  • Join me on another camp in the beautiful English Lake District. As usual the weather was a bit unpredictable in these mountains. Aside from a few rain showers, fog, and wind, the skies eventually clear and I'm able to find a beautiful spot to pitch the tent with a great view of the surrounding mountains. Hope you enjoy watching!

    I came across your channel by accident but will definitely be watching more. I agree with a lot of comments about how good your videos are and enjoyable to watch. I've suffered greatly years ago with two kidney stones, OMG, I can confirm that it was the worst pain I have endured in a lifetime of sports and outdoors injuries. Apparently, dehydration is a big factor, so taking on water regularly even when not walking is important. Keep hydrated, and looking forward to more of your videos.

      Welcome to the channel! Really happy to hear you are enjoying the vides. I haven't always been great about drinking enough water while at home but after that stone, I DEFINITELY make more of an effort to drink more water now. Never want that to happen again. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you have a nice week!

    You are very good at this. One of the best. No hysteria or repetitive unnecessary commentary and no ego. I get the cooking thing. I love it too. Even on day hikes I get the stove out. My wife says she can't understand all the hassle, but the enjoys the results. That's a great walk too, familiar to us. Outstanding vistas beautifully captured. Thank you.

      @@GoingSoloOutdoors if you fancy a place with the missus and kids we have stayed at High Swinklebank Farm for 14 yrs now once or twice a year. I think it is still £330 in the school holidays. Working sheep farm in a less visited valley. Kindly folks. The Park is otherwise rather expensive in peak season. Highly recommended. Peace.

    Nothing better than a coffee and spending 49 minutes of my morning watching the best hiking channel.
    The weather here is utterly nuts. We had 100kph wind storm a week ago which rippes out trees on the property and we spent 4 days with machines cleaning up.
    I bought a Mont Supercell 4 season tent the day before and was going to pitch it. Lucky I didnt.
    Mont is an Australian brand and if you like tents worth considering. Id love to see one being used in the UK.

      Welcome to the channel. The filming and editing definitely takes a bit of extra work, but it will be really nice one day when I can look back at these trips. Just happy others can enjoy them as well. I am wearing the REI Rainier jacket. It’s lightweight and relatively cheap. It’s only a 2.5 layer jacket so it will eventually wet out in long downpours, but it works well for just short sporadic showers. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you’re having a nice weekend.

    Excellent once again .
    I have family who live in the States ( Carolinas and the Gulf - Destin area , Niceville ) and have spent a lot of time there myself .
    What would you say the main differences are ( apart from the weather ) regarding safety , equipment , e.t.c in comparison to the UK .
    Have always wanted to do the Apalachian Trail myself .
    Brilliant channel and look forward to your next one

    • @GoingSoloOutdoors
      @GoingSoloOutdoors  2 месяца назад

      Thank you! I would say the main difference is animals. They are absolutely zero concern here in the UK. I used to camp in areas that had many bears back in the states so I would have to cook away from my tent and hang a bear bag when camping. Other animals like raccoons and rodents were also a nuisance at times. So because I don’t have to worry about animals here, wind and rain are always my top concern when going out for a camp here in the UK especially when I’m camping in exposed areas like I do in the lake District and in Snowdonia. I never worried about wind too much in the states because typically there are trees around which disrupt most of those winds. I would just have to find a spot near healthy trees. Really appreciate your comment. I hope that answered your question.

    • @ShaunYoung-i3j
      @ShaunYoung-i3j 2 месяца назад

      @GoingSoloOutdoors Absolutely and so thoroughly.

    While hiking, one of the most difficult decisions a hiker must make is when to STOP & add or remove layers of clothing.
    7:17; Excellent video of you boulder hopping UP
    Delta pegs are far more secure than the pegs that come with the tent. Hopefully, you'll put a big heavy rock atop each delta peg to insure they don't pull out of the ground in the middle of the night.
    Excellent, taut pitch! & with the footprint. I've ALWAYS left both ends open for ventilation. Were your vents at each end of the tent open or closed?
    You eat better than anyone on youtube. Watching you fix your meals is one of my attractions to you & your channel.
    Your Enan will take far more strong gusty winds than you give it credit for. I KNOW because I'm often at 9,000'-10,000' elevation in the high Sierras where it is almost always strong gusty windy.
    The Enan tent floor & footprint are both bulletproof 70D triple coated material - floor material doesn't get any better. I've never felt the need to double pole & don't even have one.
    MSR makes a much better metal pot holder with much longer leg extensions.
    So many of your meals include Salad onions. And Salmon is my preferred meat protein.
    36:00 The drone footage added excellent perspective to your campsite & surroundings
    Bummer - on your sleeping pad.
    Pole shock cord isn't included in the repair kit. I called & asked Hilleberg for a length which they sent me. Well worth having, just in case.
    Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.

