Why is there no offset command in sketcher?
how you make 2d sheet with 3d part in corner ?
For absolute noobs like me, who followed step by step and got a TON of errors and frustration, make sure the "Auto-remove-redundants" is selected under the constraints panel. This is my 3rd time looking at FreeCAD, and these little things being left out of tutorials is exactly why beginners give up. This is a 9 min video and I spent 30 mins struggling to figure that out. That's a 3x cost. This speaks to both the institutional knowledge that experienced users forget, as well as generally bad default workflow settings. It's clear after understanding how constraints work now, that he has this setting enabled, as you see the symmetrical constraint ID change from 5 to 4 in this video. So removing redundant constraints is critical to complete this exercise but left out by the author
Oh man did I struggle with this redundancy issue myself.... thanx for the solution!
Thanks to your posting I managed to get past a real stumbling block. I posted above before I read your post. ;)
Unreal! Thank you for posting this! I am screaming at the computer.... so true, I have been using AutoCad for close to 30 years. I "use" Fusion 360 etc. exactly what you said, one simple thing to change on the constraints. I almost removed the FreeCad app from my computer.
Exactly! The teacher's task here is not to create obstacles. This is not figure out yourself type deal. If you teach. You show clearly step-by-step. Or don't show at all! I hate teachers who think they teach but actually waste time. 👊💥☠
because they keep changing the software too much between each edition.
Thank you, your tutorial is outstanding - practicing one by one... thanks...
Thanks a lot man !
I enjoyed this tutorial a lot! Thanks.
I enjoy making these for all people out there 🙏
Does Freecad support the use of a 3D motion controller in Ubuntu?
The exercise was clear and easy. I found it to be a good introduction into Freecad 0.20, thank you.
My friend, I don't know if someone has told you yet or not, but "tangent" in English is pronounced "tan - jent". I am just getting started with FreeCAD and really love your content. I know about your PayPal and LiberaPay links - do you have a Patreon as well?
tangent is the one you get with the drink tang.
🤯I had no idea you tap the "m" in the poly-line tool.
I drew a diamond with the poly-line tool and trimmed the corners. I my opinion that's even faster. But I agree the "m" key should be way more visible for how useful it is.
@@schogaia Yep- that is how I have done it for years. I like having this new option.
Great you can still learn something new here!
I'm glad that you are back and continuing the Freecad education. Your videos are so clear and easy to follow. They are much appreciated.
One thing that I want to mention is your pronunciation of the word tangent. Like a lot of non-native English speakers you pronounce tangent based on the way it is spelled. Your pronunciation of the G in tangent is not the way the letter G is pronounced in German. In tangent it is pronounced like the letter J sounds. Tangent sounds like tan-jent. The gent is pronounced like in the word gentlemen.
English is a horrible language when it comes to how it is spoken compared to how it is written. Part of the problem is that the language was still evolving after the spelling was defined.
Your English is extremely good. Other than a few words (eg. tangent, diameter) it would be unlikely for anyone to thing that you were not a native English speaker.
Thanks for the feedback!
I'm trying my best to get the English right. I watch A LOT of English videos, sports, and all kinds of stuff but unfortunately I hardly hear these kinds of words there. :-)
The word "tangent" comes from the Latin word "tangere" which means "touch". In its original form it's pronounced G like in "goal" in Latin and also in German, so it was a wrong guess to spell it this way also in English :D . But for the next videos I will try to get it right. I also listened to some examples how to pronounce "diameter". I'm really glad for the feedback and happy to improve.
Thanks so much!
@@FreeCADAcademy Yes your English is quite good except for a few mix-ups between soft and hard sounds. But very understandable.
I like that you speak loud enough and rarely that I can understand with my English. You are doing a wonderful thing.
Thank you for your positive feedback! I'm glad to hear that my speaking volume and pace are clear and easy to understand, even for non-native English speakers.
I strive to make my content accessible to as many viewers as possible, and I'm always happy to receive feedback and suggestions on how I can improve.
Thank you for watching my videos, and I wish you the best of luck with your FreeCAD journey!
I tried to follow along, and found most of my problems were self-inflicted and not paying enough attention. But for a newbie, it was my first part! The errors taught me so much also. A big thank you for the series.
