Levi gets given so many terrible decisions to make. It's no wonder his expression is always so severe. Other people get to have emotions, get to lose their tempers, be enraged, go to pieces, be terrified, but Levi always has to stay calm and take these horrible decisions.
That's why he empathizes with Eren so much, he knows the position he's in, Levi even says "I'm sorry for always making you do this every time" I mean...😔

I think one of the saddest parts that people sometimes overlook is the pattern of Levi spilling his heart to his comrades while they’re on the verge of dying and then realizing they’re dead and they didn’t hear what he had to say.
Erwin didn’t shoot his hand to stop Levi from reviving him. He was recalling a memory from his childhood when he raised his hand and asked the teacher a question about the world beyond the walls. That changed Levi’s mind because Erwin had no life goals beyond the war like Armin. Therefore, he needed to be laid to rest.
It blows my mind how many people get this wrong by thinking Erwin slapped Levi's hand to refuse the injection. It's like the moment he does that everyone stops processing the next scene of him asking the teacher a question.
Erwin's dream was like armin's dream. Armin saw the sea on the book and he wanted to see it physically and after that he became stale. Erwin would be the same as armin, if he could see grisha's books about the outside world he would dream for more to see the marleyans and their place to feed his curiousity just like armin.
I think it was a little of both, the way he slaps Levi's hand away is like he's subconsciously telling him to choose Armin, the timing wasn't a coincidence. Right before this episode Erwin was preparing Armin to be a commander as well.
@@starkage9987 True, Erwin didn't know anything beyond the walls like Armin, who had seen the book. Of course Armin had a dream beyond the walls and war. It's so sad how when Bert wakes up he had a memory lapse and was happy to see his old friends only to remember his current situation and call out for help to the only friends he had left. You guys will see why it's not all the warriors fault. Like Bert said himself "This world is just that cruel."
he has not had the worst life for the last 5 years. but instead of understanding and changing something, he again destroys the wall and acts as someone ordered him. if he's so good, why didn't he just give up or kill himself? Finally, people that actually felt bad for Bertholdt when he died. Even if you’re not a manga reader, it doesn’t take much to know that he wasn’t a bad person.
You'd think his declaration back when they abducted Eren would have made viewers realize something is really wrong there. Thankfully, these two have been on it all along, guessing that.

This episode made me weep like a b*tch, seriously. First, tears of joy came out when Eren found out that Armin was still alive, then, my tears of joy turned into tears of dismay when the redhaired dude brought Erwin barely alive, and I immediately knew what was going to happen. Next, I was crying my heart out watching Mikasa fighting Levi and trying to take the syringe from him and then being held back by Hange and when Levi was making Mikasa crying in despair for the decision he made, Hange said one of the most moving quotes of the serie: "I have people I want to bring back, too. Hundreds of them..." alongside with the flashbacks of Moblit saving her and dying afterwards and that just killed me. My eyes wouldn't stop watering when Eren was sobbing and begging Levi to change his mind and then dropped another great line: " the only thoughts in my head are full of hate, but he's not like that, Armin cares about more than fighting, he has dreams!..." and my heart just couldn't take it. It got worse when Erwin relived the moment when he asked his dad the question that make his Journey of seeking truth and justice begin. And then again, tears streaming down my face when Levi reconsidered and ended up choosing Armin to live and leaving Erwin to rest in peace. I cried for more or less 20 minutes straight. And watching these pretty girls reacting almost the same way I did, made relive the whole thing again, so yeah, I'm crying with them, too.
I think, that Ervin was living this whole time with not letting this memory go away, so even after he achieved some "rest", he found himself in the same class room, asking question, answering on witch literally killed his father... That's heavy :(
Also, one detail that everyone forgetting about to mention: another one similarity between Armin and Ervin is that their parents were killed by secret crown agents (Armin's parents were crushed after they had tried to fly away on their handmade air gear. When Hange blame priest killer for all of his sins, he said it to her)
I actually understand Floch in THIS episode (not talking about S4). I can't really blame him for seeing things from THIS perspective at this point. He just joined scouts and THIS happens. Like... yea. No wonder his head got messed up and he wants some justice even if it'd be an illusion.
When they joined the Scouts, they all pledge to give their hearts, and, if needed, their lives for the sake of Mankind and the mission of the corp. Floch actually followed through with this vow, and barely survived thanks to miraculous luck, whereas Eren and Mikasa prioritized their personal feelings over the best choice for mankind, showing that once the chips are down, their pledge was fake. On this day, Floch gained all the respectability and the legitimacy to speak his mind as one of the Scout veterans, and to not shut up.
Yea Floch was literally Isayama giving the fodder characters a voice. I was with him on this one. Eren and Mikasa were really acting superior here because they’ve been in the scouts longer than he has. Something Hange, Levi or Erwin never did even though they have much more experience than everyone else.
I hated they cuted off/ shortened his dialogue on the award ceremony. In the manga he actually manages to expose the 104th's hypocrisies regarding their commitment to the scouts 'it's all about them and not the best for humanity'. In the anime they just make it seem like he is btching. 'Medals for who?' Honoring the lost lives of comrades they just disrespected by choosing their best friend to live instead of their commander.
Levi was shocked when he saw Hange because he thought everyone on the other side that fought Reiner and Bernard are dead by The Colossal's nuke, and by that, they are the only veterans left in Scout. RIP Erwin, Moblit, Mike, Nanaba, and every fallen veterans, gone but never forgotten
Mike was killed like a half of year ago at it minimum. What are you talking about? I mean, most likely he went missing, but lets be realists here - everyone understood, that he was not alive anymore when just a few days had past, not months
@@proxximatte4897 I think you misunderstood, he’s saying he’s shocked to see Hange because with her “death” he assumed he was the last veteran scout member left.
When I watched this episode I cried in fear for Armin, then felt relieved because he was the titan, then cried for Bertholdt, then cried for Erwin, then was happy for Armin- this whole episode's a rollercoaster
Levi's reaction to Erwin raising his hand absolutely destroyed me. The only person, his only commander, who saved him and pulled him out of the underground living hell, is now dead. Erwin told Levi to let him make the choice. Levi made the choice to let Erwin rest now. That he did. It still hurts no matter how many times I've re-watched this whole episode, "Midnight Sun."
Its name "Midnight Sun" is a wonderful nickname that means Commander Erwin death at sunset, which is the moment of farewell. Isayama really came up with the title very creative👑👑👑👑😭😭😭😭😭
13:50 I always liked this episode because it showed how much Mikasa cares for Armin. I know one criticism of the anime versus the manga is Mikasa sort of developed a one-track mind for Eren, where in the manga one of her defining traits is how much she cares for all her friends, not just Eren. I always felt like we got some of that Mikasa in this episode.
Bizarre choice on the anime's sides, I remember some reddit post with three side-by-side scenes of anime and manga. The manga panels show mikasa having multiple lines of dialogue, and in the anime the same scene is just mikasa saying "eren."

