Great review! I have a 2022 Impreza Sport and really love it. For my needs it is roomy, relatively fun to drive, and fairly economical. Sounds like the 2.5RS is a nice upgrade, just wish it came with a spare. Not enough changes to make me want to trade, but love the updates Subaru made. All the small changes really add up.
I believe that below the foam insert there is still the space and part for a spare under there. Its the same body mostly for crosstrek and impreza and some of the Crosstreks still come with the spare. So still can get there with extra steps. And I have a '21 Sport and as much as I like the upgrades to this model, not making the switch. But if I was in the market today for myself? This car hits so many sweet spots.
Same! Just got my 2022 Sport last year and I love the car, but the extra HP in the RS isnt enough to convince me to trade again. TBH it looks like the RS is a combination of the Sport and Limited Trims, I think we got the best parts of that already!
If you are a car enthusiast on a budget you simply can't afford a brand new WRX no matter how much you may want one. The previous Impreza sport never sold well because it was underpowered, unattractive and even the manual 5 speed was rubbery and imprecise. So if your a serious car enthusiast on a budget looking for something new your options is something like the Civic Sport that is still available with a manual or just buy a used WRX with high miles that is within your budget. I my self had to buy a used 05 WRX 10 years ago because I could not afford a new one at the time. But it has served me well and still enjoy driving it.
Ryan, Subaru is never gonna take the L regarding the lack of physical hvac controls if reviewers like you don’t stop saying how ‘pretty neat!’ useless features like ‘acceleration pedal angle’ are.
Nice review! Enthusiast's desire for manuals doesn't seem to carry over to general population as most manual vehicles have sold poorly (WRX is one exception). Nice that Ryan gives a well designed CVT its due and shows it does keep an engine at its maximum power output during acceleration.
I think an issue with manual cars these days is that manuals are absent in cars we would like to see them in. Even Subaru's own crosstrek, they had manual for a bit but only with the wimpy 2.0 engine.
1. Judging from all the idiot in car videos, maybe manual "enthusiast" should focus on learning how to drive. Period. 2. CVT/Automatic is faster and more fuel efficient than manuals. You know what else is fun? dealing with carburetors.
I think it's poor to think that if you want more than what the impreza can offer, that the only option is the WRX, they should just put the 1.8 turbo in the impreza and give it 200hp and 215lbs cvt only and the more aggressive awd and calll it a day. I think it would make a night and day differenc and more people would transfer over to subaru as a brand
Exactly! Not everyone can afford a WRX. Plus not everyone needs are met with a sedan. The 1.8 turbo would be a happy medium for those buyers that need the practicality of a hatchback without sacrificing too much on performance. Plus a model like that would naturally have a higher manual transmission take rate.
I would love if they did that, but I think they don't want people buying a faster, funner Impreza when the WRX/STI exist. I think it's terrible business planning. Give the people what they want!
A deal breaker for me is the CVT and not having a manual option. Yes I know manuals are almost dead but I would be ok with a regular automatic. I know the CVT is more fuel efficient but to gain that extra 1 mpg it really isn't worth dealing with that droning sound.
in Europe we were spared of CVTs because all the base models were manuals and Nissans had a French dual clutch (yeah not any more reliable than a Jatco CVT lol). While DCTs beat CVTs easily. Personally I would love a manual to be available. Honda also offers one as an alternative to their CVT.
Sad to see the manual trans go the way of the dinosaurs. I love Subarus I love their all wheel drive sys I don’t love cvt or automatic transmissions. I drove a 2007 forester w a 5 spd mt for 12 yrs in Nevada and you could not get it stuck anywhere and I used to explore the desert mountains in it. Crazy good car.
Honestly, Subaru should have offered this trim with a manual. They didn’t give us a turbo version, no manual, and won’t listen to consumers about making a hatchback wrx. Subaru is turning into a boring car company slowly but surely. That’s coming from someone who has owned multiple Subarus and still drives one now.
