I'm almost crying because this is such a beautiful thing.
It's a very interesting ceremony but I think you don't really understand what it is if you think it is beautiful and gives you faith in humanity. Most of the Indians and Pakistani despise each other and so there is a highly militarized border between the countries you can even see from outer space. Skirmishes between the two sides often break out leading do quite a few deaths. Additionally they both have nuclear warheads pointed at each other, if a nuclear war were to happen it would certainly be between these two powers.

@@rupenshah1534 It was and it wasn´t. There were competing Indian nationalisms of the time. The secular nationalism espoused by Gandhi and the sectarian nationalisms espoused by Hindu´s and Muslims wanting their own states were at direct odds. Britain actually opposed partition.
However when it was clear that Muslims and Hindu´s were willing to shed blood for sectarian nationalism, it became clear that paritition was necessary. Britain then did a rubbish job of drawing the partition lines - although in truth it was an impossible task.
Although Gandhi´s secular nationalism won out in India, sectarian nationalism ultimately led to his death, and it is looking increasingly likely that his secular nationalism will be replaced by Modi´s sectarian nationalism which leads only to division, hatred and often death