I don’t get how is it possible for some people to watch the entire anime/manga and still be mad at Bertholdt. One of the most tragic characters i can recall to my mind. His helplessness and fear when he realized that was his last moment. The way he called for Annie and Reiner is just so unbelievably sad to me, yes he grew up caring for the Eldians in the walls, but Annie and Reiner will always be his true friends and companions in his heart. Everybody here is a victim, Bertholdt included. We tend to forget they were just mere childrens when they destroyed the walls, brainwashed by their rotten society.
I think it's because he's the quiet type which gives the impression he doesn't care and some people are just too moronic to read through the lines or realize that some people just aren't good at expressing themselves. Or these are people are just see things too black and white to understand the tragedy of war (far as I'm concerned the only ones who are truly evil are those who start the war everybody else just suffers for it). It's quite disturbing how some people hate Bertolt since he's actually quite relatable as many people in real life, especially today, suffer insecurities and its not uncommon for them to have a more confident best friend which is why Reiner and Bertolt's friendship has always been one of my favorites. I'm also surprised many of these same people still like Mikasa because she's not really one to share her feelings either (Mikasa and Bertolt are actually quite alike when you think about it)
I always like Bertholdt. I was in hard denial during the big reveal, thought Mikasa was in the wrong even after Reiner showed his colors. This end was so tragic to me, the way he smiled when he saw his friends. And his cry out to his comrades at the end. Excellent tragedy.
caring, remorse, repentance... feelings dont matter. Eldians of the island did nothing wrong to anyone but the Berthold Reiner and Annie massacred them. The only thing that matters is facts. Helping your old man live a bit longer, becoming a Marley citizen to better your family's life etc. Nothing can justify the massacre they unleashed upon Paradi Island. How they feel, how they think does not matter they are evil.
@@chick2154 No. They volunteered. Warriors are chosen from applicants and they apply with freewill. Eren does hate Reiner and Berthold along with the world, he just understood the process they went through. Sure, the creator shows us all the perspectives without siding with anyone and show everyone's human side. But it doesn't mean that we are to symphatise with everyone and blame no one. Yes they did not do horrible things for the sake of it they had self-justifications and motivations and so on. And simple minded people always show symphaty to that. If we let those kind of people judge Nazis or exploding terrorists they would symphatise with them as well, after alll everyone has a self-reasoning for their actions. Terrorists for example believe that God wants them to do it. So what? are you gonna say they are not evil? they are not to blame and hate? What makes people evil is actions. why they did it, what they feel.. Matters not.
Levi's choice has been analysed to death over countless debates using both authorial intent from the interviews and through dialogue analyses. But one of my biggest gripes with most interpretations is that they bank on the automatic assumption that it was a strategic choice, or at least, discredit Levi's decision on purely utilitarian grounds. Whether it's focused entirely on Levi's motivation or simply narrative value, people often simplify his decision to one of two facets, while ignoring the various complexities behind it. There's no reason why we were shown a barrage of flashbacks if the decision made was only going to be one dimensional, as it was presented as having many factors to it and doesn't exist in a vacuum. While it can be argued that certain things unfolded so that Levi would have to make the choice he does (as it was set up by Isayama), but even though Levi's primary motivation was depicted as wanting Erwin not to have to suffer as being forced to live as a monster, letting him "rest", Levi is also influenced by multiple other things. Isayama sets up well in advance that Levi would have to make this choice by having Levi witness Kenny's death and final words, which impact how he views Erwin's final confessions to him, and of course he also listens in on Armin's talk of his dreams before the battle. All of this was shown to us as Levi is debating his choice so we don't forget that all of it matters here. All of this setup was made in order for Levi's decision to play out a certain way. But to be clear, neither Erwin's dream nor Armin's dream is "purer" or "better"- it's not at all about that. It's about what Kenny says, that feeling of being enslaved to something, in this case a dream, which ties you to a miserable existence- and the freedom and peace from letting it go. The quick succession of flashbacks can be listed down as: 1. Kenny smiling as he lets go of the dream that enslaved him and choosing to go out on his own terms, selflessly entrusting Levi with the titan serum injection which would go in to aid humanity. 2. Erwin smiling and thanking Levi genuinely as Levi releases him from the dream that enslaved him, "give up your dream and die", and allowing him to make the choice (to sacrifice himself for humanity) that he wants the strength to make (even though it'll cost him his dream) 3. Armin's wide-eyed excitement talking about his dream to see the ocean, untainted by any suffering or pain, just some idealistic want that Armin himself was able to give up all on his own just recently (which is why he's dying) All three men impacting Levi's choice are depicted as happy/smiling, but for two (Kenny and Erwin), it's by letting go of their dreams, not like Armin who is smiling at the thought of achieving his. But this decision isn't in a vacuum. As much as Levi is driven by wanting to let Erwin be at peace, he obviously wouldn't just kill him or let him die if there wasn't an alternate person on death's door. There's no world in which Levi just lets the Colossal Titan power go unused, or gives the serum to someone not dying and let Erwin die. The point is that there is a choice that has to be made and someone will die. And it is purposeful that Armin is that person who is the alternate. Because Armin is a known quantity to Levi and someone we have seen interact with and bond with. More importantly, Armin has the same major skill set as Erwin, just lacking the experience to full utilise: (Isayama: In tankobon volume 18, as everyone searched for Reiner within the wall crevices, I had hoped to juxtaposition Erwin and Armin as “the past” and “the future” as I drew.) Eren, Levi, Hange, they all acknowledge Armin is a great talent - the question isn't whether or not he's valuable and can provide similar expertise to Erwin because all three of them are aware he could, it's just does that matter since he's not there yet (and Erwin is). If these choices were presented to Levi with Armin not being an alternative, it'd likely be a very different situation because Levi never falters in his motivation of ending the titans to prove meaning to his comrades sacrifices. He's never stops caring about that victory. Levi entrusted the future to Armin because he had that same look in his eyes, embodying the dreams of an idealised world, forward-thinking that drove the OG Survey Corps in many ways, the embodiment of the SC spirit, so to speak. That's why Armin had to be