Back when the WRX hatchback was being produced the take rate was about 50/50. The reason Subaru gave why they stopped making the hatchback for the 2015-2022 generation was because they didn't have the budget to produce two variants of the WRX. I have known many former hatchback owners that loved them but would not buy another one in less it was a hatchback. So clearly the market is there for practical hot hatchbacks just that Subaru does not want to invest in them.
@@evoman44 thats eons ago. You have to look at sales data on what is selling currently. I bet you that even if they bring back a hot hatch, crosstrek will out sell wrx 3 to 1. Hell the impreza will still out sell it 2 to 1. Unfortunately us car enthuisatist will suffer no matter what.
@drivingsports Actually there is an argument: Subaru, and others, offered Manual as a more basic option. However, Manual buyers now are enthusiasts. They want a Manual with all the options, not a stripped down model.
I have heard the same thing from many former WRX hatchback owners. I currently have a WRX sedan but I would really like to have the practicality of a hatchback in my next car without having to sacrifice performance.
Yea, I have a 2018 Impreza base. The new RS would be a nice upgrade with the cold weather package, better suspension, larger engine, and BSM/RCTA. However, my 2018 is still running well, and I dont drive much since I retired, so really cant justify trading. The new RS is also a bit expensive. If they put the 2.5L in all models, the "Sport" model would be a better value proposition.
Is the FM radio HD? My 2014 ram truck has HD FM and I like it because it pulls in some of those specialty AM stations which come in real crappy on the AM band.
Ryan, That is very little sidewall for a Subaru. Any news of a Hybrid coming? The new, 42 mpg, Hybrid 'Wannabe Matrix' from Toyota has really shaken up this segment. 😉
I really really love the design and features of this new Impreza, but the only thing keeping me from buying another subaru is the fact that ALL OF THEM HAVE A CVT 😭
Back when the WRX was available as a hatchback the take rate was about 50/50. As much of as those hatchback owners loved their cars they would not consider another one if it was not a hatchback. So even if this was turbo model with around 200hp it would sell well.
@@paulklp8262In what world does anyone drive a CVT WRX. They could twin turbo this and it wouldn't come close to the driving experience of an AWD 6mt turbocharged boxer like the WRX.
I'm liking everything I see about the 2024 Impreza RS. However, it's just not enough of an update for me to want to trade in my 2020 Sport hatchback. The extra 30 horses would be great, but I'm still having a lot of fun after 63k miles.
@@TheSlenderman80 Not if it blows up. Can't squeeze much out of the FB20 before it grenades. I think there's a turbo kit available for it from an Australian company, but it only adds about 30hp. The 2.5 is a better deal.
Great video. I really liked how you got deep into the details of the features you can access through the screen. Do you know if the RS will be available with leather seating or a power driver seat?
I really hope that subaru makes a manual for this car. Subaru is one of those companies that actually listen to their consumers and if we get enough word out, then maybe they will put it out
You're talking about the Subaru of a decade and a half ago. The manual is never coming back, sadly. Subaru enthusiasts are no longer a priority, they want the average buyer now.
I own a 2021 Impreza with a stick shift, and I am very happy with the car. I have never owned a car without a manual transmission, which means my next car won't be an Impreza and maybe not even a Subaru. Here in Canada, once you get heavy rain or ice or snow, the manual transmission feels a lot safer; my wife's Subaru is not manual. And BTW, I have driven the base model and don't agree that it feels cheap, it just comes without a lot of stuff many of us do not want or need
Hey Ryan, I heard that the redesigned Forester (2025 year model released spring 24) will be available with the Rav / Venza hybrid system. Is that true?
I really hate that manufacturers are moving away from having a spare tire. Im already not crazy about temporary spares compared to a full size spare, but not having anything is messed up. Not every flat can be repaired, patched, or plugged. How is it not a liability on companies?
