . steerable boggies and a push/brake tractor at the rear. At 12 years old to sit in the lead Scammel and to feel the weight pulling you back despite the power was something I will not forget.
I seem to think there was a larger one a few years after that had four tractors at the front and two at the back, moved early Sunday morning.
As a Canadian, I really enjoyed seeing the houses and businesses and the clean well kept streets. Interesting tat such a massive machine needs to wind its way through a residential area.
That’s one of the nicer parts of the U.K. You should see some parts of Birmingham😳😳😳
It’s literally ALL residential for miles around so no choice really to get that equipment where it was required
rural area, no other road.
Reminds me of the French village that, every month or so, gets a plane wing driven down its main street, missing buildings by inches.
This will have been a pre planned route that had weeks of planning and would have been authorised with a traffic commisioner. The risk will have been calculated and planned for so it was perfectly safe
That is so very tight and look how everyone is turning up to see the lorry negotiating around this roundabout
I’m married to a retired police motorcyclist…I can smell those leathers from here..😊😍
Have to say the manoeuvering of mahoosive wind turbine blades round French roundabouts is more spectacular. The gendarmerie, however, aren’t a patch on our officers..😉
But kudos to the HGV drivers of all nations….skilful stuff.
Absolutely amazing. These guys deserve our respect and a pay rise
Ok pay him more from your own pocket then xd
I have never seen this in my entire life, engineering in practice, SUPERB
Actually, this is very satisfying! The truck driver has some skill!
I was led here from the comments in another video. I live in Surrey so I wondered if it was anywhere I knew. This is in NewHaw literally 1 Mile from my house. Can't believe the people lined the streets to watch😂. Music is hilarious.
Clearly not much happens in Surrey
That is modern liberal culture.
Maybe was on a Sunday afternoon?
laoluu I’m assuming so but look at all those people!
This will be talked about through the ages as one of the top ten momentous occasions in the history of modern Surrey.
Richest county in UK..
That is some next level logistics right there
I’m a saddo I loved watching that tv prog where they’d get big loads to move and would have to get places shut down etc it takes a lot of planning I loved it it’s a skill hats off mate
Props to the truck driver and crew steering the back . Whole town came out to watch... No pressure😂
Should of monochromed and scratched up the video and put on a Pathe newsreaders voice over in the vain of "And here comes the plucky British driver. Will he make that awfully tight turn? The crowd seem to think so! Well done that man!". Oh and kept the 1960's music. Excellent.
Amazing. Also I felt like I was watching the start of an episode of Thunderbirds.
No pressure, mate.... Just slide her round and be on your way 😂👍
The music is perfect.
No pressure on the driver. Whole town watching and cops waiting for him to get round it... Well done driver..
Wow! So many people, life in Surrey must be pretty exciting. They will be talking about this for years. LOL.
They are all rich in Surrey so they don't work and have fuck all to do so it was either golf or watching a truck come pass.
Surrey is a bedroom community for the rich they work in London and don’t interact with the locals. The locals meanwhile struggle and work hard for very little while the rich people snub them on the street. So it would be the less well off out seeing this as there is precious little else to do in Surrey but work your arse off for nothing in return. Don’t begrudge us a bit of interest in the day. The last excitement I had in Guildford was 25 years ago when the fire alarm went off in house of Fraser at 5pm just as people were leaving so all had to evacuate, turned out the sprinkler tanks emptied and flooded 4 levels inc running down the escalators so many of us stayed on to try to clean up while firemen swept water out of the carpets into the stairwell to try to get it out. Mopped water up with ruined £200 throws!! Fun times 🤨🤪
This makes me want to jump into ETS2 and do a heavy haul.
Awesome work lorry driver and all the team. Have to have enormous patience for this work
This so thrilling. I had to go and make a cuppa and get a biscuit. Cracking news item. 👏 👏👏
WTF is that music seriously transported back to the 70s such a shame
Nice! Rear steer is a great invention for the exceptionally long loads.
i drive bus with rear steer (mercedes capacity) and it is already fun to watch what it does when i take a turn. but this one is another level lol.
Ewwww. Thats what he said!
What have I just watched..lmfao. was a real family event for the town.. even the police felt important..🤣🤣 The music was brilliant..very humorous 👏
I am whelmed watching this. Not overwhelmed or underwhelmed. Just whelmed
The most exiting event was the Austin Maxi at the end!!
Wish they had an Austin Maxi at the end of ALL videos
my oldman had one in antique golg fuckin thing broke down everytime we went out in it 1750cc woo
II was born in 1933 and lived in New Haw until1946. I lived on this road, Woodham Lane #261. What memories. I worked in the fish and chip store just down from the Black Prince.
I used to go line dancing near there. Small world. X
Can I nominate the background music as the UK entrant in next year's Eurovision? The tension, passion, pathos, is unforgettable and beyond compare
Brave roundabout. You stood unmoved in front of a massive truck, crowd and law enforcement.