Great video. Thank you. My only problem was "Auto Remove Redundants" was not selected by default for me, so it would eventually throw an error when trying to apply constraint.
Ok great video! Lovely explain it! I have more than 1 hour on this exercise, I was getting stuck on horizontal constrain 😢, which was a bit frustrating, for some reason after I was doing symmetrical constrain the horizontal constrain was invalid, for some reason I was getting some sort of error ,, datum 60mm for the constrain with index 7 is invalid,,. However the solution was to do the horizontal constrain first then symmetrical constrain, don’t ask me how I figured out this 🤷♂️ I just tried, well to say true I was making some research and some other people were saying something that some previous constrain will not allow the actual one you’re trying to make especially for horizontal don’t know why! Is my first try on 3D Cad creation
But I you said ,, Practice is the best teacher,,
Thank you!
When I tried to set the symmetry, I got an error. I didn't have "Auto remove redundant" turned on.
Who will have an error, check this moment.
Thanks for the lessons.
Thanks for the heads up! I hope I mentioned to use this option in my previous basic course parts but I cannot be 100% sure. Will have to check this
@@FreeCADAcademy It is quite possible that they mentioned this item :-) I enjoy watching and learning. I uninstalled version 0.19 and installed 0.20. The default setting may change. I didn't notice that little mark right away :-)
It was a good video. I had a hard time with it because I forgot about 'm' on the polyline to create the curved lines, so I tried to use line segments and curves individually. Also, I was not sure how to make cut outs, and did not realise I did not have to do anything other then draw the shapes inside.
Great you learned something from it! Best regards
Tried a few tutorials really like this one, others go at a break net speed and are almost incoherent even when there first language is English or they um and arh too much and obviously have not planed the tutorial. This is well thought out and very clear and should not only be a tutorial for using FreeCad but be a guide on how to deliver a video tutorial.
Dead on. I watched a tutorial right before this, and couldn't understand any of the English spoken with his thick "no rice and curry" Indian accent.
Thanks for this! I struggled with the sketch, drawing circles and lines for the outline, and using symmetry a lot, then trimming. Somehow I got over-constraints, and tangency broke coincidence, and so on. What an elegant tool the polyline is! Although it did not always create tangency between straights and circles, not sure why I had to add some tangencies afterwards.
me too.
I love your work Flowie, I started 2 months ago and eagerly await your new videos. Thanks
Keep up the good work!!
Videos awesome easy to follow but I keep coming up with redundant constraints on #5 tring to make two outer circles run symmetric to center line. I'm following along with ease so it must be one of my setting I'm not sure cam you help. Lol thanks
My 3 circles turn red with vertical line green.
i kept running into a "redundant constraint" error for some reason,. Apparently creating the second small circle (right) (constraint 4) needed to be deleted before i could continue to constrain the small circle distance from the large... once i figured that out it all came together. i ran it from the start a number of times and it kept occuring, looks like some kind of glitch or something...
I faced the same exact issue! Thank you for the tip! Are just weird issues common to all cad software? CAD newbie here. The tutorial's explanation made sense , not sure why the software showed otherwise...
2weeks ago I was terrified to try any CAD apart from Tinkercad, You have opened up a whole new world to me, Very easy to understand and follow ,Thank you so much.
I thought this was a great video with the right amount of difficulty for a first project to try on your own after watching your other videos, I would like to see a video where we learn more complex shapes that aren't just extruded 2d shapes.
Yep that’s why it is exercise one 💪🏻
Very Easy. With your 2 vids, I was able to make my first part, this one. It was very simple to follow your tutorial. it was clear, straight forward and detailed. TY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cant wait to do more an learn more from your tutorials.
1 question on the flaw in FreeCAD being the naming issue? Is this issue pretty much cured in the newer Versions of FreeCAD< or should a newb like myself be looking at the Thunder version of it?
Thanks much again!
Thanks for you Support.
Answering your question:
The so called topological naming problem is a very nasty thing in FreeCAD. There are several strategies to cope with it. First you can try and work around it as much as possible. This will teach you to create as little dependencies between geometries as possible but be warned: this only works to a certain extend. Sometimes there are situations where you will find yourself using features like chamfers and fillets on 3D geometries and then all of a sudden your models become unstable. But you will learn a lot in the process.