Only problem with the "if you want more performance get a WRX" is that you cant get a hatchback, which both looks better (IMO) and is more practical than the sedan. What I wish Subaru would do is make the 2.5L standard in the Crosstrek/Impreza and add a mildly tuned turbo (210 hp or so) for the Sport or RS models. That would give you a nice middle ground between the modest performing models we have now and the all out performance WRX.
So, about that highway MPG. My 2014 Jeep Patriot gets a solid 35 highway mileage (around 20 city) and has the aero of a brick. That being, said other than the Patriot I've always had Subies and will be going back. If the WRX had a hatch it would be an easy choice, but as is, this looks like a contender. Most of my by myself commuting is on the motorcycle, so MPG isn't the big concern. I also don't care that much about performance, this looks like it drives and handles as well as my bugeye with the 2.5. The ground clearance is pretty much enough for anything I' do (off road and deep backcountry camping are, again, on the bike). The up in price is what's pulling me though, that's overlapping with Forrester territory.
Never thought about this until I had a loaner Impreza over the weekend. The heated seats toggles where so gummed up they took effort to turn on and off. You’re one spilled drink away from ruining a vital component.
I drove a 2022 Crosstrek Sport with 2.5L while my 06 STi was being serviced and didn't think it was too bad. I'm guessing this RS would be similar. While not sporty or anything, that 2.5L was very adequate for merging (I wouldn't want the 2.0L though) RS would have been even a bit fun with manual, which as expected is not offered (but not understandably, as I think the rate rate was like 6-7% for 2023 Impreza 5MT). But seeing how the "RS" would cost 30K, for that money a base WRX is a much better buy unless you have to have the hatch. I wish WRX didn't split off from regular Impreza line. I'd much rather have 2.4T and manual in this hatchback body than the new awful looking WRX with crosstrek fenders.
Seems like a super cool car: would be cool to see the CVT from the WRX GT trim in the RS Impreza (and a standard manual in the GT trim). Feel would get you closer to 80%.
Subaru if you can give use all the basics controls as toggles and knobs, then leave all the special setting in the infotainment system, many of us will be much more appreciative of the system.
For me I actually like the look of the car but the infotainment screen Interface feels like it was designed in 2012. Needs a more premium or newer feeling icons and layout
They should give this the wrx treatment. Drivetrain, suspension, interior and of course the widebody. I can't comprehend why they dumped the hatch wrx. Civic type r, gr corolla and the golf r/gti are all hatchbacks. Wake up Subaru. And I say this as somebody who owns a '22 wrx. I have the magnetite grey which really mutes all the contrasting black bits.
Manual gone for both Impreza and Crosstrek. I was hoping they would add manual with the 2.5l in the new model but nope, they completely removed all manuals. Want to change gears your self got to buy a WRX 😢
Want to see a lot of Imprezas? Go to Northern Canada. It's crazy how many you'll see, but it's also a testament to their reliability, and usability in harsh winter environments.
Excellent and thorough review as always, Ryan. Not only do you test crossovers off-road, you still continue to keep that same level of attention to detail for winding road performance evaluations. I'm extremely salty that the manual transmission has been killed on the Impreza line, especially on the "RS". Unlike a lot of people who have complained about the lack of a manual, I have actually purchased a non-performance Subaru with a manual brand new (though that was 9 years ago). [So the remarks of "yOu wOuLdN'D hAvE bOuGhT iT aNyWaYs" do not apply to me.] The fact that they brought back the RS without a manual transmission pretty much killed a good portion of people who would have considered buying an Impreza RS as a fun fuel-efficient daily driver. I hope that maybe, the people who are interested in driving fun cars could use this Subaru Impreza RS as am economical gateway to possibly buying a WRX or other sporty vehicle.
i'm just curious are there any good dbw manuals ? i'm driving a 2017 corolla IM and its just manual for the sake of it. i thought just my car was trash but i hear horror stories about rev hang in other things.
@@Shishizurui Rev hang is basically inevitable on newer vehicles due to stringent emissions regulations. If you want the rev hang to be gone, you have to get it tuned out. In places that enforce California emissions regulations, this won't fly.