the alternative, no one else has the potential to be Erwin's successor in this way and that gives Levi (and the story) the leeway to make the emotional choice. Adding onto that, Levi is operating at that moment with the perspective that the Walls are the last of humanity and there are a few rogue titan shifters- that they just beat back- as well as mindless titans. He (and everyone else) has no idea that the whole world is out to get them and they'd be crunched for time the way they end up being- or as Eren puts it, "Our enemy was more powerful than we ever could have imagined". It's far more reasonable to make a decision that assumes Armin will have some time to grow into his abilities and Hange is a perfectly capable Commander who can also fill Erwin's shoes when assuming the status quo they had would not be dramatically upended as it was. But that's why Levi's personal mantra is no one can know the future so make the choice that you'll regret least, because you can only make decisions based on what you know at the time rather than worry about what you would've done had you known more. The choice may start in some ways about who is better for humanity, but it quickly moves into an emotional choice because of Eren and Mikasa's actions but also because of Levi's perspective. Levi is Erwin's confidante, the one person that we see Erwin be truly vulnerable with. Levi has seen countless displays of Erwin unparalleled intellect at work. Levi is privy to Erwin's deepest darkest secrets and fears and also the pain attached to his dream. On the other hand, Armin is someone Levi has actively mentored. Levi cares about Armin, too, he's not just some random kid- he's on his squad. Levi has reassured Armin, listened to him share his hopes and dreams, saved his life, witnessed his multiple strategic successes, etc. The real difference for who to revive is that Levi saw Erwin as someone put on a pedestal, by him and others, no longer allowed to be a person with wants and flaws, but tethered to an existence where he was enslaved- forever in a cycle of tormented by his childhood actions inadvertently leading to his dad's death, fixating on the basement to try to get closure for his father and him, and in the process "lying to himself" and "lying to his friends", building a pile of corpses, and forced to become a devil. While Levi doesn't get it all, he understands the way this is affecting Erwin. (Isayama: the feeling is that [Erwin] died without knowing the answer himself. But even maintaining this state of “not knowing” was seemingly Erwin’s own choice... Interviewer: Does Levi understand Erwin’s mindset? Isayama: Yes. The scene where Levi decided Erwin’s fate... Kenny didn’t save himself by utilizing the serum. Instead, he entrusted it to Levi before dying. From Levi’s perspective, the Kenny who always survived by being selfish actually did something selfless in his final moments - that shocked him immensely. Because of that experience, Levi didn’t revive Erwin. He accepted Erwin as human and chose to let him die.) Kenny who had the option, or at least he thought he did, to extend his life with the serum, instead selflessly chose to give it to Levi and let go of what enslaved him. Levi is also respecting Erwin's choice here. Erwin thanked Levi for freeing him from his dream that caused him a lot of pain and guilt, and to become the "responsible adult" (as Isayama describes it) who can face his fallen comrades, the pile of corpses he stands on. And whoever is chosen has to inherit the burden and pressure of being the Colossal Titan, too- so Levi would be bringing Erwin back to take the role of "devil", leading him back into the cycle of guilt, and also adding onto it more pressure in the form of being a titan shifter. All of this factors into why Levi chooses to let Erwin go rest. To sum it up, Levi understood that Erwin could only find peace with his dream unrealised. He expressed before the final charge how his primary selfish motivation which was to see the basement really hurt him. To this, Erwin confided in Levi before finally letting go of his painful dream to honour the lives of his fallen comrades. But to revive him would nullify this final act of selflessness, as well as bring him back into the vicious cycle of guilt by making him give up his humanity once more to be their 'devil'. Levi was also inspired by how in his final moments Kenny, who was a selfish person, did a selfless act, so letting Erwin go out on his own terms would be the least he could do for someone he respects a lot. And for everyone in the replies conflating Levi's initial strategic choice with his final emotionally charged one that was already in line with what Eren and Mikasa wanted, please remember the turning point of Erwin raising his hand, which convinced Levi to change his mind, especially at a time where he was already having those flashbacks that went on to influence him.
This frustrates me because Levi gave Eren so much shit about leaving emotion out of it, but then actively made the choice the he objectively claimed was the "wrong" one because he wanted to let his friend rest.
Erwin died in the story a hero overall while we still did not know about the greater truth he died fighting for what was perceived as the good cause till the point in the story, to revive him would be to put him through much more pain and suffering complicate his life which had been straightforward up to that point.
@@kingofhearts642 I can understand your frustration but I love that it humanizes Levi. Up til this point we've NEVER seen Levi make the wrong decision. Levi made the wrong choice. He goes on about everyone being cry babies and drunk on something and then he goes and lets emotions choose who lives. Erwin sacrificed so many to get the job done well guess what time for Erwin to sacrifice his rest until the job is done. Levi wimped out.
@@throwawayaccount5637 I mean Armin wasn’t just a ‘15 year old boy’; like Erwin, he contributed a lot to the survey corps’ success. I can understand both sides, but disparaging Armin’s skill because of his age is pretty stupid.
@@CA_5713 Armin is overpraised, both Erwin and Hange would also managed to come with the strategies Armin did. Imagine if the roles were switched and Armin has to be the one to deal with Beast Titan while Erwin deals with Armored and Collosal, Armin wouldn't even able to come up with anything since the idea of sacrificing others would never come to his mind. Erwin would've just asked Levi to solo the Armored Titan, while the rest of the troops focus on Collosal Titan. Meanwhile Armin would just freeze to death seeing all the cringevengers get massacred with boulders in front of his eyes. just a fair advice, dont go through AOT fandom cause it's toxic specially on twitter as they tend to overexaggerate things over small things, its better to see it for yourself rather than reading comments regarding season 4 cause it might affect your judgement. Overall i would say that Season 4 animation is so good compared to other animes
Wit studio excels at beautifully animated action set pieces but their handling of anything outside of that is mediocre. They use so many still shots that it becomes pretty distracting. Mappa's animation quality of the normal scenes far exceeded that of Wit's. Yes, their action set pieces were inferior but they were on a super tight deadline so it's a bit unfair to judge them overly harshly on that. If they were given the proper amount of time then season 4 could have been superior to every previous season in terms of animation quality in every aspect.

