Picked up a bottle of this other day it is unreal. The finish is like lemon rind with cream and the first taste is so light yet sharp and fresh with subtle fruits .
I just got home from the hospital today. My wife and I had our very first child, a beautiful baby girl!! To celebrate I popped open my first bottle of Lagavulin 16. Both have been incredible, although my new daughter is not nearly as smokey. It's been a wonderful transition into the next stage of manhood. Thanks again for the work you guys do, I appreciate the channel and the shenanigans.
WesIncredible, that's awesome man!!!! Congratulations on the Lagavulin 16 and quadruple congratulations on the baby girl! We're proud to have you with us 👍
So, I'm in love... got my first pair of compass box whiskies - peat monster and spice tree, and they smell amazing! Haven't tried them yet, but just from the smell... oh man!
So Daniel, what you described is called a triangle test. We use them to spot the differences in product, typically that a product that is about to run matches the standard.
Exactly. It's actually a scientific thing that the best comparison of anything for a human brain is a trio. two is too few, and 4 + you're brain starts to forget what happened earlier.
Going back to your 10 whiskeys for beginners, it got me to finally buy my first bottle of Highland Park 12. I only just opened it and I feel ashamed for not buying it sooner. To me it has a lot of the notes that I find in Ardbeg 10 that a really love.
Love your content guys. I've learned more about Whiskey through this channel then any other source on the internet. Tonight, some old friends and I are getting together to play some obscure board games and share in each other's Whiskey collections (I'm going to Mooch some Jefferson's Ocean, so I'm excited about that). It's special moments like these that really make Whiskey the perfect drink for bringing people together for good conversation and great fun. What are a few memories of your favorite special occasions were Whiskey was an integral part of that experience?
Yo, greetings from Sweden! My comment doesn't really have anything to do with this particular video, but what ever ^^ I found your amazing channel through Modern Rogue and have now binged your 100 first episodes (might need a life..)! Thanks for the awesome and fun videos! Your on screen chemistry is amazing and very entertaining to watch. I've also bought some whisky's because of your videos, Black Bottle, Talisker, Cragganmore, Dalmore 10, Lagavulin 16 (my personal favourite) and some others.. I don't have a problem.... Today I picked up a Bowmore and ordered a Bruichladdich Laddie and a Dalmore 12. Okay, I swear I don't have a problem :).. Either way just wanted to thank you for making these awesome videos :)
Noooo! I was so pumped for the livestream and then it's on a day when I'll be at a training out of town. Will you post it on the channel afterward? I would love to watch it somehow. I can also say, I've learned so damn much about whiskey from this channel, and now regularly bore my friends with facts and tidbits. I need to try the blind trio tasting, too.
Would love to see you review the glenlivet cipher. Yes it's an expensive bottle but I treated myself and loved it I just can't put my finger on the flavours
Ive never been able to mooch a good whiskey, but I am always trying to get people to expand their whiskey standards, and this usually invloves me sharing my stock. Hopefully one day my whiskey generosity turns into some good whiskey mooching karma. Either that or I need to meet some people with more advanced whiskey knowledge. Haha
There was a special on BBC ( I think) of the building and first sailing of that ship. It was amazing to watch. Almost as good as these videos. I think I'm writing of the right ship.
So I know sherry finishing is a fairly common thing in scotch but I'm not sure what that actually tastes like or what notes it would bring to the whisky
Whiskey Vault get a small bottle of Olorosa or Pedro Xemanez sherry, nose it and taste it. Those are the 2 most used sherry casks, they are not expensive. If you try that you will always be able to pick up whether a whisky was sherry cask aged or finished.
Whiskey Vault Tomatin a few years ago came out with a 4 bottle set for around $300.00, each bottle is from the same distilled batch however they aged barrels in 4 different sherry casks, fino, mantazello, oloroso and px. You can either buy all 4 or individual bottles, hard to find have to go on line to buy. You can smell and taste the difference. Fino is light, dry and nutty, not typical sheery sweetness.
