Ron lived across from me and gave my wife the greatest laugh one Veterans Day, She went out to get the mail and heard him echo from the canyon behind us that it was a "Holllllllllllllllliday!" Peace, my brother
I’m so fascinated by this. Thank you for sharing this. I love to watch radio DJs and broadcasters being passionate about what they do specially the good Ol’ fashion way. Rest in peace Big Ron!
I remember listening to Ron in 1973 in Evanston when he was on Super CFL in Chicago. When I was in High School in 1977 in Utah I use to sit in my car and make air Checks of Ron when he was on 64 KFI in Los Angeles. In 1983 my senior year in college I did an internship at KIIS FM and had the pleasure to work and get to know Ron O'Brien. I am sad to hear that he is no longer with us...you will not find a nicer man! Ron would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. RIP BigRon.
Respect and Love...Regret that I just now learned of his passing....Big Ron- You were loved by many and your talents envied by more (including myself.)..enjoy the afterlife my friend...You were a hit in this life ... and will be a classic in the next...
Thanks Tom! What a great jock. Just think about the line-up at that big station in the sky. Robert W, Real Don Steele, Jackson Armstrong and Big Ron just to name a few! Wow
Wow, he passed away way too young. Working in the biz, you meet a lot of on-air people with a lot of tude. Somehow, I don't think Ron was like that at all. Just seemed to be like somebody you'd wanna hang out with. Very rare in the radio biz... but truly welcomed.
I see you wrote this 7 years ago, so you may never even see this reply, but he was absolutely someone you'd wanna hang out with. I had the fun of doing just that during his time in Philly. A few of us used to go out to dinner with him maybe once a month... usually he'd hold court and we'd sit and listen to his radio stories. He was really nice, no tude whatsoever. And it was clear that he loved the music. His favorite thing to do was invite us over after dinner, and he'd play stuff for us from his 45 collection. Those were the days...
Big Ron, a NICE guy, and a GREAT air TALENT. I sure miss the good old days of Top-40 when the jocks could do the set-up and deliver a killer punch line over a 10 second intro. Anybody can be "funny" in three minutes, but only the TRUE PROS could be funny and engaging in ten seconds or less. Big Ron Thank You for all the great shows. If there's truly a "Rock & Roll Heaven" you know there's a heck of a Top-40 station playing the hits, and Big Ron is doing drive time. R.I.P. Big Ron, R.I.P.
Yeah a little bit. After four years of college radio I did middays at 59 KFXM in San Bernardino/Riverside until they changed formats in 85'. If you were in LA between the hours of 2 and 3 you could hear Ron of course at 102.7, and I was on the AM at 59. Of course my signal was a little weak but that was a pretty cool memory.

What piece of that song with a male singer doing a high note is that at the end of that video?

Big Ron O'Brien was one of the Boss radio greats. Thanks for the memories B.R.O.B.
Big Ron O hosted nights on 66 wNNNbc back in the early 80's. He worked at some great radio stations.
Yes I used to spend an hour or so an evening on the phone with him before his shift. I was fifteen. Do the math.
A very nice man and a great dj. i'm glad to have crossed his path.
I'm not.
God Bless you Big Ron--in life or in death--ALWAYS an inspiration to me!

Big Ron's hero in 1969 was Jackson Armstrong.
