This song is actually a lullaby to her daughter Maya, who is Maya Rudolph the comedian on Saturday Night Live. Near the end of the song, Minnie repeats Maya's name.
Back Down Memory Lane is such a sad, yet happy sounding song. If you know her story. When she made that song, she had been diagnosed with cancer and knew that she only had a short time left to live. Also, the person playing the guitar in the video if this song is her husband. Edit: This song is also about her husband.
Just thinking about that song/video brings tears to my eyes. She couldn't move one of her arms, and when she sings, "I don't want to go" and "Save me" I can't take it. What a loss. Gone way too soon. RIP, Minnie.
Also, Minnie Ripperton was a treasure. The term you are referring to is the whistle register. I remember the day she died. I was in third grade and they announced it on the radio. Fun fact: her daughter is comedic actress Maya Rudolph.
I love Minnie Riperton her voice was one of a kind. I have heard voice coaches say that she sings in a range called whistle. I believe that. May she rest in peace 🙏🏾🙏🏾
She wrote this song for her daughter Maya Rudolph. Maya stars in Saturday Night Live. She mentions Maya in the song. I was about 14 and walking through the Gallery Mall in Philadelphia Pa when it was announced that she had lost her battle with cancer. But read her stats, she is known for having one of the highest octaves in R&B and most other genres. Her husband, herself and Stevie wonder wrote and composed this song. Gone to soon RIP Minnie Ripperton
The male version of Minnie Riperton is Bobby DeBarge from the group Switch The song I Call Your Name was written by Bobby DeBarge and Gregory Williams One of my all time favorite ❤️ songs because my mom played it over and over when I was a child. Anyways, Bobby DeBarge had a beautiful voice but a trauma fueled childhood . RIP Bobby😢
I loved how the dad said he pictured that stolen precious moment shared between husband and wife, in the morning before the kids get up. Those are priceless moments
I saw her perform this song acapella before her premature passing and man, "it actually sounded better without music." That is how beautiful this girls voice was -- really unmatched by any artist singing in that highest octave range, since. 💞💕
Believe it or not, the unsurpassable Minnie's live versions of this most beautiful of songs, are even more amazing than the studio recording. Seeing this young man's love of listening to it, is an absolute joy to behold.
This song always makes me tear up especially since Minnie dedicated this song to her daughter (whom a lot of us know is actress Maya Rudolph) and ended up dying at a young age of cancer. Maya didn't really get to know her mother. What a beautiful song. Minnie had a really lovely voice. She still has the best whistle register to me (yes I even prefer hers over Mariah's). Minnie is underrated. What a lovely voice.
Love this song. I comment on a lot of the content on this channel, I love these videos for not only Kai’s great taste in hip hop, but for another reason as well. My dad and I shared the love of music with each other, if not anything else on earth. This year is the 10 year anniversary of his passing, and I wish I had some sort of project like this I could look back on. This is something so precious to have, and I love the insight from both of you on each track. also, dad better GET TO ITTTT with that Minnie impression at the end!! Hahaha ❤❤
Like Dad, I had heard this song in the 70s but didn't pay any attention to it. At my age I was "too cool" to listen to such a sappy song. Then near 2010 there was a TV commercial with legendary NFL running back Jerome Bettis hyping up a huge crowd in a football stadium, ready for loud driving music to rev up the crowd for the game, and blasting out of the stadium's speakers was this song, soft and beautiful which is the opposite of what you'd expect. Bettis' face was very funny as in "WTF???!!!" and the crowd was stunned, then Minnie sings the super-high-pitch section and Bettis' WTF face was further focused on. That made me search for the song on RUclips and it's great.
Not sure if anyone mentioned this but the Hip Hop community fell in love with Minnie Riperton because A Tribe Called Quest sampled her song “Inside My Love”. The A Tribe Called Quest song was called “Lyrics To Go” from the Midnight Marauders album. I recommend both songs even the albums.
I'm 44 years old and I've been singing this song every since I could utter words. My mother told me that I wouldn't stop singing this song as well as Earth, Wind and Fire's "Reasons" and Denice Williams' "Free". LOL
Duuuude those Parliament albums are amazing! I'm surprised they were in the thrift store. Minnie sang in four octave D₃ to F♯₇ coloratura soprano range. She was crowned Queen of the whistle register. Minnie also went by the alias name, Andrea Davis when she recorded the song "Lonely Girl".