You're right the outside situation is the same except there's a major difference, Marco wanted to talk things through and understand their situation but here Bertholdt the victim (according to you) didn't want to talk it out even after Armin tried previously. LM Reactions. Studio WIT was in charge for AoT Season 1 to Season 3. When season 4 was in the planning process, WIT withdraw AoT because of the schedule (AoT is one of the most complicated anime to draw, so it takes a really long time and effort to do so). No studio wanted to take AoT season 4...that's when MAPPA studio came along and accepted this COMPLICATED MISSION. The animation will look different, but I think it's not a big deal, some scenes will look off, but at the end of the day I think MAPPA nailed it. Also consider that a lot of the AoT fandom sent death threats to MAPPA, even one of the directors HAD to apologize for not meeting "fans" expectations (WTF). Even with studio change, AoT S4 still has better animation than 90% of anime. Lol MAPPA did a great job for season 4. Don't worry and enjoy the ride
nevertheless, thats not the true reason why they drop aot, its not mappa fault either. The published company want to finish aot as soon as they can, so they offer to Wit Studio as soon as possible ( i think the want to complete the anime the same day as the manga) and of course Wit Studio due to it the small crew and quality of the show they refuse, same as all Studios except Mappa who accept the offer, if you they drop aot just of efforts, why they start animate aot in the first place without ignoring the quality, even if they want rest, they could take it like the gap between s1 and s2
I just want to point out that when Erwin raises his arm it was because of his nerves firing off to a memory of when he asked his father are there more people outside the walls. cause a lot of reactors either miss it or assume Erwin wanted levi to give armin the injection.
I never really thought about it before until you guys said it, but I think there's truth to Floch accidentally swaying Levi to save Armin instead. Levi realised he could save Erwin from "this hell".
I believe Levi knew Erwin too well to recognise he is a broken man since he loss a limb and found out titan are human as his dad claim. Once Erwin reach basement and grasp the truth, our Erwin would fulfill his dream and no longer want to pursue any futher but be sorry and regret his whole life for all the death of his comrades. He is just too broken as a man to continue his journey as a leader of survey corp anymore. So Levi decided to spare Erwin from his hell alive honorably here.
@@JeusAlprime108 I disagree that Erwin would be too broken to go on. Rather, Levi let him die because he knew that Erwin would not stop, because he would keep going on until he truly lost his humanity, and he didn't want that to happen. If Levi thought Erwin would have just stopped, this would have been much easier for him to choose. Erwin was driven by guilt in a sense, so he would have kept on fighting. He would have been able to do everything Hange and Armin could, perhaps even better, but he would ruin himself in the process and that's why Levi let him rest in peace rather than force him to come back.
Seeing Moblitt save Hange kills me. The last thing her eye saw was his sacrifice. And seeing how important Armin is to Eren & Mikasa. Then Erwin. How Levi basically eulogized him. How it’s not right to bring him back to this hell and to let him rest. Holy cow these last 3 eps killed me. We had to carry these for a week. 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭 This shoe is amazing. I’m starting the manga this week. 💜💜
Poor bertholdt. Just a kid who didn t knew better. Tourmented by his sins all he was able to do was break down. His only friend beeing on the edge of madness and all the other friendship based on lie and creating guilt each passing second. In the end he accepted reality and finished his mission. Just a kid thrown into the world. In his last moment when seeing the only persons he liked and loved he sees that he himself is the devil. Dying in grief regrets and pure agony while yelling the name of his love and his only friend left. That is the fate of the colossal titan. The dark fate of berthold hoover
I feel so terrible for Levi. He cares so much about his comrades and for him to let his best friend die when he had the chance to save him is just heartbreaking. I think he loved his friend so much that he didn't want him to suffer more by coming back to their cruel world so Levi let's him pass peacefully after Erwin had already gave up on his dream to lead the suicide charge. Very beautiful story and just so sad. Love your reactions and can't wait for the next season!
That's why the audience finally was given Erwin's last word to Levi: "Thank you". Erwin felt all the pain of his actions throughout his time as commander, and he was done. Levi realized that, and it's why he gave the injection to Armin. He knew Erwin couldn't/wouldn't continue as he had after he had realized his dream of seeing the basement. He had been tortured this entire time by this cruel world, and Levi gave him the rest in death, as a true friend would.
Bertholdt said "I feel like no matter how this all plays out, I can accept whatever happens" before the battle. But now you know what happened to him on his last moment. That's very human nature, That's why I love about him and AoT:)
Kinda like Mike in S2 ep1, when he reminds his own quote to himself, "we will have lost only the moment humanity will stop fighting" and charges the beast titan with just one sword in blind rage just to realize how powerless he was to the point of begging the titans to stop eating him. You can be the most resolved and confident person in the world but everyone acts the same in the face of certain death
this might be my favorite ep of the season just because of how captivating and emotionally striking it is despite there being little no action, even after seeing it dozens of times it still evokes those same emotions i had watching it in 2019
21:54 To help you: Season 1, 25 Episodes, 33 Manga Chapters Season 2, 12 Episodes, 17 Manga Chapters Season 3.1, 12 Episodes, 21 Manga Chapters Season 3.2, 10 Episodes, 18 Manga Chapters Season 4.1, 16 Episodes, 26 Manga Chapters Season 4.2, ? Episodes, 23 Manga Chapters So we can expect about 10 to 16 episodes for Season 4 Part 2. It depends on how much the animation studio Mappa wants to include or change. For example, in Season 3 Part 1, the story was told very quickly in the first 6 episodes and a lot was left out. I personally hope for 16 episodes. But since the anime starts in January, in the usual anime season rhythm, I think 12/13 episodes are very realistic. Because you guys aren't that familiar with it: In Japan, anime are always released in seasons. Winter season is January, February, March, spring season is April, May, June, and so on. This means that anime seasons with weekly releases often have 12 or 13 episodes (one season) or 24 or 25 episodes (two seasons). Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 1, because of its 16 episodes, therefore started four weeks before the winter season in December, otherwise the anime after Attack on Titan would be completely mixed up in the broadcasting schedule of the TV stations in Japan.
