What in the world is that noise in the background?!?!? It is annoying!
Ok. This is the first time I have to disagree if you laurie. When I book my flights i pay extra to book the specific seat i want. I have my reasons to book that seat. I will never switch my seat unless I'm offered a better seat in my opinion, i.e. Business or first class to my economy seat. I planned ahead, i paid extra money, it's my seat.
I agree. I fly either cross country or internationally and pay extra for a specific seat. I think it’s extremely rude to expect someone to move or babysit your child because you didn’t plan ahead. I’ve been asked a few times to move to a middle seat in the back of the plane so they could have my aisle seat with extra room that I paid more for to sit with a friend or family member.
I agree because no one ever offers to switch up the better seat with someone else. I now try to get the exit row if I'm going to pay extra for a seat.
Yes yes, if you need that seat and paid for it, do not feel obligated to switch ever.
I didn’t hear anyone say that you’re obligated to switch. When someone asks you to swap to a middle seat so they can sit with their kid you can offer to ask the flight attendant to help move people around so you get an equivalent seat and two people sitting together switch to the same type of seats they already have. It’s not - pardon the pun - aeronautical engineering (ie rocket science).
@@vtcs1963 that's ridiculous. I can't imagine the audacity of someone to ask multiple people to play musical seats just so they could sit together. And I don't care if it's a parent and a kid. If that adult didn't plan far enough ahead so that they could get two seats together with their child, then that's just too bad. I'm sick and tired of people bending over backwards for people with children who think that just because they have a child they can do whatever they want and people will cowtow to their demands. I'm sick and tired of all this belief of entitlement in the world. Take personal responsibility. You're no better than anyone else.
My son ALWAYS helps peop, e with overhead compartments…he is 6’5”…. So glad he does this!
That is awfully kind. My late, beloved husband was a 6' 5" Austrian cop, and he LOVED to do those things for people. Your son is a hero!
Please thank you son. I'm short and I always thank the people who help me, but please tell him how much we appreciate the random act of kindness.
So nice of him!
@@josephcollins6033 No, that's going too far. It's nice that he's helpful; however, a "hero?" No. Let's reserve that honor for our military and law enforcement personnel, doctors, nurses, etc. Those who risk their lives and far too often lose their lives in the line of duty 🙏❤️
@@donnabaardsen5372 Donna, I believe you need to loosen your panties or get some lovin'. How dare you tell me I'm going too far? I hope you are not talking about my Beloved. He was a hero in many ways. He was a cop. I agree with your categories for heroism, absolutely. But, this young man is also a hero. He helps. And, I wasn't asking for your input, Honey.
I had a woman in a scoliosis FB group block me after I said FAs are not required to help lift bags. I even told her that some FAs aren't even "on the clock" when passengers are boarding and thus, if they get hurt, they aren't covered. This is info that needs to get out there! I really enjoyed this video and her perspective. Would love to see you interview more FAs!
We give the Flight Attendants and Pilots a gift bag of candy with some little goodies (like inspirational or funny stickers) when we board. The message we always include is, “Thank you for keeping us safe!” We’ve had FA’s come up and tell us that it made their day, and once (on a regional jet), a lady pilot found us before takeoff. She had a Tootsie Pop hanging out of her mouth. She said she was pregnant, and that bit of candy was just what her baby needed❣️
I've also done this too. They just love it!
I just did a round trip for my grandson's high school graduation. This consisted of two flights in each direction, thus four flight crews. I researched what aircraft was generally assigned for each leg, then purchased enough Starbucks gift cards for each crew, plus a couple extras in case of a plane change. Also purchased a pack of "Thank You" cards from Dollar Tree, which I signed and slipped the Starbucks cards inside. Handed the envelope to the flight attendant at the front door when boarding, politely saying this is for the whole crew. To say this went over well is an understatement - every one of the flight attendants on each flight came by my seat and thanked me personally for my thoughtfulness. It's the little things in life that often pay big dividends, folks!