You could also switch to the Realthunder Linkstage3 branch which eliminated most of this problem but then it’s up to you how you handle incompatibilities between Main and Linkstage3 - you don’t need to exchange files with others? Fine then this might be the right choice. Option 3 is to move completely from FreeCAD and go with a different software like Shapr3D, Onshape, Solid Edge etc. but that depends on your needs and expectations- this cannot be answered for all users ! :-) good luck and enjoy my content also in the future
I have watched all of your German lessons to improve my CAD. I am German and live 25 years in the US now and like to state that your English is very good especially no long ahhhhh and pauses, very fluent. Looking forward to learn more FreeCad also for the CAM workbench.
Thanks for your positive feedback Joerg!
In the following months I want to dive a little bit deeper into CAM and manufacturing things!
The only annunciation that had me scratching my head for a minute was Tangent.
The 'G' is pronounced like the 'G' in Gentlemen.
Other than that very easiy to follow along and understand the content.
Thank you very much for these leasons.
I am embarassed about the amount of air watch time you got from me on this.. after quite few trips back in.. can do this project from start to finish.. meaning I have alson now learned to export as an STL file & print. I did a 70% scale reduction in print & this little flange is now my keychain as a reminder it was my very first project. on to the next one. THANK YOU!
very clear thank you. I am a blender user. Being totally new to cad programing, I wonder if you can suggest the very basic video- layout tool, setup
Horrible software! Completely non intuitive.
There are plenty of alternatives
Thank you for the lesson. It was done very well and I enjoyed working through it. I ended up with one (1) degree of freedom and I could not figure out how to clear it. It had to do with the right side hole,. I know that because it was different color than the other lines. I know that I connected the two (2) small holes to be equal distance from the vertical axis because both holes had arrows pointing toward each other. The only thing I could think of was that the right hole may not have been on the horizontal axis. I had "snap on" so that doesn't make sense. I think I will start over untill I get the exercise right. GREAT JOB!!!
Well . Danke. Subscribed.
Danke!!
4:46 I get "Datum 60.00mm for the constraint with index 7 is invalid"
Any help would greatly be appreciated
same problem bro
the issue got solved when i removed the centre constraint from one of the small circle
I am working in learning FreeCad and have watched lots of videos. Your block of instruction was the best so fare, informative and simple for old minds like me. Thank you for the encouragement and the lesson.
I started to follow the Freecad Academy videos in order, so far I have learn a lot. Just got done with this exercise, and now I'm headed to the next Video. Thanks for the education. I'm loving it...
Thanks for your great tutorial. Can I also teach you something? When you pronounce 'tangent' it is actually pronounced more like 'Tanjent', similarly to 'general' or 'gentlemen' (jeneral and jentlemen). I look forward to working through your amazing tutorials. Thanks so much for posting them.
This is a great exercise for beginners. I had a few problems at first, but after I found out what commands are called, what they looked like, I was able to easily do this exercise.
In previous companies I worked for I used Pro-Engineer (CREO) and Inventor for the 3D modeling software. Since I cannot afford these programs for home use, this program is perfect. I have to learn what FreeCAD calls there commands, since each software calls them different names.
I love your stye and excellent english - BUT, version 21.2 behaves differently. When I tried to constrain the upper and lower arcs to the center - I got errors. No matter what i did it would not let me constrain. So I started again with the outside sketch first, then the circles and everytning worked ok.
This video is awesome!!! I had such a hard time fumbling with this program, this made it super easy to understand and actually make a drawing with demonstration of useful commands. Thank you!!
I'm 6hrs in learning FreeCAD coming from fusion 360. I completed the exercise and it's being printed. Great lessons. Looking forward to more. I was at the level in Fusion of hard surface modelling not an expert at hard surface modelling. Hope it's easier here!
Which do you prefer? I'm trying to decide if I'm going to invest my time in Fusion360 or Freecad this year.
I have drawn the circles and input the radius. The CIRCLES do NOT DISPLAY ... the radius does but NO circles ??
@FreeCADAcademy the tutorial is great. How ever whenever I use the symmetrize operator, I keep having the Recompute Failed! pop up and I cannot proceed past the issue. i have to Ctrl + Z to go back. What is the solution to that issue? I'm currently running 0.21.1
Thanks for the video. I notice that you have these exercises for 0.20 but seem to only have tutorials for 0.19.1. Do you have a tutorial for 0.20 available in other places? Or are you thinking about adding a 0.20 tutorial to YT. If not, what are the main differences between 0.19.1 and 0.20? Are there things you show in the 0.19.1 tutorial that either won't work in 0.20 or work differently? Appreciate any guidance. Thanks.