If it just did even a 7 second 0-60, I'd probably buy one. I like so much about this car and I don't expect an Impreza to be fast, but I don't know about more than 8 seconds to 60 in 2023 and later.
I don't disagree with you and I was thinking along the same lines. It's easy to say just get a WRX but if anyone has noticed it's pretty ugly and looks bloated now. not to mention horrendous gas mileage. The size of this vehicle is perfect, IMO, in a world of bloated vehicles. If this would have a 7sec'ish 0-60mph would make me feel like I got the perfect vehicle.
@@pbmcgme176 I really prefer the cargo practicality of the Impreza over the WRX, too. I'd consider a WRX if it were a hatch again. If I'm going to buy a sporty seden, even if I limit that to AWD ones, I don't think it's in my top 5.

Was a bit surprised to see that the driver seat is manual adjustment. No wonder it’s $3k cheaper than the 2024 Crosstrek Limited. The Crosstrek Limited even got powered seat for the front passenger. I don’t understand why Subaru can’t give it a Limited trim level since they are basically the same car. It’s sad that all the car manufacturers put most of their resources on SUVs/crossovers.
Mazda has the right idea with easy to maintain NA motors, no CVT's and Japanese engineering. My only issue is the center consoles reach so far over into your right leg/knee I I had to walk away and all the models are a bit too feminine looking. Hopefully the new I6 rwd Mazda6 will remedy that.
I look at this and I remember my eagle eye manual 2.5 hatchback and wonder why they try to make this special when all of these imprezas and xvs should have just one motor and no 2.0
Such a good looking car. Love hatchbacks and wagons. Subaru does a fantastic job of making practical cars with just enough performance to be a little fun. You won’t win many stop light to stop light races in any stock Subie ( even wrx) they are quick but not fast. But just the handling and feel of Subarus made me fall in love. Very cool cars. I can feel the STI comments coming already. Again a super quick car with amazing handling but there are lots of stock cars that will burn it in a straight line. But even so I would take one over any car any day.
Not sure why someone would forgo a Crosstrek with better ground clearance for this Impreza? And, not sure why the WRX can't be a hatchback like the Impreza & Crosstrek? Wish Subaru & other brands would adopt center armrests like Honda uses for Ridgelines.
regarding the A/C trickery... pretty neat but does it passenger(s) in the rear if only a driver is in the car? EG Uber use or driving a child under age 12.
The trunk should be bigger, especially that Toyota new offering is decent and competitive with Subaru’s offering. I’m a Forester owner, so I just want them to succeed
Has Subaru done anything to address the IIHS Poor Side Impact Crash Test Rating for the previous year? Body looks the same, wondering what if any Subaru did to address the poor rating?
I like this impreza and im a wrx owner but i think for the price point i feel the mazda 3 hatchback carbon turbo is a much better buy for close to the same price.
The HvAC detecting passengers is a nice feature that has been on the RAV4 for a few years. The Rav4 also detects the sun and blows more AC on the passengers in the sun. I wonder if the Subaru copied that feature too.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 Not all car enthusiast can afford a WRX either nor does a sedan fit their needs. So clearly their is a gap in the market for an adorable sporty hatchback. The WRX wagon would be my ideal car. Even if it became available in the US with only a CVT I would still buy it because I could still do a manual transmission conversion.
I sat in one in the NY auto show yesterday. I thought at first that I wanted a GTI, but I sat in this and it felt very spacious. I’m not a car guy, I just know how to do maintenance like changing my brakes, brake discs, oil, and other fluids. This seems like it will be a fun car to drive. Traffic by me sucks so I personally don’t care for a manual. I drive a 2014 Nissan Altima that has given me zero issues and people say that it’s CVT is amongst the least reliable in the industry.
Should’ve made this with a manual and turbo, and add hood scoop. Love my wrx i just want a hatchback for space for my dog more and kid in future. Do you know what color blue that is? Is it the same as the 2023 ocean blue Pearl?