I ALWAYS greet when boarding and thank them when leaving also say thank you when they give me a drink/snack. I so appreciate what they do for us. I just don't understand why you don't respond when they say hello, such poor manners. Going to remember the $5 tip. Great interview, thank you.
Twice I have flown on an airplane, and someone was in my seat, I politely showed them my boarding pass, and that they were in my seat, and they were really ugly about it. I can see why someone might, ask the flight attendant for help in this matter.
I agree. I think passengers are afraid of conflict and that flight attendants have more authority and know what to say to reduce tension.
I saw a video about a case where two people with the same name were flying on the same flight, and they were both allocated the same seat. Only the flight attendants can sort out that sort of problem.
Thank the Lord for an understanding flight attendant when we were traveling standby. The gate agent said no way, now how, all three of you will be split up. My five year old boy was balling his eyes out as we boarded because I had to explain to him that he needed to be a brave boy. The flight attendant asked what was the matter and she was on that loudspeaker asap requesting for someone to trade seats. Of course several people volunteered and it all worked out.
I always smile and say hi to the flight attendants when boarding.
I always thank the air hosts when I leave. They work hard to fulfill our needs.
Air host!!! You met the flight attendant.A hello thank you for being here and thank you and safe travel when you leave, it is not difficult to acknowledge another human being,be kind and polite .I love to see the pilot when I leave and than him/her for the safe flight.
Hard to believe that so few people acknowledge/say hi to flight attendants. I always say "hi, how are you" to each person I encounter!
It’s just plain rude! My sister says I’ll talk to a wall, but I believe in greeting anyone I meet, especially someone who is going to be helping me on a flight. Flight attendants work hard, and they deserve respect and common courtesy.
@@birdee18 Absolutely! It's such a difficult and stressful job and they are there to help us!
I fly very rarely, but I have always greeted when boarding and thanked when exiting. It's just common courtesy.
@@onerva0001 Same! The real problem is that there is less and less common courtesy 😞 Unfortunately...
Per Delta’s website:
“When packing, please remember that flight attendants are unable to proactively assist customers placing carry-on baggage into overhead bins, with certain exceptions. In addition to keeping customers and crew members safe and healthy, this change also protects flight attendants by decreasing the likelihood of injury caused by repetitive lifting.”
It’s right there for the reading. How many passengers actually read the carrier’s information is another question.
I feel like the experiences of flight attendants and nurses have a lot in common
In the early days of flight, flight attendants had to be nurses. They still have to know first aid.
Captain = doc
I remember my first flight as an eight year old with my grandparents. My grandmother and I wore dresses, pearls, a pill box hat and white gloves. We had curtains on the windows. We could extend our legs out completely and still have room left over. Sigh.
Oooh, I remember Wardair when I was a kid in the 60's/70's. My parents were expats from England, so all our relatives lived over there. Flying was very expensive in those days, and the fares were set by some government agency, so airlines could not compete on seat cost. Instead, they had to compete on service. It was so glamorous in those days!! Steak and lovely petit potatoes and veggies served on Royal Doulton china with real cutlery. Wine for the adults, and all the children were given cute flight bags with all sorts of toys and puzzles and souvenir postcards. I do miss those days!
@@jenharvey8360 I still have my first wings : )
And everyone had dishes with knives and forks. On most flights they served fillet mignon ,
It was something special!! People dressed nicely, it was classy, now I absolutely hate it, people dress like they just rolled out of bed, and being herded thru security like criminals, demeaning!!
"I have a problem, can you help me, please" is a very useful phrase. or even just "can you help me, please?" and a pro tip: ask a guy if you need help lifting your carryon. unless he's a total jerk - and you can usually identify those by sight - he will be HAPPY to do it.
Yep, I removed the other commenter (from the channel forever) with the ugly comment; don't worry about answering them fyi.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie kind of identified them by sight, didn't i?
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I didn’t see the comment but great! Idk why these morons even bother to watch when they are just going to be mean. I really enjoy your channel and your personality!!
It definitely helps to have greying hair if I need to ask a nice fellow for help 🙂 And a warm smile goes a long way.
@@jenharvey8360 I’m not grey lol and I always get help without asking!!
