Elvis Presley - A Fool Such As I (Live with Hank Garland)

  • RECONSTRUCTION using the audio from Elvis' final live performance for what would be 9yrs. (Now and Then There's) A Fool Such As I was a hit for Elvis while he was in the Army. In 1961, he did two benefit concerts, one in Memphis and one in Hawaii for the new Pearl Harbor Memorial. It may be his finest concert because it is a combination of the early Elvis sound of the 50's plus he performed his new singles which were more mature. He had a hotshot band that in addition to Scotty Moore on guitar also featured the legendary Hank Garland who after 1961 was unable to play on anymore of Elvis' records due to an auto accident.
The video you see here is taken from the film ELVIS starring Kurt Russell and is pretty close to probably how it would have been to see The King during this time period. In the film, the soundtrack was performed by Ronnie McDowell. Here, averyshakyproduction did what he calls a "reconstruction". I used the work he did but made it black and white and during the solo instead of going to just stock footage, I used footage of the REAL Hank Garland playing guitar. I slowed "Sugarfoot Rag" down to somewhat simulate the timing. I wish we had actual footage of Elvis and Hank doing this song, but this is as close as we're going to get.
    HOPE YOU ENJOY!!!
Audio from the box set "ELVIS ARON PRESLEY"

Just about all of Elvis's RCA hit songs credit Scotty Moore as the guitarist, when in fact it was old Hank. Without those great licks, Elvis would have been just another rock 'n roller.

Think of all the great Elvis performances that weren't documented on film or even recorded properly. This is one of those that should have been a landmark moment..Elvis had never sounded better his voice was incredible and the musicians around him were the best.

Hank Garland and Scotty Moore were way ahead of their Time. Scotty started with Elvis and showed the World what hard Music is. After that, it was Hank who, together with Elvis, managed to increase this even further. After these two, no one could shock the World anymore

You taught me how to milk a cow?!? Laughter...and then Hank Garland. Hank, sugarfoot forever through all time, space, and downright soul-tearing grooves. You too, King.
We carry it forward that rock ' roll and, more importantly, music in general. Lest we forget: all of it has been a part of the grand symphony called us.

I do know that one concert that Dad was on stage with Elvis was in Tupelo and I believe the other was in Hawaii after the filming of Blue Hawaii. I don't know about this one or where it was supposed to be from, but I know Dad was on the original studio recording from 1958.
I didn't much care for the "fake" insert of Dad, which made it look like, since he wasn't on stage they had to make sure everyone knew he was playing on this...I mean, Dad didn't always back up Elvis. He did a lot of recordings but then Scotty Moore was on stage more with Elvis. Dad was quite a busy man who was not only a studio guitarist but also leader on numerous sessions with many artists.
My Dad was more concerned with his career in music, recording, and developing his jazz talents then being "famous" and "on stage". In 1961 his main focus was Jazz, prior to his accident that year...

I listened to "Little Sister" today, and after researching (since I am a musician "nerd"), realized Hank Garland played on it. It is a shame what happened to your father. Especially since many of Elvis' early 60s recordings were so energetic and unique. What a guitar player! Light years ahead of time itself.....

I mean, Curt even made his movie debut in an Elvis flick (It Happened At The World's Fair), and his real dad played Elvis' dad in the Elvis bio! Great stuff. The Hank Garland bio/movie,'Crazy', from a few years ago, was pretty dang cool, too. We can never have too much Elvis, long live the King!!!

When I was about 9 I heard this song and your dads guitar was a sound and style that totally inspired me. I litterly never got over it .To this day I still get inspired when I listen to his totally underatted and killer licks , especially this track . He nails it from the first bar to the last .And his guitar sound is sublime. BTW anybody actually know what guitar it is, cause I’d love to know ... piercing sound ...love it . Thanks Debbi ,Regards Philip .

@oddjobjujitsu Bill Black didnt play on "A Fool Such As I". He had quit the band. It was the first session using mostly Nashville A team. That is why Hank Garland moved up to lead gtr position, Scotty to rhythm guitar. For this live version, it's the same lineup in Hawaii used in Nashville.

This is a lovely song that my late father loved.Of course the 1959 single sound so much better as you would expect because of the poorer quality of this live recording and all the screaming that was to be expected. It is a shame there was no actual footage of the show.I am surprised always that Col Parker did not arrange to have some of the Elvis shows recorded. Not enough money in it for him I suppose.I bet he would have done if he was around these days with dvd etc for milking the fanss.

      1. "Elvis Aron Presley" (RCA Records box set 1980), DISC 2: "An Early Benefit Concert" released on CD circa 1998
      2. "Rock Around The Bloch" a deluxe hardback book with 288 pages and 100 unpublished photographs. By David English and Pål Granlund published by Follow That Dream/RCA Records. The set includes a CD with a newly-remastered recording of Elvis' performance at the Bloch Arena, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on March 25, 1961 and a newly-discovered recording of the complete press conference and awards ceremony held on March 25, 1961.
      3. "SUCH A NIGHT IN PEARL HARBOR" (Memphis Recording Service) Deluxe CD + 100 pg book. Remastered last 1961 concert, before returning to the stage 7 years later + bonus material.

This is the real audio from Elvis' 1961 concert in Hawaii for the USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL with video of Kurt Russell as Elvis in the 1979 film. In the film he was seen doing a concert after returning from the Army and before the Hollywood scenes...so it would be circa 1961 in the film. Elvis only played two concerts in that time period. Director John Carpenter did a pretty good job overall especially when you realize how many of the known facts about Elvis were not well known yet. His approach was not to nail everything exact but to give an overall picture of Elvis' life. The scene that was shot with him lip syncing to Ronnie McDowell's impression of Elvis' "A Fool Such As I". It sure is better to see Kurt as Elvis but having Elvis' real music used as this video is doing. This scene is obviously not Hawaii or Memphis for that matter, BUT it looks a lot like Vancouver in 1957. I'm just going out on a limb here and going to guess that since Elvis wore his old gold lame' jacket and black pants at the Hawaii concert, he decided to sort of merge two events for the film. The famous news reel footage of Elvis in Canada in 1957 wearing that outfit with the women screaming and him dancing on stage that is used constantly whenever there is a documentary etc is so iconic, it looks like John Carpenter sort of recreated that but merged that image with events in 1961.
I don't believe the maker of the video is trying to fool anyone. They are just trying to give us a visual to go with this great audio of 1961.

      @richsumbitch  7 лет назад

You have to cuss John Carpenter the director and Dick Clark who didn't try to pay attention to detail. This is footage fr.om the movie "Elvis" starring Kurt Russell until the solo and then there is footage of the real Hank Garland. In retrospect, we probably should have gone to still photos of the REAL show in Hawaii in 1961 during the solo. Nobody is really reading the description. In the film...the music is Ronnie McDowell. We are AT LEAST hearing the REAL Elvis even if we're not seeing him.