Episode 1: Judgment Episode 2: A Fleeting Moment Episode 3: From you, 2000 Years Ago Episode 4: Island Devils Episode 5: Sunset Episode 6: Retrospective Episode 7: Night of The End Episode 8: Dawn for Humanity Episode 9: The Rumbling Episode 10: In The Depths of Despair Episode 11: Devote Your Hearts Episode 12: Toward the Tree on That Hill These are my predictions, but i really hope theres more.
No opening, there's no OST and just silence all throughout up until the injection was given, and then it all ends with "Sayonara, world" in the ending. They really did a fantastic job conveying the atmosphere of the aftermath! The voice-acting was also fantastic! Kaji (Eren) and Yui (Mikasa) really gave it their all, especially Yui. The way she portrayed Mikasa this episode did not disappoint. Her crying out as she was held back by Hange was just heartbreaking. I also loved how Hange started off holding Mikasa back and then it gradually became a comforting hug. Loved Eren's dedication to Armin as well! In his last moments, Armin entrusted everything to Eren and Eren in turn, fought for Armin until the very end. The same with Levi with Erwin. It's why in the end, I couldn't really fault anyone for the way they acted during all of this. In the end, one of them was going to die and it was essentially "reasons why MY friend deserves to live more". Also loved how it came full circle in a way with what Kenny said when it came to Levi picking Armin or Erwin. The way I saw it, Armin had a real dream and aspirations whereas Erwin was more driven by an obsession. Armin's ambitions surpassed Erwin's and was more long-term compared to what Erwin really wanted. That and Levi finally freed Erwin from his sense of responsibilities for those mountain of corpses he was hallucinating. Kenny basically alluded to the fact that death frees people from the hell of spending the rest of their lives being a slave to something. Bringing back Erwin would've brought him back to hell, and he really deserves to rest. Overall, it was really nice to see Kenny having a lasting effect on Levi here. Bertholdt's death screams was pretty sad and haunting for me. The way he cried out for his friends before realizing what was happening by how they were all staring back in horror and sadness, and then how he started calling out for Annie and Reiner...Just ouch. Sayonara Erwin, Bertholdt, Moblit, Marlo, all the scouts, and Hange's left eye...
I think that’s the subtext that gets slightly missed in the episode. The part where Erwin thanks Levi. Go back to ep 16 and that part is not there. The choice here made was by Erwin, with Levi simply honouring his friend’s wishes. And that choice isnt made by Erwin knocking his hand away. The hand knock is basically Erwin reacting on instinct, he’s already half gone at that point. This is where the “Levi, thank you” is so significant. Because Erwin’s entire character arc is divided between a charismatic leader and a tortured man who knows that his own desires are so selfish that he would find death easier. That speech in ep 16 is incredibly important for that very reason. Because it sets up the tone for what this show wishes to drive home as a lesson. Erwin’s base obsession with the basement is so strong that he cant even see a life beyond the discovery. He admits to as much in ep 12. And there lies the schism in his mind, knowing that he is baselessly following that desire unable to free himself of it. The Japanese word choice for how he addresses himself throughout the show vs how he addresses himself in ep16 also amplifies this idea. The fact that Erwin himself realises how limited his agency is, is what makes him explicitly state that he would find death easier. This is why between Erwin and Armin, the latter had to be chosen because the former wanted to die. Levi realises this after Kenny’s words ring in his head too, as he is about to administer the vial. It’s a masterful setup for the theme because we experience the wish for freedom from Eren’s perspective. Wanting to be free of the titans. But what this show continually portrays is how agency on a personal and social level is brutally chipped away in war, in violence. Erwin’s character is an enigmatic but brutal representation of driving that idea home. And it’s what makes it all the more brilliant as a piece of writing. All in all, what I mean to say here is: what a beautiful beautiful piece of fiction SnK is.
Also poor Levi. Dude loosing everyone he has ever cared for. That shit made me emotional how he had to let the person who saved him from the slums rest in peace. 😢
Just to clarify, the four-legged titan was NOT controlling or ordering the Titans. The person screaming the orders was the Beast Titan inside the jaws of the four-legged titan. Also, just pause on the info cards, that's 100% fair for the reaction, everyone I knew who watched the show for the first time paused for the info cards, so don't feel like you can't take time to read it.
At first during 2nd season i really didn't liked Bernard, but after seing him conflicted on multiple ocations like when he had all those nightmares about the old man who helped them infiltrate commiting suicide, him being the only who looked back at Marco (at first) while the Titan picked him up and other details, i cannot keep hatin on him he's such a sweet guy
Just so you guys know, Season 4 Part 1's 16 episodes are adapted from 26 chapters in the manga. After that, there's 22 more chapters left to adapt. So hopefully Season 4 Part 2 will consist of 12-14 episodes. If they go with only 10 episodes, then it's going to be pretty crammed / rushed.
@@Daesma999 Its your actions that define you. Berthold killed tons of people (yes I know season 4 stuff makes you understand why and sympathize) directly led to Eren's mom being eaten and caused a ton of suffering overall. People are definitely in the right to hate him. IMO one of the best things about AoT's writing is you can love the Warriors or hate them and either way you're right
@@kumanight um.. I didn't need s4 to actually like him. He could've wiped out all of humanity and I would still think of him as a pure and kind person. Personality is what defines you. And I'm glad I didn't hear another cheer from another youtuber(s) but finally had someone to cry with
Seeing Eren plead for Armin's life was probably the most heartbreaking thing in the series up until this point. I feel like if they had chosen Erwin, Eren and Mikasa would never truly recover from it. But it also would've been very interesting to see.
Bertold's death is so much like Marco's death... Except he actually got a chance to talk about the situation with his old friends I liked him tho, such an underrated character
About season 4 (no spoilers!): there is just SO MUCH to cover and SO DIFFICULT to animate that it’s impossible to do in 1 year. Hence the delays, CGI (which is okay in my opinion) and splitting the season into 2 parts. Also, judging by the number of manga chapters left to animate, it will take another 10-12 episodes in season 4 part 2
Hey wanted to ask something. At the beginning of the video the girl on the right says "some kind of founding titan power" even tho the founding titan is not mentioned yet in the story