Sammy Sanchez So, seven months has passed... Daniel did not answer, so here I will interject my finds.. The specialtybottle.com is a good place to get small corked bottles for decanting your bottles that are starting to lose volume. I have the 375 ml. and 250 ml. bottles with T-corks...Best prices I have found for this purpose...
have you guys done any Australian whiskys are there any Australian Whiskys? i am not a very knowledgeable Australian we do have Bundaberg Rum, though i wouldnt really reccomend it
Hi Dan and Rex just started watching the channel a couple days ago its great stuff and i have now watched about a quarter of the videos already. A while ago i had a whiskey by the name of tin cup and am wondering if you would review it? When i tried it, i got almost a spearmint feel from it. Let me know what you think.
So you mentioned teachers which is my favorite blended scotch and is something i like to take to parties so everyone wants a glass then i havent lost a nice single malt. will you ever talk about it or is it just not up to scratch?
Finally caught up! I think when I found your channel you were at about 6 or 7k Subs - Looking now you've passed 12K! Amazing work guys, keep doing what you're doing! Now I have one request, speaking of a trio tasting, when you get up to Ardbeg 10 (I'm sure its on the list somewhere already), I'd love to see a 3 way battle royale between Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10 and Laphroaig 10.
I stumbled upon your videos last night and think you guys are great. I've learned a lot from watching a couple of your videos, and bought my first bourbon (Buffalo Trace) today. I'm curious to know what Canadian whiskey's are your go to drinks.
I don't get people that say "since finding your channel my whiskey collection has grown by...." bullshit! since finding this channel I've became friends with the stray cats at my local bottle bank. I've been buying a bottle or two every week and I've currently only got maybe three glasses of Ardmore left. How on earth is anyone building a collection?
I've said in way too many other videos on youtube, how much I adore the 10; well last week, I bought this 15 bad boy along with 5 other whiskies, and want to do a side by side tasting session - can't wait! They are my local distillery too, only about 8-10 miles from my new house, so I could potentially get some cracking distillery only bottles, yum!!! :D P.S. It is indeed the Isle of Mann (pronounced as spelt) - you'll get there yet lads! :P
Ever since you convinced me to grab some Stranahans, I've been exploring American single malts. I picked up a bottle of McCarthys from oregon. A peated american single malt. I thought it pretty good similar to Kilchoman. Thoughts?
Whiskey Vault Westland is going to release in 2019 a peated whisky using peat from the Northwest, they have been importimg Scotland Peat but I don't know from what region.
Is that 1pm in Austin? I'm not really familiar with US time zones, but if you tell me its 1pm Austin I can use time.is to get it to my time. Also you need to accept whisky suggestions or do a whisky list so that people can drink the whisky live with you. I nominate Glenfiddich 15 Solera Reserve!
Awesome channel just started getting into whisk(e)y and have actually been buying bottles you guys review I own a few pizzerias in Brooklyn and wanted to know what whisk(e)y you guys would recommend drinking with pizza just for fun thanks maybe you guys can review one on your channel 😉
So, I remember the first time I had a food completely alter the taste of an alcohol was when I had pizza with Bodington's pub ale. combined with pizza it is the creamiest, most amazing beer ever. I'm not sure what would have the same effect, but I'd guess bourbons or a more vanilla'd scotch with low smoke? Challenge accepted.
If I want to enjoy both in the same day does one overpower the other? Springbank 10 and Longrow Peated are my Campbeltowns while Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10 and Octomore 6.1 are my Islays. I have went back and forth between them all and I can't tell if they are cancelling themselves out or if one is overpowering the other in the way Octomore makes Glenfiddich 12 taste like water only not as severe as that
Added 4 more whiskyes today. Damn you guys! Johnny walker 12 and 15. Chivas Reagal 12. And The Highland park New 10 yo viking scars. HAVE YOU SEEN THE FIDDLY BITS ON THE NEW BOTTLES???!!! OH MY GOD!!!