That was hilarious, thanks for sharing.
there's actually a music score with this vid. fantastic!! hahaha...
driving a rig like these is , as a matter of fact, art! so why not music as well. great show!
I really love that people came to watch this, feels like a simple pleasure!
Thats a big transformer.
Glad they rectified the problem!
I just watched a near 9 minute video of a truck going around a roundabout. I’ll never get it back.........
John mcdonald didn't you see the title dumbass
Me to, do you think youtube would refund us?
you think wasting almost 9 minutes watching this was bad? How do you think they felt actually having to do it? Probably took longer than that 9 minutes.... and they couldn't fast forward either.
@@afestusafestus5141 r/woooooosh
This was some awesome and amazing driving. The co ordination between all parties was slick and professional. The people could have kept further back, typical ignorance about driving something this size. Very impressive, especially with all that pressure. I wonder if they considered moving the island and strengthening the road there!! Lol🤣 terrific driving. Good job everyone.
What a team! Worth all the money they earned and more
I have nothing but admiration for drivers of these sorts of loads.
(N.B. should have used the Huge Load music from the original Thunderbirds TV show!)
Kept waiting for the A team to pop up somewhere ! 👀
Big thanks to all truck drivers all over the world you make things easier reach people everywhere
With that music I was half expecting a cowboy to come cantering along the road (on his glistening horse) shouting yee-ha while waving his hat in the air above his head!
fantastic choice of music, well done..
Love the music goes really well.
What an awesome video. It was like i was actually there! 😃
Not trying to sound prissy but I think its a marvellous work of art to transport something this vast through the streets. And to build it in the first place.
2022. 30years ago I used to run through New Haw often but only in 19 or 26 tonne lorries. I find it amazing that in the intervening 26 years, nothing seems to have changed.
What the heck is the music all about
gives it an 80's action feel.
Great respect for HGV drivers
That was actually much more enjoyable than i originally give it credit for..
Loving the very funny comments being written here, but it has to be said that is very impressive engineering and very skilful driving.
......and an Austin Maxi to finish it all in style!
The Maxi also took six hours to do 3/4's of a mile!
George Jacob but used slightly more fuel....
Love a Maxi.
the poor maxi looked scared to death as the wagon passed by
I spotted the Maxi too!.... Had some giggles in one of those things 👍🏼
All respect goes to the driver and the engine..
For the 1st Time , that Truck Driver felt like a STAR 😂, where his talents are being appreciated 😂👌🏼
Mate. This is some classic content right here
What a fun place to live, this is entertainment at the highest level.
Yeah the guys at 6:39 agree with you, so cool!
Nice scenery, and with strong and reliable machinery from Germany. Nevertheless I recognized the classic (or now vintage) Austin Maxi at the end of this clip. And finally a MAN is at home everywhere.
German - or Swedish maybe?? I couldn't help noticing the Skanska van following just behind the heavy load truck.
So I was the lead driver in this convoy, I can confirm that was an annoying day!!
I was there and only watched this video to see if I could be seen in it... and yes, I can... So whoooopie. More people turned out to see this transformer than would have turned out to see the Queen. Although the guy who made this video has murdered the experience with his version of lift music.
The 'spare' car transporter,is actually a 'cherry picker'It even has the facelift logo on it.They provide access platforms, for workers to get high, safely. You can clearly see the 'cage' for the workers.
I believe you yes it’s to lift the over head cables out of the way
And the tree Surgeon there too to cut branches or clear debris fallen onto the road if any trees get damaged
"they provide access platforms, for workers to get high, safely."
Rather sporting of the British don't you think. We here in Canada are just told not to come in to work and to sleep it off.
@@jussayinmipeece1069 Too subtle; most will have missed your point! 🤪
Great music. I love it!
Wow what a moment. The acompanying music was equally as exciting, very fitting. The family and myself thoroughly enjoyed this.
It must be an amazing place to live if the whole town is out to watch this
Great footage Jeff - it's a thumbs up from me :)
thank you Brian.
This came up as recommendation after watching some ambulance channel stuff. Even though you can't see it move on the round-a-bout, it's still a nice quality video you made. I'm sorry to see that a lot of people are trashing this video because it's not up to their standards. If they are so full of them self, they should make this kind of video and upload it to youtube and see how they like getting this kind of critical response. I'm sure they wouldn't like it either, so why people reply shit online just because they are behind a screen, it's fucking easy to be mean and nasty, but it takes more effort to be kind and compassionate and provide the maker of this video with positive recommendations and how to improve his or her video making/editing skills. So, keep up the good work :)
what a fantastic choice of music.
I occasionally delivered the packaging containers too brush industries in Loughborough , the size of some of those transformers were immense! If you miss weigh one of those axles , the tyres just explode ! I saw it happen one day when I was waiting too get unloaded , and the tyre popped and it rocked about like it was going too turn over ! The danger of these things are underestimated
