I cannot think of a sadder ending to any film. Oh there are many sad endings, but nothing as poignant as this one. I never can get past this ending without crying. An amazing film.
This film was made the year I was born. My mum and dad had seen some of the filming being done in Melbourne early in her pregnancy and then little old me appeared. It was such an event in Melbourne at the time. For me, seeing Melbourne as it once was with the old colonial buildings and the State Library, it is a poignant reminder of the march of time. Nowadays the city is megalopolis with many skyscrapers and much of the charm of the city is gone but there are still patches of the old grace still there...the state parliament building, the beauty of the "Paris end" of Bourke street, etc. As for the film, this final scene is gut wrenching. When once we thought of it as pure fiction nowadays it could be become fact in an instant. Too worrying to think about, save for that banner in the final scene... "There is still time..."
This movie and three others, "Dr. Strangelove...", "Fail Safe" and "Seven Days in May" form the four corners of what I consider to be the cornerstones of Hollywood's holding mankinds 'feet to the fire', so to speak, in getting us to take our ability to destroy ourselves seriously. "On the Beach" is my personal favorite. I highly recommend reading Nevil Shute's book!
I cried when reading the novel, in the late 60's. Being set in my homeland, Australia didn't help. Still the best novel, I have ever read, and the movie has not lost any of it's power.
For some reason, FAIL-SAFE, at least to me, seems to have the most horrifying ending of them all, because the rapid succession of all those still shots, in the last few seconds (with the fade-to-white and the noise right after) make you think of when the actual bomb hits and blows everything away…
I saw the movie when it came out. I had just gotten out of the Navy, and so could relate closely to the film. I think the startling last minute of the film was extremely well done, especially the music of the last few seconds. This is one movie I'll never forget--even 65 years later.
Wrong, although Kramer took some artistic liberties, the movie closely followed Nevile Shute's book. The remake shouldn't even be called by the same name.
FUN FACT : Ava Gardner did not say ,,,"Melbourne was the perfect place to make a film about the end of the world",,, the author of the "quote" was in fact a writer for the Sydney Morning Herald, Neil Jillett, who recently admitted that the quote was fabricated. He was writing a piece about the filming at the time, and attributed the quote to Gardner out of spite for Melbourne getting some attention in the "spotlight", something Sydneysiders do not like.
I sympathise with Julian the most. Us single people know that we will end up spending the last moments on our own. He did it the right way with something he loved
maybe someone can help me out -- i always remembered this film ending with an image of people partying at night on the beach, knowing the end was coming, that it was their final night, etc. i must be thinking of another similar film, anyone know?
You might be thinking of These Final Hours, which also takes place in Australia at the end of the world as a solar flare engulfs the world, heading to Australia from all sides.

I share your sentiments Doug.
This so sad because it could be true in the present circumstances,ie Russia, Ukraine, Israel Gaza etc.😢😢😢😢
@@jimduffy1967 Trump is the lynch pin to all that happening..If he becomes president and pulls America out of Nato the show will begin....
Just finished the book, it was so grim but beautiful
I saw this film as a child. I was born the year the film was made and to this day it still haunts me.
No wonder. I’m surprised your parent let u see it. I think my parents would be wirrried about nightmares

Was in Melbourne 10 years ago. One of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen
"I think I'll have that cup of tea now" is the saddest line in the saddest movie ever made.
Things have changed in 2000 version they finish it off with glasses of wine when taking taking the pills.

one of the best anti war movies ever made. i came across it by accident. i get goose bumps with the ending and music
The most disturbing movie I can think of. I have seen On the Beach many times, and I have always lost sleep after watching the movie.

Awesome movie, well acted, great music and a scary message....
This was made during the time when everything had to be viewer friendly. The 2000 remake conveys the horror and poignancy more effectively.

I was 14 when I saw this movie. It had such an impact on me that it still moves me to this day.

@@JLovrak oh I LOVE that movie. I don't believe so, but I agree it's fantastic, I'm thinking of something old/black and white
