I see that they have the same superstitions that we have towards banyan trees in the Philippines, where bad spirits make banyan trees their home, that's why if it's already big we leave them alone but certainly not plant them. It's not a toxic reason because the cause isn't hatred, it's superstition. If you live in a society with superstitions, you will understand.

Since Beringin has it’s own meaning they think he is insane for planting a sacred tree. There are many Believes about trees and tbh mostly it’s abt bad luck. All i want to say is that he’s not insane, but according to those who believe that the Beringin is sacred and have ancestors soul lurking into it, thinks that he’s insane.

A fully grown banyan tree is considered as sacred by several ethnicities in Indonesia and it is considered as the dwelling of forest spirits. There is absolutly no importance in planting new trees for production of new oxigen at the moment:
      1. Most of the oxigen gets produced by phytoplancton in the oceans, not plants.
      2. Due to higher CO2 levels, the production of O2 gets easier for the plants. And due to higher temperatures and more CO2 plants can grow in more places of the earth.

This guy do get some award from the Indonesian government, and "his" forest now become one of several place for young people to learn forest conservation and other things like loving the earth. One of my colleagues visited this old man in 2018 with his organization, and this guy is truly amazing. I can only hope there will be another Sadiman all over the world.

Villagers were afraid he would bring bad spirits into the forest through the trees.
They failed to see that he was the heart and the spirit of the forest itself. I believe the plants and the wildlife love him better than the villagers do.
Somebody should do a fanart of this guy.

It's not about he planting the trees, but what he chose to plant is bayan/weringin trees, which in old javanese believes, spirit, soul of the death, djin living in the bayan trees.
Even so majority javanese is Muslims but they still believe and practice animisme.