      The Enan is definitely my favorite tent when I want to go lightweight. I love the delta pegs. Sometimes I will put a stone on the Delta pegs if the conditions are absolutely terrible, but I’ve actually never had them pulled out even with no stone on top in very strong winds. Definitely great pegs to have for any tent that requires tension to pitch. I always leave the vents at the ends of the tent open as well. I’ve actually never closed them even in windy, rainy conditions, and I’ve had no issues. You mentioned that you don’t think I give the Enan enough credit in the wind. I definitely think it has the strongest strength to weight ratio of any single pole tent I have used. I’ve had it in 50 mph winds myself and it survived. However, it is still only a single pole tent, and even though it can survive strong winds, I have other options that are much better suited for conditions that are extremely windy. Especially if I don’t want to deal with any fabric blowing about near my head while sleeping. It is nice to know I can still trust this tent if the weather does make a turn for the worst. That’s why I felt comfortable pitching it in a location that was a bit exposed once I got an updated weather report. Glad you liked the drone footage. I always like to use the drone because I can give the viewer a better sense of my surroundings in the video. As always, I really appreciate and look forward to your comments. Take care 😃

    Your outdoor culinary skills are well impressive. I did question the why bother? but i now realize its not about the convenience, its about the whole experience and when you are so well preparared - as you are, then I totally get it. The reward is so amplified. Also, when i look at those mountains with their soft weathered ridge lines I think oold ancient rock formations.

    Watching you using the enan has got me thinking. I currently use the mld duomid xl in summer and love it.. so roomy and so lightweight. Winter I use the southern cross 2 and really like that too, sturdy and room for my border collie, problem is its heavy, twice the weight of the enan in fact. Anyway my question is, in your opinion, would you say the enan is up to winter camping in Uk only. Great video and you certainly struck lucky with the weather 👌

    • @GoingSoloOutdoors
      @GoingSoloOutdoors  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks! I was really happy the weather cleared in the evening so I got to enjoy a bit of time outside the tent. I personally don’t use the Enan in the winter because the ends of the tent are mesh panels and provide a good bit of airflow throughout the tent. In the winter, I prefer to have a tent that’s a bit more enclosed and larger. Especially when it’s potentially wet and windy for many hours. I think the southern Cross 2 that you’re using is better suited for winter than the Enan. According to Hillberg the Enan is a three season tent. However, like most Hilleberg tents this tent is built very well and is definitely capable for winter use if there’s no snow and you don’t mind a cold draft. But I’d personally stick to the tent you’re using. Hope that answers your question.

    The good life in a Hilleberg Hilton. It is what it is. When have white caps on a tarn of water it may be time to move to a new homesite. Beautiful place good or bad weather. That sauce has to be delicious. Scottish salmon, just from Scotland. Pretty nice when you get up and there's no frost or snow, fairly dry, what's not to like. Nescafe, Azure, little kick coffee. Or Africafe, run back to the car.. Great feeling when that BB drops into the water. Good fortune with the other one. Cranberry juice, lots water. I have issues with mine, sweating is bad and have done way too much of that of late. Runs my function levels down. You better have some percocets with you. Too damn far to crawl and no one to hear. I will be 69 in about a month. 41 is young but things start to change around then. Wife goes crazy with the change, younger women start looking better, arms aren't long enough to read the new stove directions. All part of it. Then you wake up one day and you are sixty. All good. This year the soles of my Scarpa boots fell off mid hike (as too did my daughters the other day), and my gaiters lost elasticity. Anyway, bought the new Zamberlains from the Keswick boot Co (great people and best advice), and chose the 4 season tent for its rugged design etc. i cant go through another tent/boot failure. Having a boot failure is a big deal in that situation. I have been fortunate and haven’t had too many gear failures over the years. I did have a popular (and expensive) US brand tent fail on me in harsh weather once before. Fortunately it was warm enough and it just made things uncomfortable. But gear failures can definitely cut a trip short or put you at serious risk depending on the type of gear that’s failed and the conditions. One of the reasons I use Hilleberg tents more often than not is just because they have proven their reliability time and time again. It’s nice to have one less thing to worry about because you can trust it even if the conditions make a turn for the worst. ATB