Enjoying yer banter gents, can you do a re review of some other Glencadam whisky, I live about a quarter mile from the distillery and have had a few bottles, having looked at a review of the 21 while sipping on the 3rd to last dram from my bottle, to my horror I found that 3 teaspoons 😱 of water were added and found to release soooooooooooooooo much more from the glass, my 😱 is because till this point I had under rated this 21 for being weak in flavour, who would have thought to add so much water to a whisky that appeared weak in robustness but more so I'm neer finished the fn bottle b4 I find this out. well what a journey. 🤔😁
Hey guys, I had another dream with y'all in it. I was at the local liquor store looking for something to try. Richard Paterson shows up and suggests Dalmore. I'm kinda awestruck and just say, "Yeah! That sounds great!" We both begin looking for the Dalmore 12 and are having trouble finding it. That's when Daniel and Rex show up and ask if I need help. Y'all utterly fail to help me find any Dalmore and we eventually give up. I suddenly remember that I can invite the two of you over for dinner and drinks. Daniel says that he probably can't make it, but Rex says that as a mooch, he is obligated to come and drink my whiskey. Fast forward to having dinner and you both show up. Rex says that he is surprised that Daniel made it, as he was supposed to be in jail. Daniel says that he just decided not to go to jail, and they have to deal with it. The shock that I was harboring a fugitive shocked me awake. And I woke up with a powerful hankering for Dalmore. I remember telling y'all that having you two over for dinner and meeting Richard Paterson was the best day of my life.
3:55 Amen brotha We literally have towns called Lano spelled Llano and Lamesa which should be spelt and spoken La Mesa. So yea we do don't give a fuck.
Daniel, don't feel too bad about not knowing about direct messages. RUclips's messaging system has always been poorly run. It's so hard to find, and notifications come through so inconsistently.
I really enjoy whiskey review shows. Especially yours, becuase it is approachable. Like hangin with friends. I love the whisley history and enjoy the ever evolving mooch history. I do find that one aspect of whiskey review shows is the story each whiskey has outside of the facts. Example: laphroig 10 to me. Tells the story of a farmer of the coast. He smells the salty seas as he tastes the soil and grass from the plow in front of him. He tastes the subtle sweetness of fresh spring water as he finishes the day. I think this aspect of enjoying whisky is important. Why do you think it really isnt discussed as much or am i just a wierdo that is way to into drinking whiskey...lol
All good whisky is a story in a bottle. I love this.I would love to see a blog that reviewed whisky by only telling made up stories instead of tasting notes.
So guys this Livestream event couldnt have been better timed, it just so happens that it will be on my god damn birthday (albeit at 4am on the Sunday here) so I will definitely be making it up in time for a breakfast whiskey and tuning in.
you guys need that second camera to back up the mooch's claims of 'nailing' things. the only thing he tends to nail are those tasting notes. keep it up!! woot woot
Hey guys I got a bottle of angels envy $80 and some change but on the nose and on the tongue all I get is alcohol am I broke and can't enjoy the good stuff the right way
darrell hood just keep trying, it takes time. My personal journey has evolved over the months and is always getting better. Just take your time and enjoy it.
I'm going to go ahead and give the most likely advice than Daniel will say, add a little water to it, try it again and repeat this process until you can start getting other flavors. If you don't typically drink liquor with a higher proof it can be difficult to get past the alcohol taste and smell at first.
I'd second the practice and the water but for me I found the best trick was also doing what they do in the show... have multiple options to try in the same sitting. I love bourbon but it all tasted like "bourbon." Then one day I had Knob Creek, Bulleitt and Angels Envy all the same night and the differences were much more obvious.
