    This was the best short program of the night.

      That's the problem with the old judging system, and the problem with figure skating overall. There was no way the judges would have put her above Yamaguchi. It was bias and not judging accordingly. Fair and square this was better than Yamaguchi because the technical was more difficult as she joined it with sequences, and then the artistry - not a typical or cliché type of artistry and music. Yamaguchi was too cookie cutter and completely her coach running the show.

      Totally agree, but for slightly different reasons. Kristi's lutz - while superp in the long program - hardly got off the ground in her short program; it was tilted in the air and the following double toe was also weak. Here, Nancy's triple lutz/double toe combination was impeccable, with great inflow, outflow, height and speed. Not only that, Nancy's entire short program here was skated with great power, speed, conviction, and ease.

    What a great performance from Nancy. She is amazing! The height she got on the Triple Lutz was incredible, then repeated the height with the double toe loop! Just for the record, she WAS the winner of the '94 Gold Medal. She absoultely beat Oksana.

    • @GGE47
      @GGE47 4 года назад +1

      Oksana had 5 communist judges to help her along in '94. the first time that has ever happened, a majority. No wonder she made mistakes that didn't count to them, but did to the Western judges. Nancy skated a more difficult program than Oksana and pulled them off with near perfection. She got the same marks in the artistic impression. Six 5.9s and three 5.8s.Canadian and British judges had Chen Lu the silver, and Oksana the bronze. It wasn't really that close.

      I totally agree. Nancy was skating great at these Olympics. I think most her trouble in the long was due to the beautiful - but very uncomfortable to skate in - white dress. Otherwise she was skating also with good speed and power in the long program. Nancy skated two wonderful programs at the '94 Olympics and deserved to win, but I think during the '92 Olympics was when she was actually at the peak of her athletic power.

    Good description of Nancy's skating. As one astute British commentator remarked, she had a very different appearance on the ice from any of the other women. You can see it just in the way she strokes across the ice, carrying herself with that beautiful posture while building up momentum for big jumps and spins.

      My feelings exactly. This is actually my favorite Nancy Kerrigan short program of all I have seen. And in the long program, I think she had to pay a high price for wearing the beautiful, white dress. I have since heard her say that it made it very difficult for her to do her triple lutz. We see how effortless that jump was for her here in the short. Nancy was skating with a lot of speed and power in these '92 Olympics.

      @jorgebonilla2234 6 лет назад +3

      She complained and whined for a very short time frame after narrowly (and controversially) losing the Olympics. It’s hard to come to terms with. Since then, however, she’s been nothing but a class act. She shouldn’t be defined by her attitude after her loss. The girl was literally assaulted right before the Olympics and still managed to deliver two gold worthy performances while serving 1994 Vera wang winter collection looks

    • @valmacclinchy
      @valmacclinchy Год назад

      @@jorgebonilla2234 she had a bruise on her knee, which healed quickly.
      Oksana skated with far worse injuries, even requiring Olympic doctor approved cortizone injections. And Oksana rightfully won Gold.
      Then Nancy acted like a spoiled brat on camera because Oksana (age 16) was emotional about winning Gold.

    @fusock Up thru 1994, the winter and summer games had been held the same year, every 4 years. 1994 was the first time they "staggered" the games-- alternating winter and summer. to manage this they just moved the winter games ,giving the winter athletes a once-only chance of having their next games be only 2 years away. from then on, it was back to the 4 year cycle. Winter Olympics since 1976 were 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010. Summer games no change at all.

    @russianskatingfan Very true. She had bad draws always with the OP, same thing with the 1991 worlds. Harding skated first in 1991 and still got second in the short. Kristi deserved first in the 1991 worlds op, but here Nancy really had the complete program with superior elements in every way.

  • @russianskatingfan
    @russianskatingfan 14 лет назад +1

    @metsdudenj you have to remember she skated very early, she was the first contender of any sort to skate. She skated before Harding, Yamaguchi, and Ito, and Harding and Ito had triple axel combos planned (also before Chen or Bonaly). So there is no way the judges could have given out 5.9s. Yamaguchi lucked out to skate alot later on.

  • @Will_3000
    @Will_3000 10 лет назад +7

    This was the one and only time I truly believe Nancy should have been placed over Kristi. It would've been close, but she skated a stronger short program in terms of required elements and was almost an artistic equal. As many others have said, had she skated later in the event, she maybe, just maybe, would have been placed ahead of Kristi. If the long programs went the same, she would have won the silver, instead of the bronze. Her total of 3.5 would have been lower than Midori's 4.

    • @russianskatingfan
      @russianskatingfan 8 лет назад

      +Figurski81 I agree she deserved to win the short, but her long never deserved 3rd place so she still didnt deserve the silver.

      +roger leblond It might surprise you that I agree, haha. If I were a judge, I would have placed Chen Lu ahead of Nancy in the long. Nancy had too many glaring mistakes. I guess my main point was that Nancy deserved to win the short, she was better than Kristi in this portion of the event.

    There is a coolness in the skating, but I don´think boring. Her moves are very modern, angular, muscular, and sleek. Not out of the balletic tradition nor hyper-feminine (the dainty hand/willowy arms thing). It´s an image of how a modern woman can be graceful (not to mention beautiful) but not fragile. I´m sorry no one picked up on the style. I like it very much.