My biggest pet peeve is passengers who put small items in an overhead bin space instead of under the seat 😖
Some people, especially taller men tend to travel light with one bag so their legs can extend under the seat in front of them. I don't blame them for putting their smaller bag in the overhead. In fact I prefer it to people who are forever pushing the limits of what can fit up top.
I generally check my luggage. I put my backpack in the overhead bin with a clear conscience. I didn’t check my luggage to make room for your carryon. And I like to have my feet fit under the seat in front of me.
@@SharonRepici I think shea meant smaller items like hats, jackets, or items like small gift bags
I always give the flight attendants my utmost respect. Why wouldn't you?! I just don't understand people! I really liked this interview, Laurie & Jeannine. Thanks!
That's the reason I always check a bag- I'm in my late 70's, 5' tall, and can't reach, and I know the flight attendants are not insured to help. Plus, these days the overhead bags are already full by the time I get to my seat - one of the most annoying parts of travel - inconsiderate, selfish travelers.
Bless you, you've lived a long life. It might be time to add yourself to the group that doesn't need a wheelchair, but might need assistance or more time getting settled. My husband is 74 with a few medical issues and although he could stand there and wait to board it will definitely take just a little longer to settle in.
LOL. I’m old and look frail to some people. There is always some kind gentleman who wants to lift my bag for me. I just let him without telling him I’m a powerlifter.
I'm older.but don't want to look old and frail. I just ask a guy to help..or a woman. I was a flight attendant, always said * don't bring it,if u can't swing it.* Try not to bring so much. I travel intl on my free flts world wide, and I don't want to look like a victim. I'm no one's victim!
@@user-zn5qg4se6q I look more frail than I am because of arthritis but as I said I’m a powerlifter,. I hold several state records for my age group and I can easily put my bag in the overhead 😁. I’m amused that people want to help so I let them and just say thank you.
@@user-zn5qg4se6q. Competitive powerlifter with multiple state records. My age group is 70-74. I don’t have a lot of competition. I appear more frail than I am because of arthritis but I can lift more than people think. I’m amused that some people assume that I need help and I let them do it because they just want to be nice.
I always say hello when boarding and smile to the crew that are welcoming us on board. I say please and thank you too. I had a flight attendant thank me on a flight for helping out the lady sitting next to me. She had recently had surgery and had healed up enough to fly but still needed assistance.
I’ve walked onboard several flights, where I’ve said hi to the flight attendants and they completely ignore me! I still say hi, though.
There are an unfortunate few attendants who are jerks. Most are very nice.
Same!!
I had absolutely no idea that flight attendants could receive tips! I only actually thought about it when my family and I missed our flight home from NYC to Los Angeles and we were upgraded to first class on another flight. We had never flown first class and the 2 flight attendants that were working the first class cabin had given us a card with their names on it and they addressed us as Mr. & Mrs. and by our last name. They were very attentive even though they were taking care of the other passengers. I asked my husband if we were supposed to tip them but he thought no that they probably couldn't accept tips so I didn't.😮 Now I know! Thanks for this awesome video ladies!
I love the tip on giving a tip to a flight attendant for their airport driver tip! Love this!
Great video Laurie! I learned a couple new things. Hearing Ollie lapping water and squeaking the toy was priceless.🐾❤️
Did you see me get on to him in the bloopers?
I always greet and when leaving say thank you to attendants.
Me too, it may be an age thing (yes, I'm a boomer), but I do not understand why so many people have apparently never been taught basic manners.
I wanted to be a Flight Attendant in the 80’s and I was to short and didn’t weigh enough. 😓
I am a school bus driver now for 25 years and I too don’t like when I tell them good morning, or have a great afternoon and I get little responses.
At 62 years old I still think it would be fun to be a flight attendant..
Thank you for sharing..Enjoy your journey in life and keep smiling
Great video, Laurie! It’s so beneficial to hear from a professional who has years of experience with these issues. I appreciate your effort in producing this. I would like to apologize for all the inconsiderate, inappropriate, and rude people out there.
