June Anderson sings the aria "Martern aller Arten" from Mozart's opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail (L'enlèvement au sérail/The Abduction from the Seraglio) Gerard Schwarz conducts - New York, 7 July 1993, "Mostly Mozart Festival".
That was amazing! In my opinion, there's nothing quite as emotionally potent as a soprano belting out an aria with every fiber of her soul. Thank you, June Anderson, for being such a wonderful singer!!
phanerothyme1 and this is one of Mozart’s belters.
honestly the best performance of this aria I've heard. Each note is so natural and unforced. But unfortunately she did not sing this role. I would buy it immediately!
Ach Ich Liebte would destroy her honestly. That’s probably the reason she stayed away from the role.
@@jjh2456 That is unlikely. Frankly the heavier bel canto roles were more what her bookings were. And Anderson had a penchant for rebellion wanting often to sing roles that were sort of a waste of time ( Trovatore which was dull in her voice) instead of the lyric coloratura roles that were expected. It’s very likely that Anderson had sung this role at New York City opera or elsewhere in B houses earlier in her career and just discarded it. Konstanze is a lot of work.
@@orion8835 you can look up her history. She has never sung the role of Kostanze. She has sung the Queen of the Night, the only Mozart role she sang.
Think Edita owns this
@@jjh2456she sang Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni at the New York City Opera. It's on RUclips
OMG! i wish mozart was alive to hear this!
magnifique!!! Quelle voix splendide.
She's in the same rank with M. Price, Callas & Edda Moser (my all time favorite)
Amazing. I admire her ability to remain calm during that demanding aria. She s given one of the best performances of this score.
sweeping effortless high registers!!! She was born to sing coloratura! You can't hear a single breath in there, NOW THAT'S technique!
Fabulous! What a wonderful performance. What was Mozart thinking? lol. This piece is like a concerto for voice and orchestra. Brava June Anderson!
Beautiful, controlled voice with a range I'm jealous of. Amazing song.
She is perfection!
Fantastic singing bravo June
I think you people are confusing scooping with a healthy legato. Yes she scooped 2 or 3 times but she definitely wasn't Gruberova-ing the whole piece.
Exactly. People can't understand that when you slide upwards instead of jumping to the note, it's considered a superior technique because it shows that you are not stopping your breath in that legato. People need to stop with their absurd Maria callas worship and know that callas can't do everything. She certainly cannot remotely sing Mozart. Her rendition was sharp and shrieky. Mozart is all about making a good sound for that heavenly feel. Callas on the other hand is a dramatic singer. She can't sing Mozart with that dull ugly voice. Doesn't matter how good her Bel Canto legatos are (she also can't do staccato) Period.
Luceafarul Ha what a total joke. 'Maria Callas cannot do staccatos'. commentators these days. advice: do your research
LaBartoliLover "Gruberova-ing all over the place"?
Hahaha......☺
@@onigbajamo not an argument
@@onigbajamo smarter than you apparently. And that’s not even saying something.
Una verdadera tortura cantar esta endiablada aria. Bravo!
It's a shame Mostly Mozart festival doesn't feature principal singers from the Met any longer...usually lesser known ones.
This is how perfection sounds!!!
One of my fave coloraturas of all time.
Eugene Ormandy's brother Martin right behind Anderson at 2:40.
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
7:35 magnifique trille !!!!!
Not really
Breathtaking!
Quite good, brava June. Yes the hair had better be an attempt at a period look - I've never seen her wear it this way on any other occasion - looks like Madeleine Kahn in Young Frankenstein!
Superb!
Without exception she is the best!!!!!
its when they they start at a lower note then slide up to the actual note
Merveilleux !
whatever456: she still performs around europe, recitals mostly. althoug she is doing norma and lucrezia borgia this year as well.
I always loved June and saw her in many of her great bel canto roles. This is great singing. But I'm not sure that she and Mozart were a stylistic match. I can only recall seeing her as Donna Elvira in a Mozart opera. No one can say she isn't one of the greats!
She did the Queen of the Night in "Die Zauberflote" and Fiorgilinni in "Cosi Fan Tutti'
Pity she never sang this opera.

