I'm gonna be honest. Hearing Lights sing these words:
"I'm sorry, I can't find the old me. The one you met all those years ago. I'm sorry, I can't be steady. I've been changing after all those nights alone" and "Stop trying to hold on forever" really, weirdly feels like she's talking to me....as a fan. As a listener. It made me cry when I thought about it.
I have been a huge Lights fan since I first heard of her back in 2010. She's always been on my top 5 list of favorite artists. I knew and sang along with all her songs. They helped me get through high school crushes, college, and more. But as she's evolved as an artist, she's grown into a style that I don't really vibe with. Too much profanity, edginess, and whatnot for my personal tastes, and it's far and away from her old music... but I still respect and love her so much. I really just want her to go back to that old sound (which, this song ironically sounds like her older music), her old lyrics, her old self.. but that's not how it works. And I shouldn't want that. She can be the artist she wants to be and I have to respect that. I will love and admire her and her work for a very, very long time regardless.
I definitely agree. It’s hard to enjoy lights new music. Especially off her pep album. But when she does collabs with edm artists I remember why I loved her music in the first place.
Pep was the first album of hers that I skipped and won’t buy because of the content but I hope she continues to grow and find success.
@@thepennytheologian I know the feeling. Pep is also the first album of hers I've never enjoyed or purchased. I like Okay Okay and Salt and Vinegar but that's about it. I mean, she always had tongue-in-cheek or just cheeky parts in her song lyrics, but her new stuff is just too much for me. But I see it as like.. that friend you were close to in high school and now that you've graduated, you'd both gone down different paths, but you still appreciate them and treasure the days you spent together and the memories you have. 💜

I remember crying to The Listening and Heavy Rope when I felt down or was going through something. I remember how perfect listening to Speeding felt while I was leaving my toxic art college for the last time and watched the sign grow smaller in the sideview mirror. I remember tearing up over Running With the Boys, thinking about playing with the neighborhood kids.
I miss the magic and comfort of her songs.
This song does recapture that for me, but it's not like it was. :c

Realistic ending, the young Prince instead of tending to his duty of looking after his people, spent all his time white knighting... so, like any good father, he sent his son into exile to personally reflect and possibly go his own way, while the siren was dealt with and sent back to her people. She never loved him, she was only using him to gain leverage over the King.

Zoomer here. Listening to this after a few years of marriage that ended up with her having an assault charge (she called the police after a fight and then they charged her) and cheating. Where it was toxic that she thought she could make me better but ended up fucking me more. I'm now homeless from the situation but haha, tough times
I know your trying to be funny, but that is a very simplistic way of thinking about the lyrics. :) It can also be viewed as taking a deep look inside yourself. Such as, what have I accomplished or lost and what things can I improve in my life. Music is a personal journey that ties us all together, yet affects us differently.
Some of the most privileged people have pretty fucked up lives.
I know this is going to come across like I am a hater, but I am not: i have been listening to SL for almost a decade. I have felt like all of the word choruses have had diversity but all of the instrumentals sound the same to me. This just reminds me of Island, or Dreamin', or or or. I miss SL's adlib style of dubstep/trap.