I like to think that at this point, Rex would mooch the blood whiskey, not because of his overwhelming mooch tendencies, but because of the bond He and Daniel have created and grown.
the great mooch of legends would consume the blood of his enemies and in doing so take their power. Rex is not the one of prophesy, thus Daniel must continue his journey.
I was going to comment earlier and say Pewdiepie is infringing on their territory but others beat me to it. Possible collaboration???? Go from 10k subs to 100k subs in no time if that happens. There goes the neighborhood and the great dialogue between the fans and the Whisk(e)y Vault, oh well it was fun while it lasted.
Story ends better for the hobbits than for Ragnar, or pretty much all of his sons, for that matter. I'd stick to being a hobbit, if I had the choice between the two.
Hey guys, a friend of mine knew I'm into whisky and just sent me this link (ruclips.net/video/gfjgISRI5E4/видео.html). Apparently Pewdiepie is a whisky fan and he has some nice japanese whisky. Though you can see some great scotches in the background too, like Laphroaig and Dalmore. Thought you might appreciate it.
You guys should do a Top 10 whiskies for advanced drinkers next time you feel like pandering. The beginner thing is great, but for those of us who been around a while, we're looking for new, exciting, and challenging stuff. The beginner whiskies are easy to find. The complex and challenging is not so easy, especially finding one that's readily available and not overly expensive. The Longmorn, Old Pulteney 21, and Glencadam 15 would all be great additions to that list. BTW, I believe Rex is pronouncing it correctly. My grandfather, who comes from that area, calls it Old Pult-Nee. I've heard Ralfy and distillery employees pronounce it the same way. But who really cares. :)
Whiskey Vault I think it's hilarious how American pronunciation always sounds super hick and southern compared to the English version. "C'mon Billy, let's go o'er yonder and get us some of that Old Pultaynee."
Picked up a bottle of this other day it is unreal. The finish is like lemon rind with cream and the first taste is so light yet sharp and fresh with subtle fruits .

For the live stream, could you put out a list of what you two will be drinking? It would be kinda cool to follow along at work, er, HOME, yes home.
Ah, good call.
I was just going to ask the same
Nice save Wes
Great minds.
This is a great idea. I'm all in with it.
So, I'm in love... got my first pair of compass box whiskies - peat monster and spice tree, and they smell amazing! Haven't tried them yet, but just from the smell... oh man!
Mathias Storm i'm trying to understand why you would just smell them and not taste them. :)
Chad Winters haha, good point! I got them and was not able to taste them, but I just needed to know what I was in for - it's gooooood.... 😉
Sparkle @ 9:38
I am eternally grateful for these comments

If anyone in the UK is wondering, They are 6 hours behind us. 1pm CST is 7pm BST.
Jason Fisk Thanks!
Been watching you for long time, I enjoy your blog and your sarcastic comments . Jim here from Canada. Keep it up .
Congrats on hitting 10k! Keep up the great work and Cheers to the next 10k!

So many good ones, but really a large part of my family and friends experiences have been with whisky. weddings, funerals, etc. It's perfect.
Whiskey Vault, yup, there's nothing more fun than a funeral. More whisky for me!
Yo, greetings from Sweden! My comment doesn't really have anything to do with this particular video, but what ever ^^

We'll keep it, record it, and keep it posted on the channel! Sorry to miss you.
Hey, no worries, you have to do it when it works. I'll catch the next one!
Haha
Live stream is in my calendar! Now for the big question.... what whisky do I want to bring to watch with? Suggestions?
You guys are awesome. Btw Rex.... some of us like learning about different whiskys. Although i have learned some sweet mooch maneuvers
In Sherry, it brings all the rich fruit notes the direction of plumbs, figs, cherry, etc.
Whiskey Vault get a small bottle of Olorosa or Pedro Xemanez sherry, nose it and taste it. Those are the 2 most used sherry casks, they are not expensive. If you try that you will always be able to pick up whether a whisky was sherry cask aged or finished.
