  • A corner of the Amazon that had been cleared and used as farmland has been restored to rainforest.

The man who owns it, Omar Tello, gave up his job as an accountant and spent 40 years recreating a patch of pristine forest in Ecuador, stretching just a few hundred metres in each direction.
He’s trying to encourage other landowners to do the same, so they can turn the tide of deforestation.

Why can’t reforesting be profitable? 30% of the Amazon rain forest consists of edible or medicinal plants. People have lived with the jungle for a long time and made their livelihood from it. Start by planting a fruit trees between existing flora. Most trees don’t need direct sunlight like we think, the soil network is just as important. Keep building soil around the trees you want to favor and in 2 years the system will take care of itself.

@@BBCWorldService Went well! I live and teach in Melilla. It´s a Spanish city on the African continent and it only 12 square kilometers in size and the environmental challenges here are quite unique and it has problems, particularly with litter. We generated some interesting discussion from this video and it definetely helped raise awareness in their minds about the environment, how fragile it is and to understand there are ways to help turn the tide. Thanks for the great content.