@Firstname Lastname Yo it seems like this is of the girls alt-account chill out buddy they're not paying you. Give me when was the word "founding titan" mentioned in season 3 part 1 i'll wait. It's mentioned the first time in the "That Day" episode.
@@N5FX I believe the name " Founding Titan" was first used by Rod Reiss when he was talking about Frieda to Historia in Season 3 Ep. 7 . And Lola even used the name during the discussion after the reaction.
A very emotional episode, almost no soundtrack, but that adds tension and drama to the moment. Exceptional work of the voice actors, it is clear that they put a lot of feeling and professionalism to generate the impact that the scene required. It was so sad to see how they were forced to choose between one of the two. Personally I think Erwin had the added value of leadership and experience (I agree with Hange's point of view), but if in the end Levi decided to save Armin it's because tought that he can also develop those qualities over time. I think the difference in the dream of both is what tipped the balance in favor of Armin, since Erwin's dream ends in discovering the secrets of Grisha Jaegar's basement, while Armin can aspire to achieve freedom. Rightly at that moment they put flashback of Kenny's last words "we all need to get drunk on something to keep moving forward"; under that premise there was the risk that Erwin would lose the motivation to continue doing a solid job as a commander, while Armin can give much more play because yearning for freedom. Besides, when Erwin dies, Levi contracts a new goal to move forward, fulfill his promise to kill the titan beast. Levi didn't want Erwin to suffer anymore and he had already renounced his dream (if not it wouldn't make sense to have shown all those flashbacks), thats why Levi said "i think it's time to let him rest". While Bertolth and Reiner had their reasons the fact is that they were the cause of a great massacre of innocent people, who are also victims of the enclosure in the walls and fighting for their freedom. It's sad the end of Berthold but he had to receive some punishment for his crimes, I would say pure karma for the Marco's death, devoured before the eyes of his former comrades, although I think that ending deserved it more Reiner. R.I.P commander Erwin, undoubt one of the best characters of this anime. He won't be able to fulfill his dream but in return he gave the people of the walls the opportunity to move on, quite altruistic of him to give up his life and his personal reasons for it. He may rest in peace, for he fulfilled his duty just as did all those men who perished under his command.
people talking about bad CGI in season 4 is just bullshit . season 4 with character development it delivers is just too good to get shittalked by someone who was into animation titans are not the only thing that matters the thing that matters the most is characters and eren mikasa and armin is seasons 1/3 are just flat compare to season 4 versions of themselfes
there is a phrase in japanese "お疲れ様でした" (otsukaresama deshita) it doesn't have a literal meaning but it can be used as an expression for "you did a good job, you deserve a well deserved time to relax". it's all I can say to you girls. amazing job. thank you and keep up with good work.
I think the girls' speech at the start of the video is amazing, cuz they foresaw the main dilemma of the episode they were about to react to. I must say I was quite disappointed when you mentioned earlier you got spoiled and found out Erwin's gonna die. I thought this would lead straight to ruining this episode's reaction. I was wrong. You know when a show is cool when you kind of know what's going to happen and still breaks you down emotionally. Your face during Mikasa's scream.... Sooo heartbreaking I cannot tell.xDD
Hey wanted to ask something. At the beginning of the video the girl on the right says "some kind of founding titan power" even tho the founding titan is not mentioned yet in the story
This episodes gets me every time. Well to be honest, I say that about a lot of episodes lol. Season 1 to 3 were made by Studio WIT, but they did not accept to work on season 4 because the publishing company wanted it on a very tight schedule and WIT was working on other projects at the time such as Great Pretender so they couldn't handle it. AOT is one of the most popular Anime of all time but it's also one of the hardest to produce, no other studio accepted to work on it on that tight schedule (Covid made it even worst) except for Mappa which btw is also one of the best Studios out there, at that time Mappa was also working on JJK which had some of the best animation you can find in Anime since they took the time to work on it but they still think Mappa did a great job both with the animation and adaptation of the story and we're thankful for them! So don't worry guys season 4 is amazing! Also, please keep doing Anime reactions when you're done with AOT, and I would suggest to react to Death Note if you've never seen it, it's my second favorite anime after AOT!
After finishing the story i came back here rewatching this episode and this time i cried most on Bertholdt death. Such a tragic story where everyone is a victim of cruel world
Watching Berthold get eaten always makes me cry say what you will but that moment always get me since I'm all caught up on everything even before I can't even imagine those last moments he had
finally someone on the same wave. Till now I haven't watched this without crying. I was mentall preparing myself for their reaction for DAYS and I broke down right after I saw the notification and the thumbnail. Bertholdt is just so underrated and so kind and his death is making me cry in the most ugly way possible.. Everytime. I'm surprised I haven't had a mental breakdown from seeing him die this often...
I don't understand why people still debate about the motivations behind Levi's choice when in the next episode he literally says: "Let's be clear, I was the one who chose you. No, that's not it. FOR PERSONAL REASONS, I chose this to be the place where Erwin dies". Levi's choice isn't a strategic one, it's an emotional one. At this point saving Erwin is the logical choice: he has more experience, more power, he's their leader and their simbol. Everyone knows it - Levi, Hangee and even Armin after. Erwin would have keep fighting, he would have become the demon everyone needed and Levi doesn't want that. He's horrified when Floch calls him a demon. Armin's ocean is a nice idea, but still a childish one, they know he's brilliant, they know he's young and with a possible bright future ahead, but they don't know what'll happen next, they don't know what they'll need. Choosing Armin is a gamble, it's not the safe choice. And yet, Levi goes against all of his instincts and needs to protect and save Erwin, against the rational choice to finally give him peace and let him rest. To free him from the hell of decades of deaths, impossible decisions, regrets, fears and fights. Yes, he obviously thinks about Kenny and Armin and the sea and he considers all these factors but ultimately it's s a choice based on love. And he knows it and he says it and he doesn't ever regret it.