    @fusock Hey fusock -- up until 1992, both the summer and winter Olympics were held every four years, in the same year. After 1992, they decided to hold an Olympics every two years - so they held the next winter games in 1994, and then every 4 years (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, etc.) The summer games kept their original schedule of every four years (92, 96, 2000, 04, 08, 2012, etc.). I believe they divided the years to help keep interest in the Olympics and to make $. Hope this helps!

    @The123musicals I don't think she was overrated at all because she was a terrific technical skater...but boring? Could be, yes. She was phenomenal when she came on the scene, but the problem is her style didn't change. If you've seen one routine, you've seen them all. She did her one thing very, very well. She didn't experiment with choreography and push herself.

    @snowballwannabe I think her choice of music may have affected her medal placement. The music is an original composition by another skater and IMO it's terrible. The music doesn't invoke any emotion at all. Sometimes it's better to go with the classics. The audience, judges and the skater often connect more with something familiar like Swan Lake or Carmen.

    • @sbe79
      @sbe79 4 года назад

      This music was awful. It seemed like it was reminiscent of something by the composer Kitaro, often used by Japanese skaters, but it just wasn't any good. Just a strange collection of electronic noise without melody. The Lutz combo was stunning, the 2A was maybe the best she'd ever done. The music forced this to be not a winner.

    • @genednomyar3383
      @genednomyar3383 3 года назад +1

      Nah, this music was wonderful, and it helped present Nancy as sophisticated, and slightly avant-garde. If you want to see her in a slightly softer, and more traditional style, watch her 1995 performance of Run to You (sung by Whitney Houston).

    @firmingitup you are right. And as much as I don't like her at all, I think she should have won in Norway. Nancy was always talked up by the press and skating folk because of her looks and because of her demeanor...but she rarely delivered the goods. Then when she did - no reward.

    Nancy was always so much better in the short program...better choreography, music, etc...her LP this season wasn't so good. Same with Lillehamer. But her SP at Lillehamer was one of the best ever and I don't even like her.

    • @genednomyar3383
      @genednomyar3383 3 года назад

      I personally always loved her '92 Olympic long program as a program. And I loved her skating of it here even with the flaws. She always had - what Dick Button called - wonderful tension in her skating. Her skating building up to her jumps created great tension so that when - and if - she landed her jumps there was a wonderful resolution, rather like a 2/3 suspension creating a disonance that resolves to a consonance in music. However, in her long program here, she had several technical problems - I believe - due to her beautiful (but very uncomfortable to skate in) white dress.

    • @genednomyar3383
      @genednomyar3383 3 года назад

      I also loved her long program at Lilihammer. She skated with an underlying peace and joy in that program. It was wonderful to see!!!

  • @snowballwannabe
    @snowballwannabe 13 лет назад +4

    What a boring nonsense disconnected music choice. She should have won this FS no matter what, but I guess judges back then always considered both Kerrigan and Harding as Yamaguchi's bridesmaids.. which is annoying because they both could break Kristi's ass technically n even artistically at any moment during that period.

    • @sbe79
      @sbe79 4 года назад

      Most of her spins were typically weak, honestly, her entire career. Her combo spin here was a bit of a flail. Interesting positions but not the most outstanding speed and mostly just variations on a camel. The layback was awful. Spins were always, ALWAYS, her worst feature.

    • @genednomyar3383
      @genednomyar3383 3 года назад

      She had a disk (disc) in her spine that was damaged that prevented her from having the best layback position. It may have also caused difficulty with other spins; I am not sure. But for me, personally, her spins in the long program at Lillihammer were just fine. I loved her scratch spin at the end, and how she was able to complete it in perfect timing with the climax of the music

      @@metsdudenj I agree totally. She skated wonderfully in this short program, and I loved it and was so happy for her. I also really liked her long program, and I think her problem with some of the jumps was due in part to her beautiful white dress that was uncomfortable and difficult for her to jump in. I heard her state just recently that she couldn't do her triple lutz in it. I'm glad she wore the gold one in 94 at Lillihammer. She seemed much more comfortable in it.

      @genednomyar3383 3 года назад

      @@alexgerdt2278 Your comments are so untrue. This is the best short program of the event. Kristi's lutz in the short had hardly any height and was tilted in the air, and her double toe on the end was not very good either. Nancy's program here was skated with wonderful speed, security, and power. The commentators here got it just right. And even in her flawed long program, she landed a triple flip, triple toe, triple loop, triple salchow, and second triole toe. The beautiful white dress was very difficult to skate in and was the reason she missed her tripple lutz, and - I think - may have also played a part in why she she had trouble with the second triple of the triple/triple cobination. At any rate, she still landed four beautiful, clean triples and another triple toe with a hand down, plus a gorgeous double axel. Kristi deserved the gold on the basis of her long program (her triple lutz/triple toe in the long was superb) but Nancy out skated her in the short. Her movements were slightly avant- garde and sophisticated for this time, but not stiff. They were precise, and interpreted the music very well.