[code]
OS: Windows 10 Version 2009
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.20.1.29410 (Git)
When I click the center of the left circle and then the right Circle then the Center line. When I press >< (constrain symmetrical) all three circles turn wrong color and I get error message in the Report view "Recompute failed! Please check report view.". Suggestions?
This was very frustrating till I figured out in the Combo View tab that you must have "Auto Remove Redundants" and "Auto Update" checked. They are not selected by default and everything breaks. I do like your videos though. I am finding them very informative. I was expecting the solution to be parametric and I admit I got stuck trying to do that instead of just making a simple flange. How would you recommend adding a tube coming up from the flange? And is it possible to add threads?
Tube:
Sweep operation with a profile on top of the flange (not on the 3D face but with parameters and based on the standard plane, and a path going normal to this profile)
Threads: Hole operation with threads. But won't be visible unless you have the latest 0.20 TechDraw which has thread symbols
Thank's a lot for education. Definetly FreeCAD functions seems smart and better than Kompass 3D.
the fact that AutoDesk Fusion 360 is down... something about their Identity service going down, is unacceptable service. Can't even work offline. It's a major disruption on productivity. I've decided to learn on another app that seems reliable.
Got to Symmetry and using 0.21 all circles turned Orange. Now constrain 60mm gave me what looks like an error code on the bottom of the page.
So Symmetry seems verboten to me, so I have to do without it. Anybody knows what went wrong?
As a neophyte,(have not designed one part yet!) one problem I am having, while trying to use CAD tutorials, is my FreeCAD screen never looks like the FreeCAD screen used by the instructor. All the stuff along the top is never the same. Sometimes the command the instructor clicks on is either grayed out or is not there at all! And sometimes my screen has command icons his screen does not show.
Also, the info in the left side ‘Combo View’ is different. His will show ‘unnamed’, mine will show ‘Body’.
Another problem I have is when the instructor says he is doing sometime but does not tell you how he got there! As an example:”We are going to start in the ‘Part Design’ environment…..very important. And we start by creating a new body and a new sketch in this body.”. He is quickly clicking along without showing in detail(click by click) how he gets there or why. It is not possible to follow his rapid mouse clicks or see his keyboard entries so, I end up with a completely different looking screen...not able to move forward.
Can anyone help me get over this protuberance, so I can design a 3D part?
I am using FreeCAD 0.20.
I'm just getting started with freecad and have found this and your old .19 videos very helpful! Looking forward to more!
the 0.19.3 is still listed as the current stable version on the FreeCAD website, so it can still be very useful. and the 0.20 has some nice but smaller changes. :)
Using the latest version (0.20.2) and things did not work as shown in your video. But I managed to finish the sketch, only when I closed the sketch, it disappeared even when I zoomed to fit. I'm used to Inventor, have used it since 2004. This program operates very differently as I would expect. But it seems to have some bugs in this version. Comments? Thanks for your help. God bless and stay well.
Other than your butchering of English words like poly and tangent, especially tangent, it was a good video.
Phew! I found it quite difficult especially dealing with the constraint errors. Creating the polyline and the arcs took me awhile as well, but I finally managed to finish. I might have to do this a few more times before I can figure out what I am doing.
Man your video makes soooo much sense!!! Thank you soooo much when I start making money trust me I’ll thank you properly!!!!
Is it a "mission" to export all your preferences settings for FreeCAD 0.20 and provide this at the git-hub exercises to import these preferences so it is quick and easy to setup our systems to match your video and FreeCAD environment settings? Similarly done for the "Flowwie's secret FreeCAD 0.19 color scheme" I see v0.20 has some additional sketcher colour parameters for Constrained and Unconstrained.
I got this exercise to work thanks largely to the advice given by @GregorySchwartzkopf. But I am confused as to how the app knows that the circles we drew would be holes that when through the entire part? I mean they could have been meant to be indented circles that didn't go through the entire body of the part.