As a travel agent I hear about the paid seat issue a lot. If the airline has changed your flight, whether it be the aircraft type or route, the computer doesn’t know to reassign seats together. Even when it’s all on one reservation. If you’ve had a change to your itinerary prior to departure, contact your travel agent to get the seats reassigned (if they’re on the ball, they’ve already fixed this) or contact the airline directly.
For me this is even more helpful to hear from her than a captain, though that’s fascinating also. I always try to treat them with respect and use manners. I think it’s a lot like waiters at restaurants. People can be pretty rude to them also. I bet people don’t address others when they’re in the wrong seat in case there’s a confrontation. No one should have alcohol on a plane! Thank you for this!
That’s ridiculous! My glass of Prosecco will not hurt anyone.
Thank you so much! Great info. Sadly, much of what she brought up is basic manners. It makes me sad to see that so many people have become rude to the service industry. I learn a lot about people by the way they treat others. I will be working harder to be even more kind to the attendants on my next flight.
When I was in high school and about to go on my first date, my Dad gave me some advice I have never forgotten. "Don't look at the way the boy treats you, look at how he treats the waitress. That will tell you all you need to know about him."
@@jenharvey8360 YES!
@@jenharvey8360 Yes yes!!! The best advice ever! Ahhh those sweet dads. I miss mine.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Yes, I still grieve my father's passing every day. There was nobody I was closer to.
Love hearing their perspectives! ❤
I always say hello goodbye and thank you to the FA’s. They may be saving my life in the case of an emergency !
I talked my best friend into applying to be a flight attendant because she liked to travel, knows 5 languages, and it’s hard to find good jobs in Europe without a college degree. And apparently so I could live vicariously through her. 😅
My last couple of flights, I've brought chocolate for the flight attendants and they seem to be very appreciated of it. It is such a small thing to do to make their long day a little bit brighter.
Enjoyed this! Thanks to your special guest! 😊
The hellos, thank yous and goodbyes are getting rarer and rarer in all forms of public transit. I always say these things to my bus driver and he always says it back to people who do!
Good information. I think the reason most people are hesitant to inform someone they are in their seat is due to the fear of the response. Unfortunately in todays world way too many people are borderline crazy. I have seen people on airplanes go nuts over simple things. One time a woman sat down next to me and was exhibiting odd behavior. She repeatedly said that she felt claustrophobic and afraid. I tried to say calmly things to her but as takeoff approached she was becoming scary and wanted off the plane. As I was trying to get up to let her out, she jumped up and jumped on top of me to get out. I alerted the flight attendant and she moved her. It was a very unnerving experience.
I sympathize with how uncomfortable this might have made you, but please be aware that claustrophobia is just as much a real medical issue as diabetes or a broken leg. It's not something you can just turn off because it's making someone else uncomfortable.
@@jenharvey8360 her actions and behavior were beyond a simple issue of claustrophobia.
I’m always polite, and give a greeting to the flight crew when I’m boarding and disembarking. I’m 6’3, I have to turn my body in the seat and my knees are still against the back of the seat. That’s with the seat in the upright position. When the person in front me reclines their seat I just bit my lip, and sit quietly sit in pain until the flight attendants ask everyone to put their seats forward.
As a travel nanny, I have traveled with many different kids. If old enough we talk about being thankful to attendants. But mostly I model the behavior and kids follow.
This was very informative! Thank you for having a flight attendant tell us this!😀
Thank you! This was so helpful and interesting from the flight attendant's perspective!

Glad you enjoyed it! It's so interesting how their jobs are different than pilots etc.
Thank you, Laurie for asking so many good questions!
Any time!
The comment about sitting apart, enjoy it, is so true.
I was so stressed on an int'l flight when the gate agent told me my CPAP counted as my personal item and told me I had to check my carryon. There were lithium batteries and all my numerous Rx meds in it and I panicked. The flight attendant was so nice and took the airline tag off my bag and told me it was fine. I was so grateful to her.
How do we convince gate attendants that CPAPs don't count as a personal item? I was so freaked out!
