      Eric Hollaway I know it's a bit of a cop out, I can't say anything specific, but even a layman can tell a master when they see one. But if I had to say, some high speed corners were perfect, but some others were not great lines and could've carried more speed around.

    • @alan4178
      @alan4178 4 года назад +3

      For me the best to watch was the Brabham, the later cars with their aero looked to have lowered the skill required for the driver and decreased the spectacle for those watching. It looks like the old tracks suited the old cars, it puts perspective on why circuits needed to modernise for entertainment as well as for safety, the old silverstone would be a right bore if they hadn't built the new corners.

    Talking about classic circuits, I wonder what F1 cars from different eras would be capable of at Charade/Clermont-Ferrand. For those who don't know the place, it's basically a French Nordschleife at 1/3 scale which hosted the French GP a couple of times between 1965 and 1972. It's also absolutely bonkers.
    The track includes a lot of turns which may or may not be taken at full throttle in more modern cars, much more than at classic Spa.

    Possibly a different perspective. I did work experience at Ilmor Engineering back in '97, for the 2 weeks leading up to the European Grand Prix. I was working in the same building as the dyno, so whenever they had the new G block engines on test, we got to hear them. They never ran them at max revs for more than about a minute. I suspect that both the '92 Ferrari, and the '17 Williams would have suffered catastrophic engine failure (engine decides it would rather be a very expensive grenade rather than an engine) if you tried to run them like that for race distance.

      @lzh4950 4 года назад +1

      LMP1 might be faster at Spa I think since I believe they have an even higher top speed, & their lower aerodynamic grip might be less of a disadvantage compared to F1 cars since the old Spa's corners are relatively gentle

    This is great! Another thing to consider between this simulation and reality (besides the engine going flat out for that long) is that modern supersoft racing tires would have so much pickup from a country road and its dusty shoulders that driving that the car would be like driving on ice by the end of the lap.

  • @stuartclague3914
    @stuartclague3914 4 года назад +1

    That was more informative than I expected. While recognizing the obvious limitations of comparing sim to reality, it does clearly demonstrate the much more challenging conditions the drivers faced in the 60’s - track safety, grip, car fragility, consequences of a high speed crash etc. No wonder Jim Clark hard Spa, although he won it multiple times and sometimes minutes ahead of the next driver! Imagine driving Spa in the wet in that era!

    Great fun! Thank you!
    Your first run reminded me of Jackie Stewart's story of him going off into a ditch (badly injured) and he's covered in petrol-soaked clothes. No marshalls at that point so Graham Hill stopped, got him out with a lot of difficulty, but realising Stewart was covered in petrol (their biggest fear back then, unsurprisingly), he stripped him naked. I seem to remember that some farmer came along to help, a blanket appears at some point, but iirc, not before a couple of nuns saw the classical "villain" look of Hill (that tash really gave him the Victorian bad guy look, as did the twinkle in his eyes lol), who was holding onto a naked, young bloke in a field! He tells the story far better than me... If you get the chance to hear him talk about it (I think it was on a maybe BBC? documentary about the dangerous days of F1) or read about it, do! He's an amazing storyteller, and the warmth in his voice as he talks about his old mates is wonderful.

    Rouen-Les-Essarts please Aidan. I would love to see what modern cars would make of the fast downhill curves leading to the cobbled hairpin and the blast back up through the forest to the top of the hill. David Purley used to scream into his helmet to help keep his throttle foot planted through the terrifying downhill sweepers... One of the greatest but most dangerous tracks of all time

    This was pretty cool. Really puts into perspective the modern circuits that people say are boring. The cars are so capable, it's almost impossible to get "exciting" racing from them. Almost like it should just be a time trials format, like perpetual qualifying.

      CC_CGN same. Used to wake up ridiculously early for every single race and watch it in a cold room (that’s where the TV was) when I was a kid. Watched it sometimes when I was a teenager and haven’t watched it all for the last decade I think. There just wasn’t much to watch.

    I dimly remember the '66 version of Spa, I was 5 years old that year. Having got used to hearing contemporary F1 cars the rev drops between gears in the 5-speed box in the Brabham was quite a shock. Personally I'd like to see F1 go back to something closer to that car where the suspension actually moved over bumps, squatted under power and brakes and where mechanical grip versus driver skill counted for everything.

    Really interesting (and exciting!) video. It's interesting that, not only has the speed of the cars increased greatly over the years, the level of grip seems to have increased at an even higher rate, since you can go flat out through more of the course with the newer cars. Does this suggest that the newer cars could stand to have even more power, so as to go faster on the straight sections, and then brake to be grip-limited in the curves?