@Gilbert Goldsmith, YES. I just bought a handful of bottles of each last week to get better at exactly this. Well recommended.
Sir Daniel, what type of bottles do you use to keep samples of whiskey?
Sammy Sanchez
So, seven months has passed... Daniel did not answer, so here I will interject my finds.. The specialtybottle.com is a good place to get small corked bottles for decanting your bottles that are starting to lose volume. I have the 375 ml. and 250 ml. bottles with T-corks...Best prices I have found for this purpose...
have you guys done any Australian whiskys
are there any Australian Whiskys?
i am not a very knowledgeable Australian
we do have Bundaberg Rum, though i wouldnt really reccomend it
Damn you Jason Meyer, any way you could do 1776 bourbon or rye?
Hi Dan and Rex just started watching the channel a couple days ago its great stuff and i have now watched about a quarter of the videos already. There's a direct message section? I won't be helping clog it up right now, but I had no idea there was one either.

ooohhhh, I like this battle.
I second this. In fact, I really like the idea of a blind taste-test.
I stumbled upon your videos last night and think you guys are great. I've learned a lot from watching a couple of your videos, and bought my first bourbon (Buffalo Trace) today. I'm curious to know what Canadian whiskey's are your go to drinks.
We have a handful in the reviews so far. It's not generally flattering, but there are some real gems out there.

Thoughts?
i dig the McCarthy's! We'll have to review it sometime.
Whiskey Vault Hell yea. You guys should do a American single malt episode and review a few of em.
Whiskey Vault Westland is going to release in 2019 a peated whisky using peat from the Northwest, they have been importimg Scotland Peat but I don't know from what region.
Whiskey Vault I take it back. It's not like kilchoman at al. Way denser and quite a bit more oily of a palate.
WEstland is freaking awesome
Oh damn thats 6am.. Will you make the vod available?
We absolutely will
Haha I had to start out with a bang. Rex, it was worth it to see your reaction.
Yes! 1pm Austin.
Now I'm curious what type of mic you guys normally use and what it's placement is like?
It's a Rode that is about 2 ft above Rex's head
Awesome video! Would be awesome if you guys could review Bain's single Grain from South Africa
Awesome channel just started getting into whisk(e)y and have actually been buying bottles you guys review I own a few pizzerias in Brooklyn and wanted to know what whisk(e)y you guys would recommend drinking with pizza just for fun thanks maybe you guys can review one on your channel 😉

Daniel do you have glencadam 10 to review ❤
Campbeltown or Islay for your finishing whisk(e)y?
Islay. All day long.
If I want to enjoy both in the same day does one overpower the other? Springbank 10 and Longrow Peated are my Campbeltowns while Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10 and Octomore 6.1 are my Islays. The live stream will be at 4am in Brisbane, Australia... now you're mooching my sleep you magnificent bastards!
yep! *Im in Adelaide
Nathanael Wiseman it is the ultimate conundrum i face, stay up till 4am, or wake up at 4am
Fiddly bits make the world go round.
How do I go about sending you guys a bottle of local whiskey for you to try?
Interested in having you try Copper Fox Single Malt / Copper Fox Rye.
I've got both! we'll sample someday
When's the audio class?
Damn my son has a ball game on the 16th, well pray for rain LOL
was waiting for Daniel to jump in and say he was a former shipmate on the largest Viking Ship
He was just being modest, for once.
Dammit guys, Your first livestream and I will be out of the country. Maybe I'll be able to watch it from my hotel in Scotland.
Wait! There’s a direct message section?!
Hey can we get a review of the new Ardbeg An Oa ?
As soon as I can get one.
Hey guys, I had another dream with y'all in it. I was at the local liquor store looking for something to try. Richard Paterson shows up and suggests Dalmore. I'm kinda awestruck and just say, "Yeah! I remember telling y'all that having you two over for dinner and meeting Richard Paterson was the best day of my life.
