Beginning with realtime news, Sardesai speaks about the lack of reflecting and introspecting news. This, he says, has given rise to public amnesia, where it is almost difficult to remember news and
where, ‘today’s news is next hour’s history.’
The news industry, plagued by “hashtag journalism”, is faced with a crisis of credibility because instead of being what he calls the “cockroaches in the system”, the editors are playing in the hands of the proprietors.
On politics, he says that, “our politicians have become emperors,” and the need for strong leaders to emerge.
Rajdeep Sardesai, Padma Shri, is a senior journalist, TV news anchor and the former editor of Global Broadcast News. He has written the books 2014: The Election that Changed India and Democracy's XI: The Great Indian Cricket Story.

One can be a journalist with a simple blog or social media page. You need 250 crore to run a business not journalism.

There are several observations I have about this talk :
1. Why does Rajdeep not talk about the Godhra atrocity itself? Everybody wants to talk about the riots that followed. Because it is fine when Hindus are burnt. But a communal issue when Muslims are burnt.
2. I cannot understand why he washes his hands citing "I was not a journo then" in relation to the 1984 riots. But takes the case of the Godhra and Mumbai riots. Again because in one case it is the COngress and the othe the BJP.
3. As for the advertisemt vs subscription model - he has to accept that India is a very demanding market. Until 2012, there were several foreign players in the Private Banking industry. Nearly all foreign players have left. Why? Because Private Banking works on a fee-based model in the West, in India it doesn't. Indians are willing to pay for quality. Not charity. How is Tarek Fatah able to run a show - because he has the courage to challenge Muslim Mullahs, something that presstitutes are afraid of. I am already a subsciber to Business Standard, for example.
4. Indian media's standards are appalling. Like him or hate him, Arnab Goswami is one of the few exceptions. NY Times, Boston Globe, for example, have won Pulitzer prizes for brave reporting. The Boston Globe, for example, completely exposed sexual abuse of children by the Catholic Church in Boston. Has any Indian paper had the courage to follow up with Indian Christian institutions to check if they also abuse people?
5. Global exposure and India's closeness with Israel has validated in the minds of Indians that it is OK to feel proud about your country and your religion. Indians are therefore beginning to assert their Hindu faith. Because a few sickular journos think otherwise doesn't mean the masses of Indians are inferior.
In summary, Rajdeep comes across as a snob who finds fault with viewers, readers, politicians and journos because they do not subscribe to his values.

From this interview, I get the sense that poor Rajdeep is licking his wounds that he doesn't have a government in power that is in cahoots with him. Even the IB story on Samjhauta blasts where Rajdeep highlighted that things changed from the IB perspective, it looks like he is willing to accept the IB story from when the Congress government is in power and is questioning the IB now. The folks that watch this can usually see through this. Another example was his interview with Smriti Irani when she was the I&B minister. It is not that the Indian TV viewers trust the govt on everything, it is that they care less for the story that is being reported. e.g. demonetization may not have done any good for India, but the people of India didn't care about it enough. They are willing to give the benefit of doubt to the India govt that they at least tried to crack down on black money. When you try 10 things, you may not get it all correct the first time around and the indian folks are willing to forgive mistakes made especially when there is no sinister motive.