I used to sing this to my son when he was little. Well, I'd try. I sounded awful, but he was so small he didn't care 😀 LOVE this song. I'd sing it ti him and he was born in 1995 so, it's a much loved song that's still in circulation and gathering more fans ❤️
Minnie Riperton is one of the few to have what is called a whistle register which is the high note she hits. At the end she’s singing “Maya Maya Maya” which is her daughter’s name ❤ Hip Hop sampled a lot from Parliament Funkadelic. George Clinton and Bootsy Collins are some of the best funk musicians.
"Lovin' You" is a song recorded by American singer Minnie Riperton from her second studio album, Perfect Angel (1974). It was written by Riperton and her husband, Richard Rudolph, produced by Rudolph and Stevie Wonder, and released as the album's fourth single on January 18, 1975. The song peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 on April 5, 1975. Additionally, it reached number two on the UK Singles chart, and number three on the Billboard R&B chart. In the US, it ranked number 13 on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1975. On April 8, 1975, "Lovin' You" was certified gold in the United States by the RIAA for sales in excess of 1,000,000 units. It was also certified silver in the UK by BPI on May 1, 1975, for sales of 250,000 units. Source Wikipedia
Love this song! I watched a documentary about Minnie Riperton and learned so much I didn't know about her. She was in a band prior to going solo, called Rotary Connection. They were a psychedelic band and one of my favorite songs they did is a cover of Sunshine of Your Love, Minnie sounds amazing on it.
RIP minnie riperton one of the greatest singers of all times ,yes that is what is known as a whistle regester, she was one of the few people whoca reach that level. FYI the actress ma Rudolph is is her daughter.
What's crazy impressive about Minnie is that she not only has that incredible whistle register, but she clearly also has great control of her voice in that register. She doesn't hunt for notes, she can introduce vibrato, etc. I've heard people who can hit notes like that before, but I've never heard anyone control them like Minnie could. Her voice was one of a kind.
If you love that one, you will love Back Down Memory Lane by her as well. Can't remember if it is on the same album. Beautiful Queen she is and will always be. Son was really into it, LOVE! May you experience that type of love one day. We (African Americans) had a lot of beautiful Love and Love making songs back in the day, that's how we got through life difficulties. Music definitely plays a part in people lives, firm believer of it.
For a more sensual lovemaking song by Minnie there is "Inside My Love" and "Can You Feel What I'm Saying" among other songs. You guys should do some Barry White since your Dad did an impromptu impression of him 😆🤣
I was in love with this song when I was in High School. It made my heart swell. It's awesome to know that you found it beautiful too, 30+ years later! Maya Rudolph (comedian) is her daughter.
I was born in '64 so I was around 9 or 10 when theis song came out. She was the supreme Queen of Whistle-Tone. Now we have Mariah Carey but Minnie will always shine. We lost her so soon and hearing her music is always a reminder of the pure beauty of her voice.
I got to experience this feeling. Actually in the last week of November 2023. Spent a memorable morning with someone and I felt this. Saw the sun glowing through the windows while we made love for hours. That memory will stick with me forever. No music playing but damn this song plays. Woof!! What a hot morning what we make is just beautiful
Please review ‘Inside My Love’ by Minnie Riperton… One of my favourites by her. A classic that has been sampled afew times and also the lyrics are pretty dirty when you listen closely lol
You know Minnie is comedian Mya Rudolph’s mother. Fun fact. You guys should start listening to some of the rap songs and songs they’re sampled from. That’s an education in itself!! Keep up the good work.
If you want to really be blown away, do yourselves a favor, by listening to the 1975 live performance of this on RUclips. It’s one of the greatest things my ears have ever heard.
I feel you guys. A beautiful voice a beautiful girl a haunting song combined to make one of the greatest classics of the golden 70s. Magnificent performance here she did. Unbeknownst to Minnie Riperton, she unintendedly established the gold standard on which future "whistle-blowers" who wish to cover the song will be measured.
So an inoffensive piece of music to anyone that listens to it. It can anybody is a beautiful description of this song. Expanding on that thought, a response to Maxwell's Whenever Wherever Whatever would be wonderful.
She was a singer/songwriter along with her husband Richard Rudolph. Her music catalog is full of so many wonderful songs. She was a really talented artist.
A classically trained vocalist in opera , Minnie joined a Funk/Soul Group in the 60s named, The Rotary Connection. Amazing music that was revolutionary then. She then went solo and released a few albums. This was produced by Stevie Wonder after her voice caught his Ear. In the Video she is joined by her husband, guitar player , musician and fellow collaborator. They had 2 children (girl and boy) . As many have Stated her daughter is acclaimed Comedian/actress Maya Rudolph (SNL , BRIDESMAIDS) Sadly Minnie succumbed to breast cancer in the early 80s at around the age of 34.
The first parliament record I grew up listening to my mother played that album often and she also took me to their underwater boogie concert when I was young. I think y'all are going to love the parliament records.
