This was a very hard movie for me to watch I'm a soldier or I was a soldier I'm not anymore but I always knew in the 70s what the consequence of nuclear war could be for our country and our world and just tears my heart right out of my chest
If you have ever done any research on Global Nuclear War and it's effects, this movie is quite mild compared to what it would really be like. In the book "On The Beach" By Nevil Shute, the superpowers use so called "Salted" or Dirty Thermonuclear Weapons. Which means the weapons are jacketed with materials like Cobalt. When they are detonated the resulting fallout will last for hundreds or even thousands of years. The damage to the earths atmosphere would mean nuclear winter around the globe for at least several years. Were talking 10 degrees Fahrenheit in the middle of July across North America. What was left of humanity and any wildlife would freeze and starve. Even a very small nuclear exchange, lets say between India and Pakistan. Less than 100 warheads would throw the earths climate off for 1-3 yrs, a drop of 3 degrees F across the world. That alone would cause several billion to starve. Do a little reading on the subject, it is down right scary!!
thomas lewandowski actually it’s far overstated you moron. Cancer rates would go up, many in the immediate blast area would get acute radiation sickness and there wouldn’t be this dumb wave of radiation that kills everything, especially when the nuclear detonations were thousands of miles away and many months ago.
@@maybeiam3367 You see most people wouldn't die from bombs but from inevitable collapse of any means of sustaing city based, industrialized lifestyle with food, medicine .... we don't have simply manpower to tend, manfucatre and distribute food on that scale without all sophisticated transport, machines, fertilizers and their supply chains.
Never understood why he didn't take her with him in either movie. He was the highest in command in America and they were all dying anyway. Of course, there is the code of no women on submarines.
This scene as a subset of the whole movie should be shown each time we discuss both nuclear disarmament as well as increasing defense spending on ICBM, SLBM and hypersonic missiles. The cost for these weapons is not sustainable and the outcome is known (nuclear winter, world starvation). As with prior generations, we have the ability to reduce these weapons to ultimately zero.
The whole point is having them and driving home point that violence pushed to avilable maximum DOES NOT SOLVE EVERYTHING. Guaranteed retaliation and total obliteration. That's the beauty of nuclear exchange - nobody wins, everybody breaks even.
I think people like to face death on their own terms,no one wants a lingering death of suffering,or to watch their loved ones go through the same, taking the pills is a better option when you think about it,peaceful, quiet, your together, you simply fall asleep,no pain,no body indignities, etc, its on your terms how you chose to face it,I prefer that way,but not until the bitter end
Yes they are trained. But in reality does everyone who have the codes to make it happen, whether you are the commander in chief or the person inside a missile silo, are able to take the actions being ordered? No one can say until they themselves are in that predicament. Obviously the military test people in order to know if they are able to respect those orders.
And of course the family towards the end of the picture is the most heartbreaking scene of them all! I wouldn't want to do something to a child like that!
4:00 - I don't think a car would blow up for crashing into a billboard. I have seen loads of movies and tv shows where cars have jumped or crashed through things like billboards and not explode. Maybe they should have had him crash into something more solid.
@@eric777100763 You're thinking commercial power reactors - naval reactors use highly-enriched uranium in their cores, and are designed to go at least 20 years or so between refuelings.
@thegirl44 we certainly like being morbid as a species. Fraud had a theory for this fascination for the macabre but I can't remember what he actually called it. But apocalyptic stories either in novels, films or on TV. are as popular today than ever before. The entire zombie genre is a case in point.
I think I'm not sure but its the first time Peter fully brakes down in the entire film. Up to then he's been one of strongest of the main characters in the film.

THomas Lewandowski A small nuclear war between India and Pakistan that didn't escalculate into a larger one, but would still tip the planet into a nuclear winter.
Not to mention the end of Indian and Pakistan people within a year. Radiation death first, starvation second, breakdown of remaining civilisation and two regions devoid of any life for centuries assuming some of the rest of the planet survives a nuclear winter. Hate to be any surviving politician who emerges from the few bunkers and tries to flee. An end to a entire race of people due to pure stupidity and petty racism with one stupid decision. My only hope is that any decision would be thwarted by reason and the politician executed
@@piotrd.4850 A lot longer than that, actually - IIRC, current designs are for 20 years between refuelings (which consists of cutting the sub in half at the reactor compartment and replacing the entire reactor vessel), though the Virginia class may have a core designed to last the life of the boat (40 years or so).

Nuclear winter modelling shows that UV radiation on all living matter means once the winter has killed all surface animal and plant life, that the survivors emerging are then subject to lethal UV damage due to ozone depletion and therefore standing outside would lead to severe UV damage (including any new plant life or new food production attempts. UV damage to shallow sea life is an unknown. Remember the soil and seas/rivers have been washed with radioactive rain for 6 years. As seen from Chernobyl, any standing trees are dead and their bark contaminated. Its not chavs you have to worry about.

"radiation pills" are only useful to protect against radioactive iodine 131, not actual radiation. All it does is ensure you don't uptake radioactive iodine 131 into your thyroid and give yourself thyroid cancer,

We knew since the 50s
This movie is different enough from the original to stand on its own merits and both are damned good movies.
It’s a bit melodramatic, but I love the part where Dwight talks through his tears with courage for his men. That’s a high mark.
What a film... quite insightful.

They should be broadcasting this movie all over the US, North Korea, and the rest of the world--before we really do it this time.
Along with "The Day After" and "Threads" and one more russian movie.

Thanks for the upload been looking for this movie for years couldn't remember the name but it just poped up awesome movie
The original 1959 movie is the saddest movie ever made.
You can hear the little thing breathing while they say goodbye. It's crushing.
But the sound goes out of sync half way thru this part.
the original movie end was disturbing enough.. this version even more so.. No scene/movie in cinematic history is more troubling....

I love a story with a happy ending
Happy? I don't think so more like sad
Happy? I don't think so
If this movie has one flaw, it is fuel on nuclear submarine.
The fuel on a nuclear sub will last actually a little longer than 2 years so it was not a mistake in the movie.
@@eric777100763 You're thinking commercial power reactors - naval reactors use highly-enriched uranium in their cores, and are designed to go at least 20 years or so between refuelings.

The original movie was so much better. Gregory Peck was perfect.
no captain would ever leave his crew and ship to die with a woman...read the book
I've read the book more than once and frankly I could never understand but then I'm a woman and a romantic.
If everyone was going to die anyway, what difference would it have made?
It just occurred to me that submarines have medicine on board for radiation sickness.
And they haven't played "Waltzing Matilda" once!
Good
Every leader including Putin should watch this movie. I beg you Putin please watch it.
You don't see an issue with Nato expansion and endless US powerplay over Taiwan (which they even recognise is part of China).

@irish89055 I agree there. Its a warning to all of us.