I like the size of the screen and wireless car play/apple play but I don't like the integrated climate controls. Without the upgraded infotainment system the entry system looks odd and cheap with the two separate areas on the screen. The electronic parking brake and swivel headlights also seem like potential problems in the future that could be expensive to fix if they break. Not a fan of start/stop either. Definitely has a few upgrades over the current model but many of those upgrades seem like they come at the expense of simplicity and potential reliability. If they kept the mechanical climate controls (or at least not integrated to the screen) and kept the mechanical parking brake I could just deactivate the start stop and hope the headlights don't stop working . With those changes this would be a perfect upgrade if it had just a bit more power (around 200 hp) and a manual trans option.
This is an RS, but "If you want a manual transmission, get the WRX" - which, of course, is *not* a *hatchback* (and gets poor fuel economy). Thanks Subaru!
@evoman44 than get a used one performance cars are hobbyist novelty cars. normal people get no benefit from them want a hobby specialty car pay specialist prices. This is a car for commuters not for enthusiasts. Cut and dry the wrx and the impreza have the same speed limit on the highway.
The RS is GTI money. You would really need to have a need or desire for AWD to justify the RS. I really want to like this. Fuel econ isn't too bad. The 2023 Prius is faster and the same price in base it seems. Struggling to see who this car is for given the other options.

Why?
the 2.5L models (so this RS) is made in USA
really high quality analysis and truly exact opinions. loved it
Ryan, Subaru is never gonna take the L regarding the lack of physical hvac controls if reviewers like you don’t stop saying how ‘pretty neat!’ useless features like ‘acceleration pedal angle’ are.
Side note: This CVT ONLY gives you maximum power output during acceleration from a dead stop. It sucks.
Still should be an option on some vehicles. Maybe make it order only, but it would sell.
no the CVT is crap on subarus. its ancient af
Subaru makes a 1.8 turbo engine??
If the WRX just looked like this I'd totally buy one
You can buy aftermarket color matched paint wheel arches for 1k an they look amazing
just get a levorg bro
"...driving through a Windows 95 wallpaper." You, sir, nailed it. 😂
That’s coming from someone who has owned multiple Subarus and still drives one now.
unfortunately mom and pops will beat enthusiasts everytime. 6MT and turbo just don't sell so it is what it is.
People didn't buy them. Not much of an argument against that.
If they kept making a WRX hatchback, I would be a repeat buyer.
I have heard the same thing from many former WRX hatchback owners. I currently have a WRX sedan but I would really like to have the practicality of a hatchback in my next car without having to sacrifice performance.
As the owner of a 2008 base impreza hatch. I would totally get this
Yea, I have a 2018 Impreza base.
I don't think this is enough of an upgrade from my '21 Crosstrek Sport, which is fantastic.
I was looking at the Impreza and crosstrek. I think the extra ground clearance would make going for the crosstrek the way to go.
Check out iihs crash test rating
It's not your Crosstrek Sport, it's just the Crosstrek Sport. Yours is different?
Is the FM radio HD? My 2014 ram truck has HD FM and I like it because it pulls in some of those specialty AM stations which come in real crappy on the AM band.
Ryan, That is very little sidewall for a Subaru. Any news of a Hybrid coming? The new, 42 mpg, Hybrid 'Wannabe Matrix' from Toyota has really shaken up this segment. 😉
A hybrid is coming, but I’m. It sure it will be Impreza. Might be crosstrek.
I really really love the design and features of this new Impreza, but the only thing keeping me from buying another subaru is the fact that ALL OF THEM HAVE A CVT 😭
This would put the WRX out of sales if it came with a turbo. I was really hoping for a turbo option on this though.
Back when the WRX was available as a hatchback the take rate was about 50/50. As much of as those hatchback owners loved their cars they would not consider another one if it was not a hatchback. So even if this was turbo model with around 200hp it would sell well.
Subaru wouldn’t do that. I was hoping it had the new 2.4T as well.
@@AdventureeX That would make it just a WRX then.
