      I got my Border Collie puppy 3 weeks ago. I did the touch practice everyday for the first week and then because he seemed ok with touch we have been working on other things. The last few days when we are outside and I reach for him, he takes a few steps away from me. I don't think it is because he doesn't want to be touched, I think he wants me to chase him which I know I shouldn't do. I have begun doing the touch training again using high value treats. He is 10 weeks old. Has anyone else experienced regression of a training that you thought you successfully accomplished?

    I just wish I found your videos before getting my puppy, or shortly after. You're the best trainer on RUclips hands down! My pup is now 16 weeks old and despite trying regularly (alas, not every day - so many things need to be done every day it's so hard to do them all) we've made very little progress with the dremel tool, and it's always a huge struggle to her paws wiped after a walk unless she stares at food in my hand (but we have to do that 10 or more times a day). She at least seems to enjoy brushing, though. We'll take a step back and try to take it slower and more regularly.

    • @kikopup

      Well if it makes you feel better... Some dogs just have a tendency to be worried about their feet, so even if you worked on it at 8 weeks, the anxieties come back around 16 weeks anyway, and its like starting from scratch. You might notice they come back again around 6 months to a year, but when the dog if an adult, you wont see set backs as much. Just keep at it. Its a bummer. But every dog has their issues. I find with sensitivities like that making the nail trimming more frequent in smaller steps prevents the set backs

    This is great. We are doing tiny increments and building on what he can do. Asking for other behaviors he knows is a brilliant plan alone with the chew toy for duration…This information makes me feel like we are making progress. He’s calm sometimes but gets overly excited in a happy way easily. I do just a couple nails and brush a little. He’s still a such a baby. I tried playing with him with the grooming tools but he got over excited by them during play:) So now I wait til he’s sleeping or a flop tired. Going to focus on this whole video today step by step along with leave it as he’s started mugging a bit doing the chain when he mugs backs off and waits for a treat. So have to see when exactly to do each step again…I think because he suddenly got so many big teeth they seemed to all come in in a few days and grew nearly his whole height in no time he can’t figure out what to do with himself:). He’s a sweetheart nut silly boy and loves everyone. Thanks again for such valuable information!

    I know its the same principle but it would be wonderful to see training instructions for grooming intensive breeds such as poodles. Where there are additional challenges such as shaving the face, sanitary and inbetween the toes and the dog has to learn to tolerate and be still.

      @kikopup  4 года назад +3

      Thats a great idea, actually the two dogs I showed - Wish and Lucy the golden poodle mix were difficult dogs. The advice at the end of the video is what is most important. For a sensitive dog, treat the dog as if you are doing something painful, repeating it over and over for a treat will not make the dog better, so varying the training, keeping sessions short and mixing in behaviors the dog likes will greatly improve the training. I also have a link to 5 grooming tips that can help for adult dogs in the description. This training is not easy for some dogs. The difference between Wish my one border collie and Halo the other is that Halo probably needed only a few lessons just to get the concept of grooming not being something bad, but Wish was so sensitive and scared to be touched especially on her feet that the steps had to be broken up so small. The key is also really conditioning the tools to be fun outside of grooming. Like dogs who bark at knocking when a visitor comes, they get sensitized to the knocking and will have a reaction to it even when no one is there, that is what happens to the sight and sound of the tools. So a big focus for sensitive dogs is simply working on the site and sound. This will also greatly improve training.

      @@kikopup thank you 😊 but there is one issue that I have encountered with a yorkie in my family and that I am concerned might happen with my future poodle pup (expected in 2021). If the dog is nervous and sensitive and is taking a very long time to adjust to the process. The need to be groomed still doesnt go away. They still have to be trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks. Not just for appearance but for their health and wellbeing. Matting is painful and dangerous. With the yorkie (lives and belongs to my mother, not me). Its become a vicious cycle. He hates getting brushed and groomed, but then he gets tangles, they hurt to brush and as my mother tries to desensitise him to brushing by taking things slow they become matts. Then it cant wait anymore, he has to be shaved down. I dont even want to know how he behaves at the groomer. He must be an absolute monster and then gets re-traumatised all over again by being taken over the threshhold and the cycle begins all over again.

    Hi, as a professional dog groomer I really enjoyed this video. I was wondering at the start of the video you said that you'd ask for the dogs attention and if the normal cue didn't work you make a blowing noise. Is this acting as something novel that will get the puppies attention or is it intended as something unpleasant that the puppy will associate with punishment?

    I subbed to your channel years ago to prepare for the puppy I was dreaming of once getting. Now I’m adopting an older dog instead, a rescue that’s estimated to be around 4 years old. Do you think most of your puppy videos will still be relevant to me in training an adult street dog that’s never lived with humans?

    • @kikopup
      @kikopup  4 года назад +4

      The reason I say the video is just for puppies is because some adult dogs bite without warning when you go to touch their feet. Now this is not the case with all adult dogs and adolescents but I dont want to set someone up to fail. I am going to finish making the adult dog version that is public but its going to be different than this one. If you'd like email me at dogmanticsstore@gmail.com and I can share a handling video with you from my reactivity video on demand.

    "...what other people might do to your puppy before you can tell them that's not how to pet a puppy."
    UGH, wish I'd seen this sooner! So many people think that flailing at my pup is acceptable and then are somehow surprised when he gets excited and starts "shouting" at them. The guy who fixed our fence did exactly that the other day, showed up on the front door step and flapped and grabbed wildly at my pup, getting him really stirred up and barking, then said, "Oh, he's barking! I guess he doesn't like my high-vis jacket."
    Uh, no mate. Gwion has seen and met as many people wearing high-vis jackets as I could reasonably manage, he'd seen a couple of guys in high-vis the day before and barely given them a glance. What he didn't like was your behaviour. *facepalm*
    In other news, I can see I've got a bit of a long road ahead if I want to get Gwion to be chill about having his nails done, we're ok at the "treats for feets" level but he isn't at all cool with clippers near his nails. Unfortunately I don't have much competent assistance available and he's a short-legged breed (Cardigan corgi) so limb manipulation has to be a bit.... considered. I had to press the issue somewhat because his front claws were getting far too long (so much for the vet assistant telling me they'd wear down once he started walking on pavements - NOPE!). I have a grooming dremel ordered and we'll go back to step one. At least some exciting new treats came in the post today.