I'm grateful to be a part of this dream AND to not be in prison.
You are now way past 10k subscribers, thinking of doing another live stream soon?
Wait? What? There is a direct message?
3:55 Amen brotha
We literally have towns called Lano spelled Llano and Lamesa which should be spelt and spoken La Mesa. So yea we do don't give a fuck.
Great to see the live-stream will be happening 15 days and counting. Hope you booze bandits came though Harvey alright
Daniel, don't feel too bad about not knowing about direct messages. RUclips's messaging system has always been poorly run. It's so hard to find, and notifications come through so inconsistently.
Thank you for being gracious. It makes up for Rex :-)
I strill don't know where or what it is :P

I expect a cheers from you two in the name of the Eagle and Moochism and my commitment to the dram.
you guys need that second camera to back up the mooch's claims of 'nailing' things. the only thing he tends to nail are those tasting notes. keep it up!! woot woot
Hey Rex and Daniel have you heard about the guy that invented the knock knock joke? He won the 'no-bell' prize
Damn, need to drive 18 miles to get this one...
Totally worth it.
Livestream YEAA BOIIII
3 is the right number for experimentation.....
So, if I send you a bottle of Fireball, you wouldn't review it?
Thanks for allowing my comment to make the show.
Did anyone else notice the sparkle in Daniel's Beard at 9:39?
Great vid.
Nailed it!
Yes of course you can join me and the rest of the crew of the Sea Stallion, if you ever find yourself in Denmark though!
I like to think that at this point, Rex would mooch the blood whiskey, not because of his overwhelming mooch tendencies, but because of the bond He and Daniel have created and grown.
Rex so you're allowed Daniel to mooch drink from the bottle he gifted you to make this video sounds like Grand Master moochery my friend
"I've figured out how to handicap the mooch" literally as you poured him another glass. You were played like a fiddle sir.
Damn it. You're too right.
hahaha the ultimate moocher got mooched from.
About the pronunciation stuff my fiance starts shorting out when I pronounce ca-ra-mel, car-mel instead, I love it
the great mooch of legends would consume the blood of his enemies and in doing so take their power. Rex is not the one of prophesy, thus Daniel must continue his journey.
It’s a beautiful malt
soo how mad would Rex get if we posted Dad joke on the live stream every 5 minutes for him to read?
Justanotherparatrooper oh that has to happen now.
That would be great but if he mooches a new drink after each joke we might kill em.
Damn you Jason Meyer, second
I was going to comment earlier and say Pewdiepie is infringing on their territory but others beat me to it. Possible collaboration???? Go from 10k subs to 100k subs in no time if that happens. There goes the neighborhood and the great dialogue between the fans and the Whisk(e)y Vault, oh well it was fun while it lasted.
You guys should do a FACE REVEAL!
First! Great Video!
OK, gentlemen, I am just going to come out and say it. Y'a'lls need to bring in a lady guest whisky reviewer. Make it happen.
So. true. Maybe during the whisky class when our lady sommeliers are with us.
I rate the video 8 very nice out of 10 :P
We just shot a response to Pewdiepie's video today! Surprise on the way. Stay tuned.
Looking forward to it!
Dam
and the list just keeps getting longer and longer
Love the 10 yo
One of the best 10's of the lot. Just bought this 15 to complement it, can't wait to try!
2nd
Yes. The locals all correctly pronounce it Pultnee
Whiskey Vault I think it's hilarious how American pronunciation always sounds super hick and southern compared to the English version. "C'mon Billy, let's go o'er yonder and get us some of that Old Pultaynee."
there's no denying it
Rex,for the love of god .....
Please .I am begging you.do not wear that freaking pink shirt on the 16th.
Haven't seen the Where's Waldo shirt in a while.....
Sorry to tell you it is pronounced Isle of man
i feel like it's more of a reward if i can get you to respond to me in the public comments section :/
