    Another great tutorial! I've been using Freecad for several years now, but this series has really upped my game! Good pacing with a fabulous signal-to-noise ratio.

    I've been using FreeCad for years and I've learned more in the few videos so far in this tutorial series than I have all that time! Thank you Maker Tales

    I am just trying to get into Freecad after having to switch to Linux for my OS, as my old machine can't handle Windows, let alone Fusion. Your detailed content and easy to follow explanations make it so much more enjoyable to watch and learn from. Thank you. Can't wait for the next video

    Thank you for your awesome tutorials. I've been looking all over youtube but nowhere else found a tutorial series that's comprehensive and step by step. I'm very much looking forward for the next part

    The step of creating a mesh before exporting to STL was a game changer for me. I really appreciate it.

    This series is bound to become a standard goto tutorial for future me, when I forget parts of FreeCAD and want a quick refresher.
    Do you think crafting elaborate assemblies for laser cutting will at some point be in this series?

    • @Keep-Making
      @Keep-Making  3 года назад +4

      Hey Thomas, I'm not 100% sure if it will come in this exact series as it's in an experimental branch and all that jazz but it will 100% be coming to maker tales as I'm going to be doing a puzzle box or two in the future for laser cutting 😀

    Cool Tutorial. Following along and the difference between the part design and the part workspaces through me slightly, right at the very end. Was hunting for the union for a few minutes.

    Thanks for the amount of work you must have put into these tutorials. It's just really sad you had to. FreeCAD has some quirks that makes me want to scream.

    I am a novice and one suggestion in this video would be to remind us to "save" several time through out the project. Great tutorial series and thank you are all your hard work.

    Lots of concentrated information there. Thanks!
    I'll be watching this several times before I get my head completely around it!
    I must say, though, that I pefer PrusaSlicer with the default build plate displayed rather than just a grid. It saves me having to look around for the corner origin when placing parts for printing.

    Well FreeCAD 0.2 has been released and I can confirm that... you still need the realthunder edition to complete this tutorial:
    * FreeCAD 0.2 doesn't have the enhanced External Geometry combo button so you don't have "Add/toggle defining geometry" available as an option.
    * When it comes time to do the Lid_Base sketch FreeCAD 0.2 correctly shows the geometry from both of the Box_Base and Box_Hole sketches, but you can only (sometimes) select edges and points from Box_Hole, and can never select edges and points from Box_Base.
    Oh well...

      This Video explains how to correctly use Shape Binder to achieve the same goal with only a minor change to the workflow, using bodies in place of parts.

    11:57 - I had to watch that 2-3 times before I understood what was going on. He hit the "External Geometry" icon, and use that to add that reference point to the corner. I was trying to follow along and was wondering how that point appeared there magically. This is really worth understanding.

    Looking forward to more direct reference modeling lessons which being a hobbyist, is the way I’d like to model. I mainly use Design Spark Mechanical which is strictly direct modeling and sometimes is a pain when you need to make a change to the design because it doesn’t have a history.
    Great, great lesson.

    I discovered you channel about a week ago and I am consuming all your videos. They are really well made. So, thank you so much for this, it is helping me a lot. A question tho, do you use more blender or freecad for 3D printing? That's my goal, and I am learning both, but since you have much much more experience, eventually I'll have to concentrate my efforts into just one software.

  • @manuel56354
    @manuel56354 3 года назад

    Nice to find your channel and your FreeCad videos. The software will surely get better and eventually become the standard if it gets more traction both from users and developers. Your videos are the bridge towards that.

    Great Vid - Here goes my first 3D Print from FreeCAD. I use Simplify 3D to slice, has always given me good results on my Ender 3.
    Have you thought about building this series as a Coursera course? That's where I paid to take Fusion 360 intro lessons. Not sure if people make real money doing Coursera, but you may want to consider that.

    Great video ,I'm new and didn't know this method , but why would you do this what advantages ( and disadvantages) does it have over the spreadsheet method, which seems similar and in some regards easier .

    A year on, and *most* of the info is still great. But I'm having an issue with the keyboard shortcuts not working. I can workaround with the toolbar, but "Shift-V" claims I've already got a locked dimension once the symmetry is established; and "R" definitely doesn't start a rectangle. Not sure what's happening. Of course, it could be something else, but I really haven't done anything other than this video and the one before it. But still glad to see such hard work going into this!
    NOTE: These are minor issues with workarounds.

    In some parts of the Midwest US, "thang" is a euphemism for "penis." I can't help it, but the 10-year-old in me still giggles a little bit every time you say the name of your sponsor.

    Is there a way to copy and paste previous work? For instance, supposing at 10:42, if you wanted to copy the Body from the old part without having to re-do all the work, can you copy Box and Box Body from the earlier model to the new one? I realize that for this tutorial it's useful to repeat the steps, to remind people how it's done. But I've been looking for a way to do this, and haven't found it yet. Other than copying and renaming the file outside FreeCAD and opening it again and deleting the later steps, of course. It's easy to get messed up with multiple sketches, pads and pockets, too.. Haven't got the hang of working with the element hierarchy tree, then again I've just gotten started.

    Say I modelled some aluminium extrusion profile. Then I want to model a 3D printer (or a desk, enclosure, shelf etc) using that modelled profile. Will you cover such a topic?

    Errata: At 20:24 you say "Part Design workbench" but you click on the "Part workbench". I was following along mostly listening and couldn't find the Union tool until I looked carefully at the video to see the workbench name discrepency.

    If after finishing to the Fusion (Meshed) point I change the Box_Base constraint from 75mm to something else, shouldn't the size change throughout all the pieces of the model?

    In this video at 11:53 you want us to click and select 'Reference External Geometry', unfortunately my icon doesn't have a dropdown, when hi-lited it says, "Create an edge linked to an external geometry (X)" and that's it, no choices?. What to do? BTW, I really enjoy your videos and am learning a lot, thank you.

    i have a question.. when i have created a box with few holes on different faces and want to change a hole size, why my others holes sketches become crazy? (the references of my holes are the borders of each side and i use the latest freeCAD version).. sometime a hole sketch is lost in an other axis and i can’t figure what i do wrong!! ..it’s about the arborescence/sequence of my sketches??

      Sounds like you've run into the topological naming bug, which the latest version of the normal FreeCAD still suffers from. If you want to follow this series, he uses the Realthunder branch of FreeCAD which largely fixes this issue. You can find the link to it in the notes of this video.

    • @CollinBaillie
      @CollinBaillie 3 года назад +1

      If you want to watch a video discussing this issue, and why he is using the Realthunder link version, he made a video: ruclips.net/video/QSsVFu929jo/видео.html