I've tried following the video step by step. At 4:48 I'm getting "Datum 60.00 mm for the constraint with index 7 is invalid" error. I have FreeCAD version 0.20 with revision number 29177. No idea if/what I'm doing something wrong, a bit discouraging as an absolute beginner.
edit: After reading some comments down below and a bit Googling, I've fixed it by making sure the checking "Auto remove redundants" option while setting up the constraints. Hope it helps someone.
My first attempt was to draw three larger circles and then join them with lines, then create the holes inside of that. Cut away the lines I don't need, That worked ok, but it's hard to exactly determine where the lines should connect to the outer circles. I also tried with Arcs, but that was much harder. I didn't even think of the polyline! That looked much easier. I'm more familiar with OpenSCAD, so I need to change my mindset a bit to do this kind of CAD
this helped me a lot! Looking forward for the new videos... keep up the good work!
Next week - next video!
Thanks for the support !
It worked well until I started to draw the polyline. Pressing "M" did nothing at all. (v20.2). I managed to complete the task using straight lines and arcs.
I think I followed the tutorial exactly but when I get to the part where you click the symmetrical constraint I get 4 Redundant constraints. Maybe I need to try again from scratch or version 0.21 doesnt work the same.
Great video. This part is similar to what I need in my first freecad project which. Got some errors because I choose different measurements. But it adds to the learning. Thanks 😊
Great Tutorial.
Finally forced from Fusion to FreeCAD... I've done like 5 tutorials, and each one I run into the same problem that is never echoed in these tutorials.
I have a "fully constrained sketch" a simple rectangle. (4x coincident, 2x vertical, 2x horizontal, fixed vertical, fixed horizontal, and either centered around origin, or corner on the origin)
No matter what i do, when I click "update" and "close" the sketch, no sketch ever shows up in the main viewer, from what i can tell all "parent" items (Body, or body and part) and the sketch itself is toggled "visible"... I can never see the sketch until I double click on the sketch i.e. to edit it...
What did I miss?
thanks for your time
Thanks for these, I'm just starting out with CAD after doing traditional 3D modeling for ages.
But as I try to follow along with you here and I do exactly what you do to Symmetrize at 4:32 I get this error message (Recompute failed!), what am I doing wrong. I should tell you I'm on a newer version of FreeCad as will V. 021.2.
Solution, this comment below was crucial to be able to finish this.

For absolute noobs like me, who followed step by step and got a TON of errors and frustration, make sure the "Auto-remove-redundants" is selected under the constraints panel./.../
But it's not visibel in V 02.21without clicking the wrench next to the constraints panel.
I have tried twice now & both times Freecad 20.1 has crashed completely & turned off. Unfortunately I cannot recall exactly what i did wrong. But it was something to do with the tangents & radii on the L hand side. as I was editing the poly line. I am running W11 on firefox.
Amazing! I just had to fix the ""Datum xx mm for the constraint with index xx is invalid" issue. I followed the tip given on this video: ruclips.net/video/FaVLVg65gl8/видео.html
Great video. Took me 4 hours the first time. I thought something was wrong with new version since I kept getting weird errors so installed 0.19 instead of 0.21. Same thing. I finally managed to get it done though and it only took an hour the second time. Thanks for all the help with this video.
It was very easy with your help yes :). At first I found this program daunting but am beginning to click.
I am trying to do this on version 0.20.2 and my sketches keep disappearing when I close the task bar and try to PAD. Anyone have any ideas what I might be doing wrong?
I had a problem with the second 24 mm circle. If I place it exactly over the line, it create a coincidence constraint which give problem when place the symmetry constrain. I removed it then symmetry worked fine. (freecad .19)
Hi, I am trying to learn freecad through your video. I have freecad 0.20.2 version and it seems to be little bit different than what you are showing me and I can't find the constraint arc button. Do you know where that is?
I tried to follow this step by step with freecad 0.20.1 (29410 git). But some constraints result in a popup saying that the constraint is invalid. starting with the two smaller circles. They are both constraint to the same distance from the vertical axis, but then i can not constrain it to 60mm. if i delete the constraint for equal distance, i can constraint them individually. But then later, i can not constrain the radius of the left and right arc. why not?
it is these things that i give up on freecad every time i try to do a tutorial. I really want to learn this, but every time it seems to behave differently. This should not be different between version 0.20.0 and 0.20.1
I retired from CAD/CAM manufacturing using AutoCad 2000 this is totally different. I place all the circle and radius at which point I was lost. Years ago I do that and then draw lines tangent to circles and trim away the unwanted stuff. I am sure there is probably a way to do it but I will do it your way right now. What is that green vertical line in your demonstration as it does not appear on mine after I enter sketch mode?
