40 as a producer is dope cuz he managed to make this type of atmospheric spacey sound somehow work with rap music. In the 90's or 2000's it probably would've been looked at as some weird alternative shit, but him and Drake made it cool and it resonated with the new generation. His beats takes me places especially the Lust for Life beat and the intro and outro to Paris Morton.

40 is also a phenomenal pianist… I think it’s why so much of his music has such a unique shape to it. All of those melodies and chord progressions we hear and love come from his flexibility as an actual pianist.. he’s one of my favorite producers and as I listen to his work more I think this is why.

This video is mind blowing for me. As an artist I often feel limited by a finished instrumental. My story always felt like it had to fit in with a theme of someone else's creation. It feels like my time is already taken up as a vocalist by searching for inspiration, coming up with concepts, writing and editing, recording and producing my vocals. I know there's all type of kits available but truly my heart resonates with 40's Toronto sound.
It's one of the reasons I started to see music as a vehicle to hold a visualized space that I'd created with sound, as a stage to convey raw emotion just for me (and a hope that maybe other people would be transported too) because I want to exist in that space and I wasn't hearing it in music besides from 40/Drake.
This video showed me that not only can I achieve some of those sounds in my music, but I can DO IT MYSELF? Incredible. I am truly grateful for 40's contribution to music, it's had an effect on my life more than any other artist. Truly grateful, stay blessed.

At first, this video reminded me of a Unison ad parody a la Tantacrul. Glad I kept watching as not only was what he helped create pretty cool, I liked his minimalist approach and philosophy of not throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the mix because you think that's the only way to sound good. One kick and one tom can do so much but you can ruin it by burying them under unnecessary percussion.