@@evoman44 I would absolutely buy one with a turbo at 200hp. Subaru is always hamstringing themselves with their models.

Any oil consumption issues with these new 2.5L engine
I really hope that subaru makes a manual for this car. Subaru is one of those companies that actually listen to their consumers and if we get enough word out, then maybe they will put it out
You're talking about the Subaru of a decade and a half ago. The manual is never coming back, sadly. Subaru enthusiasts are no longer a priority, they want the average buyer now.
Zero chance.
Really wish they at least offered a manual, guess I'll be keeping my '08 impreza hatch alive.
I wasnt impressed by the WRX. Instead I went with a 22BRZ and now have the 24RS on the way as well.
Hey Ryan,
I heard that the redesigned Forester (2025 year model released spring 24) will be available with the Rav / Venza hybrid system. Is that true?
I really hate that manufacturers are moving away from having a spare tire. Im already not crazy about temporary spares compared to a full size spare, but not having anything is messed up. Not every flat can be repaired, patched, or plugged. How is it not a liability on companies?
if parts fit cross-platform like subaru typically does, this could be a cool option for an sti swapped hot hatch
I see you've never heard of the woes of wiring.
@@ginkumo12 not saying it's easy and lots of people will do it. But somebody will, and it will be cool
BRZ motor + 6 speed manual
That would be the perfect combo!
My 2002 2.5 RS doesn’t even have cruise control! Cars have changed a lot
Dude, it's really nice for "economy" class.
12 V socket is very close to the drink holders. And it seems it'd funnel the liquid into it.
While not sporty or anything, that 2.5L was very adequate for merging (I wouldn't want the 2.0L though)
RS would have been even a bit fun with manual, which as expected is not offered (but not understandably, as I think the rate rate was like 6-7% for 2023 Impreza 5MT).
All it needs is a manual and I’m sure many people like myself would have purchased one instead I’ll hold on to my current 2011 Impreza outback sport!
If you really want a performance hatchback the Base Dodge Hornet has 90 more HP, torque vectoring awd, and a sequential transmission for 30k.
But then, you get an Italian car instead of a Japanese made car
Just give us a 1.8 or 2.0 turbo Impreza. NA boxer with CVT it’s a asthmatic engine
Surprisingly, the neighborhood where I live has many Imprezas. But very few Foresters.
Is it ok to drive it (or any subaru) in Sport mode pretty much all the time? Can it cause anything to noticeably fail prematurely?
It won't affect the longevity of anything. Sport all the way.
His (unscientific) zero to sixty times tend to be just a bit slower from some of the magazines reviews.
We use a GPS system for 0-60 times with a 1-ft roll out on public streets. (We do several runs off-camera then do one for the camera.) Magazines use faster surfaces and longer roll-outs for slower times. You can see how this compares against other vehicles we've tested here: www.drivingsports.com/test-vehicle-data/ (Click Sort >> 0-60) We haven't added the RS yet, but will be adding it in this coming week.

Powered seat is an option for these
wish it had a manual, im getting a gr86 but for winter purposes i wouldve gotten this
Mazda has the right idea with easy to maintain NA motors, no CVT's and Japanese engineering. My only issue is the center consoles reach so far over into your right leg/knee I I had to walk away and all the models are a bit too feminine looking. Hopefully the new I6 rwd Mazda6 will remedy that.
I look at this and I remember my eagle eye manual 2.5 hatchback and wonder why they try to make this special when all of these imprezas and xvs should have just one motor and no 2.0
Is there an aftermarket turbo or supercharger for this?
I think Impreza looks more sporting then crosstrek

This is essentially a AWD Scion TC. Comes in manual, 180ish hp and tq, cheap, sporty but economical, hatchback, likely going to be reliable.
Is there any impreza optioned for vents in the second row ??
This is an RS, but "If you want a manual transmission, get the WRX" - which, of course, is *not* a *hatchback* (and gets poor fuel economy). Thanks Subaru!