Just make sure you read, and maybe print the airline's web page. No need to argue, just ask when the policy changed and show them the online policy.
@@SharonRepici overseas flight. No printer for 2 weeks. It never occurred to me as we'd never had a problem before.
Ask for their manager.
Awesome information video great job to you both
Learned so much today! My thoughts on the couple seated apart were EXACTLY Jeannine’s thoughts. Recently I offered to trade seats with a dad so he could sit with his non-English speaking wife & toddler. He got my aisle seat; I moved to a middle seat. Little did we know he would be across the aisle from a baby that fussed most of the flight. Still, I think they appreciated it. I hope. A bit of consideration goes a long way
I have so much respect for the crew members when I’m traveling. They take care of many passengers and sometimes they are pretending and not polite with the crew.
Love this one!!!! Thank you for all this info from a flight attendant!!!! Love your channel Laurie!!!
Thanks so much for this Laurie and Jeanine! Flight attendants have an incredibly difficult job these days - thanks for helping us understand. We have twice traded seats so we could sit together, but it was always aisle for an aisle or window for a window. I would never ask someone to give up a better seat for a lesser one. Also, we gladly trade with others (even if they don’t ask nicely) if needed. My husband and I both help young mothers with children and multiple bags if they wish. I hate it when people behind us crowd up for disembarkation to try to pass everyone. One “lady” almost tripped me with her suitcase pushed ahead when I was trying to get out. Not nice.
My favorite video by far. Thank you.
Thanks for your interview Laurie. Most informative. We should always treat others like we would like to be treated.
Hi there from a recent subscriber. (From Australia- so long haul flights are Really Long Haul).
I enjoy and appreciate your content, thanks x.
What a delight and added bonus advice was your guest Janine- and the epitome of kindness, diplomacy and professionalism combined!
Another very helpful video- Thanks to you both x
I’m fortunate as a disabled person that ramp staff will assist me with boarding. I always make a point to speak to the flight attendants regarding my possible access needs. I also usually ask someone near me that is taller than me to retrieve my bag for me when we land.
I would never ask a flight attendant to lift my carry-on into the overhead bin but so far flight attendants seeing me about to lift my carry-on up have appeared at my side and done it for me. I always thank them graciously. I travel only on major commercial airlines.
I’ve never asked anyone to help me but there’s always some guy who wants to show his muscles! This has happened to me since I was a teenager and now I’m 61 so I don’t think it has anything to do with how attractive or old you are. There are genuinely people out there who will still help for no reason other than to be nice.
Love this video! So funny but informative. Love your doggy drinking water & playing in the background too!🐶
Thank you for the info.
Thanks for watching!
Just got home from a flight from Houston, TX, and people still put their rolling luggage flat down, taking up more room than necessary. So I’m the one who will put one on its side so I can put in my duffel bag or whatever bag I have to put in the bin. 🥴 People don’t like their stuff being touched but I don’t care anymore because you should think about how to conserve space when we constantly hear the gate staff announcing lack of room in the overhead bins. Sometimes the bins don’t allow suitcases to be out on their sides, too, so can’t do much about that.
I am also a crew member with a major airline and I just want to say, thank you, thank you so much for this video! Thank you!🙏
Thank you so much ❤️

I have low vision I recently went on an international trip and I brought my own Sippy cup for beverage service. I have trouble seeing the regular beverage cups And their for their are a lot of spills This way I could see it more easilywhen I was drinking it and I could more easily See it and avoid the mess of a spill. Most of the flight attendants appreciated that!
Brilliant invention!
I always smile when I board the plane, I always thank the flight crew when I deplane, common curtesy. The flight crew works hard! One time I flew overseas, the plane was older plane with several broken seats. The passenger in front of me reclined their seat, and the seat ended up in my lap! Flight crew couldn't switch my seat as the flight was very full. The passenger in the front would only sit straight during the meals. It was the flight from hell. I still thanked the crew when I deplaned. It's just common decency.
So true about people talking while announcements are on.
I always listen. And look at the flight attendant. And I fly a couple times a year.
So disrespectful. Being kind and polite goes along way..