Erwin at his core is character driven by his past, Armin is driven towards future

I actually understand Floch in THIS episode (not talking about S4). I can't really blame him for seeing things from THIS perspective at this point. He just joined scouts and THIS happens. Like... yea. No wonder his head got messed up and he wants some justice even if it'd be an illusion.
Imagine you're in the Military and some guys choose to save a teen instead of saving the Commander, everyone would be pissed hahaha

Levi's reaction to Erwin raising his hand absolutely destroyed me. The only person, his only commander, who saved him and pulled him out of the underground living hell, is now dead. 13:50 I always liked this episode because it showed how much Mikasa cares for Armin. I always felt like we got some of that Mikasa in this episode.
And season 4 Mikasa elevates her character even more

The quick succession of flashbacks can be listed down as:
1. Kenny smiling as he lets go of the dream that enslaved him and choosing to go out on his own terms, selflessly entrusting Levi with the titan serum injection which would go in to aid humanity.
2. Erwin smiling and thanking Levi genuinely as Levi releases him from the dream that enslaved him, "give up your dream and die", and allowing him to make the choice (to sacrifice himself for humanity) that he wants the strength to make (even though it'll cost him his dream)
3. Armin's wide-eyed excitement talking about his dream to see the ocean, untainted by any suffering or pain, just some idealistic want that Armin himself was able to give up all on his own just recently (which is why he's dying)
All three men impacting Levi's choice are depicted as happy/smiling, but for two (Kenny and Erwin), it's by letting go of their dreams, not like Armin who is smiling at the thought of achieving his.
More importantly, Armin has the same major skill set as Erwin, just lacking the experience to full utilise:
(Isayama: In tankobon volume 18, as everyone searched for Reiner within the wall crevices, I had hoped to juxtaposition Erwin and Armin as “the past” and “the future” as I drew.)
Eren, Levi, Hange, they all acknowledge Armin is a great talent - the question isn't whether or not he's valuable and can provide similar expertise to Erwin because all three of them are aware he could, it's just does that matter since he's not there yet (and Erwin is).
He accepted Erwin as human and chose to let him die.)
Kenny who had the option, or at least he thought he did, to extend his life with the serum, instead selflessly chose to give it to Levi and let go of what enslaved him.
He's always cool and level headed whereas we've seen people like Mikasa in the forest lose her cool trying to kill Annie and put the mission in jeopardy. It was huge to see Levi finally crack and make a choice driven by emotion.
Chill bro

