    My struggle spots are the shed and the basement. My husband has been in heaven for 8.5 years and I still need to deal with all the dead or duplicate tools, supplies for “someday” DIY and things I will never use - like his collection of fishing rods. It doesn’t help that my time is more limited now because I work full time and now have to do the chores we used to share by myself. I just need to carve out the time and prioritize it. One of these days.

    I am redoing my home office, which means a LOT of decluttering! I have shredded a whole garbage bag’s worth of documents, sold my filing cabinet and old desk on marketplace, and have a donation box going. I have professional organizers coming next month, but I wanted to get a head start and tackle papers and other small items. It’s definitely hard work, but it’s rewarding too!

    I've made an addendum for how I am disposing of items which won't stay: keep it super simple. Stuff either comes with me to work (I work with grad students, they will take those free things), goes to Goodwill, will go to JunkLuggers in the spring, or go in the bins. And even making up one bag/box for one of these places give me that dopamine win sensation.

    All I have to do is open the door to look at the garage and I am filled with a sense of overwhelm and dread. I like your tip about getting rid of the donation pile first!

  • @happycommuter3523
    @happycommuter3523 Год назад +2

    Before beginning a decluttering project, especially a big one, I find it helps to do homework first. Research local charity places that accept donations (their hours, locations, guidelines for what they accept); contact the local DPW for guidelines on what can be trashed or recycled; call a junk hauler for their rates and schedules, etc. Some people I've observed hang onto stuff they think they can sell, or that they want to be sure is responsibly disposed of, or that they think they can give to charity, but without researching in advance, the stuff just gets put in bags or boxes and left in the home or car. I have friends whose living room has looked like a storage pod for a year, full of boxes they keep meaning to bring to a charity place but never quite get around to it. Another friend has two cars that nobody can ride in except the driver, because all the passenger space is loaded with stuff. Finally, decluttering can be a dirty business, so be sure to stock up on cleaning supplies beforehand: gloves, sponges, vacuum cleaner bags/ filters, dust cloths, etc. And have plenty of garbage bags/ cardboard boxes on hand... you'll need more than you think.

    Decision fatique is my downfall. If something is useful and i like or think i need it but have nowhere to put it is exhausting agony for me.
    My area that needs decluttering ASAP is my bedroom. I'm scheduled for hip replacement surgery in 12 days so i'm under the gun to get my room organized, tidy, functional, safe. However, i can barely walk, can't lift anything and have run out of money to pay helpers. I need a miracle!

Your right it looks much better. I can actually visualize homes for things now. I have been working in the laundry room for 2 weeks 15 to 20 minutes at a time. With my work hours getting rid of the donation bags is difficult! I always seem to start somewhere else in the house! The paper issue I have solved that, but a paper shredder is key! It’s right where I drop everything keys, bag, coats! Thank you Kay! You combined with Cas, dawn, Dana, Kathryn and Melissa have helped me get to where I’m at now! It feels like it should have enough room available, but because I have my clothes also stored in air vac bags under my bed. So my winter clothes live in those bags during spring and summer and then I switch them over, with my autumn and winter clothes going into the wardrobe closet when they’re needed and spring/summer are stored in the bags under the bed. I wish I could finally get everything in there sorted out and arranged better for easier access to everything. I’m promising myself that come week annual leave from work I’m going to try to do it! Usually by the time we feel a real drive to declutter and organize, the job has gotten daunting and we panic. So we start off with HUGE ambitions to get a lot done. And inside, even subconsciously, we feel intimidated by the enormity of teh task in front of us.
    You HAVE TO narrow your perspective. It WON'T get cleared up in a single day, not a single weekend, likely not even a single week. It took a long time to get to this stage, so likely will take a while to whittle down. And meanwhile, it becomes really hard to argue yourself into starting. You want to put it off, and it's hard to keep at it. Likely you get bogged down looking through old books or journals or photos. You fixate on some minute item and bog down. Because you set your sights too high.
    I've become a fan of what I call 'Puttering-cleaning'. I don't start by looking at the entire daunting job ahead of me, Instead, I set the scale extremely small, usually promising myself only a square foot of cleaning/organizing or less. I 'putter' at the edge of what needs doing. My inner procrastination does not engage if all I'm doing is putter a short time at the edge. Just a little bit and back to other stuff; I can always come back and putter a little more tomorrow.
    But a funny thing happens: The bit of puttering tends to grow. I get into it. And next thing I know, I've spent a half hour or hour clearing a space and cleaning an area, and that inner resistance never kicked in. And I may 'putter' like that another couple times before the day is over. And it goes on from there.
    The real secret is scaling down your goals and just doing as much as you feel like doing. If your goal is small enough, you'll easily take on the work and you'll put in more time than you intended. You have to game yourself.
    This is what works for me.
    Don't define your goal as a room or an expansive task like 'all the laundry' or 'all the dishes'. Just narrow the work to something quite easy that allows you to push back the perimeter. Just putter a bit. It will pull you into doing more than you thought.