I love this song. My favorite by her is "Inside My Love." I didn't know that it was really about until I was an adult. Made me have S.H.E when I realized why my parents laughed at me when I would sing along when I was a child.
I'm from DC, rooted in NC and we travel there often. As a child, I would sit in the back of my Mom's Honda in pain listening to her music trying to hear my walkman playing BIG and Jay. But this was one of the songs I would take my headphones off for, just to hear those insane whistle notes 😩 It's amazing.
I greatly enjoy watching you gentlemen interact and review all this music from a broad swath of the past 50 years. Also, thank you for listening to national treasure, Minnie Riperton. All around awesome! May Minnie rest in Peace.
I read recently...don't know how accurate the info is...that the presence of the tweeting birds was actually accidental, that was caught during the recording, but they left in the sounds. It just added to the purity and gentleness of the song.
Now Dad!😳You should know this song like the back of your hand -- It was one of the only songs that crossed over, though she was labeled as an R&B artist becuz of her melanated skin . Any how "son," you can hit Dad off with a follow-up to his era featuring Deniece Williams; any song by her from "Free" to "Silly." -- Yeah, then you'll be pulling out the big guns
If you love Lovin You by Minnie, you guys will lover Silent Night by Minnie. Minnie trained in opera as a teen and decided to sing pop music in her mid-teens, she's a coloratura soprano. Minnie's husband Richard Rudolph is playing the acoustic guitar in this song Lovin You.
Welcome to the P-Funk universe. You are both in for a wild ride! And now that Kai is digging into Minnie Riperton, "Inside My Love" is a must. It's been sampled on several classic hip-hop songs.
Great choice. Also, I see the Parliament album cover. Complete fan, one of the best band ever created. George Clinton and his crew created an incredible sound that has impacted black music in rnb, jazz and hip-hop. Check also his other band Funkadelic, same band different record label.
Before coming to comment section on this vid I wondered if the chat would be flooded with people saying this song is featured in a early season episode of South Park. They also talk about that high pitch note she songs needing it to crack the glass on a security dome.
Listen to MInnie's, "Baby This Love I Have", "Can You Feel What I'm Saying" (live version) and "Island In The Sun". Also listen to the beautiful songbird of soul Deniece Williams sing "Free", "Touch Me Again" and "The Paper", the oh so sweet flower of soul Syreeta sing "'Cause We've Ended As Lovers", "She's Leaving Home" and "With You I'm Born Again". Deniece, Syreeta, and Minnie all sang background vocals for the great Stevie Wonder and Deniece sang background vocals on Minnie's "Perfect Angel" album aslo. Stevie produced Syreeta's albums, they composed many songs together, were married and even had a child together. Enjoy! ❤
FUN FACT: At the end of the song Minnie Riperton, sings Maya, Maya, Maya, Maya. Maya Rudolph is her daughter and the actress from SNL Saturday Night Live and other movies.
I use to have a big ol floor model re ord player with the mix on it.. we would scratch this song to make it a dance track lol. Was fun as a kid in the 90s
The question was is there a bass- I'm suprised that question didn't promote looking at the liner notes contained on the album. She had a really organic voice and three octaves. Maya Randolph on SNL is her daughter.
Please listen to Minnie’s first album, “Come To My Garden”. It’s absolute perfection. Parliament is 🔥🔥 so many rap/hip hop songs have sampled them amongst other genres
This song is actually a lullaby to her daughter Maya, who is Maya Rudolph the comedian on Saturday Night Live. Near the end of the song, Minnie repeats Maya's name.

The high note that she hits at the end of the chorus is called a whistle tone
Daddy was back in time singing like he was 😂😂😂 you head and sang!!!!
I have Minnie on vinyl…amazing!!!
Very cool
Enjoy! ❤
Beautiful her daughter is actress and comedian Maya Rudolph.
Never heard this version with that ending. Nice. That wasn't the air play version. -Great that you two can share music together.
The question was is there a bass- I'm suprised that question didn't promote looking at the liner notes contained on the album. She had a really organic voice and three octaves. Maya Randolph on SNL is her daughter.
I recommend playing Deniece Williams’s “Free” or “ Silly”
She was gone too soon... Rest in Peace, Minnie Riperton.
Fantastic! Her whistle is awesome! I was in middle school.
I love you review. Minnie í missed. Truly Angelic voice. ❤❤❤❤
Please listen to Minnie’s first album, “Come To My Garden”. It’s absolute perfection. Parliament is 🔥🔥 so many rap/hip hop songs have sampled them amongst other genres
Since i saw that video im playing this song nonstop ...💕😃👍