The only advantage Armin has over Erwin is his ability to gather information really quick, while Erwin has the experience and he's willing to take risks which was how Erwin and Levi took down the Beast Titan.
@@Amalia19 That is a good analogy - both Erwin and Armin can plan good (reckless) strategies but only Erwin had the balls to take tough decisions, even if it included sacrificing his comrades.

Levi realized that, and it's why he gave the injection to Armin. He knew Erwin couldn't/wouldn't continue as he had after he had realized his dream of seeing the basement. He had been tortured this entire time by this cruel world, and Levi gave him the rest in death, as a true friend would.
@@nikola_E1337 aha thanks
Bertholdt said "I feel like no matter how this all plays out, I can accept whatever happens" before the battle.
But now you know what happened to him on his last moment.
That's very human nature, That's why I love about him and AoT:)
Kinda like Mike in S2 ep1, when he reminds his own quote to himself, "we will have lost only the moment humanity will stop fighting" and charges the beast titan with just one sword in blind rage just to realize how powerless he was to the point of begging the titans to stop eating him.
You can be the most resolved and confident person in the world but everyone acts the same in the face of certain death
I swear I love a genuine reaction. There's something so pure about it whether it's happiness or sadness. Keep up the reviews ladies.
I watched this episode a million of times and I still cried along with you two. Amazing video. Thank you for all your works. ❤️
RIP Moblit.
this might be my favorite ep of the season just because of how captivating and emotionally striking it is despite there being little no action, even after seeing it dozens of times it still evokes those same emotions i had watching it in 2019
Mikasa crying ALWAYS gets me :( her voice actor oh my god
Becoming the "devil" and "sacrifising your humanity" to save everyone here is such a big theme since season 1 and thru the entire show and story
Hange and Levi were forced to suffer the same loss Mikasa and Eren would have. Erwin was their best friend as well.
Mikasa: his strength isn't all there. I can take it by force!
Narrator: she was not able to take it by force
George of the jungle vibes 😅
She probably could have but she wasn't willing to go as hard as she could have.
"his strenght isn't all here"

Season 1, 25 Episodes, 33 Manga Chapters
Season 2, 12 Episodes, 17 Manga Chapters
Season 3.1, 12 Episodes, 21 Manga Chapters
Season 3.2, 10 Episodes, 18 Manga Chapters
Season 4.1, 16 Episodes, 26 Manga Chapters
Season 4.2, ? Episodes, 23 Manga Chapters
So we can expect about 10 to 16 episodes for Season 4 Part 2.
I hope for 14 episodes at the very least because 12 episodes are not enough for all the stuff happening.
@@Zero-xf1pl My nightmare would be 12 very good and detailed adaptations of the manga, and the grand finale as a two-hour film 2023.
Episode 1: Judgment
Episode 2: A Fleeting Moment
Episode 3: From you, 2000 Years Ago
Episode 4: Island Devils
Episode 5: Sunset
Episode 6: Retrospective
Episode 7: Night of The End
Episode 8: Dawn for Humanity
Episode 9: The Rumbling
Episode 10: In The Depths of Despair
Episode 11: Devote Your Hearts
Episode 12: Toward the Tree on That Hill
These are my predictions, but i really hope theres more.

Also, just pause on the info cards, that's 100% fair for the reaction, everyone I knew who watched the show for the first time paused for the info cards, so don't feel like you can't take time to read it.
most reaction channels did not respond to bertholdt's death, some were even laughing, but you were the only one who cried.
I always really liked Bernard. I identify more with him than any other character for some reason. This episode crushed me.

If they go with only 10 episodes, then it's going to be pretty crammed / rushed.
it's not about right or wrong, it's always about choices
this also apply to Bert's death

About season 4 (no spoilers!): there is just SO MUCH to cover and SO DIFFICULT to animate that it’s impossible to do in 1 year. Hence the delays, CGI (which is okay in my opinion) and splitting the season into 2 parts.
Also, judging by the number of manga chapters left to animate, it will take another 10-12 episodes in season 4 part 2
I love it that you guys basically couldn't talk this entire episode

@@aephosphenes He said "Frieda's titan was superior to all other titans" and "Griesha was after the power of frieda's titan"

Such a tragic story where everyone is a victim of cruel world

I was mentall preparing myself for their reaction for DAYS and I broke down right after I saw the notification and the thumbnail. Bertholdt is just so underrated and so kind and his death is making me cry in the most ugly way possible.. Everytime. I'm surprised I haven't had a mental breakdown from seeing him die this often...
From here on now things becomes to get EVEN MORE SADDER AND DARKER. AOT in a nutshell 🖤
I don't understand why people still debate about the motivations behind Levi's choice when in the next episode he literally says:
"Let's be clear, I was the one who chose you.
To make everyone sadder: the song that plays during Armin’s Rebirth as the Colossal is called “ThanksAT” (Thanks, Attack Titan)