Magnifique!!!!!!!
Astounding
Extraordinario!!!!!!
Excellent. Great Mozart style. I don't find the tempo slow. It's perfect.
rayterrell, i'm interested where this lyric-spinto coloratura fach is classified. to my knowledge there are only two classified coloratura fachs, lyrischer koloratursopran and dramatischer koloratursopran. the dramatic coloratura soprano is probably closest to the vocal quality you're describing as those voices are much richer in quality than a lyric coloratura.
Very good interpretation!!!
This song, and I believe she sang several others as well. I think she sang the Queen of the Night's 2nd Aria but I'm not sure.
perfection
00:28 and 00:29 flute fastens tempo. 00:38 violonsel detuned note.07:48 syncronization fault. The rest is amazing.
I love this lady. I am so impressed with her singing and her excellent STYLE and ability to sing ACCURATELY!
She is excellent.....Joan Sutherland is still the standard of near perfection...but this lady is close.
Very well done!
June does a fine job here, considering the complexities of this aria. Her timbre seems compatible with the character of the role, even if her occasional scooping attack detracts. Sutherland's recorded version on London is stunning, and my favorite version. Dame Joan never did perform this role on stage. She withdrew from a scheduled performance at the Met in her mid-fifties, apparently concerned that the high tessitura might cause strain.
Brava
Her voice sounded nothing less than divine in Amadeus. Especially for that little clip of this song.
So funny the cellist turning the page at 2:58 !!!
Agreed. Anderson has lovely agility, but it's not as dynamic as say Sutherland, Callas and even Gruberova. Some of the turns are very cumbersome.
A marvellous voice though. Terrific intonation.
You mean shrieking the tops for a louder sound? Mozart is about evenness of sound. The way that she sang is the golden standard.
7:26 Renée Fleming!
That's truly E F F O R T L E S S singing....However, I feel JA's voice/interpretation lacks Konstanze's defiance (perhaps because of the fact that she didn't play the role onstage)....'cause that is what she's doing: defying the Bassa.....But from a purely technical standpoint,
It's a total delight....
She is the modern Joan Sutherland. She resembles her physically too.
She is a great Mozart singer... and isn't her instrument big enough for Wagner...? Certainly for average size theatres...
Rightsideofthelaw7 she was mostly a bel canto specialist. She however did the Queen of the Night and Fiogilinni.
5*****:)
She sounds tight to me.. I really like Ms Anderson and have paid to hear her live and she is a very good singer.. but I am not sold on this.
Her voice seems so fragile that heavier roles........well, not the best fit I would say. And this role in the german fach is sometimes considered as a dramatic - coloratura part.
I'm not aware of a "lyric-spinto coloratura" fach either. Damrau is a dramatic. A really really good one.
squeaky5002 a dramatic coloratura soprano is a lirico sprinto soprano with agility.
My ass is a dramatico coloratura too you know. Damrau is a soubrette and I am not saying this just to be mean. Damrau's voice is extremely loud and very small. June Anderson, Cristina Deuketom and Sutherland are dramatic coloraturas.
Callas could not sing this aria because she was no colloratura soprano..She tryed but it sounded awfull. She did not like Mozart and was not capable of singing his music aldo she had this fantastic voice
Quite incorrect Maria Callas sounds superb singing this aria giving it a truly dramatic urgency which I am sure Mozart would have loved. June Anderson is also superb no need for a comparison.
@@Thevelezrubio listen to Christina Deutekom and to Edda Moser who song this so mutch better than callas. Callas was not a coloratur soprano. I love her voice nut than in verdi or Bellini
.
The tempo of this is too slow.. Anderson has a loverly voice but it is a slow voice.
I wouldn't say that but the problem here ALSO is that he's not following her tempo. She's constantly behind the orchestra ever so slightly. Her runs are more that of a normal tempo, and also we're so used to the Bartoli effect of the last 25 years or more where everyone sings runs super duper quick. It's unfair to singers who sing runs well but don't sing them that fast. But I agree it sounds too slow on these runs. And her vibrato slows down on top which makes it jarring.
nice.... tendency to be out of tune (sharp).
not even the slightest