New to Freecad - this is a great first exercise! The content is clear and easy to follow. Great work, thank you!
When doing Constrain symmetrical I get a recompute failed! every time. Followed to the letter yet can't go any farther. Please help. I have the latest FreeCad
I tried FreeCAD for the first time. I could get the three circles fully confined. But the polyline would not get it's shit together. XD I might be on a different version. What version is best/easiest to learn on?
I am getting this error(recompute failed) whenever i am using the constrain symmetrical. How to solve this issue
more instruction videos where you do not show everything like deleting one of the constraints 4:29. Please , if you are going to make a introductory video on how to use this product, DONT skip anything.
Meanwhile how do I correct Over constrained events
Just search for the constraints that are faulty and delete them.
Usually I recommend to avoid setting up an overconstraint
Thank you Flowwie.
Not too much problem but did need help a little especial the constrain tamget to get last pont of the polyline correct. I was also blind as bat for the radii of the outer arcs. All I could see was them as diameters of the circle. Then I noticed the big circle had two differing measurements. Talk about a facepalm moment.
So from what I have learned in your tutorials this is either/both the easiest CAD software to use or it is because of your teaching making it seem easy. I will say it is the later.
Excellent video very helpful and easy to follow. I find with any cad its how to start, basically the first 5 steps and once your there you can play. The only question I have is, is there an easy way to change orientation of the model, no mater how many times i clicked on the top right box i could not get it the same as yours. Is there a way to move it around with the mouse.
Thanks for the demonstration of cad 0.20.
Why on earth did they name it a Pad command rather than Extrude? Otherwise very similar to SolidWorks. Might give this a try.
just starting your beginner flange but the when FreeCad is loaded there is no combo Box ?? Found it under View > Panels > Select Combo View towards bottom of view list
I managed to succeed twice, once doing it my own way, the second attempt i did it the way as shown in the video. In my first attempt i use the trimming tool. which although did work left me with 1 edge that somehow didn't get fully constrained because it added something it shouldn't have. (like said in an earlier tutorial that trimming can add more constraints than intended). However i could still pad it an add the fillet.
The second attempt i followed along with the video and it made it much easier and was much more clearn of what i should do or could do next time.
Amazingly clear and easy to understand tutorial.
commented on the wrong video! This was a great exercise and a valuable learning experience. Great work and i look forward to learning more as I am new to CAD,
Im missing the bottom row of bottons. I dont have the measure lines button or the line up vertices button. I have version 20. How can I change this?
When I close it out after finishing the sketch it disappears??? The sketch says fully constrained. It goes to Parts design but nothing is in the window when the sketch is selected.
Thanks so much
Why when I am trying to draw a circle or aquare cannot happen because the xyz axis keep rolling in space as I move the mouse ?
Im so impressed at being able to build something like this, ok it didnt go quite the same as your example. But I understand where I went wrong
Your videos are very informative, I'm learnign so much. Many thanks
You’re welcome buddy
got it now wow that was great I want to learn more please. I really want to use this for designing my own RC airplane plans. these will mostly be 2D plans I can print out. Thank you so much for your lesson I will look for more from you you are easy to listen to and explain real good. thx again.
This was a great tutorial, Ihave just started using CAD, and this was easy as pie, thanks for your help
Thank you!
Easy to follow.how toy get the colors and appearance to look so nice.
Steve marshall
I ended up doing 2 sketches because I didn't realize that if you pad it out it would automatically create holes.
thanks for the exmaple. It seems to keep adding a very short segment between one of the arcs and the straight part where the tangent is created (not the last one but some other one). (I'm using 0.20.1)
Thanks Kumail Nanjiani love your work appreciate the tips!
how do you insert screw threads? Surely you wouldnt send a part to manufacture with threads missing
Excellent for Beginners, Thank You !!!.😀😀
in my case, the object cannot be a fully constrain
I try and try, repeat, but failed,
