Hey man ! Just out of curiosity, I noticed that you had the bolt through the cam. When you were unlocking the cam phaser. Did you only have it hand tight at that point. Just curious because you can’t see the two dots with the bolt on.
Is there any reason to unlick this if you do not have any error code and or are not replacing? For example if you are removing the cam do you have to unlock this? thank You.
Exactly! Thats what I have been wondering. I think unless you are getting an error code or noise on start best to leave it alone. Perhaps someone with more experience may chime in on other issues that would warrant opening it.
I had this exact same thing happen with an 08 vibe, we unlocked it before install and didn't hold the cam in place, it re-locked itself while tightening and caused some big headaches.
I can’t seem to get the camgear unlocked. Don’t know what’s the trick. I removed the whole timing chain cover. Plugged the holes with paper towels and put tail thru it higher than 29psi to account for leakage as air does come out the front of the camgear.
You should here a light click noise when you apply air, then you will need to rotate, have someone hold the air on it and then hold the inner gear and rotate the outer.
thanks for pointers. Once it get locked it’s very hard to unlock it and I will try your method again but it sure is not easy and Toyota does not give good instructions. The camshaft knock pin has to be on the camgear and bolt hand tight and the camgear flush with the camshaft. This definitely a design defect not sure if Toyota has parted this out or not.
@@frontyardmechanicdiyall4268 I wish you did the whole chain and how you did it as my wife’s 2016 has the rattle on cold starts and Iam sure it’s coming. And I’ll be doing it 🤔
No, every manufacturer has a different procedure of how to remove and install this cam gears or cam phasers. It's always good to have the service information at hand when doing this type of jobs.

What tool was used to remove the service hole plug in front of the cam gear? Thanks
It only applies to the intake phaser? Or both intake n exhaust phaser ?

After u install new phaser, should set pin lock back ?or let it free?which side to align with if both intake and exhaust cam got vvti ?
Download the install instructions
Once the camshaft clicks where do you hold it to turn it counter clockwise to unlock it
How do you accidentally locked ?
It's easier than you think, I had one lock while torqueing it and didn't realize it
@@lacygamsky6251 so basically they have to be torqued unlocked?
Excellent tip 👊🏻👍🏻
Appreciate the positive comment, just trying to help and share the knowledge. 👍

Cool
This is not easy. Are all of them supposed to be unlocked for every make and model vehicle?

Yes they all should be unlocked
