- My drumcam footage from the 2015 Skinny Puppy "Down The SocioPath" tour in Milwaukee MI at the Rave/Eagles Club (one of my favorite U.S. venues to play.) This is always a crowd favorite and one of mine to play as well. Just a single Gopro with camera audio so the sound isn't great, but it certainly gives an idea of what it's like for me to play drums with multiple projectors pointed in my eyes for the whole show!

Bio:
Justin Bennett has been the live touring drummer for Skinny Puppy since 2004 and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult since 2003. He has also been the touring drummer for Peter Murphy (Bauhaus), Rozz Williams (Christian Death), and Penal Colony. He recorded and toured with the band Professional Murder Music for Geffen Records from 1999 to 2003. Other projects he's currently involved in include Die So Fluid (post rock), Ketvector (electronic), Bahntier (post industrial), and Askew (audio/video sculpture).

I've been an SP fan since Last Rights came out in High School. Always wanted to see them live and finally got to on this last tour. So awesome to see your playing on this and so many other faves. I really appreciate that SP has generally valued having live drums in their shows. I know it adds a whole layer of technical issues. But the energy that you add on stage is huge! I was curious if you could explain your setup. Are you running triggers on most/all of your kit or strictly playing acoustically and leaving all synthetic elements to backing mix?
Thanks for the kind words! I too am appreciative of SP keeping live drums in the show. 😎 How to handle live drums in an industrial music live setting is always an important issue and in my experience gets handled in a lot of different ways from band to band or tour to tour even. With SP the sound is meant to be super heavy and electronic so most of the original drum machine parts are always there and I decide from song to song where to double up and where to play counter on an all acoustic drumkit (no triggers!)... I basically approach it as if there were two drummers in the band (like in King Krimson for example), but one is human and one is electronic. The two together make for a huge mechanical but organic sound. It's such a blast! 🤘

I have in-ear monitors with a mix of the band and sequences, drum machines, etc :-)

How much of SP drums are live vs drum machine?
As it's primarily electronic music, on the albums it's almost all programmed electronic drums or drum machines, but for the live shows we add the full acoustic drum kit along with the electronic drums and mix them together as if it were a band with 2 drummers, or a drummer and a percussionist, etc... only one drummer is me and the other drummer is the drum machine rhythms and percussion triggered by Cevin. :-)
@@justinbennettdrums Thanks for the info! I figured it was something like that. Can you tell me what is actually being played on guitar? Most puppy songs don't have guitars in them. Is the guitar player just triggering midi stuff?
